We show that it is possible to define a timelike future-directed information current within relativistic first-order hydrodynamics. This constitutes the first step toward a covariantly stable and causal formulation of first-order fluctuating hydrodynamics based on thermodynamic principles. We provide several explicit examples of first-order theories with an information current, covering many physical phenomena, ranging from electric conduction to viscosity and elasticity. We use these information currents to compute the corresponding equal-time correlation functions, and we find that the physically relevant (equal-time) correlators do not depend on the choice of the hydrodynamic frame as long as the frame leads to causal and stable dynamics. We reformulate the Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation undergoing Bjorken flow in terms of a novel partial differential equation for the generating function of the moments of the distribution function. This is used to obtain an approximate analytic description of this system's far-from-equilibrium attractor via a series expansion at early times. This expansion possesses a finite radius of convergence and can be analytically continued to late times. We find that this procedure reproduces the known values of shear viscosity and other transport coefficients to high accuracy. We also provide a simple approximate analytic expression that describes the attractor in the entire domain of interest for studies of quark-gluon plasma dynamics.

We argue that the ratio between the shear viscosity and the shear relaxation time, $\eta/\tau_\pi$, should be defined as a thermodynamic quantity obtained from the equal-time symmetric correlator of the shear-stress tensor. In kinetic theory, we show that this ratio does not depend on the type of interaction. Similarly, an exact expression for this ratio is obtained for holographic gauge theories. In neutron stars, flavor-changing weak interactions determine the equilibrium fraction of protons over neutrons. In binary neutron-star mergers, violent changes in density modify this equilibrium value at timescales of milliseconds, comparable to those required for weak interactions to take place. As a result, the fraction of protons evolves out of phase with the density oscillations, giving rise to irreversible processes. The corresponding shift in pressure leads to dissipative work that can be modeled as an effective bulk-viscous correction. In this work, we derive the relevant equations of motion of Israel-Stewart hydrodynamics within this context. Using a toy model, we compute the second-order transport coefficients. Finally, we comment on the use of a realistic equation of state. We construct the general theory of first-order relativistic hydrodynamics for a fluid exhibiting a chiral anomaly, including all possible viscous terms allowed by symmetry. We present a new general formalism for introducing thermal fluctuations in relativistic hydrodynamics, which incorporates recent developments on the causality and stability of relativistic hydrodynamic theories. Our approach is based on the information current, which measures the net amount of information carried by perturbations around equilibrium in a relativistic many-body system. The resulting noise correlators are guaranteed to be observer-independent for thermodynamically stable models. A fundamental question in QCD is the existence of a phase transition at large doping of quarks over antiquarks. We present the first prediction of a QCD critical point (CP) from a Bayesian analysis constrained by first principle results at zero doping. We employ the gauge/gravity duality to map QCD onto a theory of dual black holes. Predictions for the CP location in different realizations of the model overlap at one sigma. Causality is necessary for retarded Green's functions to remain retarded in all inertial frames in relativity, which ensures that dissipation of fluctuations is a Lorentz invariant concept. For first-order BDNK theories with stochastic fluctuations, introduced via the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism, we show that imposing causality and stability leads to correlation functions of hydrodynamic fluctuations that only display the expected physical properties at small frequencies and wavenumber, i.e., within the expected regime of validity of the first-order approach. For second-order theories of Israel and Stewart type, constructed using the information current such that entropy production is always non-negative, a stochastic formulation is presented using the Martin-Siggia-Rose approach where imposing causality and stability leads to correlators with the desired properties. We also show how Green's functions can be determined from such an action. We identify a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, analogous to the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger symmetry, under which this Martin-Siggia-Rose action is invariant. This modified Kubo-Martin-Schwinger symmetry provides a new guide for the effective action formulation of hydrodynamic systems with dynamics not solely governed by conservation laws. Furthermore, this symmetry ensures that the principle of detailed balance is valid in a covariant manner. We employ the new symmetry to further clarify the connection between the Schwinger-Keldysh and Martin-Siggia-Rose approaches, establishing a precise link between these descriptions in second-order theories of relativistic hydrodynamics. We develop a general formalism for introducing stochastic fluctuations around thermodynamic equilibrium which takes into account, for the first time, recent developments on the causality and stability properties of relativistic hydrodynamic theories. The method is valid for any covariantly stable theory of relativistic viscous fluid dynamics derived from a covariant maximum entropy principle. We illustrate the formalism with some applications, showing how it could be used to consistently introduce fluctuations in a model of relativistic heat diffusion, and in conformally invariant Israel-Stewart theory in a general hydrodynamic frame. We show that linear superpositions of plane waves involving a single-valued, covariantly stable dispersion relation $\omega(k)$ always propagate outside the lightcone, unless $\omega(k) =a+b k$. This implies that there is no notion of causality for individual dispersion relations, since no mathematical condition on the function $\omega(k)$ (such as the front velocity or the asymptotic group velocity conditions) can serve as a sufficient condition for subluminal propagation in dispersive media. Instead, causality can only emerge from a careful cancellation that occurs when one superimposes all the excitation branches of a physical model. This is shown to happen automatically in local theories of matter that are covariantly stable. We compute the radius of convergence of the linearized relativistic hydrodynamic expansion around a nontrivially rotating strongly coupled N ¼ 4 super-Yang-Mills plasma. Our results show that the validity of hydrodynamics is sustained and can even get enhanced for conformal field theory (CFT) in a rotating state. Analytic equations for the hydrodynamic dispersion relations and transport coefficients of the rotating plasma as a function of their values in a plasma at rest are given.

A general organizing principle is proposed that can be used to derive the equations of motion describing the near-equilibrium dynamics of causal and thermodynamically stable relativistic systems. The latter are found to display some new type of universal behavior near equilibrium that allows them to be grouped into universality classes defined by their degrees of freedom, information content, and conservation laws. The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. This white paper highlights the role that heavy-ion collision experiments and hadronic transport simulations play in understanding strong interactions in dense nuclear matter, with an emphasis on how these efforts can be used together with microscopic approaches and neutron star studies to uncover the nuclear EOS.

This review aims at providing an extensive discussion of modern constraints relevant for dense and hot strongly interacting matter. It includes theoretical first-principle results from lattice and perturbative QCD, as well as chiral effective field theory results. From the experimental side, it includes heavy-ion collision and low-energy nuclear physics results, as well as observations from neutron stars and their mergers. The validity of different constraints, concerning specific conditions and ranges of applicability, is also provided.

We investigate the weak-interaction-driven bulk-viscous transport properties of $npe$ matter in the neutrino transparent regime. Previous works assumed that the induced bulk viscosity correction to pressure, near beta equilibrium, is linear in deviations from the equilibrium charge fraction. We show that this is not always true for (some) realistic equations of state at densities between one and three times saturation density. This nonlinear nature of the perturbation around equilibrium motivates a far-from-beta-equilibrium description of bulk-viscous transport in neutron star mergers, which can be precisely achieved using a new Israel-Stewart formulation with resummed bulk and relaxation time transport coefficients. The computation of these transport coefficients depends on out-of-beta-equilibrium pressure corrections, which can be computed for a given equation of state. We calculate these coefficients for equations of state that satisfy the latest constraints from multi-messenger observations from LIGO/VIRGO and NICER. We show that varying the nuclear symmetry energy $J$ and its slope $L$ can significantly affect the transport coefficients and the nonlinear behavior of the out-of-equilibrium pressure corrections. We derive the set of inequalities that is necessary and sufficient for nonlinear causality and linear stability of first-order relativistic hydrodynamics with either a $U(1)_V$ conserved current or a $U(1)_A$ current with a chiral anomaly or both. Our results apply to generic hydrodynamic frames in which no relations among the transport parameters are imposed. Furthermore, our analysis yields the first theory of viscous chiral hydrodynamics proven to be causal and stable. We find that causality demands the absence of vorticity-induced heat flux, forcing a departure from the thermodynamic frame in the chiral case. The inequalities for causality and stability define a hypervolume in the space of transport parameters, wherein each point corresponds to a consistent formulation. In this review, we provide an up-to-date account of quantitative holographic descriptions of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions, based on the class of gauge-gravity Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) models. Holography is employed to tentatively map the QCD phase diagram at finite temperature onto a dual theory of charged, asymptotically AdS black holes in 5D. With a quantitative focus on the hot QCD phase diagram, the EMD models reviewed are adjusted to describe lattice results for the finite-temperature QCD equation of state, with 2+1 flavors and physical quark masses, at zero chemical potential and vanishing electromagnetic fields. The predictive power of EMD models is tested by quantitatively comparing their predictions for the hot QCD equation of state at nonzero baryon density and the corresponding state-of-the-art lattice QCD results. The shear and bulk viscosities predicted by these EMD models are also compared to the corresponding profiles favored by the latest phenomenological multistage models describing different heavy-ion data. We report preliminary results from a Bayesian analysis which provide systematic evidence that lattice results at finite temperature and zero baryon density strongly constrains the free parameters of EMD models. Remarkably, the set of parameters constrained by lattice results at zero chemical potential produces EMD models in quantitative agreement with lattice QCD results also at finite baryon density. We also review results for equilibrium and transport properties from anisotropic EMD models, describing the QGP at finite temperatures and magnetic fields. Finally, we provide a critical assessment of the main limitations and drawbacks of the holographic models reviewed in the present work, and point out some perspectives we believe are of fundamental importance for future developments., Comment: Invited review, 73 pages, 14 figures

We determine necessary and sufficient conditions under which a large class of relativistic generalizations of Braginskii's magnetohydrodynamics, described using Israel-Stewart theory, are causal and strongly hyperbolic in the fully nonlinear regime in curved spacetime. Our new nonlinear analysis provides stricter constraints on the dynamical variables that cannot be obtained via a standard linear expansion around equilibrium. We investigate the far-from-equilibrium behavior of the Boltzmann equation for a gas of massless scalar field particles with quartic (tree level) self-interactions ($\lambda \phi^4$) in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetime. Using a new covariant generating function for the moments of the Boltzmann distribution function, we analytically determine a subset of the spectrum and the corresponding eigenfunctions of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator. We show how the covariant generating function can be also used to find the exact equations for the moments in the full nonlinear regime. Different than the case of a ultrarelativistic gas of hard spheres (where the total cross section is constant), for $\lambda \phi^4$ the fact that the cross section decreases with energy implies that moments of arbitrarily high order directly couple to low order moments. A bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model is used to compute, for the first time, the behavior of several transport coefficients of the hot and baryon-rich strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma at the critical point and also across the first-order phase transition line in the phase diagram. The observables under study are of the shear and bulk viscosities, baryon diffusion, thermal conductivity, the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$, as well as the heavy-quark drag force and Langevin diffusion coefficients. These calculations provide a phenomenologically promising estimate for these coefficients, given that our model quantitatively reproduces lattice QCD thermodynamics results, both at zero and finite baryon density, besides naturally incorporating the nearly-perfect fluidity of the quark-gluon plasma. We find that the diffusion of baryon charge, and also the shear and bulk viscosities, are suppressed with increasing baryon density, indicating that the medium becomes even closer to perfect fluidity at large densities. On the other hand, the jet quenching parameter and the heavy-quark momentum diffusion are enhanced with increasing density. The observables display a discontinuity gap when crossing the first-order phase transition line, while developing an infinite slope at the critical point. The transition temperatures associated with different transport coefficients differ in the crossover region but are found to converge at the critical point., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures

Hydrodynamics can be formulated in terms of a perturbative series in derivatives of the temperature, chemical potential, and flow velocity around an equilibrium state. Different formulations for this series have been proposed over the years, which consequently led to the development of various hydrodynamic theories. In this work, we discuss the relativistic generalizations of the perturbative expansions put forward by Chapman and Enskog, and Hilbert, using general matching conditions in kinetic theory. This allows us to describe, in a comprehensive way, how different out-of-equilibrium definitions for the hydrodynamic fields affect the development of the hydrodynamic perturbative series. We provide a perturbative method for systematically deriving the hydrodynamic formulation recently proposed by Bemfica, Disconzi, Noronha, and Kovtun (BDNK) from relativistic kinetic theory. The various transport coefficients that appear in BDNK (at first-order) are explicitly computed using a new formulation of the relaxation time approximation for the Boltzmann equation. Assuming Bjorken flow, we also determine the hydrodynamic attractors of BDNK theory and compare the overall hydrodynamic evolution obtained using this formulation with that generated by the Israel-Stewart equations of motion and also kinetic theory., Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures

We study the dynamical formation of scalar monopole and dipole hair in scalar Gauss-Bonnet theory and dynamical Chern-Simons theory. We prove that the spherically-symmetric mode of the dipole hair is completely determined by the product of the mass of the spacetime and the value of the monopole hair. We then show that the dynamics of the $\ell=1$ mode of the dipole hair is intimately tied to the appearance of the event horizon during axisymmetric collapse, which results in the radiation of certain modes that could have been divergent in the future of the collapse. We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of viscous fluids in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker cosmology using the most general causal and stable viscous energy-momentum tensor defined at first order in spacetime derivatives. In this new framework a pressureless viscous fluid having density $\rho$ can evolve to an asymptotic future solution in which the Hubble parameter approaches a constant while $\rho \rightarrow 0$, even in the absence of a cosmological constant (i.e., $\Lambda = 0$). Hydrodynamics can be formulated in terms of a perturbative series in derivatives of the temperature, chemical potential, and flow velocity around an equilibrium state. Different formulations for this series have been proposed over the years, which consequently led to the development of various hydrodynamic theories. In this work, we discuss the relativistic generalizations of the perturbative expansions put forward by Chapman and Enskog, and Hilbert, using general matching conditions in kinetic theory. This allows us to describe, in a comprehensive way, how different out-of-equilibrium definitions for the hydrodynamic fields affect the development of the hydrodynamic perturbative series. We provide a perturbative method for systematically deriving the hydrodynamic formulation recently proposed by Bemfica, Disconzi, Noronha, and Kovtun (BDNK) from relativistic kinetic theory. The various transport coefficients that appear in BDNK (at first-order) are explicitly computed using a new formulation of the relaxation time approximation for the Boltzmann equation. We study the dynamical formation of scalar monopole and dipole hair in scalar Gauss-Bonnet theory and dynamical Chern-Simons theory. We prove that the spherically-symmetric mode of the dipole hair is completely determined by the product of the mass of the spacetime and the value of the monopole hair. We then show that the dynamics of the ℓ = 1 mode of the dipole hair is intimately tied to the appearance of the event horizon during axisymmetric collapse, which results in the radiation of certain modes that could have been divergent in the future of the collapse. We extend our previous investigation of the effects of pre-hydrodynamic evolution on final-state observables in heavy-ion collisions to smaller systems. We use a state-of-the-art hybrid model for the numerical simulations with optimal parameters obtained from a previous Bayesian study. By studying p-Pb collisions, we find that the effects due to the assumption of a conformal evolution in the pre-hydrodynamical stage are even more important in small systems. We also show that this effect depends on the time duration of the pre-equilibrium stage, which is further enhanced in small systems. Finally, we show that the recent proposal of a free-streaming with subluminal velocity for the pre-equilibrium stage, thus effectively breaking conformal invariance, can alleviate the contamination of final state observables. Our study further reinforces the need for moving beyond conformal approaches in pre-equilibrium dynamics modeling, especially when extracting transport coefficients from hybrid models in the high-precision era of heavy-ion collisions., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

We combine, for the first time, event-by-event $\rm T_RENTo$ initial conditions with the relativistic viscous hydrodynamic model v-USPhydro and the Monte Carlo event generator JEWEL to make predictions for the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and jet azimuthal anisotropies $v_n\left\{2\right\}$ in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02 \, \rm TeV$ PbPb collisions for multiple centralities and values of the jet cone radius $R$. The $R$-dependence of $R_{AA}$ and $v_2\left\{2\right\}$ strongly depends on the presence of recoiling scattering centers. In nuclear matter in neutron stars the flavor content (e.g., proton fraction) is subject to weak interactions, establishing flavor ($\beta$-)equilibrium. During the merger of two neutron stars there can be deviations from this equilibrium. By incorporating Urca processes into general-relativistic hydrodynamics simulations, we study the resulting out-of-equilibrium dynamics during the collision. We provide the first direct evidence that microphysical transport effects at late times reach a hydrodynamic regime with a nonzero bulk viscosity, making neutron star collisions intrinsically viscous. Finally, we identify signatures of this process in the post-merger gravitational wave emission.
