Background: We investigated whether transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and sensory stimulation (SS) could promote upper limb recovery in participants with subacute stroke. Methods: Participants were randomized into four groups: rTMS/Sham SS, Sham rTMS/SS, rTMS/SS, and control group (Sham rTMS/Sham SS). Participants underwent ten sessions of sham or active rTMS over S1 (10 Hz, 1,500 pulses, 120% of resting motor threshold, 20 min), followed by sham or active SS. The SS involved active sensory training (exploring features of objects and graphesthesia, proprioception exercises), mirror therapy, and Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) in the region of the median nerve in the wrist (stimulation intensity as the minimum intensity at which the participants reported paresthesia; five electrical pulses of 1 ms duration each at 10 Hz were delivered every second over 45 min). Sham stimulations occurred as follows: Sham rTMS, coil was held while disconnected from the stimulator, and rTMS noise was presented with computer loudspeakers with recorded sound from a real stimulation. The Sham SS received therapy in the unaffected upper limb, did not use the mirror and received TENS stimulation for only 60 seconds. The primary outcome was the Body Structure/Function: Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Nottingham Sensory Assessment (NSA); the secondary outcome was the Activity/Participation domains, assessed with Box and Block Test, Motor Activity Log scale, Jebsen-Taylor Test, and Functional Independence Measure. Results: Forty participants with stroke ischemic (n = 38) and hemorrhagic (n = 2), men (n = 19) and women (n = 21), in the subacute stage (10.6 ± 6 weeks) had a mean age of 62.2 ± 9.6 years, were equally divided into four groups (10 participants in each group). This study analyses the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and macroeconomic impacts of the new NDCs. The total impact of the updated unconditional and conditional NDCs of these countries on global emission levels by 2030 is an additional reduction of about 3.8 and 3.9 GtCO2eq, respectively, compared to the previously submitted NDCs as of October 2020. However, this total reduction must be about three times greater to be consistent with keeping global temperature increase to well below 2 °C, and even seven times greater for 1.5 °C. Nine G20 economies have pledged stronger emission reduction targets for 2030 in their updated NDCs, leading to additional aggregated GHG emission reductions of about 3.3 GtCO2eq, compared to those in the previous NDCs. The socio-economic impacts of the updated NDCs are limited in major economies and largely depend on the emission reduction effort included in the NDCs. Questions: Pollen traits (e.g., size, wall thickness, number of apertures) have been suggested to be relevant in terms of pollination mechanisms and the ability of the male gametophyte to withstand desiccation. We examined the spatiotemporal distribution of pollen traits related to dispersal (ornamentation and dispersal unit) and desiccation tolerance (wall thickness, presence of furrows and pores and pollen size). Specifically, we address two questions: how are the pollen traits distributed in relation to different levels of aridity? And, how did the pollen trait composition change with changing past environmental conditions?. Location: Laurel forests of La Gomera and Tenerife (Canary Islands). Methods: We used pollen rain from 19 forest plots on an elevational gradient of 1050 m and all laurel forest types (cold, dry, humid and ridge crest) to quantify pollen trait composition using community-weighted means. In addition, we used fossil pollen to examine the composition of pollen traits over 9600 years in response to known intervals of regional past climate change. Results: Our results demonstrated increased prevalence of desiccation tolerance-related pollen traits over drier areas of the laurel forest distribution. We also found increased prevalence of rich pollen grain ornamentation in the core of the laurel forest distribution. Holocene pollen functional diversity increased during a trend towards drier conditions as did the proportion of pollen grains with apertures and thicker walls to indicate desiccation tolerance. Conclusions: Our study provides the first step towards understanding the role of pollen traits when quantifying the dynamics of different plant communities.

Parties to the Paris Agreement communicate Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which are pledges containing their contribution to the challenge of reducing global emissions and keeping end-of-century warming below 1.5 °C. There is no yardstick to measure the adequacy of NDCs or the actual progress towards them. Therefore, to measure progress on the implementation of countries’ policies and targets is essential to make the Paris Agreement work. Most countries have updated their NDCs and adopted additional policies since the Paris Agreement came into force. The latest submitted targets are an improvement in comparison to the original ones but remain globally insufficient to curb global emissions (den Elzen et al., 2022a). Policies have also improved since 2015 but projections under currently adopted policies suggest emissions are still expected to increase up to 2030 (Nascimento et al., 2022). Despite these improvements, a global ambition gap exists between countries’ target and policies and the collective mitigation goals of the Paris Agreement. It is, therefore, crucial to continually track countries’ progress towards their NDCs and inform policymakers with up-to-date knowledge to ensure effective implementation of the ratcheting mechanism under the Paris Agreement. This report is prepared by NewClimate Institute, PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and IIASA and presents a preliminary assessment of progress by 25 countries toward the achievement of the mitigation components of their 2030 targets. The analysis was conducted for 17 initiatives, selected from an original list of over 300 with a series of testing criteria, across eight sectors and ten major emitting economies. These initiatives include cities, regions, businesses, and other subnational and non-state actors, cooperating with each other and sometimes working in partnership with national governments or other international organizations. Our analysis shows that the combined achievement of initiatives’ reduction goals could reduce global emissions in 2030 by 18–21 GtCO2e/year in addition to current national policies (total of 60–63 GtCO2e/year), down to 39–44 GtCO2e/year. If delivered fully, reductions from these 17 initiatives would help move the global emissions trajectory within the range of a 2°C-consistent emission pathway by 2030, although a significant gap would remain to reduce emissions to a 1.5°C-consistent pathway.

Reducing global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to zero is a crucial step to minimise the worst effects of climate change. The growing political consensus on the dangers of climate change and the increasing number of climate policies implemented is a sign for cautious optimism. Countries increasingly recognise the need to achieve net zero emissions globally by mid-century but still need to implement near-term policy actions and measures to ensure this long-term ambition trigger the transformation necessary to meet the collective goals of the Paris Agreement. This report documents near-term climate policies and measures adopted in the 30 major economies and assesses resulting future GHG emissions trajectories up to 2030. AIM: Long‐term ecological data provide a stepped frame of island ecosystem transformation after successive waves of human colonization, essential to determine conservation and management baselines. However, the timing and ecological impact of initial human settlement on many islands is still poorly known. Here, we report analyses from a 4800‐year sedimentary sequence from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands), with the goal of disentangling forest responses to natural fire from early human pressure on the island. LOCATION: La Calderilla, a volcanic maar caldera at 1,770 m a.s.l. on Gran Canaria. TAXON: Plants and fungi. METHODS: A core from the caldera infill was analysed for sediment properties, pollen, micro‐ and macrocharcoal, with radiocarbon and biochronology dating. Fossil data were statistically zoned and interpreted with the help of cross‐correlation and ordination analyses. Surface samples and a pollen–vegetation training set were used as modern analogues for vegetation reconstruction. RESULTS: Before human settlement (4,800–2,000 cal. yr bp), pine (Pinus canariensis) pollen dominated. Extensive dry pine forests characterized the highlands, although with temporary declining phases, followed by prompt (sub‐centennial scale) recovery. Towards 2,280 cal. yr bp there was a shift to open vegetation, marked by an increase in coprophilous spores. Coincidental with independent evidence of human settlement in the pine belt (2,000–470 cal. yr bp) there was a decline of pine and a peak in charcoal. Following historic settlement (470–0 cal. yr bp), pollen producers from anthropogenic habitats, secondary vegetation and coprophilous fungi increased in abundance, reflecting higher pressure of animal husbandry and farming. Modern moss polsters reflect extensive reforestation since 1950 ce (Common Era). MAIN CONCLUSIONS: From 4,800 cal. yr bp, the pristine vegetation covering the Gran Canaria highlands was a mosaic of dry pine forests and open vegetation. The pine forests sustained

© 2020 The Authors Local energy initiatives (LEIs) are communities of households who self-organize to meet their energy demand with locally produced green energy. They facilitate citizen participation by developing context-specific solutions, which calls for leadership and complex social dynamics. We present an agent-based simulation model to explore the formation of community energy initiatives from the bottom-up, accounting for social networks and evolution of opinions facilitating or hindering LEIs. Our novel model relies on well-established social theories and uses empirical data on community energy systems in the Netherlands and individual citizens’ preferences. Specifically, our computational model captures behavioural drivers and social value orientations, and relates individuals behavioural traits to aggregated stylized facts about energy initiatives at the community level. The results indicate that when communities lack participants with cooperative orientation, altruistic citizens with prosocial social value orientations become essential for the creation of LEIs, revealing different pathways to achieve public good benefits. Our analysis systematically demonstrate that leaders can be a bottleneck in the LEIs’ formation and that an increase in initiators is conducive to the creation of LEIs. Therefore, policies aiming at increasing the number of community initiatives should target small groups and individuals with the leadership potential, who could lead projects, and explore synergies with wider community benefits.

The traumatic accidents which result in fractures and even in impairment of a bone segment have a high prevalence in routine veterinary surgery. Many times these fractures are complex and difficulty healing or need bone grafts to preserve and restore the length of the affected limb. Thus, the recovery time of these animals is usually delicate and long, with complications risks, such as delayed union and non-union of the fractured bone segments or absence of graft incorporation. In this sense, the stem cells (SC) have shown to be a strong ally of the orthopedic doctors due to their capacity to provide osteoprogenitor cells, to increase the osteoinductive effect minimize the healing time and provide a greater efficiency to the repairing process. Due to that, before the expectation of their assignments, this review aims to describe the stem cells characteristics, their current applications in the fractures healing and, especially, their contribution to the bone grafts consolidation., Los accidentes traumáticos que resultan en fracturas y hasta en el comprometimiento de un segmento óseo tienen alta prevalencia en la rutina quirúrgica veterinaria. Muchas veces esas fracturas son complejas y presentan dificultades de cicatrización o necesitan de injertos óseos para preservar y restaurar el largo del miembro acometido. De esa forma, el tiempo de recuperación de esos animales suele ser delicado y prolongado con riegos de complicaciones, como unión retardada y no unión de los segmentos óseos fracturados o ausencia de incorporación de los injertos. En este sentido, las células-madre (CT) vienen demostrando ser una fuerte aliada de los ortopedistas debido a su capacidad en proveer células osteoprogenitoras, de incrementar el efecto osteoinductor, minimizar el tiempo de cicatrización y proporcionar mayor eficiencia al proceso reparador. Frente a la expectativa de sus atribuciones, la presente revisión tiene por objetivo describir las características de las células-madre, sus aplicaciones actuales en la cicatrización de fracturas y, especialmente, su contribución en la consolidación de injertos óseos.
