We study generalised P and CP transformations in the three-Higgs-doublet model (3HDM) with Higgs and gauge fields only. We find that there are two equivalence classes, with respect to flavour transformations, of generalised P transformations and there is only one class of CP transformations. We discuss the conditions the potential has to satisfy in order to be invariant under these transformations. We apply the method of bilinears which we briefly review. We discuss the relation to the conventional basis, where the potential is written in terms of scalar products of the doublet fields. In particular we reproduce the known result that a potential is invariant under CP transformations if and only if there is a conventional basis where all parameters are real. Eventually we study standard P and CP transformations in the $n$-Higgs-doublet model (nHDM). We show that for the bilinears of the nHDM the standard CP transformation corresponds to a diagonal linear transformation with only $\pm 1$ as diagonal elements. We continue our investigation of the phenomenological consequences of the MCPM for the LHC experiments. As in any two-Higgs-doublet model we have in the MCPM three neutral Higgs bosons and one charged Higgs-boson pair $H^\pm$. Here we discuss the two-photon production in proton-proton collisions. We find that in the MCPM a resonance-type structure in the $\gamma\gamma$ invariant mass distribution is predicted around twice the $H^\pm$ mass $m_{H^\pm}$ with a width $2\; \Gamma_H$ where $\Gamma_H$ is the $H^\pm$ width. If we set $m_{H^\pm} = 375$ GeV, the above resonance structure appears at 750 GeV with a width of about 45 GeV. We point out various predictions of the MCPM which follow in such a scenario and which can be checked at the LHC., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the classification of symmetries and the corresponding symmetry groups in the two-Higgs-doublet model (THDM). We give an easily useable method how to determine the symmetry class and corresponding symmetry group of a given THDM Higgs potential. One of the symmetry classes corresponds to a Higgs potential with several simultaneous generalised CP symmetries. Extending the CP symmetry of this class to the Yukawa sector in a straightforward way, the so-called maximally-CP-symmetric model (MCPM) is obtained. We study the evolution of the quartic Higgs-potential parameters under a change of renormalisation point. Finally we compute the so called oblique parameters S, T, and U, in the MCPM and we identify large regions of viable parameter space with respect to electroweak precision measurements. We present the corresponding allowed regions for the masses of the physical Higgs bosons. Reasonable ranges for these masses, up to several hundred GeV, are obtained which should make the (extra) Higgs bosons detectable in LHC experiments., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures

We discuss the geometric phases and flux densities for the metastable states of hydrogen with principal quantum number n=2 being subjected to adiabatically varying external electric and magnetic fields. Convenient representations of the flux densities as complex integrals are derived. Both, parity conserving (PC) and parity violating (PV) flux densities and phases are identified. General expressions for the flux densities following from rotational invariance are derived. Specific cases of external fields are discussed. In a pure magnetic field the phases are given by the geometry of the path in magnetic field space. But for electric fields in presence of a constant magnetic field and for electric plus magnetic fields the geometric phases carry information on the atomic parameters, in particular, on the PV atomic interaction. We show that for our metastable states also the decay rates can be influenced by the geometric phases and we give a concrete example for this effect. Finally we emphasise that the general relations derived here for geometric phases and flux densities are also valid for other atomic systems having stable or metastable states, for instance, for He with n=2. Thus, a measurement of geometric phases may give important experimental information on the mass matrix and the electric and magnetic dipole matrices for such systems. This could be used as a check of corresponding theoretical calculations of wave functions and matrix elements., Comment: 29 pages, 12 figures

We study the dipole picture of high-energy virtual-photon-proton scattering. It is shown that different choices for the energy variable in the dipole cross section used in the literature are not related to each other by simple arguments equating the typical dipole size and the inverse photon virtuality, contrary to what is often stated. We argue that the good quality of fits to structure functions that use Bjorken- x as the energy variable — which is strictly speaking not justified in the dipole picture — can instead be understood as a consequence of the sign of scaling violations that occur for increasing Q 2 at fixed small x. We show that the dipole formula for massless quarks has the structure of a convolution. From this we obtain derivative relations between the structure function F 2 at large and small Q 2 and the dipole-proton cross section at small and large dipole size r, respectively.

The second and third fermion families have a very symmetric coupling to the Higgs fields. But through the electroweak symmetry breaking a large mass hierarchy is generated between these fermion families. Thus, the fermion mass spectrum of the model presents a rough approximation to what is observed in Nature. In the MCPM the couplings of the Higgs bosons to the fermions are completely fixed. This allows us to present clear predictions for the production at the LHC and for the decays of the physical Higgs bosons. As salient feature we find rather large cross sections for Higgs-boson production via Drell-Yan type processes. The two-Higgs-doublet model can be constrained by imposing Higgs-family symmetries and/or generalized CP symmetries. It is known that there are only six independent classes of such symmetry-constrained models. We study the CP properties of all cases in the bilinear formalism. The processes proton + antiproton -> gamma + heavy-flavour jet(s) + X and proton + proton -> gamma + heavy-flavour jet(s) + X are studied in the framework of a special two-Higgs-doublet model, the MCPM. As distinguishing feature of this model we find that radiative Higgs-boson production and decay lead to heavy flavour c jets but no b jets in the above processes. Thus, the prediction is that b jets should be given by the normal QCD processes whereas for c jets an excess over the QCD expectation should occur. The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

We discuss the propagation of hydrogen atoms in static electric and magnetic fields in a longitudinal atomic beam spin echo (lABSE) apparatus. There the atoms acquire geometric (Berry) phases that exhibit a new manifestation of parity-(P-)violation in atomic physics. We provide analytical as well as numerical calculations of the behaviour of the metastable 2S states of hydrogen. The conditions for electromagnetic field configurations that allow for adiabatic evolution of the relevant atomic states are investigated. Our results provide the theoretical basis for the discussion of possible measurements of P-violating geometric phases in lABSE experiments., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures

We present the mini-proceedings of the workshop on ``Photoproduction at collider energies: from RHIC and HERA to the LHC'' held at the European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT*, Trento) from January 15 to 19, 2007. The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of high-energy photon-induced processes at different colliders (HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) small-$x$ QCD in photoproduction studies with protons and in electromagnetic (aka. ultraperipheral) nucleus-nucleus collisions, (ii) hard diffraction physics at hadron colliders, and (iii) photon-photon collisions at very high energies: electroweak and beyond the Standard Model processes. These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

We study a two-Higgs-doublet model with four generalised CP symmetries in the scalar sector. Electroweak symmetry breaking leads automatically to spontaneous breaking of two of them. We require that these four CP symmetries can be extended from the scalar sector to the full Lagrangian and call this requirement the principle of maximal CP invariance. The Yukawa interactions of the fermions are severely restricted by this requirement. In particular, a single fermion family cannot be coupled to the Higgs fields. For two fermion families, however, this is possible. Enforcing the absence of flavour-changing neutral currents, we find degenerate masses in both families or one family massless and one massive. In the latter case the Lagrangian is highly symmetric, with the mass hierarchy being generated by electroweak symmetry breaking. Adding a third family uncoupled to the Higgs fields and thus keeping it massless we get a model which gives a rough approximation of some features of the fermions observed in Nature. We discuss the CP properties of the potential in the general Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (THDM). This is done in a concise way using real gauge invariant functions built from the scalar products of the doublet fields. The space of these invariant functions, parametrising the gauge orbits of the Higgs fields, is isomorphic to the forward light cone and its interior. CP transformations are shown to correspond to reflections in the space of the gauge invariant functions. We consider CP transformations where no mixing of the Higgs doublets is taken into account as well as the general case where the Higgs basis is not fixed. We present basis independent conditions for explicit CP violation which may be checked easily for any THDM potential. The global minimum of a Higgs potential can be found from the set of all its stationary points defined by a multivariate polynomial system of equations. We introduce here the algebraic Groebner basis approach to solve this system of equations. We apply the method to the NMSSM with CP conserving as well as CP violating parameters. The results reveal an interesting stationary-point structure of the potential. We consider the gauge-boson sector of a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian with ten dimension-six operators added to the Lagrangian of the Standard Model. These operators induce anomalous three- and four-gauge-boson couplings and an anomalous gamma gamma H coupling. In the framework of this effective Lagrangian we calculate the helicity amplitudes and differential and total cross sections for the process gamma gamma --> WW at a photon collider. We give relations between different parts of the amplitudes that show which linear combinations of anomalous couplings are measurable in this reaction. The transformation properties of the differential cross section under CP are discussed. We find that three linear combinations of CP conserving and of CP violating couplings can be measured independently of the photon polarisation in gamma gamma --> WW., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, references added; to appear in EPJC

We present a study of anomalous electroweak gauge-boson couplings which can be measured in e+e- and gamma gamma collisions at a future linear collider like ILC. We consider the gauge-boson sector of a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian with ten dimension-six operators added to the Lagrangian of the Standard Model. These operators induce anomalous three- and four-gauge-boson couplings and an anomalous gamma gamma H coupling. We calculate the reachable sensitivity for the measurement of the anomalous couplings in gamma gamma --> WW. We compare these results with the reachable precision in the reaction e+e- --> WW on the one hand and with the bounds that one can get from high-precision observables in Z decays on the other hand. We show that one needs both the e+e- and the gamma gamma modes at an ILC to constrain the largest possible number of anomalous couplings and that the Giga-Z mode offers the best sensitivity for certain anomalous couplings., Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure, 7 tables, comments, references and a table added; to appear in EPJC

In contrast to theoretical expectations, experimental results at sqrt(s)=200 GeV for the reaction gamma p --> pi0 X show no evidence for odderon exchange. The upper limit on the cross section is an order of magnitude smaller than the theoretical estimate. It is argued that chiral symmetry leads to a large suppression, taking the thoeretical estimates well below the data. Two additional arguments are presented which may decrease the theoretical estimate further. The calculations are more sensitive to the assumptions made in evaluating the hadronic scattering amplitude than in the processes considered previously and lattice gauge calculations indicate that the odderon intercept may be appreciably lower than usually assumed. The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. We present a study of anomalous electroweak gauge-boson couplings which can be measured in e+e- and gamma gamma collisions at a future linear collider like ILC. We consider the gauge-boson sector of a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian with ten dimension-six operators added to the Lagrangian of the Standard Model. These operators induce anomalous three- and four-gauge-boson couplings and an anomalous gamma gamma H coupling. We calculate the reachable sensitivity for the measurement of the anomalous couplings in gamma gamma --> WW. We compare these results with the reachable precision in the reaction e+e- --> WW on the one hand and with the bounds that one can get from high-precision observables in Z decays on the other hand. We show that one needs both the e+e- and the gamma gamma modes at an ILC to constrain the largest possible number of anomalous couplings and that the Giga-Z mode offers the best sensitivity for certain anomalous couplings., Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure, 7 tables, comments, references and a table added; to appear in EPJC

We consider the gauge-boson sector of a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian with ten dimension-six operators added to the Lagrangian of the Standard Model. In the framework of this effective Lagrangian we calculate the helicity amplitudes and differential and total cross sections for the process gamma gamma --> WW at a photon collider. We give relations between different parts of the amplitudes that show which linear combinations of anomalous couplings are measurable in this reaction. The transformation properties of the differential cross section under CP are discussed. In contrast to theoretical expectations, experimental results at sqrt(s)=200 GeV for the reaction gamma p --> pi0 X show no evidence for odderon exchange. The upper limit on the cross section is an order of magnitude smaller than the theoretical estimate. It is argued that chiral symmetry leads to a large suppression, taking the thoeretical estimates well below the data. Two additional arguments are presented which may decrease the theoretical estimate further. The calculations are more sensitive to the assumptions made in evaluating the hadronic scattering amplitude than in the processes considered previously and lattice gauge calculations indicate that the odderon intercept may be appreciably lower than usually assumed. This report summarizes a study of the physics potential of the CLIC e+e- linear collider operating at centre-of-mass energies from 1 TeV to 5 TeV with luminosity of the order of 10^35 cm^-2 s^-1. First, the CLIC collider complex is surveyed, with emphasis on aspects related to its physics capabilities, particularly the luminosity and energy, and also possible polarization, \gamma\gamma and e-e- collisions. The next CLIC Test facility, CTF3, and its R&D programme are also reviewed. We then discuss aspects of experimentation at CLIC, including backgrounds and experimental conditions, and present a conceptual detector design used in the physics analyses, most of which use the nominal CLIC centre-of-mass energy of 3 TeV. CLIC contributions to Higgs physics could include completing the profile of a light Higgs boson by measuring rare decays and reconstructing the Higgs potential, or discovering one or more heavy Higgs bosons, or probing CP violation in the Higgs sector. Turning to physics beyond the Standard Model, CLIC might be able to complete the supersymmetric spectrum and make more precise measurements of sparticles detected previously at the LHC or a lower-energy linear e+e- collider: \gamma\gamma collisions and polarization would be particularly useful for these tasks. CLIC would also have unique capabilities for probing other possible extensions of the Standard Model, such as theories with extra dimensions or new vector resonances, new contact interactions and models with strong WW scattering at high energies. We study anomalous gauge-boson couplings induced by a locally SU(2) x U(1) invariant effective Lagrangian containing ten operators of dimension six built from the boson fields of the Standard Model (SM) before spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB). Rather moderate values of anomalous couplings allow m_H up to 500 GeV. At a future linear collider the triple-gauge-boson couplings gammaWW and ZWW can be measured in the reaction e+e- --> WW. We compare three approaches to anomalous gauge-boson couplings: the form-factor approach, the addition of anomalous coupling terms to the SM Lagrangian after and, as outlined above, before SSB. The translation of the bounds on the couplings from one approach to another is not straightforward. We relate the structure functions of deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering to current-current correlation functions in a Euclidean field theory depending on a parameter r. The r-dependent Hamiltonian of the theory is P0-(1-r)P3, with P0 the usual Hamiltonian and P3 the third component of the momentum operator. We show that small x in the structure functions correspond to the small r limit of the effective theory. We argue that for r->0 there is a critical regime of the theory where simple scaling relations should hold. We show that in this framework Regge behaviour of the structure functions obtained with the hard pomeron ansatz corresponds to a scaling behaviour of the matrix elements in the effective theory where the intercept of the hard pomeron appears as a critical index. Explicit expressions for various analytic continuations of structure functions and matrix elements are given as well as path integral representations for the matrix elements in the effective theory.
