Ribera del Duero, busca desentrañar la proyección global de las D.O. vitivinícolas a través de la construcción de la identidad de marca y la adaptación de estrategias de comunicación a diferentes culturas y lenguas. Partiendo de la premisa de que la construcción de la imagen de las D.O. tiene un impacto significativo en las oportunidades de internacionalización de las bodegas que representan, el estudio destaca el papel crucial que desempeñan estas denominaciones de origen en la promoción del prestigio y crecimiento del sector vitivinícola español, contribuyendo así a la marca colectiva Made in Spain. La metodología empleada combina enfoques descriptivos y analíticos, utilizando análisis de casos de estudio y técnicas de traducción para investigar la influencia de neologismos en la comunicación persuasiva. Se examinan dos neologismos específicos, Ribérate y Ribiértete, utilizados en la campaña de publicidad de la D.O. Ribera del Duero. The methodology employed combines descriptive and analytical approaches, using case study analysis and translation techniques to investigate the influence of neologisms in persuasive communication. In this study, the aim is to explore what genres can be found in applications used in preschool as a way to facilitate preschool teachers’ informed choices and raise awareness concerning the importance of choosing digital content carefully. In particular, applications that facilitate communication beyond a verbal majority language are in focus in this study. The research questions concern what the affordances are of applications used in preschool in relation to children’s agency and multilingual competencies and which kinds of genres that emerge from the applications’ affordances. Analyses of the applications were based on a social semiotic approach, in combination with the notion of translanguaging, taking into account many modes of communication, as well as different languages. The results illustrate how affordances include possibilities to listen to several spoken languages, opportunities to create documentation and produce stories in many different modes, including the verbal language of choice, but also restraints such as lack of opportunities for children’s agency in some applications with more closed composition. 10 genres are proposed which consist of three monolingual app-genres: talking picture books, storytelling and games, and seven app-genres that allow for several languages: talking picture books in more languages, multilingual storytelling, storytelling with recording possibilities, boardgames with recording possibilities, communication apps, draw-and-record apps and documentation apps. Conclusions highlight the importance of careful selection when choosing digital content in educational settings for younger children and that some of the app-genres proposed could be seen as facilitating digital pedagogical translanguaging.

d/Deaf people who prefer to use sign language have long faced challenges in accessing information and communication in hearing-dominated societies because many native signers learn written/spoken languages as a second language. Although researchers have worked hard on communication technologies for d/Deaf people, the complexity of d/Deaf communication in real-world scenarios, especially multilingualism and multiculturalism, has received relatively little attention in the HCI community. This study seeks to advance empirical understanding of d/Deaf communication through a case analysis of translation work conducted by online d/Deaf content creators in China. Based on semi-structured interviews with 13 d/Deaf content creators in China, I found that my participants faced a wide variety of languages and cultures when sharing content with a large audience from mixed language and cultural backgrounds. Hence, they had to connect a wide range of meaning-making systems, e.g., their full linguistic repertoire, to establish communication and also avoid miscommunication with various audiences. These findings will inform design of communication technologies for d/Deaf people, while also posing challenges to sign language technologies. Based on the findings, I argue for a pluralism-aware design approach when building sign language technologies.

Changing geo-political scenarios, especially in Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East, are displacing populations and reshaping societies. In this context, the provision of health care becomes even more challenging as the cultural and linguistic gaps add challenges to the highly complex interactions taking place within clinical settings. In this contribution, we analyze the main issues regarding effective communication in multilingual medical settings and propose to adopt a theoretical framework that allows to consider mono- and multi-lingual settings on a continuum, thus offering homogeneous tools for the analysis of misunderstandings and ineffective communication. We propose, first, to consider doctor-patient interactions by using the concept of activity type. We argue that, from this perspective, the most challenging aspect of this kind of interaction is not so much the quantitative knowledge disparity between the parties (somewhat foreseen by the preconditions of existence of the activity type itself), but rather the qualitative knowledge disparity. With ‘qualitative knowledge disparity’ we refer to two specific conditions that characterize this activity type: 1. The fact that at least one of the parties involved is defined by having a technical knowledge the other(s) do not share (or share only up to a certain degree); 2. As a consequence of point 1., the fact that the parties often do not share the criteria for the interpretation/assessment of the objective facts (symptoms and clinical parameters), which should constitute the starting point for decisions and actions. It focussed on communication between English speaking expatriate and local doctors from public and private hospitals with their Namibian and non-Namibian patients. The study’s aims were firstly, to determine the multilingual communicative resources and needs in the selected public health centres and private practices in Windhoek Khomas region. Secondly, the study sought to determine how communication is managed, from the perspective of the doctors. Finally, the study sought to determine the role played by the use of the English Language in a multilingual communicative context. The study utilised a qualitative research design and in order to achieve the above objectives, a qualitative questionnaire was completed by 17 medical doctors based in Windhoek. The data collected through the questionnaire was analysed by content analysis methods of coding and categorising. The findings revealed insights regarding linguistic profiles as well as the communicative aspects of multilingual doctor patient communication. Most of the respondent doctors are multilingual. However, it was realised that there are a few expatriate doctors who communicate solely in the English Language, while others use the English Language as well as one or more Namibian languages. Regarding communication between doctors and patients, it was realised that there is language discordance between doctors and some of their patients, especially in the public health facilities. In instances when the doctor cannot get-by as some referred to it, interpretation, is done by nurses, friends or other patients. However, while some did not object to interpretation, others reported of interpreters lacking in contextual knowledge which misleads the doctor’s judgement. Doctor of Intercultural Studies (DIS), This dissertation explores the missiological opportunities, challenges and implications of growing multilingualism among people who are fluent in two or more languages. I look at the cognitive value of language and how languages shape people's world views. World views influence peoples' perceptions and way of processing and understand information. People's beliefs are reflected in their character and relationships in the community. Christians want to promote positive community relations in order for people to participate in the mission of God within their community. I survey relevant literature on the role of language and its value, how language fits the plan of God, and its place in His mission to different peoples. I then survey current trends of language use and growing multilingualism, and the language practices within Kenya. I therefore focus on research factors behind language choice and use. Methodologically, I use focus groups, participant observation, and personal interviews in four different socio-linguistic contexts in four different Christian denominations. I thematically analyse and code the data to establish my findings. The findings point to the factors that influence language choice. Factors that determine choice of language go beyond the level of fluency in reading, speaking or understanding. These factors involve attitudes that go very deep in both positive and negative ways. Additionally, people's language choices are influenced by other social factors. The factors include desire to communicate, social cultural pressure, economic advancement, political correctness, reading materials availability, leadership perception on language, institutional policy, religious values and proficiency in any given language. These factors were consistently displayed in all four research locations enabling me to demonstrate reliability of the data and validity of the findings. This paper investigates how machine translation affects intercultural communication in practice. Based on communication in which multilingual communication system is applied, we identify four communication types and its' influences on stakeholders' communication process, especially focusing on establishment and maintenance of common ground. Different from our expectation that quality of machine translation results determines communication process largely, our data indicates communication relies more on a dynamic process where participants establish common ground than on reproducibility and grammatical accuracy.

The paper aims to explore novice translators' activities through translation process to identity possible reasons for errors. Legal translation domain is chosen in view of its significance for societal needs and human rights provision. The methodology included the relevant literature review, empirical observation and evaluation of novice translators' performance and their survey regarding their activities and perceptions thereof through the translation process. The analysis of translators' perceptions regarding their procedural activities included the discriminant and cluster analysis. Graduate students of Moscow universities were engaged in the experiment. The research findings prove that a translators' survey as a part of translation process could be an effective tool to improve the translation product quality. © 2017 International Information Institute.
