Data analysis workflows in many scientific domains have become increasingly complex and flexible. Here we assess the effect of this flexibility on the results of functional magnetic resonance imaging by asking 70 independent teams to analyse the same dataset, testing the same 9 ex-ante hypotheses1. The flexibility of analytical approaches is exemplified by the fact that no two teams chose identical workflows to analyse the data. This flexibility resulted in sizeable variation in the results of hypothesis tests, even for teams whose statistical maps were highly correlated at intermediate stages of the analysis pipeline. Variation in reported results was related to several aspects of analysis methodology. Notably, a meta-analytical approach that aggregated information across teams yielded a significant consensus in activated regions. Furthermore, prediction markets of researchers in the field revealed an overestimation of the likelihood of significant findings, even by researchers with direct knowledge of the dataset2–5. Our findings show that analytical flexibility can have substantial effects on scientific conclusions, and identify factors that may be related to variability in the analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging. The results emphasize the importance of validating and sharing complex analysis workflows, and demonstrate the need for performing and reporting multiple analyses of the same data. We identify two main obstacles in the implementation of this plan: (i) the lack of a coherent EU vision to drive future decision-making processes at state and local levels and (ii) the lack of methods to support a sustainable diffusion of AI in our society. The lack of a coherent vision stems from not considering societal differences across the EU member states. We suggest that these differences may lead to a fractured market and an AI crisis in which different members of the EU will adopt nation-centric strategies to exploit AI, thus preventing the development of a frictionless market as envisaged by the EU. Moreover, the Commission aims at changing the AI development culture proposing a human-centred and safety-first perspective that is not supported by methodological advancements, thus taking the risks of unforeseen social and societal impacts of AI. We discuss potential societal, technical, and methodological gaps that should be filled to avoid the risks of developing AI systems at the expense of society. Our analysis results in the recommendation that the EU regulators and policymakers consider how to complement the EC programme with rules and compensatory mechanisms to avoid market fragmentation due to local and global ambitions. Moreover, regulators should go beyond the human-centred approach establishing a research agenda seeking answers to the technical and methodological open questions regarding the development and assessment of human-AI co-action aiming for a sustainable AI diffusion in the society.

Disturbance in these ecosystems can release vast amounts of carbon through mineralization, depending on poorly understood factors, such as soil organic matter (SOM) quality and environmental factors. The meadows of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, which is the species with the larger carbon stocks, are currently under threat. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of cover loss on the SOM and microbial community composition in a P. oceanica meadow. For this purpose, soil cores were taken in dead, degraded and healthy areas in the same meadow. Cores were analyzed for total, inorganic and organic carbon and nitrogen contents, as well as for molecular SOM composition by analytical pyrolysis (fraction). Bacteria and archaea communities were assessed by 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding. The results showed the mineralization of polysaccharides and guaiacyl and syringyl lignin and a selective preservation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid moieties and methylene chain compounds. Soil depth and plant cover showed significant effects on microbial richness and diversity. Spatial variations in SOM inputs and microbial community composition between cores highlighted the importance of intra-meadow variability. Cover loss resulted in a release of soil organic carbon (1.8 fold decrease) and the boost of archaeal communities in the rhizosphere, whereas no effect was found in deeper layers. Our study demonstrates that seagrass cover loss enhances SOM mineralization and highlights the importance of soil stabilization against erosion to avoid the release of millenary SOM stocks.

Therefore, the severity accurate assessment is essential for the burned areas management because of it allows the identification of priority areas and, therefore, it helps to carry out recovery strategies and measures. The area of interest is located in the natural place of Las Peñuelas (Huelva), where a large fire took place on June 24, 2017 that affected almost 10 000 ha. The methodology was based on the calculation of the RBR (Relativized Burn Ratio) spectral index to estimate the severity of the fire, and the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) index to evaluate the recovery of vegetal vigor. For the work, images from the Sentinel-2 and Pleiades satellites, images acquired by UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) and field samplings were used. OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL) monotherapy during long-term treatment. METHODS: An open-label extension (OLE) study was conducted in adults completing a phase 3, randomized, double-blind, noninferiority trial, during which they had received monotherapy with either once-daily ESL or twice-daily controlled-release carbamazepine (CBZ-CR) for newly diagnosed focal epilepsy. In the OLE study, all patients received ESL (800-1600 mg/d) for 2 years. Primary efficacy outcome was retention time (from baseline of the OLE study). Secondary efficacy assessments included seizure freedom rate (no seizures during the OLE study) and responder rate (≥50% seizure frequency reduction from baseline of double-blind trial). Safety assessments included evaluation of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). RESULTS: Of 206 randomized patients, 96 who received ESL in the double-blind trial (ESL/ESL) and 88 who received CBZ-CR in the double-blind trial (CBZ-CR/ESL) were treated with ESL monotherapy (89.3% overall). Treatment retention time was similar between groups, with low probability of ESL withdrawal overall (<0.07 at any time). After 24 months, the probability of ESL withdrawal was 0.0638 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.0292-0.1366) in the ESL/ESL group and 0.0472 (95% CI = 0.0180-0.1210) in the CBZ-CR/ESL group. Seizure freedom rates were 90.6% (ESL/ESL) and 80.7% (CBZ-CR/ESL; P = .0531). Responder rates remained >80% in both groups throughout the study. Incidence of serious TEAEs was similar between groups (7.3% vs 5.7%; 0% vs 1.1% possibly related), as were the incidences of TEAEs considered at least possibly related to treatment (17.7% vs 18.2%) and TEAEs leading to discontinuation (3.1% vs 4.5%). The types of TEAEs were generally consistent with the known safety profile of ESL. A realization of the composite Higgs scenario in the context of the effective model with the $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_R$ symmetric four-Fermi interactions proposed by Miransky, Tanabashi and Yamawaki is studied. The model implements Nambu's mechanism of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking leading to the formation of $\bar tt$ and $\bar bb$ quark condensates. We explore the vacuum structure and spectrum of the model by using the Schwinger proper-time method. As a direct consequence of this mechanism, the Higgs acquires a mass in accord with its experimental value. The present prediction essentially differs from the known overestimated value, $m_\chi= 2m_t$, making more favourable the top condensation scenario presented here. The mass formulas for the members of the second Higgs doublet are also obtained. The Nambu sum rule is discussed. It is shown that the anomalous $U(1)_A$ symmetry breaking modifies this rule at next to leading order in $1/N_c$., Comment: 14 pages, version to appear in EPJC

We analyze the thermodynamical properties of a system of strongly interacting particles at vanishing quark chemical potential in the framework of a recently developed extension of the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model. In addition to eight quark interactions terms, non-canonical terms which explicitly break chiral symmetry up to the same order in a $1/N_c$ expansion ($N_c$ number of colors) are included. A recently proposed Polyakov potential is considered and the results are compared to lattice QCD data resulting in a favorable scenario for the recent model variants., Comment: To appear in the proceedings of "8th International Conference on Quarks and Nuclear Physics (QNP2018)"

We analyse the effects of the light and strange current quark masses on the phase diagram of QCD at finite temperature and vanishing baryonic chemical potential, computing the speed of sound, the trace anomaly of the energy momentum tensor and the fluctuations and correlations of the conserved charges associated to baryonic, electric and strangeness numbers. The framework is a known extension of the three flavor Nambu Jona Lasinio model, which includes the full set of explicit chiral symmetry breaking interactions (ESB) up to the same order in large $N_c$ counting as the 't Hooft flavor mixing terms and eight quark interactions. It is shown that the ESB terms are relevant for the description of a soft region in the system's speed of sound and overall slope behavior of the observables computed. At the same time the role of the 8q interactions gets highlighted. Extensions of the NJL model which go beyond the original 4-quark interaction, which drives the dynamical mass generation, have proven to be quite successful in describing low energy hadronic phenomenology. The inclusion of 8-quark interaction terms solved a metastability problem of the effective potential introduced by the inclusion of the 6-quark 't Hooft determinant term in the 3-flavor version of the model (needed to eliminate the unwanted U(1) axial symmetry) . This model, that has proven to be quite powerful and feature-rich, has been expanded to include all the spin-0 terms, without and with explicit chiral symmetry breaking, which are of the same order as the 't Hooft flavor determinant in a 1/Nc expansion resulting in an unprecedented success in reproducing the low lying scalar and pseudoscalar meson spectra. This success can be seen as a result of the inclusion of the full chiral symmetry breaking pattern. The two critical endpoints which are obtained in the temperature/chemical potential phase diagram are shifted to lower chemical potential and higher temperature when the effect of magnetic field is taken into account. [Abstract] This working paper presents the TRANSIT open-access online database on Critical Turning Points (CTP) in Transformative Social Innovation. It specifies the contents of the database, comprising qualitative accounts of more than 450 ‘critical’ episodes in the evolution of social innovation initiatives in 27 different countries. Providing the theoretical-methodological context to these data, the paper also describes the theoretical background of the CTP concept and the methodology though which the CTP accounts have been reconstructed through interviews with members of SI initiatives. The paper concludes with reflections on the open access CTP database as a knowledge infrastructure, discussing its significance in terms of mapping, dissemination and framing of social innovation.

Carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere (CDR) - also known as 'negative emissions' - features prominently in most 2 °C scenarios and has been under increased scrutiny by scientists, citizens, and policymakers. Critics argue that 'negative emission technologies' (NETs) are insufficiently mature to rely on them for climate stabilization. Some even argue that 2 °C is no longer feasible or might have unacceptable social and environmental costs. Nonetheless, the Paris Agreement endorsed an aspirational goal of limiting global warming to even lower levels, arguing that climate impacts - especially for vulnerable nations such as small island states - will be unacceptably severe in a 2 °C world. While there are few pathways to 2 °C that do not rely on negative emissions, 1.5 °C scenarios are barely conceivable without them. Building on previous assessments of NETs, we identify some urgent research needs to provide a more complete picture for reaching ambitious climate targets, and the role that NETs can play in reaching them.

The GraphBLAS standard (GraphBlas.org) is being developed to bring the potential of matrix-based graph algorithms to the broadest possible audience. Mathematically, the GraphBLAS defines a core set of matrix-based graph operations that can be used to implement a wide class of graph algorithms in a wide range of programming environments. This paper provides an introduction to the mathematics of the GraphBLAS. Graphs represent connections between vertices with edges. Matrices can represent a wide range of graphs using adjacency matrices or incidence matrices. Adjacency matrices are often easier to analyze while incidence matrices are often better for representing data. Fortunately, the two are easily connected by matrix multiplication. A key feature of matrix mathematics is that a very small number of matrix operations can be used to manipulate a very wide range of graphs. This composability of a small number of operations is the foundation of the GraphBLAS. A standard such as the GraphBLAS can only be effective if it has low performance overhead. Performance measurements of prototype GraphBLAS implementations indicate that the overhead is low.

Background: Studies in taxane and/or anthracycline refractory metastatic breast cancer (mBC) patients have shown approximately 30% response rates to irinotecan. Hence, a significant number of patients will experience irinotecan-induced side effects without obtaining any benefit. The aim of this study was to lay the groundwork for development of predictive biomarkers for irinotecan treatment in BC. Methods: We established BC cell lines with acquired or de novo resistance to SN-38, by exposing the human BC cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 to either stepwise increasing concentrations over 6months or an initial high dose of SN-38 (the active metabolite of irinotecan), respectively. The resistant cell lines were analyzed for cross-resistance to other anti-cancer drugs, global gene expression, growth rates, TOP1 and TOP2A gene copy numbers and protein expression, and inhibition of the breast cancer resistance protein (ABCG2/BCRP) drug efflux pump. Results: We found that the resistant cell lines showed 7-100 fold increased resistance to SN-38 but remained sensitive to docetaxel and the non-camptothecin Top1 inhibitor LMP400. The resistant cell lines were characterized by Top1 down-regulation, changed isoelectric points of Top1 and reduced growth rates. The gene and protein expression of ABCG2/BCRP was up-regulated in the resistant sub-lines and functional assays revealed BCRP as a key mediator of SN-38 resistance. Conclusions: Based on our preclinical results, we suggest analyzing the predictive value of the BCRP in breast cancer patients scheduled for irinotecan treatment. Moreover, LMP400 should be tested in a clinical setting in breast cancer patients with resistance to irinotecan.

A generalized 3 flavor Nambu-Jona--Lasinio Lagrangian including the explicit chiral symmetry breaking interactions which contribute at the same order in the large $1/N_c$ counting as the $U_A(1)$ 't Hooft flavor determinant is considered to obtain the mixing angles in the $\pi^0-\eta-\eta'$ system and related current quark mass ratios in close agreement with phenomenological values. It is important to mention that information needs to be regularly, quickly, effectively and inexpensively updated. These requirements could be covered with the help of Earth Observation technologies. In this project, radar images have been acquired from ALOS-PALSAR sensor from different years (2008 and 2010) over two pilot areas located in Huelva. The aim of the study has been to develop a methodology to estimate wood volumes based on the statistic correlation between radar signal and wood volume, variable extracted of forest management plans contemporary to images. As result, correlations of 0.8 and 0.7 have been obtained for pine and eucalyptus respectively. Forest biomass has been calculated using species-specific allometric equations. Three key sources of information have been used: a sample of plots distributed homogeneously, an accurate digital terrain model and a current forest map. Furthermore, the study of the variability of estimated volumes between these dates has been carried out. Methodologies obtained could be extrapolated to the whole region., [ES] La biomasa es un recurso forestal de gran importancia en Andalucía. Por ejemplo, la aplicación WEB “Biomasa Forestal en Andalucía” (Consejería de Medio Ambiente y Ordenación del Territorio, 2014) informa al usuario acerca de la ubicación y existencias de biomasa de las principales especies forestales de pino. En este artículo se presenta un estudio piloto donde se ha evaluado la tecnología radar, concretamente el sensor ALOS-PALSAR (Advanced Land Observing Satellite - Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar), para medir la biomasa forestal de dos montes públicos de Huelva en Junio de 2008 y de 2010. El objetivo ha sido desarrollar una metodología para la estimación de volúmenes maderables a partir de la correlación estadística de la señal radar con datos coetáneos de volumen maderable, variable extraída de planes de ordenación forestal. Como resultado, se han logrado correlaciones en torno a 0,8 y 0,7 en pino y eucalipto respectivamente. Para la obtención de biomasa a partir de los volúmenes estimados se han usado ecuaciones alométricas específicas para cada especie. Tres son las fuentes de información claves: una muestra de parcelas homogéneamente distribuidas, un modelo digital del terreno preciso y un mapa forestal actual. Por otro lado, se ha llevado a cabo el estudio de la variabilidad de volúmenes estimados entre las fechas mencionadas. La metodología obtenida podría extrapolarse a todo el territorio regional.

Stabilization at concentrations consistent with keeping global warming below 2 °C above the pre-industrial level will require drastic cuts in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions during the first half of the century; net negative emissions approaching 2100 are required in the vast majority of current emission scenarios. For negative emissions, the focus has been on bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), where carbon-neutral bioenergy would be combined with additional carbon capture thus yielding emissions lower than zero. Different BECCS technologies are considered around the world and one option that deserves special attention applies CCS to ethanol production. It is currently possible to eliminate 27.7 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 emissions per year through capture and storage of CO2 released during fermentation, which is part of sugar cane-based ethanol production in Brazil. Thus, BECCS could reduce the country’s emissions from energy production by roughly 5%. Such emissions are additional to those due to the substitution of biomass-based electricity for fossil-fueled power plants. This paper assesses the potential and cost effectiveness of negative emissions in the joint production system of ethanol and electricity based on sugar cane, bagasse, and other residues in Brazil. An important benefit is that CO2 can be captured twice along the proposed BECCS supply chain (once during fermentation and once during electricity generation). This study only considers BECCS from fermentation because capturing such CO2 is straightforward, thus potentially representing a cost-effective mitigation option for Brazil compared to other alternatives. The assessment shows that fuel prices would increase by less than 3.5% due to the adoption of BECCS from fermentation, while increasing investors’ revenues are sufficient to compensate for the investment required. Revista oficial de la Asociación Española de Teledetección, [EN] Biomass is a very important forest resource in Andalusia. “Forest Biomass in Andalusia” web tool, developed by the Andalusian Government, provides information about the location and biomass stock for the main pine forest species. It is important to mention that information needs to be regularly, quickly, effectively and inexpensively updated. These requirements could be covered with the help of Earth Observation technologies. In this project, radar images have been acquired from ALOS-PALSAR sensor from different years (2008 and 2010) over two pilot areas located in Huelva. The aim of the study has been to develop a methodology to estimate wood volumes based on the statistic correlation between radar signal and wood volume, variable extracted of forest management plans contemporary to images. As result, correlations of 0.8 and 0.7 have been obtained for pine and eucalyptus respectively. Forest biomass has been calculated using species-specific allometric equations. Three key sources of information have been used: a sample of plots distributed homogeneously, an accurate digital terrain model and a current forest map. Furthermore, the study of the variability of estimated volumes between these dates has been carried out. Por ejemplo, la aplicación WEB “Biomasa Forestal en Andalucía” (Consejería de Medio Ambiente y Ordenación del Territorio, 2014) informa al usuario acerca de la ubicación y existencias de biomasa de las principales especies forestales de pino. No obstante, se trata de una información que demanda ser actualizada periódicamente, con rapidez, eficacia y a bajo coste, requisitos que podría cubrir la tecnología basada en Observación de la Tierra. En este artículo se presenta un estudio piloto donde se ha evaluado la tecnología radar, concretamente el sensor ALOS-PALSAR (Advanced Land Observing Satellite - Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar), para medir la biomasa forestal de dos montes públicos de Huelva en Junio de 2008 y de 2010. El objetivo ha sido desarrollar una metodología para la estimación de volúmenes maderables a partir de la correlación estadística de la señal radar con datos coetáneos de volumen maderable, variable extraída de planes de ordenación forestal. Como resultado, se han logrado correlaciones en torno a 0,8 y 0,7 en pino y eucalipto respectivamente. Para la obtención de biomasa a partir de los volúmenes estimados se han usado ecuaciones alométricas específicas para cada especie. Tres son las fuentes de información claves: una muestra de parcelas homogéneamente distribuidas, un modelo digital del terreno preciso y un mapa forestal actual.
