The twisted stacking of two layered crystals has led to the emerging moiré physics as well as intriguing chiral phenomena such as chiral phonon and photon generation. In this work, we identified and theoretically formulated a non-trivial twist-enabled coupling mechanism in twisted bilayer photonic crystal (TBPC), which connects the bound state in the continuum (BIC) mode to the free space through the twist-enabled channel. Moreover, the radiation from TBPC hosts an optical vortex in the far field with both odd and even topological orders. We quantitatively analyzed the twist-enabled coupling between the BIC mode and other non-local modes in the photonic crystals, giving rise to radiation carrying orbital angular momentum. The optical vortex generation is robust against geometric disturbance, making TBPC a promising platform for well-defined vortex generation. As a result, TBPCs not only provide a new approach to manipulating the angular momentum of photons, but may also enable novel applications in integrated optical information processing and optical tweezers. Our work broadens the field of moiré photonics and paves the way toward the novel application of moiré physics.

This paper investigates system identification algorithms for modal identification of frame structures, such as a suspension bridge and an overhead transmission line-crossing frame, using ambient vibration measurements. The modal identification procedures include two novel blind source separation (BSS) algorithms, complexity pursuit method (CP) and generalized eigen decomposition method (GED), based on modern signal processing technology. Here, the frequency response function (FRF) method is introduced as an important reference to verify the effectiveness of the CP algorithm and GED algorithm. The effectiveness and accuracy of both types of algorithms are verified by numerical simulations and experiments on a suspension bridge. In addition, an engineering application of these two BSS methods is successfully implemented in an overhead transmission line-crossing frame. Urbanization often results in agricultural expansion but can also lead to farmland abandonment. However, it remains unclear about the extent, exact timing and determinants of farmland abandonment in response to ongoing urbanization. Using the example of China's Sunan economic region, we present the spatiotemporal trajectories of farmland abandonment and recultivation from 2001 to 2018. We classified Landsat satellite image time-series with a regression trees classifier in Google Earth Engine (GEE). Further, we analyzed the spatiotemporal patterns and rates of farmland abandonment and recultivation. Spatially-explicit logistic regressions were applied to explore the determinants of farmland abandonment in space and time. Our results show widespread farmland abandonment: approximately 232,700 ha of farmland had ever been abandoned from 2001 to 2018, with the highest annual abandonment rate (8.5%) in 2017. Approximately 66,200 ha of abandoned fields were later recultivated, with the maximum recultivated area (13,600 ha) in 2018. Approximately 92% of abandoned fields were later recultivated or reused as the impervious surface within two years of the first detection of abandonment, suggesting more rapid land transformation. The regressions reveal that locational and socio-economic factors determined farmland abandonment patterns. Specifically, a higher likelihood of farmland abandonment was statistically associated with an increased distance from the nearest settlements; the significantly positive relationship between ‘Non-agricultural GDP’ and farmland abandonment strengthened over time. In contrast, a lower likelihood of farmland abandonment was observed in areas with more cash crops. The statistical results may extend the application of the Ricardian comparative advantage theory along with Alonso's bid rent theory to explain and predict abandonment patterns in response to ongoing urbanization. This paper proposes a synthetic approach to design and implement a two-degree of freedom tuned mass damper (2DOFs TMD), aimed at damping bending and torsional modes of bridge decks (it can also be applied to other types of bridges like cable-stayed bridges to realize the energy dissipation). For verifying the effectiveness of the concept model, we cast the parameter optimization of the 2DOFs TMDs conceptual model as a control problem with decentralized static output feedback for minimizing the response of the bridge deck. For designing the expected modes of the 2DOFs TMDs, the graphical approach was introduced to arrange flexible beams properly according to the exact constraints. Based on the optimized frequency ratios, the dimensions of 2DOF TMDs are determined by the compliance matrix method. Finally, the mitigation effect was illustrated and verified by an experimental test on the suspension bridge mock-up. The results showed that the 2DOFs TMD is an effective structural response mitigation device used to mitigate the response of suspension bridges. This paper addresses the problem of damage detection in suspension bridge hangers, with an emphasis on the modal flexibility method. It aims at evaluating the capability and the accuracy of the modal flexibility method to detect and locate single and multiple damages in suspension bridge hangers, with different level of severity and various locations. The study is conducted numerically and experimentally on a laboratory suspension bridge mock-up. First, the covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification is used to extract the modal parameters of the bridge from experimental data, using only output measurements data from ambient vibration. Then, the method is demonstrated for several damage scenarios and compared against other classical methods, such as: Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion (COMAC), Enhanced Coordinate Modal Assurance Criterion (ECOMAC), Mode Shape Curvature (MSC) and Modal Strain Energy (MSE). This thesis investigates the structural health monitoring and damping of suspension bridges, focusing on the three core issues: modal identification, damage detection and passive damping.The first part (chapter 2) presents the models of a pedestrian bridge including numerical (FE) models and a laboratory mock-up. The second part (chapter 3) presents a study of system identification procedures for modal identification based on ambient vibration measurement. The proposed study contains the conventional methods and blind source separation (BSS) techniques, here the conventional methods are important references used to verify the effectiveness of the complexity pursuit (CP) algorithm and generalized eigen decomposition (GED) algorithm. Through comparing the identification accuracy, noise sensitivity and stability of each method, stochastic subspace identification (SSI) is a suitable modal identification method for suspension bridge.The third part (chapter 4) presents a successful, numerical and experimental implementa-tion of methods for damage detection in the hangers of suspension bridges. This study uses the modal flexibility (MF) method to detect the single and multiple damages with varied loca-tions and severity in the hangers. Alternatively, we investigated and validated experimentally the possibility to use active cables as a tool for exciting the structure to detect and locate damages in the hangers. Here, the sensitivity of the damage index can be enhanced by using several cables in multiple driving modes. This paper considers a Hilbert marginal spectrum-based approach to health monitoring of active suspension bridge hangers. The paper proposes to takes advantage of the presence of active cables and use them as an excitation mean of the bridge, while they are used for active damping. The Hilbert–Huang transform is used to calculate the Hilbert marginal spectrum and establish a damage index for each hanger of the suspension bridge. The paper aims to investigate the method experimentally, through a series of damage scenarios, on a laboratory suspension bridge mock-up equipped with four active cables; each active cable is made of a displacement actuator collocated with a force sensor. Different locations and levels of damage severity are implemented. Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are a very popular, economical and robust way of mitigating the dynamic response of civil engineering structures. However, their classical implementation involves as many TMDs as there are critical modes. This paper analyzes a TMD with two degrees of freedom targeted at mitigating simultaneously a bending and a torsion mode of a bridge deck. The system parameters can be tuned independently for the bending and the torsion mode. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been utilized as a highly effective and broad-spectrum antibacterial agent for surface modification of biomedical devices. However, the high mobility and subsequent hazardous effects of the particles on mammalian cells may limit its practical applications. Thus, Ag NPs were immobilized on the surface of sand-blasted, large grit, and acid-etched (SLA) titanium by manipulating the atomic-scale heating effect of silver plasma immersion ion implantation. The silver plasma immersion ion implantation-treated SLA surface gave rise to both good antibacterial activity and excellent compatibility with mammalian cells. The antibacterial activity rendered by the immobilized Ag NPs was assessed using Fusobacterium nucleatum and Staphylococcus aureus, commonly suspected pathogens for peri-implant disease. The immobilized Ag NPs offered a good defense against multiple cycles of bacteria attack in both F. nucleatum and S. aureus, and the mechanism was independent of silver release.
