In order to understand the potential for bioremediation, environmental factors such as landscape, soil type, texture, water content, organic carbon content, and microbial species diversity must be understood in order to optimize this process. To date, little research has been done on the effects of soil type, landscape and moisture status on bioremediation potential. This research deals with the mineralization of phenanthrene in diesel fuel (a) in a survey of soils, (b) along a landscape, and (c) under wetting and drying conditions in soil. In order to determine the remediation capacity of a range of soils, a survey was undertaken of 10 sites in the province of Manitoba. Along with uncontaminated soil samples, soil having previous contamination of hydrocarbons was also examined. The mineralization, volatilization and sorbed or residual $\sp{14}$C labeled phenanthrene in diesel was monitored in microcosms. The effect of landscape on the mineralization of phenanthrene in diesel fuel was assessed using air flow through systems in intact soil columns and static microcosms. The mineralization of glucose and phenanthrene under various moisture conditions was monitored using flow through microcosm systems. In this investigation of the two-phase, annular-mist flow of a condensing vapor, the following significant conclusions are drawn. The conclusions are based on the numerical results obtained from the theoretical analysis. Where appropriate, recommendations for future studies are included: 1. The analytical model accurately predicts the condenser length necessary for complete condensation and, with a reasonable degree of accuracy, the dynamic quality, heat transfer characteristics, and static pressure distribution. 2. An integral analysis is presented for which the assumed velocity and enthalpy profiles are the power-law type. For the range of temperatures and pressures encountered in this investigation, varying the profile shapes has a negligible effect on the dynamic quality and static pressure distributions at all except high vapor velocities. 3. The analysis accounts for the slip between the entrained particles and the vapor in the gas core. A constant entrainment slip ratio (SE) is assumed. Reducing the ratio below unity has an effect of the static pressure drop. The effect, however, is comparatively small. 4. Due to the lack of entrainment flow rate data available for two-phase, annular-mist, condensing flows, a variable entrainment correlation is included in the analysis.

A detailed analytical model was developed to include the effect of the melting process on a porous composite which retards its own heating rate by sacrificing its infiltrant. A transient one-dimensional heat-transfer analysis was conducted considering both the heats absorbed by melting and vaporization of the infiltrant from within the matrix. A finite-thickness liquid layer was seen to exist above the composite surface as a result of the flow of liquid coolant onto the surface induced by the expansion of the coolant on melting. There existed a period of time during which the melt layer was subject to both depletion due to vaporization and renewal by the flow of liquid coolant onto the surface. As the heating process continued the melt layer was depleted and the liquid coolant vaporized from within the tungsten matrix. The analysis was solved by finite-difference techniques and programmed for the IBM 7040/1401 Digital Computing System. An extensive search was conducted to determine the dependence of temperature on the thermophysical properties of seven different metallic coolants. Data were obtained for the various infiltrants up to that time at which the melt layer vaporizes completely from above the composite surface. A fundamental understanding of the effects of the melting process and of assuming variable properties on the early stages of the self-cooling process was obtained.
