Hydrodynamic motion can generate a flux of electron-spin’s angular momentum via the coupling between fluid rotation and electron spins. Such hydrodynamic generation, called spin hydrodynamic generation (SHDG), has recently attracted attention in a wide range of fields, especially in spintronics. Spintronics deals with spin-mediated interconversion taking place on a micro or nano scale because of the spin-diffusion length scale. To be fully incorporated into the interconversion, SHDG physics should also be established in such a minute scale, where most fluids exhibit a laminar flow. Here, we report electric voltage generation due to the SHDG in a laminar flow of a liquid-metal mercury. The experimental results show a scaling rule unique to the laminar-flow SHDG. Furthermore, its energy conversion efficiency turns out to be about 105 greater than of the turbulent one. Our findings reveal that the laminar-flow SHDG is suitable to downsizing and to extend the coverage of fluid spintronics.

The FUGIN CO survey with the Nobeyama 45-m Telescope revealed the 3D structure of a galactic shock wave in the tangential direction of the 4-kpc molecular arm. The shock front is located at G30.5+00.0+95 km/s on the up-stream (lower longitude) side of the star-forming complex W43 (G30.8-0.03), and composes a molecular bow shock (MBS) concave to W43, exhibiting an arc-shaped molecular ridge perpendicular to the galactic plane with width $\sim 0^\circ.1$ (10 pc) and vertical length $\sim 1^\circ \ (100\ {\rm pc})$. The MBS is coincident with the radio continuum bow of thermal origin, indicating association of ionized gas and similarity to a cometary bright-rimmed cloud. The up-stream edge of the bow is sharp with a growth width of $\sim 0.5$ pc indicative of shock front property. The velocity width is $\sim 10$ km/s, and the center velocity decreases by $\sim 15$ \kms from bottom to top of the bow. The total mass of molecular gas in MBS is estimated to be $\sim 1.2\times 10^6 <_\odot$ and ionized gas $\sim 2\times 10^4 M_\odot$. The vertical disk thickness increases step like at the MBS by $\sim 2$ times from lower to upper longitude, which indicates hydraulic-jump in the gaseous disk. We argue that the MBS was formed by the galactic shock compression of an accelerated flow in the spiral-arm potential encountering the W43 molecular complex. A bow-shock theory can well reproduce the bow morphology. We argue that molecular bows are common in galactic shock waves not only in the Galaxy but also in galaxies, where MBS are associated with giant cometary HII regions. We also analyzed the HI data in the same region to obtain a map of HI optical depth and molecular fraction. We present an unbiased large-scale (9 deg$^2$) CN ($N$=1-0) and C$^{18}$O ($J$=1-0) survey of Cygnus-X conducted with the Nobeyama 45m Cygnus-X CO survey. CN and C$^{18}$O are detected in various objects towards the Cygnus-X North and South (e.g., DR17, DR18, DR21, DR22, DR23, and W75N). We find that CN/C$^{18}$O integrated intensity ratios are systematically different from region to region, and are especially enhanced in DR17 and DR18 which are irradiated by the nearby OB stars. This result suggests that CN/C$^{18}$O ratios are enhanced via photodissociation reactions. We investigate the relation between the CN/C$^{18}$O ratio and strength of the UV radiation field. As a result, we find that CN/C$^{18}$O ratios correlate with the far-UV intensities, $G_0$. We also find that CN/C$^{18}$O ratios decrease inside molecular clouds, where the interstellar UV radiation is reduced due to the interstellar dust extinction. Complex transition metal hydrides have been identified as being materials for multi-functional applications holding potential as thermal energy storage materials, hydrogen storage materials and optical sensors. Na2Mg2NiH6(2Na+·2Mg2+·2H-·[NiH4]4-) is one such material. In this study, the decomposition pathway and thermodynamics have been explored for the first time, revealing that at 225 °C, hydrogen desorption commences with two major decomposition steps, with maximum H2desorption rates at 278 and 350 °C as measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The first step of decomposition results in the formation of Mg2NiHx(x < 0.3) and NaH, before these compounds decompose into Mg2Ni and Na, respectively. PCI analysis of Na2Mg2NiH6has determined the thermodynamics of decomposition for the first step to have a ?Hdesand ?Sdesof 83 kJ mol-1H2and 140 J K-1mol-1H2, respectively. Hydrogen cycling of the first step has been achieved for 10 cycles without any significant reduction in hydrogen capacity, with complete hydrogen desorption within 20 min at 395 °C. Despite the relatively high cost of Ni, the ability to effectively store hydrogen reversibly at operational temperatures of 318-568 °C should allow this material to be considered as a thermal energy storage material.

We carried out $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0) observations of the Galactic gamma-ray supernova remnant (SNR) Kesteven 79 using the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m radio telescope, which has an angular resolution of $\sim20$ arcsec. We identified molecular and atomic gas interacting with Kesteven 79 whose radial velocity is $\sim80$ km s$^{-1}$. The interacting molecular and atomic gases show good spatial correspondence with the X-ray and radio shells, which have an expanding motion with an expanding velocity of $\sim4$ km s$^{-1}$. The molecular gas associated with the radio and X-ray peaks also exhibits a high-intensity ratio of CO 3-2/1-0 $>$ 0.8, suggesting a kinematic temperature of $\sim24$ K, owing to heating by the supernova shock. We determined the kinematic distance to the SNR to be $\sim5.5$ kpc and the radius of the SNR to be $\sim8$ pc. The average interstellar proton density inside of the SNR is $\sim360$ cm$^{-3}$, of which atomic protons comprise only $\sim10$ $\%$. type:Journal Article, The dynamics of perpendicular transport of photoexcited carriers assisted by phonon scattering is investigated in a novel step-graded Inx(Al0.17Ga0.83)1-xAs quantum-well heterostructure by measuring the temperature dependence of spectrally and temporally resolved photoluminescence (PL). When builtin potential gradients are present in the quantum-well heterostructure due to variations in the In mole fraction (x) in the well, carriers that are thermally released by the particular well move unidirectionally from shallower to deeper wells. That is, asymmetric unidirectional motion of photoexcited carriers is possible via phonon-assisted activation above the barrier band-edge state. We have directly measured this perpendicular motion of photoexcited carriers by monitoring the transient PL signals from the different wells, which are spectrally separated. A rate equation analysis rigorously explains the dynamical changes of the PL signal intensities from the quantum wells as a function of lattice temperature. A central goal in current battery research is to increase the safety and energy density of Li-ion batteries. Electrolytes nowadays typically consist of lithium salts dissolved in organic solvents. Solid electrolytes could facilitate safer batteries with higher capacities, as they are compatible with Li-metal anodes, prevent Li dendrite formation, and eliminate risks associated with flammable organic solvents. Less than 10 years ago, LiBH4 was proposed as a solid-state electrolyte. It showed a high ionic conductivity, but only at elevated temperatures. Since then a range of other complex metal hydrides has been reported to show similar characteristics. Strategies have been developed to extend the high ionic conductivity of LiBH4 down to room temperature by partial anion substitution or nanoconfinement. The present paper reviews the recent developments in complex metal hydrides as solid electrolytes, discussing in detail LiBH4, strategies towards for fast room-temperature ionic conductors, alternative compounds, and first explorations of implementation of these electrolytes in all-solid-state batteries.

We present $Spitzer$/IRS mid-infrared spectral maps of the Galactic star-forming region M17 as well as IRSF/SIRIUS Br$\gamma$ and Nobeyama 45-m/FOREST $^{13}$CO ($J$=1--0) maps. The spectra show prominent features due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at wavelengths of 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.3, 12.0, 12.7, 13.5, and 14.2 $\mu$m. We find that the PAH emission features are bright in the region between the HII region traced by Br$\gamma$ and the molecular cloud traced by $^{13}$CO, supporting that the PAH emission originates mostly from photo-dissociation regions. Based on the spatially-resolved $Spitzer$/IRS maps, we examine spatial variations of the PAH properties in detail. As a result, we find that the interband ratio of PAH 7.7 $\mu$m/PAH 11.3 $\mu$m varies locally near M17SW, but rather independently of the distance from the OB stars in M17, suggesting that the degree of PAH ionization is mainly controlled by local conditions rather than the global UV environments determined by the OB stars in M17. We also find that the interband ratios of the PAH 12.0 $\mu$m, 12.7 $\mu$m, 13.5 $\mu$m, and 14.2 $\mu$m features to the PAH 11.3 $\mu$m feature are high near the M17 center, which suggests structural changes of PAHs through processing due to intense UV radiation, producing abundant edgy irregular PAHs near the M17 center., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, ApJ accepted

Complex transition metal hydrides have potential technological application as hydrogen storage materials, smart windows and sensors. Recent exploration of these materials has revealed that the incorporation of anionic hydrogen into these systems expands the potential number of viable complexes, while varying the countercation allows for optimisation of their thermodynamic stability. In this study, the optimised synthesis of Na2Mg2TH8 (T = Fe, Ru) has been achieved and their thermal decomposition properties studied by ex situ Powder X-ray Diffraction, Gas Chromatography and Pressure-Composition Isotherm measurements. The temperature and pathway of decomposition of these isostructural compounds differs considerably, with Na2Mg2FeH8 proceeding via NaMgH3 in a three-step process, while Na2Mg2RuH8 decomposes via Mg2RuH4 in a two-step process. The first desorption maxima of Na2Mg2FeH8 occurs at ca. 400 °C, while Na2Mg2RuH8 has its first maxima at 420°C. The enthalpy and entropy of desorption for Na2Mg2TH8 (T = Fe, Ru) has been established by PCI measurements, with the ?Hdes for Na2Mg2FeH8 being 94.5 kJ mol-1 H2 and 125 kJ mol-1 H2 for Na2Mg2RuH8. A new class of quaternary complex transition metal hydrides (Na2Mg2TH8 (T = Fe, Ru)) have been synthesized and their structures determined by combined synchrotron radiation X-ray and powder neutron diffraction. The compounds can be considered as a link between ionic and complex hydrides in terms of incorporating independently coordinated ionic and covalent hydrogen. These novel isostructural complex transition metal hydrides crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbam, where the octahedral complex hydride anion is surrounded by a cubic array of four Mg2+ and four Na+ cations, forming distinct two-dimensional layers. An intriguing feature of these materials is the distorted octahedral coordination of the isolated H− anions by four Na+ and two Mg2+ cations, which form layers between the transition metal containing layers. The vibrational modes of the H− anions and complex hydride anion are independently observed for the first time in a quaternary complex transition metal hydride system by Raman and IR spectroscopy.

The K hindrance to the gamma decay is studied in the warm rotating W-174 nucleus, focusing on the weakening of the selection rules of the K quantum number with increasing excitation energy. W-174 was populated by the fusion reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 target, and its gamma decay was detected by the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to a BaF2 multiplicity filter at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN. A fluctuation analysis of gamma coincidence matrices gives a similar number of low-K and high-K discrete excited bands. The results are compared to simulations of the gamma-decay flow based on a microscopic cranked shell model at finite temperature in which the K mixing is governed by the interplay of Coriolis force with the residual interaction. Agreement between simulations and experiment is obtained only by hindering the E1 decay between low-K and high-K bands by an amount compatible with that determined by spectroscopic studies of K isomers in the same mass region, with a similar trend with excitation energy. Although the role of leadership has been emphasized in facilitating learning in the workplace, there is limited systematic research directly linked to leadership and learning. This study investigated the characteristics of leadership behaviors that facilitate workplace learning, using data from a survey of 228 nursing managers in 22 hospitals. Results of structural equation modeling indicate that encouraging reflective practice plays a central role in enhancing workplace learning, and reflective practice was facilitated by clarifying the mission of the unit and promoting role modeling. The findings suggest that reflective practice combined with goal setting and social learning promotes workplace learning. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

The findings suggest that reflective practice combined with goal setting and social learning promotes workplace learning. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

The cell population within the periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue is remarkably heterogeneous1. Fibroblasts, a mixed population of cells, are the main cellular component of the PDL and the cell type most often studied for periodontal regeneration. Osteoblasts and osteoclasts are found on the bone side, while fibroblasts, macrophages, undifferentiated adult/mesenchymal stem cells, neural elements, and endothelial cells are found throughout the PDL. Epithelial rests of Malassez cells and cementoblasts are focused near the root surface. PDL tissue also includes loose connective tissue between dense fiber bundles that contain branches of the periodontal blood vessels and nerves2. The complexity of the PDL tissue, with its various cell types and cell progenitor components, explains the challenges involved in therapies to restore tissue following periodontal disease. Cementoblasts, osteoblasts, and endothelial cells must migrate, differentiate, and coordinately interact with a variety of soluble mediators to regenerate the periodontium3. Stem cells located in the PDL tissue are key contributors to this process4. Stem cells in the PDL are important not only for formation and maintenance of the tissue but also for repair, remodeling, and regeneration of adjacent alveolar bone and cementum5. Our laboratory has shown that progenitor cells isolated from PDL tissue by selection with cell surface markers STRO-1+ and CD146+ are capable of differentiating into chondrogenic, osteogenic, and adipogenic phenotypes under appropriate culture conditions

Structural transition properties of the LiBH4+xLiI (x=0–1.00) pseudobinary system were examined by powder x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry combined with periodic density functional theory calculations. We experimentally and computationally confirmed the stabilization of the high-temperature [hexagonal, lithium super(fast-)ionic conduction] phase of LiBH4 with x=0.33 and 1.00, and the results also imply the existence of intermediate phases with x=0.07–0.20. The studies are of importance for further development of LiBH4 and the derived hydrides as solid-state electrolytes. ©2009 American Institute of Physics

C-terminal deletion of the diacylglycerol kinase (Dgk) homologue of the cariogenic oral bacterium Streptococcus mutans resulted in loss of aciduricity. To confirm the role of the C terminus of the Dgk homologue in aciduricity, various mutants of S. mutans UA159 with a C-terminally truncated Dgk homologue were constructed. The deletion of one or two amino acid residues at the C terminus had no effect on the acid-tolerance properties of mutants. When further amino acid residues at the C terminus were removed, mutants became more acid-sensitive. The mutant with deletion of eight amino acid residues at the C terminus did not grow at pH 5.5, suggesting that the C-terminal tail of the Dgk homologue was indispensable for tolerance to acid stress in S. mutans. Kinase activity assays revealed that deletion of the C-terminal amino acids of Dgk led to a reduction of kinase activity for undecaprenol. A truncated mutant that had completely lost kinase activity was unable to grow at pH 5.5. These results suggest that the acid tolerance of S. mutans is closely related to kinase activity of the Dgk homologue. Additionally, the dgk deletion mutant exhibited markedly reduced levels of smooth-surface carious lesions in pathogen-free rats, despite there being no difference between the mutant and the parental organism in the extent of total smooth surface plaque. The results suggest that Dgk activity may play a direct role in the virulence of S. mutans.

We develop a quantum kinetic theory of the chiral condensate and meson quasi-particle excitations using the O(N) linear sigma model which describe the chiral phase transition both in and out of equilibrium in a unified way. A mean field approximation is formulated in the presence of mesonic quasi-particle excitations which are described by generalized Wigner functions. It is shown that in equilibrium our kinetic equations reduce to the gap equations which determine the equilibrium condensate amplitude and the effective masses of the quasi-particle excitations, while linearization of transport equations, near such equilibrium, determine the dispersion relations of the collective mesonic excitations at finite temperatures. Although all mass parameters for the meson excitations become at finite temperature, apparently violating the Goldstone theorem, the missing Nambu-Goldstone modes are retrieved in the collective excitations of the system as three degenerate phonon-like modes in the symmetry-broken phase. We show that the temperature dependence of the pole masses of the collective pion excitations has non-analytic kink behavior at the threshold of the quasi-particle excitations in the presence of explicit symmetry breaking interaction., Comment: 50 Pages, 13 figures

We formulate a kinetic theory of self-interacting meson fields with an aim to describe the freezeout stage of the space-time evolution of matter in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. Kinetic equations are obtained from the Heisenberg equation of motion for a single component real scalar quantum field taking the mean field approximation for the non-linear interaction. The mesonic mean field obeys the classical non-linear Klein-Gordon equation with a modification due to the coupling to mesonic quasi-particle excitations which are expressed in terms of the Wigner functions of the quantum fluctuations of the meson field, namely the statistical average of the bilinear forms of the meson creation and annihilation operators. In the long wavelength limit, the equations of motion of the diagonal components of the Wigner functions take a form of Vlasov equation with a particle source and sink which arises due to the non-vanishing off-diagonal components of the Wigner function expressing coherent pair-creation and pair-annihilation process in the presence of non-uniform condensate. We show that in the static homogeneous system, these kinetic equations reduce to the well-known gap equation in the Hartree approximation, and hence they may be considered as a generalization of the Hartree approximation method to non-equilibrium systems. As an application of these kinetic equations, we compute the dispersion relations of the collective mesonic excitations in the system near equilibrium., Comment: 45 pages, 9 figurs

The dynamics of perpendicular transport of photoexcited carriers assisted by phonon scattering is investigated in a novel step-graded In-x(Al0.17Ga0.83)(1-x)As quantum-well heterostructure by measuring the temperature dependence of spectrally and temporally resolved photoluminescence (PL). When builtin potential gradients are present in the quantum-well heterostructure due to variations in the In mole fraction (x) in the well, carriers that are thermally released by the particular well move unidirectionally from shallower to deeper wells. That is, asymmetric unidirectional motion of photoexcited carriers is possible via phonon-assisted activation above the barrier band-edge state. We have directly measured this perpendicular motion of photoexcited carriers by monitoring the transient PL signals from the different wells, which are spectrally separated. A rate equation analysis rigorously explains the dynamical changes of the PL signal intensities from the quantum wells as a function of lattice temperature. Our study of PL dynamics proves the asymmetric perpendicular flow of photoexcited carriers and the capture by the deeper quantum wells, providing firm evidence for the dynamical carrier flow and capture processes in the novel heterostructure.
