Hypolimnas misippus is a Batesian mimic of the toxic African Queen butterfly (Danaus chrysippus). Female H. misippus butterflies use two major wing patterning loci (M and A) to imitate three colour morphs of D. chrysippus found in different regions of Africa. In this study, we examine the evolution of the M locus and identify it as an example of adaptive atavism. This phenomenon involves a morphological reversion to an ancestral character that results in an adaptive phenotype. We show that H. misippus has re-evolved an ancestral wing pattern present in other Hypolimnas species, repurposing it for Batesian mimicry of a D. chrysippus morph. Using haplotagging, a linked-read sequencing technology, and our new analytical tool, Wrath, we discover two large transposable element (TE) insertions located at the M locus and establish that these insertions are present in the dominant allele responsible for producing mimetic phenotype. By conducting a comparative analysis involving additional Hypolimnas species, we demonstrate that the dominant allele is derived. This suggests that, in the derived allele, the TEs disrupt a cis-regulatory element, leading to the reversion to an ancestral phenotype that is then utilized for Batesian mimicry of a distinct model, a different morph of D. chrysippus. Our findings present a compelling instance of convergent evolution and adaptive atavism, in which the same pattern element has independently evolved multiple times in Hypolimnas butterflies, repeatedly playing a role in Batesian mimicry of diverse model species.

Overuse injuries, which have a high prevalence in sport, are suggested to result in different affective responses in comparison to traumatic injuries. Affects may also reciprocally act as risk factors for overuse injury. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between overuse injury and affects within a longitudinal follow-up design. Competitive athletes (N = 149) of various sports and levels of competition completed the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) and the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre Overuse injury questionnaire (OSTRC-O) once a week over 10 consecutive weeks. Bivariate unconditional latent curve model analyses with structured residuals were performed to evaluate the associations within and across weeks between OSTRC-O severity score and affects. Results indicated that OSTRC-O severity score and positive affects (PA) had a statistically significant negative within-week relation (r = −24.51, 95% CI = [−33.9, −15.1], p < 0.001). Higher scores of overuse injury were significantly related to lower levels of PA across weeks (ß = −0.02, 95% CI = [−0.04, −0.001], p = 0.044), while the reciprocal effect of PA on overuse injury was not significant (ß = −0.13, 95% CI = [−0.52, 0.26], p = 0.51). No statistically significant association was observed between OSTRC-O severity score and negative affects, neither within nor across weeks. Our findings suggest that overuse injury may have adverse psychological consequences on the long run through lessened PA and address the need for providing sustainable psychological support focusing upon such PA when working with athletes experiencing overuse injury. © 2024 The Author(s). Ferroelectric hafnium and zirconium oxides have undergone rapid scientific development over the last decade, pushing them to the forefront of ultralow-power electronic systems. Maximizing the potential application in memory devices or supercapacitors of these materials requires a combined effort by the scientific community to address technical limitations, which still hinder their application. Besides their favorable intrinsic material properties, HfO2-ZrO2 materials face challenges regarding their endurance, retention, wake-up effect, and high switching voltages. In this Roadmap, we intend to combine the expertise of chemistry, physics, material, and device engineers from leading experts in the ferroelectrics research community to set the direction of travel for these binary ferroelectric oxides. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art and offer readers an informed perspective of where this field is heading, what challenges need to be addressed, and possible applications and prospects for further development.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most common metabolic disorder in the world and an important risk factor for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). CT angiography represents the method of choice for the diagnosis, pre-operative planning, and follow-up of vascular disease. Low-energy dual-energy CT (DECT) virtual mono-energetic imaging (VMI) has been shown to improve image contrast, iodine signal, and may also lead to a reduction in contrast medium dose. In recent years, VMI has been improved with the use of a new algorithm called VMI+, able to obtain the best image contrast with the least possible image noise in low-keV reconstructions. Purpose: To evaluate the impact of VMI+ DECT reconstructions on quantitative and qualitative image quality in the evaluation of the lower extremity runoff. Materials and Methods: We evaluated DECT angiography of lower extremities in patients suffering from diabetes who had undergone clinically indicated DECT examinations between January 2018 and January 2023. Images were reconstructed with standard linear blending (F_0.5) and low VMI+ series were generated from 40 to 100 keV, in an interval of 15 keV. Vascular attenuation, image noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were calculated for objective analysis. Subjective analysis was performed using five-point scales to evaluate image quality, image noise, and diagnostic assessability of vessel contrast. Results: Our final study cohort consisted of 77 patients (41 males). Attenuation values, CNR, and SNR were higher in 40-keV VMI+ reconstructions compared to the remaining VMI+ and standard F_0.5 series (HU: 1180.41 ± 45.09; SNR: 29.91 ± 0.99; CNR: 28.60 ± 1.03 vs. HU 251.32 ± 7.13; SNR: 13.22 ± 0.44; CNR: 10.57 ± 0.39 in standard F_0.5 series) (p < 0.0001). Urine sedimentation in the bladder can occur in various circumstances and can lead to urinary obstruction/stasis with associated pain. It is usually diagnosed with an ultrasound; however, CT is also used to assess the amount and to further check for urinary stones. Depending on the composition, urine sedimentation and stones can be treated medically by alkalinisation of the urine with potassium sodium hydrogen citrate in the case of uric acid-based sedimentation/stones. Due to technical developments and improved material differentiation and characterisation in CT imaging, dual-energy CT allows for differentiation of uric acid from calcium, which can be used for sedimentation/stone composition analysis. Subsequently, treatment decisions can be made based on the findings in dual-energy CT.

Background: Injury to the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis (DTFS) is common in patients with trauma to the ankle, but diagnostic accuracy of conventional X-ray and CT is insufficient. A novel dual energy CT (DECT) post-processing algorithm enables color-coded mapping of collagenous structures, which can be utilized to assess the integrity of the DTFS. Methods: Patients were included in this retrospective study if they underwent third-generation dual-source DECT followed by 3T-MRI or ankle joint surgery within 14 days between January 2016 and December 2021. Three radiologists blinded to all patient data independently evaluated grayscale images and, after 8 weeks, grayscale and collagen mapping images for the presence of ligamentous injury or avulsion fractures of the DTFS. MRI and surgery provided the reference standard. Diagnostic accuracy parameters were calculated for all ratings, and a comparison of ROC curve analysis was performed to evaluate the incremental diagnostic value of color-coded images over grayscale images. Results: A total of 49 patients (median age 49 years; 32 males) were evaluated. Application of collagen mapping significantly increased sensitivity (25/30 [83%] vs. 20/30 [67%]), specificity (110/118 [93%] vs. 70/118 [60%]), positive predictive value (25/33 [76%] vs. 20/67 [30%]), negative predictive value (110/115 [96%] vs. 70/80 [88%]), and accuracy (134/147 [91%] vs. 90/147 [61%]) for the detection of injury to the DTFS (all parameters, p < 0.001). Collagen mapping achieved higher diagnostic confidence, image quality, and noise scores compared to grayscale CT (all parameters, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Collagen mapping yields substantially higher diagnostic accuracy and confidence for assessing the integrity of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis compared to grayscale CT in patients with acute trauma. The application of this algorithm can accelerate the adequate diagnosis and treatment of DTFS injury in clinical routine.

Barium inhalation usually relates to accidental aspiration during radiological procedures with an oral contrast agent. When present, barium lung deposits are visible as high-density opacities on chest X-ray or CT scan due to high atomic number, and they may be indistinguishable from calcifications. Dual-layer spectral CT has shown good material differentiation capabilities, due to its increased high-Z element range and smaller spectral separation between low- and high-energy spectral data. We present the case of a 17-year-old female with a history of tracheoesophageal fistula, who underwent chest CT angiography on a dual-layer spectral platform. Despite the close Z numbers and K-edge energy levels of the two different contrast materials, spectral CT was able to identify barium lung deposits from a previous swallowing study and to clearly distinguish them from calcium and the surrounding iodine-containing structures.

Chromosome rearrangements are thought to promote reproductive isolation between incipient species. However, it is unclear how often, and under what conditions, fission and fusion rearrangements act as barriers to gene flow. Here we investigate speciation between two largely sympatric fritillary butterflies, Brenthis daphne and Brenthis ino. We use a composite likelihood approach to infer the demographic history of these species from whole-genome sequence data. We then compare chromosome-level genome assemblies of individuals from each species and identify a total of nine chromosome fissions and fusions. Finally, we fit a demographic model where effective population sizes and effective migration rate vary across the genome, allowing us to quantify the effects of chromosome rearrangements on reproductive isolation. We show that chromosomes involved in rearrangements experienced less effective migration since the onset of species divergence and that genomic regions near rearrangement points have a further reduction in effective migration rate. Our results suggest that the evolution of multiple rearrangements in the B. daphne and B. ino populations, including alternative fusions of the same chromosomes, have resulted in a reduction in gene flow. Although fission and fusion of chromosomes are unlikely to be the only processes that have led to speciation between these butterflies, this study shows that these rearrangements can directly promote reproductive isolation and may be involved in speciation when karyotypes evolve quickly.

Identifying regions of the genome that act as barriers to gene flow between recently diverged taxa has remained challenging given the many evolutionary forces that generate variation in genetic diversity and divergence along the genome, and the stochastic nature of this variation. Progress has been impeded by a conceptual and methodological divide between analyses that infer the demographic history of speciation and genome scans aimed at identifying locally maladaptive alleles i.e. genomic barriers to gene flow. Here we implement genomewide IM blockwise likelihood estimation (), a composite likelihood approach for the quantification of barriers, that bridges this divide. This analytic framework captures background selection and selection against barriers in a model of isolation with migration (IM) as heterogeneity in effective population size (N$_{e}$) and effective migration rate (m$_{e}$), respectively. Variation in both effective demographic parameters is estimated in sliding windows via pre-computed likelihood grids. includes modules for pre-processing/filtering of genomic data and performing parametric bootstraps using coalescent simulations. To demonstrate the new approach, we analyse data from a well-studied pair of sister species of tropical butterflies with a known history of post-divergence gene flow: Heliconius melpomene and H. cydno. Our analyses uncover both large-effect barrier loci (including well-known wing-pattern genes) and a genome-wide signal of a polygenic barrier architecture.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to systematically identify studies and synthesise data that examined psychosocial risk factors for overuse injuries in athletes. DESIGN: Systematic review. DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE, Web of Science and PsycINFO databases, supplemented by hand searching of journals and reference lists. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES: Quantitative and qualitative studies involving competitive athletes, published prior to July 2021, and reporting the relationship between psychosocial variables and overuse injury as an outcome were reviewed. This was limited to academic peer-reviewed journals in Swedish, English, German, Spanish and French. An assessment of the risk of bias was performed using modified versions of the RoBANS and SBU Quality Assessment Scale for Qualitative Studies. RESULTS: Nine quantitative and five qualitative studies evaluating 1061 athletes and 27 psychosocial factors were included for review. Intra-personal factors, inter-personal factors and sociocultural factors were found to be related to the risk of overuse injury when synthesised and reported according to a narrative synthesis approach. Importantly, these psychosocial factors, and the potential mechanisms describing how they might contribute to overuse injury development, appeared to be different compared with those already known for traumatic injuries. CONCLUSIONS: There is preliminary evidence that overuse injuries are likely to partially result from complex interactions between psychosocial factors. Coaches and supporting staff are encouraged to acknowledge the similarities and differences between traumatic and overuse injury aetiology.

This study aimed to explore how stakeholders in athletics perceive the relevance of injury prevention, determine their communication preferences, and describe their expectations regarding injury prevention. We conducted a cross-sectional study using an exploratory online survey with high-level athletes (i. e. listed by the French ministry of sports), non-high-level athletes (i. e. all competitive level except high-level athletes), coaches, and health professionals licensed with the French Federation of Athletics. The survey was composed of three parts regarding stakeholder's characteristics (4 questions), perceived relevance (2 questions), communication preferences and expectations (3 questions) towards injury prevention. There were 2,864 responders to the survey. Almost all responders found that injury prevention is relevant (97.7% [95% CI 97.0% to 98.2%]), without any significant differences in the distribution between stakeholders' age, experience and sex (p >0.05). About three-quarters of the stakeholders preferred to find injury prevention information on a website (77.4%) without significant differences between stakeholders' categories (p >0.05); other media to find injury prevention information was chosen by less than 50% of responders. Expectations about injury prevention were mainly explanations, advice and tips about injury knowledge, management and prevention, based on expert opinion and/or scientific research. In conclusion, these results confirm that injury prevention is a challenge shared by numerous stakeholders in athletics, within France, and provide some orientation on how and what information to disseminate to these stakeholders. © 2022 Georg Thieme Verlag. Vaccination represents one of the fundamentals in the fight against SARS-CoV-2. Myocarditis has been reported as a rare but possible adverse consequence of different vaccines, and its clinical presentation can range from mild symptoms to acute heart failure. We report a case of a 29-year-old man who presented with fever and retrosternal pain after receiving SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and laboratory data revealed typical findings of acute myocarditis.

Purpose: To identify transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) thrombosis in abdominal CT scans applying quantitative image analysis. Materials and methods: We retrospectively screened 184 patients to include 20 patients (male, 8; female, 12; mean age, 60.7 ± 8.87 years) with (case, n = 10) and without (control, n = 10) in-TIPS thrombosis who underwent clinically indicated contrast-enhanced and unenhanced abdominal CT followed by conventional TIPS-angiography between 08/2014 and 06/2020. First, images were scored visually. Second, region of interest (ROI) based quantitative measurements of CT attenuation were performed in the inferior vena cava (IVC), portal vein and in four TIPS locations. Minimum, maximum and average Hounsfield unit (HU) values were used as absolute and relative quantitative features. We analyzed the features with univariate testing. Results: Subjective scores identified in-TIPS thrombosis in contrast-enhanced scans with an accuracy of 0.667 – 0.833. Patients with in-TIPS thrombosis had significantly lower average (p < 0.001), minimum (p < 0.001) and maximum HU (p = 0.043) in contrast-enhanced images. The in-TIPS / IVC ratio in contrast-enhanced images was significantly lower in patients with in-TIPS thrombosis (p < 0.001). No significant differences were found for unenhanced images. Analyzing the visually most suspicious ROI with consecutive calculation of its ratio to the IVC, all patients with a ratio < 1 suffered from in-TIPS thrombosis (p < 0.001, sensitivity and specificity = 100%). Conclusion: Quantitative analysis of abdominal CT scans facilitates the stratification of in-TIPS thrombosis. In contrast-enhanced scans, an in-TIPS / IVC ratio < 1 could non-invasively stratify all patients with in-TIPS thrombosis.

Purpose: To assess and correlate pulmonary involvement and outcome of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia with the degree of coronary plaque burden based on the CAC-DRS classification (Coronary Artery Calcium Data and Reporting System). Methods: This retrospective study included 142 patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia (58 ± 16 years; 57 women) who underwent non-contrast CT between January 2020 and August 2021 and were followed up for 129 ± 72 days. One experienced blinded radiologist analyzed CT series for the presence and extent of calcified plaque burden according to the visual and quantitative HU-based CAC-DRS Score. Pulmonary involvement was automatically evaluated with a dedicated software prototype by another two experienced radiologists and expressed as Opacity Score. Results: CAC-DRS Scores derived from visual and quantitative image evaluation correlated well with the Opacity Score (r=0.81, 95% CI 0.76-0.86, and r=0.83, 95% CI 0.77-0.89, respectively; p<0.0001) with higher correlation in severe than in mild stage SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia (p<0.0001). Combined, CAC-DRS and Opacity Scores revealed great potential to discriminate fatal outcomes from a mild course of disease (AUC 0.938, 95% CI 0.89-0.97), and the need for intensive care treatment (AUC 0.801, 95% CI 0.77-0.83). Visual and quantitative CAC-DRS Scores provided independent prognostic information on all-cause mortality (p=0.0016 and p<0.0001, respectively), both in univariate and multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Coronary plaque burden is strongly correlated to pulmonary involvement, adverse outcome, and death due to respiratory failure in patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia, offering great potential to identify individuals at high risk.

OBJECTIVES: To identify individual characteristics associated with the adoption of injury risk reduction programmes (IRRP) and to investigate the variations in sociocognitive determinants (ie, attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and intentions) of IRRP adoption in athletics (track and field) athletes. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using an online survey sent to athletes licensed with the French Federation of Athletics to investigate their habits and sociocognitive determinants of IRRP adoption. Sociodemographic characteristics, sports practice and history of previous injuries were also recorded. Logistic regression analyses and group comparisons were performed. RESULTS: The final sample was composed of 7715 athletes. From the multivariable analysis, competing at the highest level was positively associated with IRRP adoption (adjusted OR (AOR)=1.66; 99.9% CI 1.39 to 1.99 and AOR=1.48; 99.9% CI 1.22 to 1.80) and presenting a low number of past injuries was negatively associated with IRRP adoption (AOR=0.48; 99.9% CI 0.35 to 0.65 and AOR=0.61; 99.9% CI 0.44 to 0.84), both during their lifetime and the current season, respectively. These results were supported by higher scores of sociocognitive determinants among athletes who reported IRRP adoption compared with other athletes. CONCLUSION: Some characteristics of athletes seem to be associated with IRRP adoption either positively (competing at the highest level) or negatively (presenting a lower number of past injuries), whereas all the sociocognitive determinants tested appear to be linked to IRRP adoption. Since many athlete characteristics are difficult or impossible to change, IRRP promotion may be enhanced by targeting athletes' beliefs and intentions to adopt an IRRP. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2022. Purpose: To investigate the diagnostic performance of noise-optimized virtual monoenergetic images (VMI+) in dual-energy CT (DECT) of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) compared to standard reconstructions. Method: This retrospective, single-center study included 107 patients (68 men; mean age, 60.1 ± 10.7 years) with malignant or cirrhotic liver disease and suspected PVT who had undergone contrast-enhanced portal-phase DECT of the abdomen. Linearly blended (M_0.6) and virtual monoenergetic images were calculated using both standard VMI and noise-optimized VMI+ algorithms in 20 keV increments from 40 to 100 keV. Quantitative measurements were performed in the portal vein for objective contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) calculation. The image series showing the greatest CNR were further assessed for subjective image quality and diagnostic accuracy of PVT detection by two blinded radiologists. Results: PVT was present in 38 subjects. VMI+ reconstructions at 40 keV revealed the best objective image quality (CNR, 9.6 ± 4.3) compared to all other image reconstructions (p < 0.01). In the standard VMI series, CNR peaked at 60 keV (CNR, 4.7 ± 2.1). Qualitative image parameters showed the highest image quality rating scores for the 60 keV VMI+ series (median, 4) (p ≤ 0.03). The greatest diagnostic accuracy for the diagnosis of PVT was found for the 40 keV VMI+ series (sensitivity, 96%; specificity, 96%) compared to M_0.6 images (sensitivity, 87%; specificity, 92%), 60 keV VMI (sensitivity, 87%; specificity, 97%), and 60 keV VMI+ reconstructions (sensitivity, 92%; specificity, 97%) (p ≤ 0.01). Conclusions: Low-keV VMI+ reconstructions resulted in significantly improved diagnostic performance for the detection of PVT compared to other DECT reconstruction algorithms.

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) represents a common approach to the diagnostic workup of patients with suspected coronary artery disease. Technological development has recently allowed the integration of conventional CCTA information with spectral data. Spectral CCTA used in clinical routine may allow for improving CCTA diagnostic performance by measuring myocardial iodine distribution as a marker of first-pass perfusion, thus providing additional functional information about coronary artery disease.

Background: This study investigates the correlation and discriminative diagnostic accuracy of dual-energy CT (DECT)-derived imaging biomarkers in patients with acute pancreatitis of varying severity. Methods: In this retrospective study, we included 51 patients with acute pancreatitis who had undergone portal-venous phase DECT of the abdomen. Three blinded readers independently performed region-of-interest measurements on DECT images in the inflammatory pancreatic parenchyma. The correlation between modified CT severity index (CTSI) and quantitative imaging parameters was investigated using Pearson correlation coefficient. We performed receiver operator curve (ROC) analysis to assess diagnostic accuracy of the quantitative image parameters for the differentiation between mild/moderate versus severe acute pancreatitis. The optimal discriminative cut-off value to diagnose severe acute pancreatitis was determined using the Youden index. Results: Moderate correlations were found between CTSI scores and iodine density (Pearson’s correlation coefficient r = −0.65; p < 0.001), as well as attenuation (r = −0.55; p < 0.001) and normalized iodine uptake (r = −0.50; p < 0.001). ROC curve analysis revealed highest ability to differentiate mild/moderate from severe acute pancreatitis for iodine density (AUC = 0.86, 95% confidence interval 0.75 to 0.97). An optimal iodine density threshold of ≤1.63 mg/mL was found to indicate severe acute pancreatitis with a sensitivity of 81.3% and specificity of 77.1%. Conclusion: DECT-derived iodine density correlates with acute pancreatitis severity and may facilitate prediction of severe acute pancreatitis.

Milkweed butterflies in the genus Danaus are studied in a diverse range of research fields including the neurobiology of migration, biochemistry of plant detoxification, host-parasite interactions, evolution of sex chromosomes, and speciation. We have assembled a nearly chromosomal genome for Danaus chrysippus (known as the African Monarch, African Queen, and Plain Tiger) using long-read sequencing data. This species is of particular interest for the study of genome structural change and its consequences for evolution. Comparison with the genome of the North American Monarch Danaus plexippus reveals generally strong synteny but highlights 3 inversion differences. The 3 chromosomes involved were previously found to carry peaks of intraspecific differentiation in D. chrysippus in Africa, suggesting that these inversions may be polymorphic and associated with local adaptation. The D. chrysippus genome is over 40% larger than that of D. plexippus, and nearly all of the additional ∼100 Megabases of DNA comprises repeats. Future comparative genomic studies within this genus will shed light on the evolution of genome architecture.

Eligibility Criteria for Selecting Studies: Quantitative and qualitative studies involving competitive athletes, published prior to July 2021, and reporting the relationship between psychosocial variables and overuse injury as an outcome were reviewed. This was limited to academic peer-reviewed journals in Swedish, English, German, Spanish and French. An assessment of the risk of bias was performed using modifed versions of the RoBANS and SBU Quality Assessment Scale for Qualitative Studies. Results: Nine quantitative and fve qualitative studies evaluating 1061 athletes and 27 psychosocial factors were included for review. Intra-personal factors, inter-personal factors and sociocultural factors were found to be related to the risk of overuse injury when synthesised and reported according to a narrative synthesis approach. Importantly, these psychosocial factors, and the potential mechanisms describing how they might contribute to overuse injury development, appeared to be diferent compared with those already known for traumatic injuries. Conclusions: There is preliminary evidence that overuse injuries are likely to partially result from complex interactions between psychosocial factors. Tant a l'acadèmia com a la indústria, s'estan invertint molts recursos en el desenvolupament de mètodes que permetin avaluar la sostenibilitat d’una cadena de subministrament i els proveidors que la formen. Després d'una revisió bibliogràfica exhaustiva, una selecció qualitativa i quantitativa d'indicadors clau de rendiment, així com diverses entrevistes i qüestionaris a diferents experts en sostenibilitat i cadenes de subministrament tant acadèmics com de la indústria; aquesta tesi proposa un marc conceptual com a base per desenvolupar un model d’evaluació de la sostenibilitat de lq configuració de cadenes de subministrament. El model proposat permet avaluar numèricament, centrant-se en el proveïdor principal i les condicions aigües amunt i aigües avall, la sostenibilitat d'una configuració de subministrament i classificar-les en relació al resultat, de millor a pitjor. Els valors matemàtics assignats es calculen assignant pesos relatius als diferents aspectes de sostenibilitat dels proveïdors. Aquests pesos s'obtenen aplicant el Mètode de Jerarquia Analítica sobre criteris subjectius amb informació recopilada a través del mètode Delphi. Aquest model servirà per donar suport a les decisions de configuració del subministrament que permetran millorar l'exercici de sostenibilitat de les cadenes de subministrament., The sustainability of our evermore complex and global supply chains is an important concern in strategic supply chain management. In both academia and industry, important resources are invested into developing methods for evaluating supply chain sustainability. After a thorough literature review, a qualitative and quantitative selection of key performance indicators, as well as several interviews and questionnaires to different sustainability and supply experts of the industry; this thesis proposes a conceptual framework as a base to develop a supply chain sustainability evaluation model. The proposed model allows to evaluate, focusing on the main supplier and its upstream and downstream conditions, the sustainability of a supply set-up numerically and rank them accordingly. The assigned mathematical values are calculated upon assigning relative weights to the different supplier sustainability feedback. These weights are obtained by applying the Analytical Hierarchy Method on subjective criteria with information gathered via the Delphi method. The result is constructed as a simple but efficient tool, leveraging the maximum accuracy with minimum effort for both supply managers and suppliers to assess and manage the required information to support on supply set-up decisions which will enable improvement on the sustainability performance of supply chains.

Highlights • MRI and ultrasound provided significant correlations between findings suggestive of vasculitis and the final diagnosis. • Careful selection of available imaging techniques is warranted considering the time course, location, and clinical history. • Considering its moderate diagnostic power to distinguish tracer uptake, a holistic view of PET/CT findings is essential. Abstract Purpose: To assess the diagnostic value of different imaging modalities in distinguishing systemic vasculitis from other internal and immunological diseases. Methods: This retrospective study included 134 patients with suspected vasculitis who underwent ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) between 01/2010 and 01/2019, finally consisting of 70 individuals with vasculitis. The main study parameter was the confirmation of the diagnosis using one of the three different imaging modalities, with the adjudicated clinical and histopathological diagnosis as the gold standard. A secondary parameter was the morphological appearance of the vessel affected by vasculitis. Results: Patients with systemic vasculitis had myriad clinical manifestations with joint pain as the most common symptom. We found significant correlations between different imaging findings suggestive of vasculitis and the final adjudicated clinical diagnosis. In this context, on MRI, vessel wall thickening, edema, and diameter differed significantly between vasculitis and non-vasculitis groups (p < 0.05). Ultrasound revealed different findings that may serve as red flags in identifying patients with vasculitis, such as vascular occlusion or halo sign (p = 0.02 vs. non-vasculitis group). Interestingly, comparing maximal standardized uptake values from PET/CT examinations with vessel wall thickening or vessel diameter did not result in significant differences (p > 0.05). The project has brought together a European consortium of specialists in benthic ecology and seabed habitat mapping. The partners first collaborated in EMODnet phase 1 (2009-2012) to deliver a prototype predictive seabed habitat map in four trial basins (Greater North Sea, Celtic Seas, Baltic, Western Mediterranean). This predictive model was named EUSeaMap (Cameron and Askew, 2011). In EMODnet Phase 2 (2012-2016), the consortium extended EUSeaMap coverage to all European regions (Populus et al, 2017). In phase 3 (2017-2021), a first version (2019) extended the spatial coverage further North in order to include the Barents Sea, developed better environmental data were incorporated, and dramatically improved the spatial detail. The new version, developed in the period 2019-2021 and named 2021, is substantially evolved from the previous version as it accounts for new seabed substrate data published by EMODnet Geology in 2021, including in Denmark, Estonia, France, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Norway and Spain, 2) is published in new classifications, including the new version of the marine section of EUNIS, named EUNIS 2019 and 3) addresses some issues identified in EUSeaMap 2019.

Background Dual-source dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) offers the potential for opportunistic osteoporosis screening by enabling phantomless bone mineral density (BMD) quantification. This study sought to assess the accuracy and precision of volumetric BMD measurement using dual-source DECT in comparison to quantitative CT (QCT). Methods A validated spine phantom consisting of three lumbar vertebra equivalents with 50 (L1), 100 (L2), and 200 mg/cm(3) (L3) calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) concentrations was scanned employing third-generation dual-source DECT and QCT. While BMD assessment based on QCT required an additional standardised bone density calibration phantom, the DECT technique operated by using a dedicated postprocessing software based on material decomposition without requiring calibration phantoms. Accuracy and precision of both modalities were compared by calculating measurement errors. In addition, correlation and agreement analyses were performed using Pearson correlation, linear regression, and Bland-Altman plots. Results DECT-derived BMD values differed significantly from those obtained by QCT (p < 0.001) and were found to be closer to true HA concentrations. Relative measurement errors were significantly smaller for DECT in comparison to QCT (L1, 0.94% versus 9.68%; L2, 0.28% versus 5.74%; L3, 0.24% versus 3.67%, respectively). DECT demonstrated better BMD measurement repeatability compared to QCT (coefficient of variance < 4.29% for DECT, < 6.74% for QCT). Both methods correlated well to each other (r = 0.9993; 95% confidence interval 0.9984-0.9997; p < 0.001) and revealed substantial agreement in Bland-Altman plots. Conclusions Phantomless dual-source DECT-based BMD assessment of lumbar vertebra equivalents using material decomposition showed higher diagnostic accuracy compared to QCT.

Objectives: To evaluate the predictive value of volumetric bone mineral density (BMD) assessment of the lumbar spine derived from phantomless dual-energy CT (DECT)-based volumetric material decomposition as an indicator for the 2-year occurrence risk of osteoporosis-associated fractures. Methods: L1 of 92 patients (46 men, 46 women; mean age, 64 years, range, 19–103 years) who had undergone third-generation dual-source DECT between 01/2016 and 12/2018 was retrospectively analyzed. For phantomless BMD assessment, dedicated DECT postprocessing software using material decomposition was applied. Digital files of all patients were sighted for 2 years following DECT to obtain the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to calculate cut-off values and logistic regression models were used to determine associations of BMD, sex, and age with the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures. Results: A DECT-derived BMD cut-off of 93.70 mg/cm3 yielded 85.45% sensitivity and 89.19% specificity for the prediction to sustain one or more osteoporosis-associated fractures within 2 years after BMD measurement. DECT-derived BMD was significantly associated with the occurrence of new fractures (odds ratio of 0.8710, 95% CI, 0.091–0.9375, p < .001), indicating a protective effect of increased DECT-derived BMD values. Overall AUC was 0.9373 (CI, 0.867–0.977, p < .001) for the differentiation of patients who sustained osteoporosis-associated fractures within 2 years of BMD assessment. Conclusions: Retrospective DECT-based volumetric BMD assessment can accurately predict the 2-year risk to sustain an osteoporosis-associated fracture in at-risk patients without requiring a calibration phantom. Lower DECT-based BMD values are strongly associated with an increased risk to sustain fragility fractures. Objectives: To compare radiation dose and image quality of single-energy (SECT) and dual-energy (DECT) head and neck CT examinations performed with second- and third-generation dual-source CT (DSCT) in matched patient cohorts. Methods: 200 patients (mean age 55.1 ± 16.9 years) who underwent venous phase head and neck CT with a vendor-preset protocol were retrospectively divided into four equal groups (n = 50) matched by gender and BMI: second (Group A, SECT, 100-kV; Group B, DECT, 80/Sn140-kV), and third-generation DSCT (Group C, SECT, 100-kV; Group D, DECT, 90/Sn150-kV). Assess- ment of radiation dose was performed for an average scan length of 27 cm. Contrast-to-noise ratio measure- ments and dose-independent figure-of-merit calcu- lations of the submandibular gland, thyroid, internal jugular vein, and common carotid artery were analyzed quantitatively. Qualitative image parameters were evalu- ated regarding overall image quality, artifacts and reader confidence using 5-point Likert scales. Results: Effective radiation dose (ED) was not signifi- cantly different between SECT and DECT acquisition for each scanner generation (p = 0.10). Significantly lower effective radiation dose (p < 0.01) values were observed for third-generation DSCT groups C (1.1 ± 0.2 mSv) and D (1.0 ± 0.3 mSv) compared to second-generation DSCT groups A (1.8 ± 0.1 mSv) and B (1.6 ± 0.2 mSv). Figure-of- merit/contrast-to-noise ratio analysis revealed superior results for third-generation DECT Group D compared to all other groups. Qualitative image parameters showed non-significant differences between all groups (p > 0.06). Conclusion: Contrast-enhanced head and neck DECT can be performed with second- and third-generation DSCT systems without radiation penalty or impaired image quality compared with SECT, while third-generation DSCT is the most dose efficient acquisition method. Dual-energy CT (DECT) has emerged into clinical routine as an imaging technique with unique postprocessing utilities that improve the evaluation of different body areas. The virtual non-calcium (VNCa) reconstruction algorithm has shown beneficial effects on the depiction of bone marrow pathologies such as bone marrow edema. Its main advantage is the ability to substantially increase the image contrast of structures that are usually covered with calcium mineral, such as calcified vessels or bone marrow, and to depict a large number of traumatic, inflammatory, infiltrative, and degenerative disorders affecting either the spine or the appendicular skeleton. Therefore, VNCa imaging represents another step forward for DECT to image conditions and disorders that usually require the use of more expensive and time-consuming techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography/CT, or bone scintigraphy. The aim of this review article is to explain the technical background of VNCa imaging, showcase its applicability in the different body regions, and provide an updated outlook on the clinical impact of this technique, which goes beyond the sole improvement in image quality.

Objectives: To compare dual-energy CT (DECT) and MRI for assessing presence and extent of traumatic bone marrow edema (BME) and fracture line depiction in acute vertebral fractures. Methods: Eighty-eight consecutive patients who underwent dual-source DECT and 3-T MRI of the spine were retrospectively analyzed. Five radiologists assessed all vertebrae for presence and extent of BME and for identification of acute fracture lines on MRI and, after 12 weeks, on DECT series. Additionally, image quality, image noise, and diagnostic confidence for overall diagnosis of acute vertebral fracture were assessed. Quantitative analysis of CT numbers was performed by a sixth radiologist. Two radiologists analyzed MRI and grayscale DECT series to define the reference standard. Results: For assessing BME presence and extent, DECT showed high sensitivity (89% and 84%, respectively) and specificity (98% in both), and similarly high diagnostic confidence compared to MRI (2.30 vs. 2.32; range 0–3) for the detection of BME (p = .72). For evaluating acute fracture lines, MRI achieved high specificity (95%), moderate sensitivity (76%), and a significantly lower diagnostic confidence compared to DECT (2.42 vs. 2.62, range 0–3) (p < .001). A cutoff value of − 0.43 HU provided a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 90% for diagnosing BME, with an overall AUC of 0.96. Conclusions: DECT and MRI provide high diagnostic confidence and image quality for assessing acute vertebral fractures. While DECT achieved high overall diagnostic accuracy in the analysis of BME presence and extent, MRI provided moderate sensitivity and lower confidence for evaluating fracture lines.

Objectives: To correlate the radiological assessment of the mastoid facial canal in postoperative cochlear implant (CI) cone-beam CT (CBCT) and other possible contributing clinical or implant-related factors with postoperative facial nerve stimulation (FNS) occurrence. Methods: Two experienced radiologists evaluated retrospectively 215 postoperative post-CI CBCT examinations. The mastoid facial canal diameter, wall thickness, distance between the electrode cable and mastoid facial canal, and facial-chorda tympani angle were assessed. Additionally, the intracochlear position and the insertion angle and depth of electrodes were evaluated. Clinical data were analyzed for postoperative FNS within 1.5-year follow-up, CI type, onset, and causes for hearing loss such as otosclerosis, meningitis, and history of previous ear surgeries. Postoperative FNS was correlated with the measurements and clinical data using logistic regression. Results: Within the study population (mean age: 56 ± 18 years), ten patients presented with FNS. The correlations between FNS and facial canal diameter (p = 0.09), wall thickness (p = 0.27), distance to CI cable (p = 0.44), and angle with chorda tympani (p = 0.75) were statistically non-significant. There were statistical significances for previous history of meningitis/encephalitis (p = 0.001), extracochlear-electrode-contacts (p = 0.002), scala-vestibuli position (p = 0.02), younger patients’ age (p = 0.03), lateral-wall-electrode type (p = 0.04), and early/childhood onset hearing loss (p = 0.04). Histories of meningitis/encephalitis and extracochlear-electrode-contacts were included in the first two steps of the multivariate logistic regression. Conclusion: The mastoid-facial canal radiological assessment and the positional relationship with the CI electrode provide no predictor of postoperative FNS. Histories of meningitis/encephalitis and extracochlear-electrode-contacts are important risk factors.

Background: Dual-source dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) offers the potential for opportunistic osteoporosis screening by enabling phantomless bone mineral density (BMD) quantification. This study sought to assess the accuracy and precision of volumetric BMD measurement using dual-source DECT in comparison to quantitative CT (QCT). Methods: A validated spine phantom consisting of three lumbar vertebra equivalents with 50 (L1), 100 (L2), and 200 mg/cm3 (L3) calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) concentrations was scanned employing third-generation dual-source DECT and QCT. While BMD assessment based on QCT required an additional standardised bone density calibration phantom, the DECT technique operated by using a dedicated postprocessing software based on material decomposition without requiring calibration phantoms. Accuracy and precision of both modalities were compared by calculating measurement errors. In addition, correlation and agreement analyses were performed using Pearson correlation, linear regression, and Bland-Altman plots. Results: DECT-derived BMD values differed significantly from those obtained by QCT (p < 0.001) and were found to be closer to true HA concentrations. Relative measurement errors were significantly smaller for DECT in comparison to QCT (L1, 0.94% versus 9.68%; L2, 0.28% versus 5.74%; L3, 0.24% versus 3.67%, respectively). DECT demonstrated better BMD measurement repeatability compared to QCT (coefficient of variance < 4.29% for DECT, < 6.74% for QCT). Both methods correlated well to each other (r = 0.9993; 95% confidence interval 0.9984–0.9997; p < 0.001) and revealed substantial agreement in Bland-Altman plots. Conclusions: Phantomless dual-source DECT-based BMD assessment of lumbar vertebra equivalents using material decomposition showed higher diagnostic accuracy compared to QCT.

Background: To assess the potential of radiomic features to quantify components of blood in intraaortic vessels to non-invasively predict moderate-to-severe anemia in non-contrast enhanced CT scans. Methods: One hundred patients (median age, 69 years; range, 19–94 years) who received CT scans of the thoracolumbar spine and blood-testing for hemoglobin and hematocrit levels ± 24 h between 08/2018 and 11/2019 were retrospectively included. Intraaortic blood was segmented using a spherical volume of interest of 1 cm diameter with consecutive radiomic analysis applying PyRadiomics software. Feature selection was performed applying analysis of correlation and collinearity. The final feature set was obtained to differentiate moderate-to-severe anemia. Random forest machine learning was applied and predictive performance was assessed. A decision-tree was obtained to propose a cut-off value of CT Hounsfield units (HU). Results: High correlation with hemoglobin and hematocrit levels was shown for first-order radiomic features (p < 0.001 to p = 0.032). The top 3 features showed high correlation to hemoglobin values (p) and minimal collinearity (r) to the top ranked feature Median (p < 0.001), Energy (p = 0.002, r = 0.387), Minimum (p = 0.032, r = 0.437). Median (p < 0.001) and Minimum (p = 0.003) differed in moderate-to-severe anemia compared to non-anemic state. Median yielded superiority to the combination of Median and Minimum (p(AUC) = 0.015, p(precision) = 0.017, p(accuracy) = 0.612) in the predictive performance employing random forest analysis. A Median HU value ≤ 36.5 indicated moderate-to-severe anemia (accuracy = 0.90, precision = 0.80). Conclusions: First-order radiomic features correlate with hemoglobin levels and may be feasible for the prediction of moderate-to-severe anemia. High dimensional radiomic features did not aid augmenting the data in our exemplary use case of intraluminal blood component assessment.

Simple Summary: Early and accurate diagnosis of breast cancer that has spread to other organs and tissues is crucial, as therapeutic decisions and outcome expectations might change. Computed tomography (CT) is often used to detect breast cancer’s spread, but this method has its weaknesses. The computer-assisted technique “radiomics” extracts grey-level patterns, so-called radiomic features, from medical images, which may reflect underlying biological processes. Our retrospective study therefore evaluated whether breast cancer spread can be predicted by radiomic features derived from iodine maps, an application on a new generation of CT scanners visualizing tissue blood flow. Based on 77 patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer, we found that this approach might indeed predict cancer spread to other organs/tissues. In the future, radiomics may serve as an additional tool for cancer detection and risk assessment. Abstract: Dual-energy CT (DECT) iodine maps enable quantification of iodine concentrations as a marker for tissue vascularization. We investigated whether iodine map radiomic features derived from staging DECT enable prediction of breast cancer metastatic status, and whether textural differ- ences exist between primary breast cancers and metastases. Seventy-seven treatment-naïve patients with biopsy-proven breast cancers were included retrospectively (41 non-metastatic, 36 metastatic). Radiomic features including first-, second-, and higher-order metrics as well as shape descriptors were extracted from volumes of interest on iodine maps. Following principal component analysis, a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-NN) was used for classification (70% of cases for training, 30% validation). Histopathology served as reference standard. MLP-NN predicted metastatic status with AUCs of up to 0.94, and accuracies of up to 92.6 in the training and 82.6 in the validation datasets. Purpose: To stratify differences in visual semantic and quantitative imaging features in intensive care patients with nonspecific mastoid effusions versus patients with acute mastoiditis (AM) requiring surgical treatment. Methods: We included 48 patients (male, 28; female, 20; mean age, 59.5 ± 18.1 years) with mastoid opacification (AM, n = 24; control, n = 24) who underwent clinically indicated cerebral CT between 12/2007 and 07/2018 in this retrospective study. Semantic features described the extend and asymmetry of mastoid and middle-ear cavity opacification and complications like erosive changes. Minimum, maximum and mean Hounsfield unit (HU) values were obtained as quantitative features. We analyzed the features employing univariate testing. Results: Compared to intensive care patients, AM patients revealed asymmetric mastoid or middle-ear cavity opacification (likelihood-ratio (LR) < 0.001). Applying a dedicated threshold of the extent of opacification, AM patients reached significance levels of LR = 0.042 and 0.002 for mastoid and middle-ear cavity opacification. AM cases showed higher maximum and mean HU values (p = 0.009, p = 0.024). Conclusions: We revealed that the extent and asymmetry of mastoid and middle-ear cavity opacification differs significantly between AM patients and intensive care patients. Multicenter research is needed to expand our cohort and possibly pave the way to build a non-invasive predictive model for AM in the future.

Overuse injuries account for a substantial part of sport injury incidence among athletes of various sports and levels. Despite the gradual onset of symptoms, athletes often persevere in training and competing. The present exploratory study aimed to identify a psychological risk profile for overuse injury. One hundred and forty-nine athletes competing in various sports responded to a range of questionnaires measuring the following psychological variables: negative life stress, perfectionistic concerns, perfectionistic strivings, athletic identity, and the coach-athlete relationship. Participants subsequently answered the OSTRC Overuse Injury Questionnaire on a weekly basis during a 10-week period. Using a latent profile analysis, athletes were classified into three latent profiles regarding their psychological characteristics. Athletes in the second profile, characterized by a combination of high athletic identity, perfectionistic concerns and negative life stress and poor coach-athlete relationship, were found to be significantly more often affected by overuse injuries (74% of the time) than individuals in the two other profiles (52% and 48% of the time, respectively). In conclusion, psychological factors may contribute to the risk of overuse injuries through complex interactions (i.e. accounting for interdependencies within a specific configuration of variables) rather than through their independent influences © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group

Objectives: To prospectively evaluate lung ultrasound in comparison with radiography and computed tomography (CT) for detecting HIV-related lung diseases. Methods: Ultrasound examinations in HIV-positive patients were evaluated by three raters; available conventional imaging was evaluated by another rater. Results were compared with each other and the definite diagnosis. Interrater reliability was calculated for each finding. Results: Eighty HIV-positive patients received lung ultrasound examinations; 74 received conventional imaging. The overall sensitivity was 97.5% for CT, 90.7% for ultrasound and 78.1% for radiography. The most common diagnoses were Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (21 cases) and bacterial pneumonia (17 cases). The most frequent and sensitive ultrasonographic findings were interstitial abnormalities indicated by B-lines, independent of the aetiology. Interrater reliability was high for interstitial abnormalities (ICC=0.82). The interrater reliability for consolidations and effusion increased during the study (r=0.88 and r=0.37, respectively). Conclusions: Ultrasound is a fast, reliable and sensitive point-of-care tool, particularly in detecting interstitial lung disease, which is common in HIV-associated illness. It does not effectively discriminate between different aetiologies. A longer learning period might be required to reliably identify consolidations and effusions.

EUSeaMap 2019 is the third iteration of EUSeaMap. All versions have been produced as part of the EMODnet Seabed Habitats project, which is one of several thematic lots in EMODnet. The project has brought together a European consortium of specialists in benthic ecology and seabed habitat mapping. The partners first collaborated in EMODnet phase 1 (2009-2012) to deliver a prototype predictive seabed habitat map in four trial basins (Greater North Sea, Celtic Seas, Baltic, Western Mediterranean). This predictive model was named EUSeaMap (Cameron and Askew, 2011). In EMODnet Phase 2 (2012-2016), the consortium extended EUSeaMap coverage to all European regions (Populus et al, 2017). In the new version, the spatial coverage was extended further North in order to include the Barents Sea. The spatial detail was substantially improved. This was made possible by improvements to the physical predictor variables created by the other EMODnet lots which are the input data to the EUSeaMap model. A substantial revision of the map creation process has also been carried out in order to make it more reproducible. This document describes all these modifications which have led to the elaboration of EUSeaMap 2019.
