Trench and borehole sampling data were used to investigate the composition of the Au mineralisation and the metasomatically altered rocks at the Zolotoye deposit in Russia. The data show the presence of mineralised zones 1-28 m thick with vein/veinlet silicification and with an Au grade of 1.2-5.8 g/t, and metasomatic zones with a grade of 0.2-2.8 g/t Au at intervals of 2-47 m. U-Pb and Rb-Sr dating indicate two phases of beresitisation at 698-720 and 555-600 Ma. Sulphide mineralisation within the Kyzyl-Tashtyg ore cluster in Russia consists of three types, igneous-sedimentary mainly sulphidic, hydrothermal-metasomatic sulphide polymetallic and hydrothermal barite polymetallic. A model for economic deposits is discussed based on formational, lithological-stratigraphic, igneous and structural factors. The geological and genetic model was used to develop a map for predicting the occurrence of economic mineralisation. Exploration drilling confirmed a continuation of ore-bearing structures along the eastern flank of the deposit, with thin massive sulphide polymetallic ores. Drilling at the Karovy site intersected fragments of hydrothermally altered rocks, sulphur-sulphide and polymetallic sulphide ores in the upper level of the ore clusters. Below this level was a zone with altered fluid porphyries and sulphide dissemination and Au- and Ag-bearing barite and barite- polymetallic veins about 1.5-2 m thick.
