This chapter deploys assemblage theory and thinking to bring together a unique set of insights on the seabed ranging from the ecological, to legal, practice to theoretical. It does so with a particular aim in mind: to integrate debates pertinent to understanding the frontier space of the sea floor. Whilst there are increasing calls for interdisciplinary integration in the marine sciences, combining the natural and social sciences research on the space of the seabed and its potential for mining tends to be siloed with work addressing component parts of such possible processes: ecosystem and ecosystem service aspects, legal dimensions, and geopolitical aspects, to name but a few. Whilst these contributions touch upon intersecting issues (society and environment; law and economics, and so on) they remained centered on particular disciplinary and scientific offerings to understanding the seabed and prospect of seabed mining. This chapter offers a thoroughly ‘joined up’ approach, which presents a prism through which to better understand the issues at stake in venturing to the new vertical frontiers of ocean extraction.

Samhällsekonomisk konsekvensanalys av delområde i Bottenhavet utifrån samrådsförslag för havsplan Bottniska viken. Bakgrund Genom miljöbalken(1998:808) och havsplaneringsförordningen(2015:400) har Sverige införlivat EU:s ramdirektiv för havsplanering (2014/89/EU) i svensk lagstiftning. Enligt miljöbalken ska det finnas tre statliga havsplaner – en för Bottniska viken, en för Östersjön och en för Västerhavet. Planerna ska ge vägledning till myndigheter och kommuner vid planläggning och prövning av anspråk på användning av området. Havsplanerna ska omfatta Sveriges ekonomiska zon och de områden som inte ingår i fastigheter i svenskt territorialhav från en nautisk mil utanför den baslinje som avses i lagen om Sveriges sjöterritorium (2017: 1272). Havsplanerna beslutas av regeringen. Enligt havsplaneringsförordningen ska Havs- och vattenmyndigheten ta fram förslag till havsplaner med hjälp av berörda länsstyrelser och med stöd från nationella myndigheter som ska bistå med underlag för planeringen. Planförslaget ska integrera miljömål samt näringspolitiska och sociala mål. De tre havsplanerna ska bedömas utifrån vilka konsekvenser användningen kan antas få. En miljökonsekvensbeskrivning (MKB) har upprättats och en samlad hållbarhetsbedömning har tagits fram där även ekonomiska och sociala konsekvenser redovisas. Havsplaneringen är en process som genomförs över flera år och som kan beskrivas i cykler. Processen omfattar flera olika steg från informationsinsamling och nulägesanalys till planering där havsplanerna utgör resultaten av planeringsprocesserna. Havs- och vattenmyndighetens målsättning är att förslag till havsplaner ska överlämnas till regeringen år 2019. Inför samrådsfasen kring de föreslagna havsplanerna (februari – augusti 2018) har COWI AB på uppdrag av Havs- och vattenmyndigheten vidareutvecklat de miljökonsekvensbeskrivningar och den hållbarhets-bedömning som tagits fram tidigare i planeringsprocessen. I rapporten presenteras och värderas nyttor och konsekvenser avseende ekonomiska aspekter av hållbarhet i delområde i Kattegatt och samrådsförslag havsplan Västerhavet.

This study describes a proposal for a new tool on how to incorporate an ecosystem services approach into the maritime spatial planning process. The proposed tool provides a prototype for a stepwise methodology to analyze linkages between maritime activities and ecosystem services, and to assess the status of marine ecosystem services as a part of the MSP process. The report addresses the Nordic cooperation needs, economic valuation of ecosystem services and trade-offs between concurrent uses of marine areas and ecosystem services. The study shows that making use of the proposed methodology enables and facilitates the incorporation of an ecosystem services approach in the planning process. However, in order to fully assess its possibilities, and the needs for further improvements, future work should focus on applying the methodology on a comprehensive marine spatial planning case.

Undesirable landscape changes, especially from large infrastructure projects, may give rise to large welfare losses due to degraded landscape experiences. These losses are largely unaccounted for in Nordic countries’ planning processes. There is a need to develop practical methods of including people’s preferences and the value of landscape impacts in policy assessments and decision-making. The project aims to explore how the ecosystem service approach and values of landscape experiences can be better incorporated in actual cases. The project developed a two-step approach to assess, value and incorporate landscape impacts and tested these in case studies based on EIA documentation. We found that despite the lack of information generated in the EIAs, the step-wise method significantly improved upon evidence and conclusions of how people are impacted due to landscape changes.

I den danske fornavnemode findes en række navne i flere forskellige stavemåder som ikke har indflydelse på navnenes udtale. Navnene udtales ens hvad enten de staves Carl eller Karl og Camilla eller Kamilla. Med udgangspunkt i de 50 mest populære pige- og drengenavne hvert år siden 1985 har jeg set på hvordan den lyd som i dansk retstavning normalt skrives med bogstavet k, skrives i tidens fornavne. Noget tyder på at man ønsker en mere international stavemåde idet stavemåder med c er hyppigere end stavemåder med det hjemlige k.

Descriptions of Danish dialects often concentrate on phenomena that disappear concurrently with modernisation and urbanisation, and due to influence from standard Danish. The aim of the present article is slightly different in focusing on the new words that come into use in the Danish dialects in the period 1850-1920. The main emphasis is laid on words belonging to agricultural terminology. Four concepts are examined in greater details, and the article argues that the neologisms within the period are not just loan words from the standard language, there are also examples of words and meanings that must be of local origin. The primary sources used in this study are Ømålsordbogen (i.e. The Dictionary of the Insular Dialects) and its collections.

In order to have future relevance in capturing value and giving support to policy-makers, valuation methods must specifically address resource accounting, priority setting, and instrument design. This report provides an overview of economic valuation methods of ecosystem services from watersheds in the Nordic countries. The study was commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers and conducted by The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, The Norwegian Institute of Water Research and Sweco Norge during the period May – November 2011. Talt færøsk sprog opfattes tit af udenforstående som islandsk sprog. Og de, der haropholdt sig i Island eller kan sproget dér, forsøger tit at tale islandsk på Færøerne.Det færøske skriftsprog minder meget om islandsk, så hvis man taler tydeligtislandsk, kan det være en hjælp. Situationen er dog den, at de østnordiske sprogforstås fuldt ud på Færøerne, både i skrift og tale, medens det kniber med at forståislandsk. Artiklen er en kort præsentation af det færøske sprogs struktur, ordbøjningog nogle eksempler på orddannelse og forskellige lag og strukturer i ordforrådet.
