The neutron-rich strontium, zirconium, and molybdenum nuclei have been observed to undergo a dramatic evolution, becoming strongly deformed around =60, sometimes interpreted as a quantum phase transition between “normal” and intruder configurations. Key to understanding this evolution is to understand the configurations in isolation, in regions where interference can be neglected. A deformed coexisting configuration is inferred from the presence of a 0+ 2 state which decreases in excitation energy with increasing neutron number, becoming the first-excited state at 98Mo. We present here the results of a low-energy Coulomb-excitation measurement of the nucleus 96Mo, extracting ⁡( ⁢2) values and quadrupole moments. It is found that, while the ⁡( ⁢2) values agree with those found in the literature, there is a significant disagreement with literature spectroscopic quadrupole moments. The results are compared with shell-model calculations using a 88Sr core with good agreement found, likely indicating that intruder structures do not significantly impact the ground-state structure, in contrast with the heavier molybdenum isotopes.

We measured the $^{57}$Zn $\beta$-delayed proton ($\beta$p) and $\gamma$ emission at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. We find a $^{57}$Zn half-life of 43.6 $\pm$ 0.2 ms, $\beta$p branching ratio of (84.7 $\pm$ 1.4)%, and identify four transitions corresponding to the exotic $\beta$-$\gamma$-$p$ decay mode, the second such identification in the $f p$-shell. The $p/\gamma$ ratio was used to correct for isospin mixing while determining the $^{57}$Zn mass via the isobaric multiplet mass equation. Previously, it was uncertain as to whether the rp-process flow could bypass the textbook waiting point $^{56}$Ni for astrophysical conditions relevant to Type-I X-ray bursts. Our results definitively establish the existence of the $^{56}$Ni bypass, with 14-17% of the $rp$-process flow taking this route.

The electroweak interaction in the Standard Model (SM) is described by a pure vector-axial-vector structure, though any Lorentz-invariant component could contribute. In this work, we present the most precise measurement of tensor currents in the low-energy regime by examining the $\beta$-$\bar{\nu}$ correlation of trapped $^{8}$Li ions with the Beta-decay Paul Trap. We find $a_{\beta\nu} = -0.3325 \pm 0.0013_{stat} \pm 0.0019_{syst}$ at $1\sigma$ for the case of coupling to right-handed neutrinos $(C_T=-C_T')$, which is consistent with the SM prediction., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Nuclear Astrophysics is a field at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics, which seeks to understand the nuclear engines of astronomical objects and the origin of the chemical elements. This white paper summarizes progress and status of the field, the new open questions that have emerged, and the tremendous scientific opportunities that have opened up with major advances in capabilities across an ever growing number of disciplines and subfields that need to be integrated. We take a holistic view of the field discussing the unique challenges and opportunities in nuclear astrophysics in regards to science, diversity, education, and the interdisciplinarity and breadth of the field. The lifetimes of the first excited 2(+) states in the N = Z nuclei Zr-80, Y-78, and Sr-76 have been measured using the gamma-ray line shape method following population via nucleon-knockout reactions from intermediate-energy rare-isotope beams. The extracted reduced electromagnetic transition strengths yield new information on where the collectivity is maximized and provide evidence for a significant, and as yet unexplained, odd-odd vs even-even staggering in the observed values. Energy differences between isobaric analogue states have been extracted for the A = 79, Zr-79/Y-79 mirror pair following their population via nucleon-knockout reactions from intermediate-energy rare-isotope beams. These are the heaviest nuclei where such measurements have been made to date. The deduced mirror energy differences (MED) are compared with predictions from a new density-functional based approach, incorporating isospin-breaking effects of both Coulomb and nuclear charge-symmetry breaking and configuration mixing., QC 20210301

A more detailed test of the implementation of nuclear forces that drive shell evolution in the pivotal nucleus ^{42}Si-going beyond earlier comparisons of excited-state energies-is important. The two leading shell-model effective interactions, SDPF-MU and SDPF-U-Si, both of which reproduce the low-lying ^{42}Si(2_{1}^{+}) energy, but whose predictions for other observables differ significantly, are interrogated by the population of states in neutron-rich ^{42}Si with a one-proton removal reaction from ^{43}P projectiles at 81 MeV/nucleon. The measured cross sections to the individual ^{42}Si final states are compared to calculations that combine eikonal reaction dynamics with these shell-model nuclear structure overlaps. The differences in the two shell-model descriptions are examined and linked to predicted low-lying excited 0^{+} states and shape coexistence. Based on the present data, which are in better agreement with the SDPF-MU calculations, the state observed at 2150(13) keV in ^{42}Si is proposed to be the (0_{2}^{+}) level.

In the late stages of stellar core-collapse, prior to core bounce, electron captures on medium-heavy nuclei drive deleptonization and simulations require the use of accurate reaction rates. Nuclei with neutron number near $N=50$, just above atomic number $Z=28$, play an important role, but rates used in astrophysical simulations rely primarily on a relatively simple single-state approximation. In order to improve the accuracy of astrophysical simulations, experimental data are needed to test the electron-capture rates and to guide the development of better theoretical models. This work presents the results of the $^{86}$Kr($t$,$^{3}$He+$\gamma$) experiment at the NSCL, from which an upper limit for the Gamow-Teller strength up to an excitation energy in $^{86}$Br of 5 MeV is extracted. The derived upper limit for the electron-capture rate on $^{86}$Kr indicates that the rate estimated through the single-state approximation is too high and that rates based on Gamow-Teller strengths estimated in shell-model and QRPA calculations are more accurate. The QRPA calculations tested in this manner were used for estimating the electron capture rates for 78 isotopes near $N=50$ and above $Z=28$. The impact of using these new electron-capture rates in simulations of supernovae instead of the rates based on the single-state approximation is investigated, indicating a significant reduction in the deleptonization that affects multi-messenger signals, such as the emission of neutrinos and gravitational waves., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

Angle-integrated cross-section measurements of the $^{56}$Ni(d,n) and (d,p) stripping reactions have been performed to determine the single-particle strengths of low-lying excited states in the mirror nuclei pair $^{57}$Cu-$^{57}$Ni situated adjacent to the doubly magic nucleus $^{56}$Ni. The reactions were studied in inverse kinematics utilizing a beam of radioactive $^{56}$Ni ions in conjunction with the GRETINA $\gamma$-array. Spectroscopic factors are compared with new shell-model calculations using a full $pf$ model space with the GPFX1A Hamiltonian for the isospin-conserving strong interaction plus Coulomb and charge-dependent Hamiltonians. These results were used to set new constraints on the $^{56}$Ni(p,$\gamma$)$^{57}$Cu reaction rate for explosive burning conditions in x-ray bursts, where $^{56}$Ni represents a key waiting point in the astrophysical rp-process., Comment: Final version accepted and published. 5 pages, 2 figures

The Gamow-Teller strength distribution from ${}^{88}$Sr was extracted from a $(t,{}^{3}\text{He}+\gamma)$ experiment at 115 MeV/$u$ to constrain estimates for the electron-capture rates on nuclei around $N=50$, between and including $^{78}$Ni and $^{88}$Sr, which are important for the late evolution of core-collapse supernovae. The observed strength below an excitation energy of 8 MeV was consistent with zero and below 10 MeV amounted to $0.1\pm0.05$. Except for a very-weak transition that could come from the 2.231-MeV $1^{+}$ state, no $\gamma$ lines that could be associated with the decay of known $1^{+}$ states were identified. The derived electron-capture rate from the measured strength distribution is more than an order of magnitude smaller than rates based on the single-state approximation presently used in astrophysical simulations for most nuclei near $N=50$. Rates based on shell-model and quasiparticle random-phase approximation calculations that account for Pauli blocking and core-polarization effects provide better estimates than the single-state approximation, although a relatively strong transition to the first $1^{+}$ state in $^{88}$Rb is not observed in the data. Pauli unblocking effects due to high stellar temperatures could partially counter the low electron-capture rates. The new data serves as a zero-temperature benchmark for constraining models used to estimate such effects.

The $^{23}$Al($p,\gamma$)$^{24}$Si reaction is among the most important reactions driving the energy generation in Type-I X-ray bursts. However, the present reaction-rate uncertainty limits constraints on neutron star properties that can be achieved with burst model-observation comparisons. Here, we present a novel technique for constraining this important reaction by combining the GRETINA array with the neutron detector LENDA coupled to the S800 spectrograph at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The $^{23}$Al($d,n$) reaction was used to populate the astrophysically important states in $^{24}$Si. This enables a measurement in complete kinematics for extracting all relevant inputs necessary to calculate the reaction rate. For the first time, a predicted close-lying doublet of a 2$_2^+$ and (4$_1^+$,0$_2^+$) state in $^{24}$Si was disentangled, finally resolving conflicting results from two previous measurements. Moreover, it was possible to extract spectroscopic factors using GRETINA and LENDA simultaneously. This new technique may be used to constrain other important reaction rates for various astrophysical scenarios.

The development of advanced gamma-ray tracking arrays allows for a sensitive new technique to investigate elusive states of exotic nuclei with fast rare-isotope beams. By taking advantage of the excellent energy and position resolution of the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking In-beam Nuclear Array, we developed a novel technique to identify in-flight isomeric decays of the 0(2)(+) state in Mg-32 populated in a two-proton removal reaction. We confirm the 0(2)(+) -> 2(1)(+) gamma-ray transition of Mg-32 and constrain the 0(2)(+) decay lifetime, suggesting a large collectivity. The small partial cross section populating the 0(2)(+) state in this reaction provides experimental evidence for the reduced occupancy of the normal configuration of the 0(2)(+) state, indicating the intruder dominance of this state.
