One of the fundamental challenges for a hyperspectral imaging system is the detection and discrimination of subpixel objects in background clutter. The background surrounding the object, which acts as interference, provides the major obstacle to successful detection and discrimination. In many applications we look for a single signature and discrimination among different signatures is not required. However, there are important applications where we are interested for multiple signatures. In these cases, the use of spectral discrimination algorithms is both necessary and valuable. In this paper, we develop an approach to spectral discrimination based on the adaptive cosine estimation (ACE) algorithm. The basic idea is to jointly exploit the detection statistics from the various signatures and set a common threshold that ensures larger separation between signatures of interest and background. The operation of the proposed detection-discrimination approach is illustrated using real-world hyperspectral imaging data., The original document contains color images.

Most detection algorithms for hyperspectral imaging applications assume a targetwith a perfectly known spectral signature. In practice, the target signature is either imperfectly measured (target mismatch) and/or it exhibits spectral variability. The objective of this paper is to introduce a robust matched lter that takes the uncertainty and/or variability of target signatures into account. It is shown that, if we describe this uncertainty with an ellipsoid in the spectral space, we can design a matched lter that provides a response of the same magnitude for all spectra within this ellipsoid. Thus, by changing the size of this ellipsoid, we can control the "spectral selectivity" of the matched lter. The ability of the robust matched lter to deal effectively with target mismatch and spectral variability is demonstrated with hyperspectral imaging data from the HYDICE sensor., See also ADM002013. The Pulse Reactor consists of three properly shaped tubes: a valveless combustor, and two short jet thrust augmenters, plus a spark for starting ignition only, a starting air blast tube and a simple low-pressure fuel system. The engine has no moving parts, however, it is competitive in static or hovering performance with turbojet engines, having a thrust specific fuel consumption at this early stage of development of better than 1.0 pound of fuel per hour per pound of thrust. The effect of the intermittent jet thrust augmenters is to more than double the thrust of the intermittent jets that issue from both ends of the resonant combustor. This thrust augmentation, which is much greater than can be achieved with steady flow ejector type augmenters, is accomplished with devices that are relatively quite small. The effect of the thrust augmenter is to reduce the jet velocity at a distance of 7 jet outlet diameters downstream of the jet outlet to only about 190 feet per second and the temperature to about 200 deg F. The Pulse Reactor is quite insensitive to climatic and other environmental hazards. It has no problem from ingestion of foreign particles. The basic simplicity of the engine permits low cost development, production, and maintenance. Furthermore, it is practicable to build the engine in a wide variety of shapes to fit the requirements of aircraft design.

The Pulse Reactor Engine Program is aimed at developing efficient, high performance lift-propulsion systems that have no moving parts. The Pulse Reactor engine is unique in that it rejects foreign particles that are denser than air; therefore, it can operate in the interface between ground and air that is denied to other aircraft lift-propulsion systems. In particular, development has been concerned with the performance effects of (1) engine size, (2) new shapes, (3) forward flight and vertical flight performance, (4) engine controls and accessories, (5) pulse reactor materials, construction techniques and engine durability.

Eleven sizes and configurations of miniature valveless pulsejets were built and tested to determine performance and operational characteristics and to support this report on the general state of the art. When combined with ejector type intermittent jet thrust augmenters, the best performance was achieved with the HH-Ml pulsejet with augmenters, which produced 17 lb thrust with a Tsfc of 1.8 and a thrust augmentation ratio of 1.9. Thrust-to-combustor volume ratio for this basic pulsejet was 140 lb/cubic foot. With augmenters and enclosing shroud, the complete engine package would produce 20 lb/cubic foot. Thrust-to- weight ratios approached 12 to 1. Advantages of simplicity, low cost, and high combustion efficiency and heat transfer rates due to unsteady flow, make these engines well suited for heater-blower applications as well as having some potential for thrust applications.
