RESUMEN Introducción: La Enfermedad de Alzheimer (EA), es una patología neurodegenerativa progresiva que afecta la memoria y otras funciones cognitivas. Hasta ahora no existen tratamientos curativos ni modificadores de la enfermedad, por lo que el manejo está centrado en la prevención y en el tratamiento de factores que puedan contribuir a su evolución; las herramientas farmacológicas son escasas y tienen efectos modestos en la ralentización de la enfermedad. Se propone realizar una breve biografía de Oskar Fischer, describir el conflicto con Alois Alzheimer que se identifica en documentos científicos y mencionar los principales elementos de la teoría de Oskar Fischer. Método: Se realizó una revisión narrativa en las bases de datos Scielo, PubMed y Lilacs, con los términos "Oskar Fischer" y se encontró quince artículos publicados entre 1906 a 2023, los cuales fueron resumidos por los autores GS y NR. El artículo fue posteriormente revisado por los demás autores. Resultados: Se organizaron en secciones, partiendo con una breve biografía del autor, su interacción con Alois Alzheimer y un resumen de su teoría; lo descrito por Oskar Fischer en términos de las estructuras de placas y ovillos se considera como una de las principales teorías fisiopatológicas de la EA. Conclusiones: Oskar Fisher hizo un aporte invaluable y planteó conceptos clásicos con respecto a la EA, que, si bien no le valieron para ser reconocido en la posteridad, han permitido que en las investigaciones posteriores sea de gran importancia repensar estos conceptos e incluir otras posibilidades e hipótesis, para continuar en la profundización del conocimiento de la enfermedad.

Objective: to assess whether the punctual dose prescription technique, point A, is adequate for dose estimation in CTV-HR using 3D gynecological brachytherapy. Methods: treatment plans were collected for 35 patients with stage IB2-IVA (140 fractions or treatment plans) cervical cancer treated between 2019 and 2021, whose prescribed dose was 28Gy in 4 fractions. Points A were reconstructed, the prescribed dose was normalized to 100% isodose to compare with the doses in CTV- HR(D90%). Results: the average dose absorbed at CTV-HR(D90%) was 88.82 ±2.53 Gy and when normalizing the isodose of 100% at point A, average dose at CTV-HR(D90%) was obtained. of 99.3±5.85Gy. This average dose variation to the CTV-HR(D90%) represented an increase of 18%, resulting in 80% of the treatments corresponding to 28 patients falling outside the acceptable variation of the EMBRACE II protocol and only 20% of the treatments corresponding to 7 patients are within the range of the acceptable variation of the protocol in question. Conclusions: the dose prescription technique at point A clinically translates into an overdose of tumor and healthy tissue (rectum, sigmoid, bladder and intestine)., Objetivos: se evaluó si la técnica de prescripción de dosis puntual, punto “A”, es adecuada para la estimación de dosis en el volumen de tratamiento clínico por alta tasa de dosis (CTV-HR), usando la braquiterapia ginecológica 3D. Métodos: se recopiló planes de tratamiento para 35 pacientes con cáncer cervicouterino estadio IB2-IVA (140 fracciones o planes de tratamiento) tratados entre los años 2019 al 2021, cuya dosis prescrita fue de 28 Gy en 4 fracciones. Se reconstruyeron los puntos “A”, se normalizó la dosis prescrita a la isodosis del 100% para comparar con las dosis en CTV-HR (D90%). Resultados: el promedio de la dosis absorbida al CTV- HR (D90%) fue de 88,82 ± 2,53 Gy y al normalizar la isodosis del 100% al punto “A”, se obtuvo dosis promedio en CTV-HR (D90%) de 99,3±5,85Gy. Esta variación de dosis promedio al CTV-HR (D90%) representó un incremento del 18%, dando como resultado que un 80% de los tratamientos correspondiente a 28 pacientes queden fuera de la variación aceptable del protocolo EMBRACE II y solo un 20% de los tratamientos correspondientes a 7 pacientes se encuentren dentro del rango de la variación aceptable del protocolo en mención.Conclusiones: la técnica de prescripción de dosis al punto “A”, se traduce clínicamente en una sobredosis del tejido tumoral y sano (recto, sigmoide, vejiga e intestino).

The Gulf of Cadiz and the Alboran Sea are characterized by tectonic activity due to oblique convergence at the boundary between the Eurasian and Nubian plates. This activity has favoured a variety of tsunamigenic sources: basically, seismogenic faults and submarine landslides. The main tsunamigenic faults in the Gulf of Cadiz would comprise the thrust systems of Gorringe Ridge, Marquês de Pombal, São Vicente Canyon, and Horseshoe faults with a high susceptibility; meanwhile in the Alboran Sea would be the thrust system of the northern Alboran Ridge with high susceptibility, and the thrust systems of north Xauen and Adra margin, the transpressive segment of Al Idrissi fault, and the Yusuf-Habibas and Averroes faults, with moderate to high susceptibility. The areas with the greatest potential to generate tsunamigenic submarine landslides are in the Gulf of Cadiz, the São Vicente Canyon, Hirondelle Seamount, and Gorringe Ridge; and in the Alboran Sea are the southern and northern flanks of Alboran Ridge. Both sources are likely to generate destructive tsunamis in the Gulf of Cadiz, given its history of bigger earthquakes (>7 Mw) and larger landslides. To fully assess tsunamigenic sources, further work needs to be performed. In the case of seismogenic faults, research focuses on geometry, offsets, timing, paleoearthquakes, and recurrence, and in landslides on early post-failure evolution, age, events, and recurrence. In situ measurements, paleotsunami records, and long-term monitoring, in addition to major modelling developments, will be also necessary.

This paper integrates sedimentary, tectonic and volcanic geological processes inside a model of volcano-tectonic activity in oceanic intraplate domains related to rifted continental margins. The study case, the eastern Canary Basin (NE Atlantic), is one of the few places in the world where giant MDTs and Quaternary volcanic and hydrothermal edifices take place in intraplate domains. In this paper, we analyse how two structural systems (WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW) matching with the oceanic fabric control the location of volcanic systems, seafloor tectonic reliefs and subsequently the distribution of main sedimentary systems. Linear turbidite channels, debris flow lobes and the lateral continuity of structural and volcanic reliefs follow a WNW-ESE trend matching the tracks of the oceanic fracture zones. Furthermore, escarpments, anticline axes and volcanic ridges follow a NNE-SSW trend matching normal faults delimiting blocks of oceanic basement. The morpho-structural analysis of all the above geomorphological features shows evidence of a volcanic and tectonic activity from the middle–upper Miocene to the Lower–Middle Pleistocene spread over the whole of the eastern Canary Basin that reached the western Canary Islands. This reactivation changes the paradigm in the seamount province of Canary Islands reported inactive since Cretaceous. A tecto-sedimentary model is proposed for this period of time that can be applied in other intraplate domains of the world. A tectonic uplift in the study area with a thermal anomaly triggered volcanic and hydrothermal activity and the subsequent flank collapse and emplacement of mass transport deposits on the Western Canary Slope. Furthermore, this uplift reactivated the normal basement faults, both trending WNW-ESE and NNE-SSW, generating folds and faults that control the location of turbidite channels, escarpments, mass transport deposits and volcanic edifices.

Oral mouthwashes decrease the infectivity of several respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2. However, the precise agents with antiviral activity in these oral rinses and their exact mechanism of action remain unknown. Here we show that cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), a quaternary ammonium compound in many oral mouthwashes, reduces SARS-CoV-2 infectivity by inhibiting the viral fusion step with target cells after disrupting the integrity of the viral envelope. We also found that CPC-containing mouth rinses decreased more than a thousand times the infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro, while the corresponding vehicles had no effect. This activity was effective for different SARS-CoV-2 variants, including the B.1.1.7 or Alpha variant originally identified in United Kingdom, and in the presence of sterilized saliva. CPC-containing mouth rinses could therefore represent a cost-effective measure to reduce SARS-CoV-2 infectivity in saliva, aiding to reduce viral transmission from infected individuals regardless of the variants they are infected with.

Phenotypic and genealogy date of Siboney de Cuba cows from 1984 to 2016 calving years was used. The goal of this study was to estimate the parameters and breeding values (VG) of production, reproduction and longevity traits. Besides to construct selection index (IS) using principal componente (CP) analysis. The VG of 6 425 cows were estimated for milk yield up to 305 days (VGL305), lactation length (VGDL), age at first calving (VGEP1), calving gestation interval (VGIPG), lifetime yields (VGLTV) y productive life (VGVP). The heredabilities for L305, DL, EP1, IPG, LTV y VP were of 0.16±0.01, 0.04±0.01, 0.04±0.01, 0.44±0.02, 0.05±0.01 y 0.01±0.01, respectively. The genetic correlation between L305 and DL was of 0.36, between EP1, IPG and LTV of 0.36, -0.42 and -0.36, and the VP with the others traits were low (-0.24 to 0.11). The 70.8 % of the total variance of VG was explained for the CP1-3, doing the highest importance the CP1 (32.4 %). Using CP, it is possible to select animals based on only two scores generated by PC1 and PC2 instead of the six VG. It was concluded that it is possible to construct IS based on CP in Siboney de Cuba bovine. Selection for VGL305 and VGDL with PC1 index could be done separately from selection for VGIPG, VGEP1 and VGLTV using PC2 index, and the VP could be improved independent of the other traits using their VG., Se utilizaron los datos fenotípicos y genealógicos de vacas Siboney de Cuba (5/8 Hostein 3/8 Cebú) con partos de los años 1984 al 2016. El objetivo del estudio fue estimar los parámetros y valores genéticos (VG) de rasgos de producción, reproducción y longevidad, y construir índices de selección (IS) mediante el análisis de componentes principales (CP). Se estimaron los VG de 6 425 vacas para la producción de leche acumulada hasta los 305 días (VGL305), duración de la lactancia (VGDL), edad al primer parto (VGEp1), intervalo parto gestación (VGIPG), leche acumulada por vida (VGLTV) y vida productiva (VGVP). Las h2 para L305, DL, EP1, IPG, LTV y VP fueron de 0.16±0.01, 0.04±0.01, 0.04±0.01, 0.44±0.02, 0.05±0.01 y 0.01±0.01, respectivamente. La correlación genética entre L305 y DL fue de 0.36, entre EP1, IPG y LTV de 0.36, -0.42 y -0.36, y de VP con los otros rasgos fueron bajas (-0.24 a 0.11). El 70.8 % de la varianza total de los VG fue explicada por los CP1-3, siendo el CP1 el de mayor aporte (32.4 %). Los CP permitieron seleccionar por los CP1 y CP2, en lugar de seis VG. Large national programs in the United States and several Asian countries have defined and characterised their marine methane hydrate occurrences in some detail, but European hydrate occurrence has received less attention. The European Union-funded project “Marine gas hydrate – an indigenous resource of natural gas for Europe” (MIGRATE) aimed to determine the European potential inventory of exploitable gas hydrate, to assess current technologies for their production, and to evaluate the associated risks. We present a synthesis of results from a MIGRATE working group that focused on the definition and assessment of hydrate in Europe. Our review includes the western and eastern margins of Greenland, the Barents Sea and onshore and offshore Svalbard, the Atlantic margin of Europe, extending south to the northwestern margin of Morocco, the Mediterranean Sea, the Sea of Marmara, and the western and southern margins of the Black Sea. We have not attempted to cover the high Arctic, the Russian, Ukrainian and Georgian sectors of the Black Sea, or overseas territories of European nations. Following a formalised process, we defined a range of indicators of hydrate presence based on geophysical, geochemical and geological data. Our study was framed by the constraint of the hydrate stability field in European seas. Direct hydrate indicators included sampling of hydrate; the presence of bottom simulating reflectors in seismic reflection profiles; gas seepage into the ocean; and chlorinity anomalies in sediment cores. Indirect indicators included geophysical survey evidence for seismic velocity and/or resistivity anomalies, seismic reflectivity anomalies or subsurface gas escape structures; various seabed features associated with gas escape, and the presence of an underlying conventional petroleum system. A joint study and mapping of the morphological features and architecture of the Galicia margin based on high-resolution multibeam bathymetry data and multichannel seismic profiles, provides new insights of the margin morphostructure. Tectonic processes are the major control of the margin's morphology, where the imprint of the North Atlantic rifting and opening and later subduction of the Bay of Biscay and compressional events are still well preserved. The West Galicia margin, which is up to 350 km wide, is composed from east to the west of inner, transitional and outer sectors. The inner sector shows a graded upper slope strongly dissected by a system of submarine canyons and valleys that flow into the 170 km long and 40–60 km wide NW-SE Valle Inclán Valley. The transitional sector, which is up to 75 km wide, displays a smooth relief dominated by landslides and giant craters. Finally, the outer sector is characterised by several banks, N-S sub-parallel ridges and elongated valleys that project seaward over 200 km (i.e., Galicia Bank, Half-Graben, Deep Galicia margin and Peridotite Ridge domains). The North Galicia margin is characterised by a system of terraces up to 30 km wide, that form a stepped slope followed by an abrupt lower slope affected by large-scale rotational failures. The Galicia margin constitutes an exceptional area within the Atlantic margins for identifying different morphostructure styles that characterised the main stages of the margin's evolution along the Wilson cycle. The Galicia margin hosts the transition between two end-members of continental margin styles: a western hyperextended rifted margin (being the conjugate with the Newfoundland margin during the Late Jurassic) and a northern convergent margin (now fossilised) associated with the partial subduction of the southern sector of the Bay of Biscay underneath the North Iberian margin, which occurred in Paleocene-Eocene times. In Ecuador, many communities depend on untreated surface water as the primary source of drinking water and are contaminated with fecal coliforms and Escherichia coli. The objective of the present study was to find aquatic plants with remove of contaminated water with E. coli and total coliforms. For this purpose, the following species were sampled: Azolla caroliniana Willd., Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Salvinia auriculata, Ceratopteris thalictroides and Lemna sp. (Positive control). The plants were reproduced in vitro and bioassays were performed to verify their ability to remove E. coli. Assays were run by triplicate in 0.5 L of water with fertilizer and an E. coli ATCC25922 reference strain was inoculated. As negative control the bacteria without plants and positive control were inoculated with the plant L. minor. After 7 days, the remaining bacterial load was determined. To analyze E. coli, the technique ISO 9308-1 was used. A percentage of 99% E. coli removal was found for A. caroliniana, E. crassipes, C. thalictroides (L.) Brongn and Lemna minor. And 100% for P. stratiotes and S. auriculata. Subsequent waste water tests were performed in which S. auriculate and A. caroliniana achieved 100% removal of the coliforms and the remaining lower efficiency. The use of these species is proposed for the treatment of wastewaters., El objetivo de la investigación fue encontrar plantas acuáticas con potencial de remover E. coli y coliformes totales de agua contaminada. Para ello, se realizaron muestreos en Río Guayas, Recinto Aguas Frías y Estero Peñafiel, donde se seleccionaron las especies: Azolla caroliniana, Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Salvinia auriculata y Lemna minor (Control positivo). Las plantas se reprodujeron in vitro y se realizaron bioensayos para verificar su capacidad de remover E. coli y coliformes. Los ensayos se realizaron por triplicado en 0,5 L de agua con fertilizante y se inoculó una cepa de referencia E. coli ATCC25922.  Como control negativo se inoculó la bacteria sin plantas y control positivo con la planta Lemna sp. Después de 7 días se determinó la carga bacteriana remanente. Se encontró un porcentaje de eliminación de E. coli de 99% para A. caroliniana, E. crassipes y Lemna sp. y de 100% para P. stratiotes y S. auriculata. Posteriormente, se realizaron ensayos con aguas negras en los cuales S. auriculata y A. caroliniana lograron el 100% de remoción de las coliformes y E. coli el resto de plantas tuvieron niveles menores de eficiencia. The increasing volume of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry data collected along continental margins and adjacent deep seafloor regions is providing further opportunities to study new morphological seafloor features in deep water environments. In this paper, seafloor mounds have been imaged in detail with multibeam echosounders and parametric sub-bottom profilers in the deep central area of the Canary Basin (~350–550 km west off El Hierro Island) between 4800 and 5200 mbsl. These features have circular to elongated shapes with heights of 10 to 250 m, diameters of 2–24 km and with flank slopes of 2–50°. Based on their morphological features and the subsurface structures these mounds have been classified into five different types of mounds that follow a linear correlation between height and slope but not between height and size. The first, second (Subgroup A), and third mound-types show heights lower than 80 m and maximum slopes of 35° with extension ranging from 2 to 400 km2 and correspond to domes formed at the surface created by intrusions located at depth that have not outcropped yet. The second (Subgroup B), fourth, and fifth mound-types show higher heights up to 250 m high, maximum slopes of 47° and sizes between 10 and 20 km2 and are related to the expulsion of hot and hydrothermal fluids and/or volcanics from extrusive deep-seated systems. Based on the constraints on their morphological and structural analyses, we suggest that morphostructural types of mounds are intimately linked to a specific origin that leaves its footprint in the morphology of the mounds. We propose a growth model for the five morphostructural types of mounds where different intrusive and extrusive phenomena represent the dominant mechanisms for mound growth evolution. These structures are also affected by tectonics (bulge-like structures clearly deformed by faulting) and mass movements (slide scars and mass transport deposits). Los conceptos de infraestructura e industria de la migración nos permiten concentrar el análisis en el conjunto de instituciones, actores y reglas encargadas de producir y organizar la movilidad migratoria y que simultáneamente ejercen funciones de intermediación, facilitación y control de la migración y los migrantes. Argumentamos que el programa H-2 es una infraestructura burocratizada, es decir, gubernamental, en torno a la cual se ha creado una industria de la migración integrada por agencias de abogados, firmas dedicadas al reclutamiento y contratación, compañías de transporte encargadas de la movilidad de los migrantes, hoteleros y otros prestadores de servicios a los trabajadores. Los actores de esta industria de la migración no sólo interactúan con los trabajadores reclutados sino con una serie de agentes institucionales, tales como representantes de los gobiernos estatales en México, sindicatos de jornaleros y órganos del gobierno estadunidense. Un apéndice de esta industria de la migración es la economía del engaño que defrauda y victimiza a cientos de trabajadores que pagan por tramitar una visa y obtener un trabajo sin recibir nada a cambio. El observatorio para este trabajo es la ciudad de Monterrey, Nuevo León, lugar donde el consulado norteamericano tramita y expide el mayor número de visas H-2 en el mundo. Monterrey alberga una desarrollada industria de la migración que facilita la movilidad de trabajadores temporales de México a Estados Unidos. El trabajo ofrece propuestas de política pública para regular la contratación de los trabajadores y combatir el fraude y los abusos que tienen lugar en México.

Submarine volcanic eruptions are frequent and important events, yet they are rarely observed. Here we relate bathymetric and hydroacoustic images from the 2011 to 2012 El Hierro eruption with surface observations and deposits imaged and sampled by ROV. As a result of the shallow submarine eruption, a new volcano named Tagoro grew from 375 to 89 m depth. The eruption consisted of two main phases of edifice construction intercalated with collapse events. Hydroacoustic images show that the eruptions ranged from explosive to effusive with variable plume types and resulting deposits, even over short time intervals. At the base of the edifice, ROV observations show large accumulations of lava balloons changing in size and type downslope, coinciding with the area where floating lava balloon fallout was observed. Peaks in eruption intensity during explosive phases generated vigorous bubbling at the surface, extensive ash, vesicular lapilli and formed high-density currents, which together with periods of edifice gravitational collapse, produced extensive deep volcaniclastic aprons. Secondary cones developed in the last stages and show evidence for effusive activity with lava ponds and lava flows that cover deposits of stacked lava balloons. Chaotic masses of heterometric boulders around the summit of the principal cone are related to progressive sealing of the vent with decreasing or variable magma supply. Hornitos represent the final eruptive activity with hydrothermal alteration and bacterial mats at the summit. Our study documents the distinct evolution of a submarine volcano and highlights the range of deposit types that may form and be rapidly destroyed in such eruptions.

LAGO is built and operated by the LAGO Collaboration, a non-centralized collaborative union of more than 30 institutions from ten countries. Los ensayos considerados han sido: Pull Off (ensayo a tracción), Shear Torsion (ensayo de torsión), Lap Shear (ensayo de cortadura) y Lap Peeling (ensayo de pelado). La fabricación de las probetas se ha llevado a cabo siguiendo tres procedimientos: por apilado e impregnación manual del material compuesto sobre el hormigón, mediante pegado de laminados de material compuesto prefabricados y mediante impregnación insitu del material compuesto sobre el hormigón a través de técnicas de infusión de resina líquida. Además, dichos ensayos se han realizado sobre probetas de hormigón con dos tratamientos superficiales: amoladora y lija de grano grueso. Tras la realización de los ensayos se ha constatado que predomina la rotura por el hormigón sobre roturas adhesivas o cohesivas, lo que indica una buena adhesión entre éste y el material compuesto, para todos los métodos de fabricación de la unión y tratamientos superficiales del hormigón

La fabricación de las probetas se ha llevado a cabo siguiendo tres procedimientos: por apilado e impregnación manual del material compuesto sobre el hormigón, mediante pegado de laminados de material compuesto prefabricados y mediante impregnación insitu del material compuesto sobre el hormigón a través de técnicas de infusión de resina líquida. Además, dichos ensayos se han realizado sobre probetas de hormigón con dos tratamientos superficiales: amoladora y lija de grano grueso. Tras la realización de los ensayos se ha constatado que predomina la rotura por el hormigón sobre roturas adhesivas o cohesivas, lo que indica una buena adhesión entre éste y el material compuesto, para todos los métodos de fabricación de la unión y tratamientos superficiales del hormigón

El presente trabajo se centra en el análisis de diferentes ensayos que permiten determinar la calidad de la unión entre laminados de material compuesto y hormigón. Los ensayos considerados han sido: Pull Off (ensayo a tracción), Shear Torsion (ensayo de torsión), Lap Shear (ensayo de cortadura) y Lap Peeling (ensayo de pelado).
