An accurate quantitative relationship between key characteristics of an insect population, such as season-long and peak abundances, can be very useful in pest management programs. To the best of our knowledge, no such relationship has yet been established. Here we establish a predictive linear relationship between insect catch Mpw during the week of peak abundance, the length of seasonal flight period, F (number of weeks) and season-long cumulative catch (abundance) A = 0.41MpwF. The derivation of the equation is based on several general assumptions and does not involve fitting to experimental data, which implies generality of the result. A quantitative criterion for the validity of the model is presented. The equation was tested using extensive data collected on captures of male gypsy moths Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) in pheromone-baited traps during 15 years. The model was also tested using trap catch data for two species of mosquitoes, Culex pipiens (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae), in Gravid and BG-sentinel mosquito traps, respectively. The simple, parameter-free equation approximates experimental data points with relative error of 13% and R2 = 0.997, across all of the species tested. For gypsy moth, we also related season-long and weekly trap catches to the daily trap catches during peak flight. We describe several usage scenarios, in which the derived relationships are employed to help link results of small-scale field studies to the operational pest management programs.

Larvae of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar L. (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), a generalist species, frequently encounter spatial and temporal variations in diet quality. Such variation favoured the evolution of high behavioural and physiological plasticity which, depending on forest stand composition, enables more or less successful exploitation of the environment. Even in mixed oak stands, a suitable habitat, interspecific and intraspecific host quality variation may provoke significant variation in gypsy moth performance and, consequently, defoliation severity. To elucidate the insufficiently explored relationship between gypsy moth and oaks (Fagaceae), we carried out reciprocal switches between Turkey oaks (Quercus cerris L.) and less nutritious Hungarian oaks (Quercus frainetto Ten.) (TH and HT groups), under controlled laboratory conditions, and compared larval performance between the switched larvae and larvae continuously fed on either Turkey oak (TT) or Hungarian oak (HH). We found that larval traits were most strongly affected by among-tree variation in oak quality and identity of the host consumed during the fourth instar. Switching from Turkey to Hungarian oak (TH) led to a longer period of feeding, decrease of mass gain, growth, and consumption rate, lower efficiency of food use and nutrient conversion, and increase of protease and amylase activities. Larvae exposed to the reverse switch (HT) attained values of these traits characteristic for TT larvae. It appeared that the lower growth in the TH group than in the TT group was caused by both behavioural (consumption, pre-ingestive) and metabolic (post-digestive) effects from consuming oaks. Multivariate analyses of growth, consumption, and efficiency of food use revealed that early diet experience influenced the sensitivity of themost examined traits to less suitableHungarian oaks, suggesting the development of behavioural and physiological adjustments. Het is een onopvallende vlinder met een onbeholpen vlucht, die verblijft in de oevervegetatie van kalkrijke moerassen met galigaan. De moerasspinner heeft in Europa een verbrokkeld verspreidingsgebied, met de dichtstbijzijnde vindplaatsen vanuit Zuid-Nederland op honderden kilometers afstand. Vanaf 1967 is de vlinder regelmatig waargenomen in het zuidoosten van Noord-Brabant en Midden-Limburg maar daar is nooit veel ruchtbaarheid aan gegeven. Er zijn momenteel vijf vindplaatsen bekend en één in het aangrenzende België. Alle gebieden vallen onder de Habitatrichtlijn en dat geeft hoop op het behoud van de populaties.

De macronachtvlinders van Nederland worden in 19 families onderverdeeld waarvan de uilen (Noctuidae) met ruim 350 en de spanners (Geometridae) met ongeveer 300 soorten verreweg de grootste zijn. In dit artikel wordt een overzicht gegeven van de meest opmerkelijke waarnemingen gedurende de periode 2000 tot en met 2007. Deze waarnemingen betreffen 37 soorten behorende tot acht families, met daaronder tien soorten trekvlinders. Los cromosomas de diversas especies de lepidópteros limántridos han sido estudiados por Seiler (1914), Cretschmar (1928), Beliajeff (1930), Goldschmidt (1934) y Saitoh (1959). A este último autor se debe el estudio citogenético de tres especies de Euproctis —flava Brem, pseudoconspersa Strand y similis Fuessl.— y de Leucoma salicis L. utilizando material originario de Japón. En el presente trabajo se dan a conocer los resultados del análisis citogenético de ejemplares españoles de Orgyia trigotephras Boisd., Leucoma salicis L., Lymantria dispar L. y Euproctis chrysorrhoea L., la primera y la última no estudiadas citológicamente hasta ahora. Al mismo tiempo se consignan unos breves datos biogeográficos y biológicos sobre dichas especies. Para el estudio de los cromosomas se ha empleado la técnica descrita en trabajos anteriores (véase Ortiz y Templado, 1971).

Desde la descripción de splendida por Rambur (29), las opiniones de los autores acerca de si se trata de una buena especie o es coespecifica con dubia (Tausch.) han estado muy divididas. El primer criterio lo mantuvieron Rosenhauer (33), Oberthi.ir (26). Zapater (45) (46), Korb (i8) (i9) (45) (46), Powell (26), Rothschild (34) (35) y Zerny (47). Han postulado el segundo Lederer (20), Staudinger (40) (41), Ribbe (3i) (32), Spuler (39), Strand (42), Seitz (37), Weiss (43), Navás (23), Gaede (i4), Bry1( (1), Hörhammer ( 1 7) y 'Nordman (24). Estudiando los trabajos de Chapman se llega a la conclusión de que consideraba a dubict y a splendida ,zomo una sola Orgya, pues aunque en sus opúsculos (2) (4) (6) (7) menciona a la segunda aisladamente, en el (3), y sobre todo en los (8) y (9), indica con claridad que admite una única especie. Fernández, en 1920 (12), consideró a splendida coespecífica con dubia, pero en 1933 ( 13) la mencionó como buena especie. Duponchel (lo), Graslin (15), Navás (22) y Reisser (3o) indicaron Orgya dubia de España, lo que implícitamente significa que consideraban a splendida coespecífica con ella.
