Abstract

LifeTime aims to track, understand and target human cells during the onset and progression of complex diseases and their response to therapy at single-cell resolution. This mission will be implemented through the development and integration of single-cell multi-omics and imaging, artificial intelligence and patient-derived experimental disease models during progression from health to disease. Analysis of such large molecular and clinical datasets will discover molecular mechanisms, create predictive computational models of disease progression, and reveal new drug targets and therapies. Timely detection and interception of disease embedded in an ethical and patient-centered vision will be achieved through interactions across academia, hospitals, patient-associations, health data management systems and industry. Applying this strategy to key medical challenges in cancer, neurological, infectious, chronic inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases at the single-cell level will usher in cell-based interceptive medicine in Europe over the next decade., QC 20201117

3. Modelling the thermal absorption and radio spectra of the binary pulsar B1259-63

Abstract

We present the results of modelling of the radio spectrum evolution and dispersion measure variations of PSR B1259-63, a pulsar in a binary system with Be star LS 2883. We base our model on a hypothesis that the observed variations of the spectrum are caused by thermal free-free absorption occurring in the pulsar surroundings. We reproduce the observed pulsar spectral shapes in order to examine the influence of the stellar wind of LS 2883 and the equatorial disc on the pulsar's radiation. The simulations of the pulsar's radio emission and its consequent free-free absorption give us an insight into the impact of stellar wind and equatorial disc of LS 2883 has on the shapes of PSR B1259-63 radio spectra, providing an evidence for the connection between gigahertz-peaked spectra phenomenon and the close environment of the pulsar. Additionally, we supplement our model with an external absorbing medium, which results in a good agreement between simulated and observational data., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

4. Meterwavelength Single-pulse Polarimetric Emission Survey IV: The Period Dependence of Component Widths of Pulsars

Abstract

The core component width in normal pulsars, with periods ($P$) $>$ 0.1 seconds, measured at the half-power point at 1 GHz has a lower boundary line (LBL) which closely follows the $P^{-0.5}$ scaling relation. This result is of fundamental importance for understanding the emission process and requires extended studies over a wider frequency range. In this paper we have carried out a detailed study of the profile component widths of 123 normal pulsars observed in the Meterwavelength Single-pulse Polarimetric Emission Survey at 333 and 618 MHz. The components in the pulse profile were separated into core and conal classes. We found that at both frequencies the core as well as the conal component widths versus period had a LBL which followed the $P^{-0.5}$ relation with a similar lower boundary. The radio emission in normal pulsars have been observationally shown to arise from a narrow range of heights around a few hundred kilometers above the stellar surface. In the past the $P^{-0.5}$ relation has been considered as evidence for emission arising from last open dipolar magnetic field lines. We show that the $P^{-0.5}$ dependence only holds if the trailing and leading half-power points of the component are associated with the last open field line. Abstract

We present the results of modelling of the radio spectrum evolution and dispersion measure variations of PSR B1259-63, a pulsar in a binary system with Be star LS 2883. We base our model on a hypothesis that the observed variations of the spectrum are caused by thermal free-free absorption occurring in the pulsar surroundings. We reproduce the observed pulsar spectral shapes in order to examine the influence of the stellar wind of LS 2883 and the equatorial disc on the pulsar's radiation. The simulations of the pulsar's radio emission and its consequent free-free absorption give us an insight into the impact of stellar wind and equatorial disc of LS 2883 has on the shapes of PSR B1259-63 radio spectra, providing an evidence for the connection between gigahertz-peaked spectra phenomenon and the close environment of the pulsar. Additionally, we supplement our model with an external absorbing medium, which results in a good agreement between simulated and observational data., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

The core component width in normal pulsars, with periods ($P$) $>$ 0.1 seconds, measured at the half-power point at 1 GHz has a lower boundary line (LBL) which closely follows the $P^{-0.5}$ scaling relation. This result is of fundamental importance for understanding the emission process and requires extended studies over a wider frequency range. In this paper we have carried out a detailed study of the profile component widths of 123 normal pulsars observed in the Meterwavelength Single-pulse Polarimetric Emission Survey at 333 and 618 MHz. The components in the pulse profile were separated into core and conal classes. We found that at both frequencies the core as well as the conal component widths versus period had a LBL which followed the $P^{-0.5}$ relation with a similar lower boundary. The radio emission in normal pulsars have been observationally shown to arise from a narrow range of heights around a few hundred kilometers above the stellar surface. In the past the $P^{-0.5}$ relation has been considered as evidence for emission arising from last open dipolar magnetic field lines. We show that the $P^{-0.5}$ dependence only holds if the trailing and leading half-power points of the component are associated with the last open field line. In such a scenario we do not find any physical motivation which can explain the $P^{-0.5}$ dependence for both core and conal components as evidence for dipolar geometry in normal pulsars. Abstract

The potential for metal recovery from secondary raw materials, with consequent savings in CO2 emissions, is identified and the development of wet and dry process flowsheets discussed for the recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from clinker. Previous studies indicate that dry recovery processes using equipment such as air classifiers have a distinct recovery advantage over wet ones for both ferrous metals, recovering 80% compared with 75% for wet processes, and even more for non-ferrous metals, recovering 68% compared with 41%. Abstract

Increasing soil salinity is a major threat to crop production in many agricultural areas throughout the world. Although sodium chloride (NaCl) is one of the most abundant salts in soils, others viz. sulfate salts may also be present in high concentrations in some soil types. Sulfate salts, e.g. Na2SO4, are still widely under-represented amongst salt stress studies and the mechanism of its toxicity is poorly understood. Exposure of Chinese cabbage to Na2SO4 already reduced growth at levels ≥20 mM, accompanied by an increase in the total sulfur content of both roots and shoots, which in the shoot for a greater part could be ascribed to an accumulation of sulfate. Moreover, there was an increase in the total water-soluble non-protein thiol content (glutathione) in roots and shoots. Enhanced sulfur metabolite levels (sulfate, glutathione) would down-regulate the expression and activity of the sulfate transporters and APS reductase (glutathione). Indeed, Na2SO4 exposure resulted in a down-regulation of the sulfate uptake capacity of the roots at ≥5 mM, whereas the transcript level of the sulfate transporters Sultr1;2 and Sultr4;1 and APS reductase in the roots was reduced at ≥20 mM. Apparently in the shoot this regulatory signal transduction pathway was overruled by the toxic effects of Na2SO4, since in contrast to the roots, the transcript levels of Sultr4;1 and APS reductase were enhanced in the shoot at ≥30 mM and ≥5 mM Na2SO4, respectively.

Abstract

The experimental data concerning growth kinetics of vitamin C (L(+)-ascorbic acid, LAA) crystals in a seeded and cooling batch mass crystallization process realized in a four–compound: L(+)-ascorbic acid–methanol–ethanol–water system are reported. Influences of initial composition of solution and its linear cooling rate on “average, effective” values of crystal linear growth rate were examined. Small divergences between LAA crystal size distributions (CSDs) data from granulometric analysis and Coulter counter were interpreted theoretically and discussed. Linear growth rates of crystals in a batch crystallizer were acquired with a proposed by Nývlt indirect method, based on the analysis of population density n(L) data in a MSMPR (mixed suspension mixed product removal) crystallizer. Size–independent growth (SIG) kinetics was assumed. It can be concluded, that the largest and the most uniform particles of purified, crystalline vitamin C correspond to higher initial concentration of L(+)-ascorbic acid in a solution and lower cooling rate applied.
