In this paper, we investigate continual learning performance metrics used in class incremental learning strategies for continual learning (CL) using some high performing methods. We investigate especially mean task accuracy. First, we show that it lacks of expressiveness through some simple experiments to capture performance. We show that monitoring average tasks performance is over optimistic and can lead to misleading conclusions for future real life industrial uses. Then, we propose first a simple metric, Minimal Incremental Class Accuracy (MICA) which gives a fair and more useful evaluation of different continual learning methods. Moreover, in order to provide a simple way to easily compare different methods performance in continual learning, we derive another single scalar metric that take into account the learning performance variation as well as our newly introduced metric., Comment: 7 pages, Accepted at IJCNN 2023

Item does not contain fulltext, We describe the MalariaGEN Pf7 data resource, the seventh release of Plasmodium falciparum genome variation data from the MalariaGEN network. It comprises over 20,000 samples from 82 partner studies in 33 countries, including several malaria endemic regions that were previously underrepresented. For the first time we include dried blood spot samples that were sequenced after selective whole genome amplification, necessitating new methods to genotype copy number variations. We identify a large number of newly emerging crt mutations in parts of Southeast Asia, and show examples of heterogeneities in patterns of drug resistance within Africa and within the Indian subcontinent. We describe the profile of variations in the C-terminal of the csp gene and relate this to the sequence used in the RTS,S and R21 malaria vaccines. The Ordovician of North and West Africa comprises three main transgressive–regressive sequences understood as ‘second-order’ cycles of 10–15 myr duration. Tide- to wave-dominated shallow-marine clastic successions, preserving incidental bryozoan carbonates to the north, include fluvial deposits over the most proximal southern stretches of the platform. The boundary with Cambrian strata remains unclear but the latter are progressively less represented to the south in the undifferentiated ‘Cambro-Ordovician’. To the north, graptolites, brachiopods and trilobites combined with palynomorphs provide a robust biostratigraphic frame. Maximum flooding intervals occurred in the early to middle Tremadocian, middle Darriwilian and middle to late Katian. Two events interfered with an overall long-term transgressive trend. The ‘intra-Arenig’ (late Floian?) tectonic event highlighted palaeohighs coinciding with Paleoproterozoic basements. Gondwanan drainage basins were reorganized, which had an impact on sediment sourcing and distribution of detrital material (e.g. zircons) feeding the pre-Variscan Europe. The second event is the end-Ordovician glaciation. The domain supported the greatest part of the Hirnantian glaciers and may also have preserved pre-Hirnantian glacial archives. Depuis 2017, certains pays développés privilégient les accords commerciaux bilatéraux au détriment des accords commerciaux régionaux qui suscitent des controverses au sein de l’opinion politique. Cependant, 37 pays africains ont ratifié l’accord de Libre-Échange continental pour l’Afrique (ZLECAF) depuis 2019. Deux ans après sa mise en œuvre, notre mémoire s’inspire du modèle d’Armington développé par Costinot et Rodriguez-Clare (2014) pour évaluer son impact sur le volume des échanges intra-africain et sur le bien-être. Les résultats révèlent d'importants gains de bien-être à la suite de la mise en œuvre de la ZLECAF. Toutefois, il existe des variations considérables des gains de bien-être entre les CER et entre les pays. Ces gains de bien-être dépendent du niveau d’intégration des CER ou des pays. Our results also show that the countries of the Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD) benefit most from this regional trade agreement.

BACKGROUND: Although malaria transmission has experienced an overall decline in sub-Saharan Africa, urban malaria is now considered an emerging health issue due to rapid and uncontrolled urbanization and the adaptation of vectors to urban environments. Fine-scale hazard and exposure maps are required to support evidence-based policies and targeted interventions, but data-driven predictive spatial modelling is hindered by gaps in epidemiological and entomological data. A knowledge-based geospatial framework is proposed for mapping the heterogeneity of urban malaria hazard and exposure under data scarcity. It builds on proven geospatial methods, implements open-source algorithms, and relies heavily on vector ecology knowledge and the involvement of local experts. METHODS: A workflow for producing fine-scale maps was systematized, and most processing steps were automated. The method was evaluated through its application to the metropolitan area of Dakar, Senegal, where urban transmission has long been confirmed. Urban malaria exposure was defined as the contact risk between adult Anopheles vectors (the hazard) and urban population and accounted for socioeconomic vulnerability by including the dimension of urban deprivation that is reflected in the morphology of the built-up fabric. Larval habitat suitability was mapped through a deductive geospatial approach involving the participation of experts with a strong background in vector ecology and validated with existing geolocated entomological data. Adult vector habitat suitability was derived through a similar process, based on dispersal from suitable breeding site locations. The resulting hazard map was combined with a population density map to generate a gridded urban malaria exposure map at a spatial resolution of 100 m. This article explores the consequences of the so-called ‘childcare-benefit scandal’ that has taken place in the Netherlands where approximately 26.000 parents have been wrongfully accused of fraud by the Dutch tax-authorities, largely as a result of discriminative algorithms and tight policies and attitudes towards welfare benefits. The parents affected were accused of fraud for more than a decade, going through a profound disempowerment, silencing and humiliation. Our research explored the consequences of the ‘childcare-benefit scandal’ with narrative interviews with wrongfully accused mothers by centring their stories and voices. The main consequences that transpired from the interviews have been organised in five themes: 1) consequences on their wellbeing (mental, emotional, physical and material), 2) consequences on their children’s wellbeing, 3) impact on their relationships with others, 4) impact on their attitudes towards state institutions, and 5) impact on their hopes and needs for the future.

Cultivated peanut or groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a grain legume grown in many developing countries by smallholder farmers for food, feed, and/or income. The speciation of the cultivated species, that involved polyploidization followed by domestication, greatly reduced its variability at the DNA level. Mobilizing peanut diversity is a prerequisite for any breeding program for overcoming the main constraints that plague production and for increasing yield in farmer fields. In this study, the Groundnut Improvement Network for Africa assembled a collection of 1,049 peanut breeding lines, varieties, and landraces from 9 countries in Africa. The collection was genotyped with the Axiom_Arachis2 48K SNP array and 8,229 polymorphic single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were used to analyze the genetic structure of this collection and quantify the level of genetic diversity in each breeding program. A supervised model was developed using dapc to unambiguously assign 542, 35, and 172 genotypes to the Spanish, Valencia, and Virginia market types, respectively. Distance-based clustering of the collection showed a clear grouping structure according to subspecies and market types, with 73% of the genotypes classified as fastigiata and 27% as hypogaea subspecies. Using STRUCTURE, the global structuration was confirmed and showed that, at a minimum membership of 0.8, 76% of the varieties that were not assigned by dapc were actually admixed. This was particularly the case of most of the genotype of the Valencia subgroup that exhibited admixed genetic heritage. The results also showed that the geographic origin (i.e. East, Southern, and West Africa) did not strongly explain the genetic structure. The gene diversity managed by each breeding program, measured by the expected heterozygosity, ranged from 0.25 to 0.39, with the Niger breeding program having the lowest diversity mainly because only lines that belong to the fastigiata subspecies are used in this program. The Ordovician of North and West Africa comprises three main transgressive–regressive sequences understood as ‘second-order’ cycles of 10–15 myr duration. Tide- to wave-dominated shallow-marine clastic successions, preserving incidental bryozoan carbonates to the north, include fluvial deposits over the most proximal southern stretches of the platform. The boundary with Cambrian strata remains unclear but the latter are progressively less represented to the south in the undifferentiated ‘Cambro-Ordovician’. To the north, graptolites, brachiopods and trilobites combined with palynomorphs provide a robust biostratigraphic frame. Maximum flooding intervals occurred in the early to middle Tremadocian, middle Darriwilian and middle to late Katian. Two events interfered with an overall long-term transgressive trend. The ‘intra-Arenig’ (late Floian?) tectonic event highlighted palaeohighs coinciding with Paleoproterozoic basements. Gondwanan drainage basins were reorganized, which had an impact on sediment sourcing and distribution of detrital material (e.g. zircons) feeding the pre-Variscan Europe. The second event is the end-Ordovician glaciation. The domain supported the greatest part of the Hirnantian glaciers and may also have preserved pre-Hirnantian glacial archives. It is not until the very latest Ordovician that offshore conditions developed far inland; it is however suspected that this inundation benefited from a transient postglacial isostatic flexure.

Obtaining accurate values of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) is very important for managing all natural or artificial processes involving water flow into soils. Double-ring infiltration (DRI) is one of the easiest-to-work-with techniques commonly used for Ksat determination. Unfortunately, when improperly used, it leads to important variations and inaccurate results. This study was designed to investigate the necessary conditions to reach the true-value or real-world saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat-real-world) in the field. For this purpose, the effects of two factors—namely, the measured infiltration data type (cumulative, instant rate, and average rate) and the related non-linear regression equation type—were analyzed. Measurements with DRI were performed with samples from 106 locations in three West African countries, namely, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Cote d’Ivoire. The soils were composed of loam, sandy loam, and sandy clay loam. The results show that when infiltration rates are used rather than cumulative infiltration non-linear regression curves, the variability between the measured Ksat and the real-world saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat-real-world) could reach from 2.2% to 58.8%. This variability was caused by the approximate amplification—according to the procedure used—of time-increment measurement errors. Extending the test duration to more than 4 h, especially when clay soils were involved, and using the exponential one-phase decay non-linear regression of the cumulative infiltration data based on a clear measurement protocol provided the Ksat values that were closest to Ksat-real-world.

Background: Tuberculosis diagnosis might be delayed or missed in children with severe pneumonia because this diagnosis is usually only considered in cases of prolonged symptoms or antibiotic failure. Systematic tuberculosis detection at hospital admission could increase case detection and reduce mortality. Methods: We did a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial in 16 hospitals from six countries (Cambodia, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Mozambique, Uganda, and Zambia) with high incidence of tuberculosis. Children younger than 5 years with WHO-defined severe pneumonia received either the standard of care (control group) or standard of care plus Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert Ultra; Cepheid, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) on nasopharyngeal aspirate and stool samples (intervention group). Clusters (hospitals) were progressively switched from control to intervention at 5-week intervals, using a computer-generated random sequence, stratified on incidence rate of tuberculosis at country level, and masked to teams until 5 weeks before switch. We assessed the effect of the intervention on primary (12-week all-cause mortality) and secondary (including tuberculosis diagnosis) outcomes, using generalised linear mixed models. The primary analysis was by intention to treat. We described outcomes in children with severe acute malnutrition in a post hoc analysis. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03831906) and the Pan African Clinical Trial Registry (PACTR202101615120643). Findings: From March 21, 2019, to March 30, 2021, we enrolled 1401 children in the control group and 1169 children in the intervention group. In the intervention group, 1140 (97·5%) children had nasopharyngeal aspirates and 942 (80·6%) had their stool collected; 24 (2·1%) had positive Xpert Ultra. At 12 weeks, 110 (7·9%) children in the control group and 91 (7·8%) children in the intervention group had died (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 0·986, 95% CI 0·597–1·630, p=0·957), and 74 (5·3%) children in the control group

This article highlights over a decade of signature achievements by the West Africa International Centers for Excellence in Malaria Research (WA-ICEMR) and its partners toward guiding malaria prevention and control strategies. Since 2010, the WA-ICEMR has performed longitudinal studies to monitor and assess malaria control interventions with respect to space-time patterns, vector transmission indicators, and drug resistance markers. These activities were facilitated and supported by the Mali National Malaria Control Program. Research activities included large-scale active and passive surveillance and expanded coverage of universal long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets and seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC). The findings revealed substantial declines in malaria occurrence after the scale-up of control interventions in WA-ICEMR study sites. WA-ICEMR studies showed that SMC using sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine plus amodiaquine was highly effective in preventing malaria among children under 5 years of age. An alternative SMC regimen (dihydroartemisinin plus piperaquine) was shown to be potentially more effective and provided advantages for acceptability and compliance over the standard SMC regimen. Other findings discussed in this article include higher observed multiplicity of infection rates for malaria in historically high-endemic areas, continued antimalarial drug sensitivity to Plasmodium falciparum, high outdoor malaria transmission rates, and increased insecticide resistance over the past decade. The progress achieved by the WA-ICEMR and its partners highlights the critical need for maintaining current malaria control interventions while developing novel strategies to disrupt malaria transmission. Enhanced evaluation of these strategies through research partnerships is particularly needed in the wake of reported artemisinin resistance in Southeast Asia and East Africa.

The West Africa International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research (WA-ICEMR) is a multidisciplinary research program that works closely with the NMCP and its partners to address critical research needs for malaria control. This coordinated effort includes assessing the effectiveness of control interventions based on key malaria research topics, including immune status, parasite genetic diversity, insecticide and drug resistance, diagnostic accuracy, malaria vector populations and biting behaviors, and vectorial capacity. Several signature accomplishments of the WA-ICEMR include identifying changing malaria age demographic profiles, testing innovative approaches to improve control strategies, and providing regular reporting on drug and insecticide resistance status. The NMCP and WA-ICEMR partnership between the WA-ICEMR and the NMCP offers a comprehensive research platform that informs the design and implementation of malaria prevention and control research programs. These efforts build local expertise and capacity for the next generation of malaria researchers and guide local policy, which is crucial in sustaining efforts toward eliminating malaria in West Africa.

Entomological collections were performed to examine the intensity of transmission based on pyrethroid spray catches, human landing catches and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing for circumsporozoite antigen.RESULTS: A total of 1401 participants of all ages were enrolled in the study in 2012 after random sampling of households from the community census list. Prevalence of infection was extremely high in Dangassa, varying from 9.5 to 62.8% at the start of the rainy season and from 15.1 to 66.7% at the end of the rainy season. Likewise, the number of vectors per house, biting rates, sporozoites rates, and entomological inoculation rates (EIRs) were substantially greater in Dangassa.DISCUSSION: The findings for this study are consistent with the progressive implementation of effective malaria control strategies in Dangassa. Termites are essential components of tropical ecosystems, in which they provide fundamental ecosystem services, such as decomposition of dead plant material, fostering of soil mineralization and provisioning of new microhabitats. We investigated the termite communities of four habitats in two protected areas in West Africa, which differ in management effectiveness: the strictly protected Lamto Reserve (LR) and the Marahoué National Park (MNP), which suffers from anthropogenic disturbance despite its protection status. We tested the effect of disturbance on species composition, richness and abundance as well as on functional (feeding type) composition. The effect of disturbance was clearly visible in the termite communities. Compared to the LR, the MNP had less termite species overall and in all habitats except the shrub savannah. Also the abundance of termites was generally reduced and a decrease of soil feeders recorded. The latter is well-known to be sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance in forests. Comparing our results with other studies, we were able to identify suitable bioindicators of ecosystem health for West-African savannahs. Here we describe a new release of curated genome variation data on 7,000 Plasmodium falciparum samples from MalariaGEN partner studies in 28 malaria-endemic countries. High-quality genotype calls on 3 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and short indels were produced using a standardised analysis pipeline. Copy number variants associated with drug resistance and structural variants that cause failure of rapid diagnostic tests were also analysed. Almost all samples showed genetic evidence of resistance to at least one antimalarial drug, and some samples from Southeast Asia carried markers of resistance to six commonly-used drugs. Genes expressed during the mosquito stage of the parasite life-cycle are prominent among loci that show strong geographic differentiation. By continuing to enlarge this open data resource we aim to facilitate research into the evolutionary processes affecting malaria control and to accelerate development of the surveillance toolkit required for malaria elimination.

"The event Vulnerable Paradoxes took place from May 27 to 30, 2020 as part of OFFTA. What was originally meant to be an in-person series of roundtables was moved online due to COVID-19. We invited thirteen artists, chosen by a selection committee, to speak about performance. We provided questions as a starting point: What qualities of performance are you searching for and why? How do form and content co-exist in your work and how does this relate to the ways in which you create and perform? How does the audience exist in your imagination and how does this compare to actual experiences with spectators? What can performance do that other art forms can’t? Is this connected to how and why you have chosen it? We tried to be clear that these questions were only a starting point. We wanted Vulnerable Paradoxes to be artist-driven and to allow the participants to speak of these matters in any way they chose. We wanted to generate a platform that would perhaps allow such matters to be spoken about in ways other than what we’re most used to." -- page 2.

Like other developing countries, Burkina Faso is one of the preferential destinations for second-hand electricaland electronic equipments (EEE). At the end of their life, these EEEs are classified as waste electrical andelectronic equipment (WEEE) including Printed Circuit Boards (PCB). A particle size reduction is realized for therelease of metals by shredding and grinding to obtain particles smaller 1.5 mm. A granulometric sorting wasrealized and nine granulometric portions were obtained. Particles were characterized by optical microscopy andScanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The experimentsconfirmed that the fractions contained polymers, glass fibers and metals under the form of single metals or alloys.The release of metal was efficient for particles with a size smaller than 0.71 mm. Three digestion procedures wereexperimented on four components to assess the impact on metals leaching. Microwave-assisted digestion methodwas the best procedure, compared to the analysis methods ISO 11466: 1995, and method 3050B, adapted. Thecharacterization by Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) of these PCBs exhibitedimportant amounts of precious metals (Ag, Au, Pd) and other metals in greater quantities (Cu, Pb, Ni, Co, etc.),leading to their qualification as “Urban Mines” calling for their recovery. The characterization of metals in eachgranulometric portion is realized. Malaria infections in pregnancy should be treated promptly with safe and efficacious antimalarial drugs to prevent harmful effects on the mother and fetus. To succeed, the Malian has developed NMCP guidelines for the management of malaria cases in pregnant women. The study aimed at the analysis of the prescription of antimalarial drugs based on the Mali's NMCP guidelines. We conducted a cross-sectional study during malaria transmission season from June to August 2020. The sampling concerned all prescriptions for pregnant women containing at least one antimalarial drug. The frequency of prescription of antimalarial drugs was 85%. 132 (74.16%) were preventive treatments and 46 (25.84%) curative treatments. 30 (90.91%) of pregnant women in the first trimester received one dose of Sulfadoxine-Pyrimethamine. 6 (12.5%) received three doses in the third trimester. Of the 46 antimalarial drugs prescribed for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria, 30 (65.22%) were Artemether-lumefantrine (tablet), 10 (21.74%) were Quinine (tablet). 29 (63.04%) were compliant with NMCP guidelines and 17 (36.96%) were not. The non-compliances concerned 3 prescriptions of Artemether-lumefantrine in the first trimester, 3 and 5 prescriptions of Quinine (tablet) in the second and third trimester respectively and at the end 2 and 4 non-compliances respectively for the prescription of injectable dosage forms of Quinine and Artesunate. This study showed a great noncompliance with the Mali's NMCP guidelines in the prescription of antimalarial in pregnant women. Le Mali contemporain ? Il est bien différent des images que les médias diffusent ! La société malienne a considérablement évolué depuis l'indépendance, les jeunes y sont beaucoup plus nombreux et mieux informés, les femmes plus actives. Mais les changements qui ont marqué notamment la gouvernance et la situation économique paraissent décalés au regard des nouvelles contraintes, attentes et exigences liées à ces mutations. Comment cette société, dans sa diversité, pense-t-elle et s'engage-t-elle dans la modernité ? Voilà le sujet de ce livre. Une cinquantaine de chercheurs en sciences sociales, dans le cadre d'une collaboration franco-malienne, ont travaillé sur le Mali contemporain dans la période qui a immédiatement précédé la crise (2007-2012). Ils se sont principalement intéressés à la vie politique dans les communes et quartiers, à la réalité de la décentralisation, à l'image que l'Etat en action donne de lui, au fait religieux dans ses manifestations et ses tendances lourdes, mais aussi aux divers aspects de la migration, et enfin et surtout à la place des jeunes dans la société. Le tableau qui se dégage de leurs observations est sans complaisance : faire évoluer positivement la situation actuelle de la société malienne est un défi pour les décideurs et l'ensemble de la population ; et pour y parvenir, il est impérieux d'ébranler les pesanteurs, blocages, et faux-fuyants qui ont conduit le pays au bord du gouffre.
