By using the GRAVITY instrument with the near-infrared (NIR) Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI), the structure of the broad (emission-)line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be spatially resolved, allowing the central black hole (BH) mass to be determined. This work reports new NIR VLTI/GRAVITY interferometric spectra for four type 1 AGNs (Mrk 509, PDS 456, Mrk 1239, and IC 4329A) with resolved broad-line emission. Dynamical modelling of interferometric data constrains the BLR radius and central BH mass measurements for our targets and reveals outflow-dominated BLRs for Mrk 509 and PDS 456. We present an updated radius-luminosity (R-L) relation independent of that derived with reverberation mapping (RM) measurements using all the GRAVITY-observed AGNs. We find our R-L relation to be largely consistent with that derived from RM measurements except at high luminosity, where BLR radii seem to be smaller than predicted. This is consistent with RM-based claims that high Eddington ratio AGNs show consistently smaller BLR sizes. The BH masses of our targets are also consistent with the standard $M_\mathrm{BH}$-$\sigma_*$ relation. Model-independent photocentre fitting shows spatial offsets between the hot dust continuum and the BLR photocentres (ranging from $\sim$17 $\mu$as to 140 $\mu$as) that are generally perpendicular to the alignment of the red- and blueshifted BLR photocentres. These offsets are found to be related to the AGN luminosity and could be caused by asymmetric K-band emission of the hot dust, shifting the dust photocentre. We present the ionised gas outflow morphology in the Circinus galaxy using the Narrow Field Mode (NFM) of the MUSE instrument on board the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The NFM observations provide a spatial resolution of $\sim$0.1", corresponding to a physical scale of $\sim$2 pc, one of the highest spatial resolution achievable using ground-based AO-assisted observations in the optical wavelengths. The MUSE observations reveal a collimated clumpy outflow profile originating near the AGN location and extending up to 1.5" ($\sim$30 pc) in the NW direction. The collimated structure then fragments into two filaments, giving the entire outflowing gas a ``tuning-fork'' morphology. These structures remain undetected in the lower spatial resolution MUSE Wide Field Mode data. We explain the origin of this tuning-fork structure to the interaction of the outflow with a dense clump in the interstellar medium (ISM) as the outflow propagates outward. The origin of the collimated structure itself could be from jet-ISM interactions on small scales. These observations also provide evidence to the origin of the ionised gas filaments previously observed in the Circinus galaxy out to kiloparsec scales. We find instantaneous and time-averaged mass outflow rates of 10$^{-2}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and 10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively. Based on the star formation rate in the Circinus galaxy reported in the literature, the observed ionised outflows are not expected to regulate star formation within the $\sim$100 pc scales probed by the NFM data., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We find that the continuum size measured using optical/near-infrared interferometry (OI) is roughly twice that measured by reverberation mapping (RM). Both OI and RM continuum sizes show a tight relation with the H beta BLR size, with only an intrinsic scatter of 0.25 dex. The masses of supermassive black holes (BHs) can hence simply be derived from a dust size in combination with a broad line width and virial factor. Since the primary uncertainty of these BH masses comes from the virial factor, the accuracy of the continuum-based BH masses is close to those based on the RM measurement of the broad emission line. Moreover, the necessary continuum measurements can be obtained on a much shorter timescale than those required monitoring for RM, and they are also more time efficient than those needed to resolve the BLR with OI. The primary goal of this work is to demonstrate a measuring of the BH mass based on the dust-continuum size with our first calibration of the R-BLR-R-d relation. The current limitation and caveats are discussed in detail. Future GRAVITY observations are expected to improve the continuum-based method and have the potential of measuring BH masses for a large sample of AGNs in the low-redshift Universe.

We present multi-wavelength spectral and temporal variability analysis of PKS 0027-426 using optical griz observations from DES (Dark Energy Survey) between 2013-2018 and VOILETTE (VEILS Optical Light curves of Extragalactic TransienT Events) between 2018-2019 and near infrared (NIR) JKs observations from VEILS (VISTAExtragalactic Infrared Legacy Survey) between 2017-2019. Multiple methods of cross-correlation of each combination of light curve provides measurements of possible lags between optical-optical, optical-NIR, and NIR-NIR emission, for each observation season and for the entire observational period. Inter-band time lag measurements consistently suggest either simultaneous emission or delays between emission regions on timescales smaller than the cadences of observations. The colour-magnitude relation between each combination of filters was also studied to determine the spectral behaviour of PKS 0027-426. Our results demonstrate complex colour behaviour that changes between bluer when brighter (BWB), stable when brighter (SWB) and redder when brighter (RWB) trends over different timescales and using different combinations of optical filters. A reverberation mapping (RM) campaign has also recently obtained high quality light curves and measured the linear size of the BLR in a way that is complementary to the GRAVITY measurement. The size and kinematics of the BLR can be better constrained by a joint analysis that combines both GRAVITY and RM data. This, in turn, allows us to obtain the mass of the supermassive black hole in NGC3783 with an accuracy that is about a factor of two better than that inferred from GRAVITY data alone. We derive $M_\mathrm{BH}=2.54_{-0.72}^{+0.90}\times 10^7\,M_\odot$. Finally, and perhaps most notably, we are able to measure a geometric distance to NGC 3783 of $39.9^{+14.5}_{-11.9}$ Mpc. We are able to test the robustness of the BLR-based geometric distance with measurements based on the Tully-Fisher relation and other indirect methods. We find the geometric distance is consistent with other methods within their scatter. We explore the potential of BLR-based geometric distances to directly constrain the Hubble constant, $H_0$, and identify differential phase uncertainties as the current dominant limitation to the $H_0$ measurement precision for individual sources., Comment: 9 pages and 5 figures in main text, Accepted for publication in A&A

Using VLTI/GRAVITY and SINFONI data, we investigate the subparsec gas and dust structure around the nearby type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosted by NGC 3783. The K-band coverage of GRAVITY uniquely allows simultaneous analysis of the size and kinematics of the broad line region (BLR), the size and structure of the near-infrared(near-IR)-continuum-emitting hot dust, and the size of the coronal line region (CLR). We find the BLR, probed through broad Br gamma emission, to be well described by a rotating, thick disc with a radial distribution of clouds peaking in the inner region. In our BLR model, the physical mean radius of 16 light-days is nearly twice the ten-day time-lag that would be measured, which closely matches the ten-day time-lag that has been measured by reverberation mapping. We measure a hot dust full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) size of 0.74 mas (0.14 pc) and further reconstruct an image of the hot dust, which reveals a faint (5% of the total flux) offset cloud that we interpret as an accreting or outflowing cloud heated by the central AGN. Finally, we directly measure the FWHM size of the nuclear CLR as traced by the [Ca VIII] and narrow Br gamma line. We find a FWHM size of 2.2 mas (0.4 pc), fully in line with the expectation of the CLR located between the BLR and narrow line region. Combining all of these measurements together with larger scale near-IR integral field unit and mid-IR interferometry data, we are able to comprehensively map the structure and dynamics of gas and dust from 0.01 to 100 pc.

In this study, we developed a novel forward osmosis (FO) simulation method for a multicomponent system (water, NaCl, and thermoresponsive ethylene oxide-propylene oxide-based copolymer draw solute) targeted for direct seawater desalination using a hollow fiber (HF) membrane module. Box complex method was applied to numerically solve the FO simulation model of a three-component system. A good agreement between experimental and simulation results obtained in various operation conditions allowed us to estimate not only the effect of NaCl and draw solution (DS) concentration on the resulting water permeate flow rate but also the osmotic pressure inside and outside of the HF membranes. From the analysis, the HF modules were designed to decrease the dilution of the draw solution (DS) inside the module due to water permeation. We validated the suggestion by simulation of the increase of the water permeation rate in the modified HF modules, which were designed for the smooth flow of the DS to decrease the DS dilution. The simulation was further verified by reasonable results indicating that the decrease of NaCl concentration in the feed water is also effective in increasing the water permeation rate in the current HF module.

We present results from high signal-to-noise optical spectropolarimetric observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxies NGC783 and Mrk509 in the 3500-7000 A range. We find complex structure in the polarized emission for both objects. In particular, Position Angle (PA) changes across the Balmer lines show a distinctive 'M'-shaped profile that had not been observed in this detail before, but could represent a common trait in Seyfert 1 galaxies. In fact, while this shape is observed in all Balmer lines in NGC3783, Mrk509 transitions into a 'M'-shaped PA profile for higher transitions lines. We have modeled the observed profiles using the STOKES radiative transfer code and assuming that the scattering region is co-spatial with the BLR and outflowing. In our BLR model the physical mean radius of 16 light days is nearly twice the 10 day time lag that would be measured, which matches very well the 10 day time lag that has been measured by reverberation mapping. We measure a hot dust FWHM size of 0.74 mas (0.14 pc) and further reconstruct an image of the hot dust which reveals a faint (5% of the total flux) offset cloud which we interpret as an accreting cloud heated by the central AGN. Finally, we directly measure the FWHM size of the nuclear CLR as traced by the [CaVIII] and narrow Br$\gamma$ line. We find a FWHM size of 2.2 mas (0.4 pc), fully in line with the expectation of the CLR located between the BLR and narrow line region. We present near-infrared interferometric data on the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, obtained with the GRAVITY instrument on the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The extensive baseline coverage from 5 to 60 M lambda allowed us to reconstruct a continuum image of the nucleus with an unrivaled 0.2 pc resolution in the K-band. We find a thin ring-like structure of emission with a radius r=0.24 +/- 0.03 pc, inclination i=70 +/- 5 degrees, position angle PA=-50 +/- 4 degrees, and h/r< 0.14, which we associate with the dust sublimation region. The observed morphology is inconsistent with the expected signatures of a geometrically and optically thick torus. Instead, the infrared emission shows a striking resemblance to the 22 GHz maser disc, which suggests they share a common region of origin. The near-infrared spectral energy distribution indicates a bolometric luminosity of (0.4-4.7) x 10(45) erg s(-1), behind a large A(K)approximate to 5.5 (A(V)approximate to 90) screen of extinction that also appears to contribute significantly to obscuring the broad line region.

We use VLTI/GRAVITY near-infrared interferometry measurements of eight bright type 1 AGN to study the size and structure of hot dust that is heated by the central engine. We partially resolve each source, and report Gaussian full width at half-maximum sizes in the range 0.3-0.8 mas. In all but one object, we find no evidence for significant elongation or asymmetry (closure phases less than or similar to 1 degrees). The narrow range of measured angular sizes is expected given the similar optical flux of our targets, and implies an increasing effective physical radius with bolometric luminosity, as found from previous reverberation and interferometry measurements. The measured sizes for Seyfert galaxies are systematically larger than for the two quasars in our sample when measured relative to the previously reported R similar to L-1/2 relationship, which is explained by emission at the sublimation radius. This could be evidence of an evolving near-infrared emission region structure as a function of central luminosity.

We present new near-infrared VLTI/GRAVITY interferometric spectra that spatially resolve the broad Br gamma emission line in the nucleus of the active galaxy IRAS 09149-6206. We use these data to measure the size of the broad line region (BLR) and estimate the mass of the central black hole. Using an improved phase calibration method that reduces the differential phase uncertainty to 0.05 degrees per baseline across the spectrum, we detect a differential phase signal that reaches a maximum of similar to 0.5 degrees between the line and continuum. This represents an offset of similar to 120 mu as (0.14 pc) between the BLR and the centroid of the hot dust distribution traced by the 2.3 mu m continuum. The offset is well within the dust sublimation region, which matches the measured similar to 0.6 mas (0.7 pc) diameter of the continuum. A clear velocity gradient, almost perpendicular to the offset, is traced by the reconstructed photocentres of the spectral channels of the Br gamma line. We infer the radius of the BLR to be similar to 65 mu as (0.075 pc), which is consistent with the radius-luminosity relation of nearby active galactic nuclei derived based on the time lag of the H beta line from reverberation mapping campaigns. Our dynamical modelling indicates the black hole mass is similar to 1x10(8) M-circle dot, which is a little below, but consistent with, the standard M-BH-sigma (*) relation.

Our dynamical modelling indicates the black hole mass is similar to 1x10(8) M-circle dot, which is a little below, but consistent with, the standard M-BH-sigma (*) relation.

We present new near-infrared VLTI/GRAVITY interferometric spectra that spatially resolve the broad Br$\gamma$ emission line in the nucleus of the active galaxy IRAS 09149-6206. We use these data to measure the size of the broad line region (BLR) and estimate the mass of the central black hole. Using an improved phase calibration method that reduces the differential phase uncertainty to 0.05 degree per baseline across the spectrum, we detect a differential phase signal that reaches a maximum of ~0.5 degree between the line and continuum. This represents an offset of ~120 $\mu$as (0.14 pc) between the BLR and the centroid of the hot dust distribution traced by the 2.3 $\mu$m continuum. The offset is well within the dust sublimation region, which matches the measured ~0.6 mas (0.7 pc) diameter of the continuum. A clear velocity gradient, almost perpendicular to the offset, is traced by the reconstructed photocentres of the spectral channels of the Br$\gamma$ line. We infer the radius of the BLR to be ~65 $\mu$as (0.075 pc), which is consistent with the radius-luminosity relation of nearby active galactic nuclei derived based on the time lag of the H$\beta$ line from reverberation mapping campaigns. Observations of broad emission lines could potentially constrain the mechanism for transporting gas inwards through accretion disks or outwards through winds. In some models the emission lines arise from a continuous outflow, whereas in others they are produced by orbiting gas clouds. Here we report a spatial offset (with a spatial resolution of ten micro-arcseconds or about 0.03 parsecs for a distance of 550 million parsecs) between the red and blue photo-centres of the broad Paschen-{\alpha} line of the quasar 3C 273 perpendicular to the direction of its radio jet. This spatial offset corresponds to a gradient in the velocity of the gas and thus implies that the gas is orbiting the central supermassive black hole. The data are well fitted by a broad-line-region model of a thick disk of gravitationally bound material orbiting a black hole of 300 million solar masses. We infer a disk radius of 150 light days; a radius of 100-400 light days was found previously using reverberation mapping. Since 2004, optical interferometers have produced an increasing number of scientific papers covering various fields of astrophysics. As current interferometric facilities are reaching their maturity, we take the opportunity in this paper to summarize the conclusions of a few key meetings, workshops, and conferences dedicated to interferometry. We present the most persistent recommendations related to science cases and discuss some key technological developments required to address them. We present new calculations of the CAT3D clumpy torus models, which now include a more physical dust sublimation model as well as AGN anisotropic emission. These new models allow graphite grains to persist at temperatures higher than the silicate dust sublimation temperature. This produces stronger near-infrared emission and bluer mid-infrared (MIR) spectral slopes. We make a statistical comparison of the CAT3D model MIR predictions with a compilation of sub-arcsecond resolution ground-based MIR spectroscopy of 52 nearby Seyfert galaxies (median distance of 36 Mpc) and 10 quasars. We focus on the AGN MIR spectral index $\alpha_{MIR}$ and the strength of the 9.7 $\mu$m silicate feature $S_{Sil}$. As with other clumpy torus models, the new CAT3D models do not reproduce the Seyfert galaxies with deep silicate absorption ($S_{Sil}<-1$). Excluding those, we conclude that the new CAT3D models are in better agreement with the observed $\alpha_{MIR}$ and $S_{Sil}$ of Seyfert galaxies and quasars. We find that Seyfert 2 are reproduced with models with low photon escape probabilities, while the quasars and the Seyfert 1-1.5 require generally models with higher photon escape probabilities. Quasars and Seyfert 1-1.5 tend to show steeper radial cloud distributions and fewer clouds along an equatorial line-of-sight than Seyfert 2. Introducing AGN anisotropic emission besides the more physical dust sublimation models alleviates the problem of requiring inverted radial cloud distributions (i.e., more clouds towards the outer parts of the torus) to explain the MIR spectral indices of type 2 Seyferts., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Spectral features from PAH molecules observed in the mid-IR range are typically used to infer the amount of recent and ongoing star formation (SF) on kpc scales around AGN where more traditional methods fail. This assumes that the observed PAH features are excited predominantly by SF. With current ground-based telescopes and the upcoming JWST, much smaller spatial scales can be probed and we aim at testing this assumption in the range of few tens to few hundreds of pc. For that, we spatially map the emitted 11.3{\mu}m PAH surface flux as a function of distance from 0.4-4 arcsec from the centre in 28 nearby AGN using ground-based high-angular resolution mid-IR spectroscopy. We detect and extract the 11.3{\mu}m PAH feature in 13 AGN. The fluxes within each aperture are scaled to a luminosity-normalised distance from the nucleus to be able to compare intrinsic spatial scales of AGN radiation spanning about 2 orders of magnitude in luminosity. For this, we establish an empirical relation between the absorption-corrected X-ray luminosity and the sublimation radius in these sources. Once normalised, the radial profiles of the emitted PAH surface flux show similar radial slopes, with a power-law index of approximately -1.1, and similar absolute values, consistent within a factor of a few of each other as expected from the uncertainty in the intrinsic scale estimate. We interpret this as evidence that the profiles are caused by a common compact central physical process, either the AGN itself or circumnuclear SF linked in strength to the AGN power. A photoionisation-based model of an AGN exciting dense clouds in its environment can reproduce the observed radial slope and confirms that the AGN radiation field is strong enough to explain the observed PAH surface fluxes within ~10-500 pc of the nucleus. An overpotential model for planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is developed and applied to a stack numerical simulation. Charge-transfer distribution within the electrodes are approximated using an exponential function, based on which the Ohmic loss and activation overpotential are evaluated. The predicted current-voltage characteristics agree well with the experimental results, and also the overpotentials within the cell can reproduce the results obtained from a numerical analysis where the distribution of the charge-transfer current within the electrodes is fully solved. The proposed model is expected to be useful to maintain the accuracy of SOFC simulations when the cell components, consisting of anode, electrolyte and cathode, are simplified into one layer element.

The effects of oxygen addition to the methane fuels directly supplied to solid oxide fuel cells were investigated. Fundamental experiments were conducted using Ni-YSZ cermet as a typical anode material. The Ni-YSZ catalysts having different streamwise lengths were fabricated on the YSZ flat plates. Premixed gas of methane, oxygen, nitrogen and stream was supplied to the test catalyst set in a rectangular test channel. The exhaust gas compositions and the surface temperature distributions of the test catalyst were measured. It was found that the oxidation of methane prominently proceeded near the upstream edge of the catalyst followed by steam/dry reforming reactions downstream. It resulted in a formation of the high temperature region leading a large temperature gradient in the streamwise direction.

The time lag between optical and near-infrared continuum emission in active galactic nuclei (AGN) shows a tight correlation with luminosity and has been proposed as a standardisable candle for cosmology. In this paper, we explore the use of these AGN hot-dust time lags for cosmological model fitting under the constraints of the new VISTA Extragalactic Infrared Legacy Survey VEILS. This new survey will target a 9 deg^2 field observed in J- and Ks-band with a 14-day cadence and will run for three years. The same area will be covered simultaneously in the optical griz bands by the Dark Energy Survey, providing complementary time-domain optical data. We perform realistic simulations of the survey setup, showing that we expect to recover dust time lags for about 450 objects out of a total of 1350 optical type 1 AGN, spanning a redshift range of 0.1 < z < 1.2. We use the lags recovered from our simulations to calculate precise distance moduli, establish a Hubble diagram, and fit cosmological models. Assuming realistic scatter in the distribution of the dust around the AGN as well as in the normalisation of the lag-luminosity relation, we are able to constrain {\Omega}_{\Lambda} in {\Lambda}CDM with similar accuracy as current supernova samples. The Planet Formation Imager (PFI) project aims to provide a strong scientific vision for ground-based optical astronomy beyond the upcoming generation of Extremely Large Telescopes. We make the case that a breakthrough in angular resolution imaging capabilities is required in order to unravel the processes involved in planet formation. PFI will be optimised to provide a complete census of the protoplanet population at all stellocentric radii and over the age range from 0.1 to ∼100 Myr. Within this age period, planetary systems undergo dramatic changes and the final architecture of planetary systems is determined. Our goal is to study the planetary birth on the natural spatial scale where the material is assembled, which is the "Hill Sphere" of the forming planet, and to characterise the protoplanetary cores by measuring their masses and physical properties. Our science working group has investigated the observational characteristics of these young protoplanets as well as the migration mechanisms that might alter the system architecture. We simulated the imprints that the planets leave in the disk and study how PFI could revolutionise areas ranging from exoplanet to extragalactic science. In this paper, we present a method to extract urban areas from X-band fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. It is known that very high resolution (VHR) SAR can extract buildings, but it requires more processes to map urban areas that should include other objects. The proposed method is mainly composed of two classifications. One classification uses total power of scattering and volume scattering derived by using four component decomposition method with correction of the polarization orientation angle (POA) effect. The other classification uses polarimetric coherency between SHH and SVV. The two results are intersected and final urban areas are extracted after post-classification processing. We applied the proposed method to airborne X-band fully polarimetric SAR data of Polarimetric and Interferometric Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar System (Pi-SAR2), developed by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan. The validation show that the results of the proposed method were acceptable, with an overall accuracy of approximately 80 to 90% at 100-m spatial scale.

We carried out a trans-ancestry genome-wide association and replication study of blood pressure phenotypes among up to 320,251 individuals of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. We find genetic variants at 12 new loci to be associated with blood pressure (P = 3.9 × 10 -11 to 5.0 × 10 -21). The sentinel blood pressure SNPs are enriched for association with DNA methylation at multiple nearby CpG sites, suggesting that, at some of the loci identified, DNA methylation may lie on the regulatory pathway linking sequence variation to blood pressure. The sentinel SNPs at the 12 new loci point to genes involved in vascular smooth muscle (IGFBP3, KCNK3, PDE3A and PRDM6) and renal (ARHGAP24, OSR1, SLC22A7 and TBX2) function. The new and known genetic variants predict increased left ventricular mass, circulating levels of NT-proBNP, and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality (P = 0.04 to 8.6 × 10 -6). Our results provide new evidence for the role of DNA methylation in blood pressure regulation.
