1. The subtle effects of implicit bias instructions

Abstract

Judges are increasingly using “implicit bias” instructions in jury trials in an effort to reduce the influence of jurors' biases on judgment. In this article, we report on findings from a large-scale mock jury study that tests the impact of implicit bias instructions on judgment in a case where defendant race was varied (Black or White). Using an experimental design, we collected and analyzed quantitative and qualitative data at the individual and group levels obtained from 120 small groups who viewed a simulated federal drug conspiracy trial and then deliberated to determine a verdict. We find that while participants were sensitized to the importance of being unbiased, implicit bias instructions had no measurable impact on verdict outcomes relative to the standard instructions. Our analysis of the deliberations, however, reveals that those who heard the implicit bias instructions were more likely to discuss the issue of bias, potentially with both ameliorative and harmful effects on the defendant. Most significantly, we identified multiple instances where, in an effort to avoid bias, participants who heard the implicit bias instructions interfered with their own or other participants' appropriate assessments of witness credibility.

Abstract

Every year 25 000 Australians experience a cardiac arrest in our community, but only 12% survive. The faster cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillation, known as basic life support (BLS), is commenced, the greater the chance of survival. Currently, only half of the Australian adults are trained in BLS. The Australian Resuscitation Council and key stakeholder organisations believe that the best way to ensure all Australians know how to save a life is by mandating BLS education and training in our schools. This ‘Aussie KIDS SAVE LIVES’ position statement outlines our strategy to help facilitate the introduction of a programme of regular BLS training into the Australian school curriculum.

Background: Despite recognition of the benefits of post-school education in improving life outcomes for autistic adults their university completion rates remain low. Aim: To explore the experiences of undergraduate autistic university students participating in specialist peer mentoring (SPM) to identify active ingredients in the peer mentoring process and to examine the impact of SPM on social communication. Material and method: A total of 30 (8 female; M age = 22.3; SD = 6.7) undergraduate autistic university students engaged in SPM participated in this study. A quantitative pre-test post-test design examined changes in autistic traits. In parallel, the experiences of participating in SPM were explored through semi-structured interviews. Results: Improvements were noted at post-test on the Social Responsiveness Scale-2 total score p = 0.02), and its Social Communication, (p = 0.03) and Social Motivation (p = 0.03) sub-scales. Four themes emerged from the interviews: Developing Partnership and Understanding, Modelling and Practising Communication, Psychological Support and Grading and Planning Skills. Conclusions: These results indicated that the mentor-mentee partnership was a crucial active ingredient of SPM. 8. P174 High aerosol production of potentially infectious cough aerosols in people with cystic fibrosis during coughing

Abstract

Objectives: Our group has investigated the extent of Pseudomonas aeruginosa aerosol release during cough in people with CF (Knibbs, Thorax, 2014; Wood, AJRCCM, 2018; Stockwell, AJRCCM, 2018). We have demonstrated the concentration of P. aeruginosa cough aerosols is highly variable between patients, yet the only factor associated with aerosol concentration is the sputum concentration of the pathogen. Therefore, we aimed to investigate (using the merged datasets) if additional clinical factors are associated with aerosol production. Methods: The merged P. aeruginosa cough aerosol study datasets were analysed for factors associated with cough aerosol production. Participants were categorised into high producers if the P. aeruginosa aerosol count was ≥10 colony forming units (CFU) or low producers if the count was < 10 CFU (Jones-Lopez, AJRCCM, 2013). Results: Fifty-two people with CF and chronic P. aeruginosa infection performed 68 cough tests. P. aeruginosa sputum concentration was the only factor associated with P. aeruginosa aerosol concentration (r=0.61;p< 0.001). No associations were seen for gender (p=0.78), FEV1% predicted (r=-0.025;p=0.86), BMI (r=-0.23;p=0.11), age (r=0.22;p=0.13), modulator use (p=0.47), C-reactive protein level (r=-0.24;p=0.87) or other pathogens in sputum (p=0.16). The sputum concentration association was also seen in 12 subjects that were recruited to multiple (2-3) cough tests. Over time, the cough aerosol category did not change in 9 subjects (8/9 remained high producer; 1/9 remained low producer) but did change in 3 subjects (2/3 changed from high to low producers; 1/3 changed from low to high producer). Conclusions: P. aeruginosa sputum concentration strongly predicts for P. aeruginosa cough aerosol concentration. Production of cough aerosol (high/low producers) was unchanged over time for most participants

Abstract

PURPOSE: Nuclear cardiology is widely used to diagnose coronary artery disease and to guide patient management, but data on current practices, radiation dose-related best practices, and radiation doses are scarce. To address these issues, the IAEA conducted a worldwide study of nuclear cardiology practice. We present the European subanalysis. METHODS: In March 2013, the IAEA invited laboratories across the world to document all SPECT and PET studies performed in one week. The data included age, gender, weight, radiopharmaceuticals, injected activities, camera type, positioning, hardware and software. Radiation effective dose was calculated for each patient. A quality score was defined for each laboratory as the number followed of eight predefined best practices with a bearing on radiation exposure (range of quality score 0 - 8). The participating European countries were assigned to regions (North, East, South, and West). Comparisons were performed between the four European regions and between Europe and the rest-of-the-world (RoW). RESULTS: Data on 2,381 European patients undergoing nuclear cardiology procedures in 102 laboratories in 27 countries were collected. A cardiac SPECT study was performed in 97.9 % of the patients, and a PET study in 2.1 %. The average effective dose of SPECT was 8.0 ± 3.4 mSv (RoW 11.4 ± 4.3 mSv; P < 0.001) and of PET was 2.6 ± 1.5 mSv (RoW 3.8 ± 2.5 mSv; P < 0.001). The mean effective doses of SPECT and PET differed between European regions (P < 0.001 and P = 0.002, respectively). The mean quality score was 6.2 ± 1.2, which was higher than the RoW score (5.0 ± 1.1; P < 0.001). Adherence to best practices did not differ significantly among the European regions (range 6 to 6.4; P = 0.73). Of the best practices, stress-only imaging and weight-adjusted dosing were the least commonly used. CONCLUSION: In Europe, the mean effective dose from nuclear cardiology is lower and the average quality score is higher than in the RoW. There is regional

Abstract

AIMS: To characterize patient radiation doses from nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and the use of radiation-optimizing 'best practices' worldwide, and to evaluate the relationship between laboratory use of best practices and patient radiation dose. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted an observational cross-sectional study of protocols used for all 7911 MPI studies performed in 308 nuclear cardiology laboratories in 65 countries for a single week in March-April 2013. Eight 'best practices' relating to radiation exposure were identified a priori by an expert committee, and a radiation-related quality index (QI) devised indicating the number of best practices used by a laboratory. Patient radiation effective dose (ED) ranged between 0.8 and 35.6 mSv (median 10.0 mSv). Average laboratory ED ranged from 2.2 to 24.4 mSv (median 10.4 mSv); only 91 (30%) laboratories achieved the median ED ≤ 9 mSv recommended by guidelines. Laboratory QIs ranged from 2 to 8 (median 5). Both ED and QI differed significantly between laboratories, countries, and world regions. The lowest median ED (8.0 mSv), in Europe, coincided with high best-practice adherence (mean laboratory QI 6.2). The highest doses (median 12.1 mSv) and low QI (4.9) occurred in Latin America. In hierarchical regression modelling, patients undergoing MPI at laboratories following more 'best practices' had lower EDs. CONCLUSION: Marked worldwide variation exists in radiation safety practices pertaining to MPI, with targeted EDs currently achieved in a minority of laboratories. The significant relationship between best-practice implementation and lower doses indicates numerous opportunities to reduce radiation exposure from MPI globally.

We found that migrating mesodermal cells in vivo respond to Slit as both an attractant and a repellent and that Robo receptors are required for both functions. Mesoderm cells expressing Robo receptors initially migrate away from Slit at the midline. A few hours after migration, these same cells change their behavior and require Robo to extend toward Slit-expressing muscle attachment sites. Thus, Slit functions as a chemoattractant to provide specificity for muscle patterning.

18. SAAM: An Integrated Network Architecture for Integrated Services

Abstract

The current network architecture is based predominantly on stand-alone routers. It is becoming overtaxed with the introduction of integrated services. In this paper, we propose a Server and Agent based Active network Management (SAAM) architecture that scales well with integrated services. SAAM relieves individual routers from most routing and network management tasks. Instead, it employs a small number of dedicated servers to perform these tasks on behalf of the routers. In particular, these servers maintain a path information base (PIB), with which network functions, such as QoS routing and re-routing of real-time flows, can be efficiently implemented. We describe a scaleable architecture for organizing the servers as well as a concrete design of the PIB. SAAM has the potential of offering a common platform where multiple network functions --- such as routing, resource reservation, network management, accounting and security --- can be integrated.
