Tiivistelmä. Lasten aggressiivisuuden lisääntymisen myötä kiinnipitotilanteiden tarpeen voidaan tulkita kasvaneen kasvatuksen ja koulutuksen kentällä. Varhaiskasvatuslaissa (540/2018) ei ole mainintaa lasten kiinnipitotilanteista, minkä vuoksi varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaisilla ei ole valtakunnallisia ohjeistuksia kiinnipitotilanteisiin. Aiheesta on vähän saatavilla olevaa tutkimustietoa varhaiskasvatuksen kontekstissa. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli tuottaa tietoa varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaisten toimiviksi koetuista käytänteistä kiinnipitotilanteiden ennakointiin, kiinnipitotilanteisiin ja jälkiselvittelyyn liittyen. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää myös paikallisten ohjeistusten saatavuutta ja kouluttautuneisuutta sekä ohjeistuksiin ja koulutuksiin liittyviä kehittämistarpeita. Lisäksi tavoitteenamme oli selvittää kiinnipitotilanteiden esiintyvyyttä varhaiskasvatuksessa. Fenomenologinen lähestymistapa sopii hyvin tarkastelemaan varhaiskasvatusammattilaisten kokemuksia ja kuvamaan koettua arkea. Sähköinen kyselyaineisto analysoitiin teoriaohjaavalla sisällönanalyysilla. Tutkielman tulosten mukaan kiinnipitotilanteiden ennakoinnissa toimivaksi koettiin lapsen tunteiden hallinnan tukeminen, toimintakulttuurin kehittäminen, arjen rakenteellinen toimivuus sekä lasta tukevan aikuisen toiminta. Kiinnipitotilanteen toimivat käytänteet muodostuivat toimintatavoista, aikuisen toiminnasta sekä turvallisuudesta. Jälkiselvittelyyn liittyviin toimiviin käytänteisiin sisällytettiin kiinnipitotilanteen läpikäynti lapsen kanssa sensitiivisellä tavalla, läpikäynti ja jatkosuunnitelman laatiminen sekä raportointi- ja ilmoitusmenettelyt. Kaikki esille nousseet toimiviksi koetut käytänteet kohdistuivat ympäristön ja aikuisen toiminnan muokkaamiseen, mitä voidaan pitää lapsen tuen järjestämisen lähtökohtana. Purpose: Inappropriately reported or conducted studies may decrease the quality of care due to under- or overestimation of the benefits or harms of interventions. Our aim was to evaluate how often hand surgical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) use and report adequate methods to ensure internal validity, and whether inadequate reporting or methods are associated with the magnitude of treatment effect estimates. Methods: Data Sources were the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, and Embase databases until November 2020. We included published RCTs investigating the effects of any surgical intervention in the hand and wrist region. We assessed internal validity using the Cochrane Risk of Bias (RoB) tool for 6 domains: selection, performance, detection, attrition, selective reporting, and “other” bias. We extracted the primary outcome and calculated the effect size for each study. We used mixed-effect meta-regression to assess whether the RoB modified the magnitude of the effects. Results: For 207 assessed trials, the RoB was unclear or high for 72% in selection, 93% in performance, 88% in detection, 25% in attrition, 22% in selective reporting, and 34% in the “other” bias domain. Trials with a high or unclear risk of selection bias yielded 0.28 standardized mean difference (95% confidence interval, 0.02–0.55) larger effect sizes compared to studies with a low risk. Risks of bias for other domains did not modify the intervention effects. The risk for selection bias declined over time: the odds ratio for a high or unclear RoB was 0.90 (95% confidence interval, 0.85–0.95) per additional year of publication. Conclusions: The internal validity and credibility of hand surgical RCTs can be improved by using established methods to achieve true randomization, blinding of the participants and study personnel, publishing the trial protocol and avoiding selective reporting of the outcomes, and reporting the trial as recommended in the Consolidated St

Objectives: To identify the evidence gaps that exist regarding the efficacy or effectiveness of hand surgery. Setting: A scoping review. We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase and CENTRAL databases to identify all hand surgical randomised controlled trials from inception to 7 November 2020. Results: Of the 220 identified randomised controlled trials, none were fundamental efficacy trials, that is, compared surgery with placebo surgery. 172 (78%) trials compared the outcomes of different surgical techniques, and 143 (65%) trials were trauma related. We identified only 47 (21%) trials comparing surgery with non-operative care or injection. Conclusions: The evidence supporting use of surgery especially for chronic hand conditions is scarce. To determine optimal care for people with hand conditions, more resources should be aimed at placebo-controlled trials and pragmatic effectiveness trials comparing hand surgery with non-operative care.

Importance: Nonspecific effects, particularly placebo effects, are thought to contribute significantly to the observed effect in surgical trials. Objective: To estimate the proportion of the observed effect of surgical treatment that is due to nonspecific effects (including the placebo effect). Data Sources: Published Cochrane reviews and updated, extended search of MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL until March 2019. Study Selection: Published randomized placebo-controlled surgical trials and trials comparing the effect of the same surgical interventions with nonoperative controls (ie, no treatment, usual care, or exercise program). Data Extraction and Synthesis: Pairs of authors independently screened the search results, assessed full texts to identify eligible studies and the risk of bias of included studies, and extracted data. The proportion of all nonspecific effects was calculated as the change in the placebo control divided by the change in the active surgery and pooled in a random-effect meta-analysis. To estimate the magnitude of the placebo effect, we pooled the difference in outcome between placebo and nonoperative controls and used metaregression to estimate the association between the type of control group and the treatment effect (difference between the groups), adjusting for risk of bias, sample size, and type of outcome. Main Outcomes and Measures: Between- and within-group effect sizes expressed as Hedges g. Results: In this review, 100 trials were included comprising data from 62 trials with placebo controls (3 also included nonoperative controls), and 38 trials with nonoperative controls (32 interventions; 10 699 participants). Risk of bias across trials was comparable except for performance and detection bias, which was high in trials with nonoperative controls. Aim: To describe features of maxillary permanent canines in the late mixed stage as seen in panoramic radiograph (PTG) that later needed treatment to erupt into the oral cavity and to compare them with naturally erupted canines. Methods: The cross-sectional part of this retrospective register-based study consisted of 1454 PTGs of children (mean age 9.3 years) living in Eastern Finland, while the longitudinal part involved patient data on 184 treated maxillary canines. The variables examined were treatment needs, overlapping and inclination of the maxillary canines, the development stage of the canines and lateral incisors and dental age. Results: Only 11.6% of the maxillary canines needed treatment, including interceptive procedures. The treated canines significantly more often had overlapping (p < 0.001), larger inclination (p = 0.001) and incomplete lateral incisors (p = 0.002) than did the naturally erupted canines. The children treated significantly more often had a delayed dental age (p = 0.035). Clear overlapping was closely associated with all treatment modalities, whereas some overlapping and a large inclination angle (≥ 25°) were associated especially in cases of late treatment. An incomplete lateral incisor and delayed dental age were associated with treatment. Conclusion: An association with treatment needs was found especially in the case of overlapping and a large inclination angle of the maxillary canine a couple of years before eruption into the oral cavity. These features can be early signs and indications for instant or later treatment of a maxillary canine and underline the importance of monitoring space conditions and erupting canines.

The number and severity of natural hazards has increased in recent decades. These natural hazards cause billions in financial damage, as well as loss of life every year. Fortunately, societies have learned to adapt to these phenomena and invested in managing and mitigating their effects. Communication plays a key role in managing these natural disasters and the effects they smite upon communities. At the same time, information and communication technologies have become ubiquitous and integral part of our lives. However, the available technologies and the ability to utilize these technologies vary. Thus, there is a need for up-to-date review of the use of these technologies. In this thesis, the role of information and communication technologies in natural disaster management communication is examined. The purpose of this thesis is to aggregate scientific knowledge on the role of information and communication technologies in natural disaster management communication. As a result, this study used systematic literature review as a research method. In addition, the aim is to identify possible best practices and discuss the findings of the systematic literature review. The results are used to inform future work on developing an opensource-based system for natural disaster management. The main contribution of this thesis is the summarization of the findings. These findings can be used as a knowledge base or to reflect upon new solutions in natural disaster management. The search strategy used in this study identified 584 studies in total from which 24 primary studies were selected. Recommended future actions involve further studying the identified best practices and their application in practice. In addition, further developing the proposed artifact is recommended.

Aim: To describe the variation of eruption pattern of maxillary canines in the late mixed stage of dentition seen in PTG when eruption was later natural. Methods: Material for this longitudinal and retrospective register-based study consisted of 1454 PTGs of children living in Eastern Finland (mean age 9.3 years, SD 0.6). Natural eruption of a canine consisted of 744 PTGs (336 girls and 408 boys) including 1488 maxillary canines. The variables examined were treatment/natural eruption, overlapping, inclination, dental age, developmental stage of the canine and lateral incisor. Results: Only 2.0% of maxillary canines had clear overlapping and 56.2% no overlapping was detected at the age of 8.5–10.5 years. Large inclination angle (≥ 25°) was found for 5.5% of examined canines. Overlapping of canine with lateral incisor root decreased as the development of canine root exceeded 1/3. Larger inclinations occurred at earlier stages but decreased significantly as the root developed from 1/3 to 1/2. Mean inclination was significantly larger at children with normal dental age and/or incomplete lateral incisors when overlapping occurred. Regardless overlapping mean inclination was larger if dental age was delayed and/or lateral incisors incomplete. Conclusion: Some overlapping and larger inclination in maxillary canine are features of normal eruption pattern at an earlier stage of canine development and while lateral incisor is incomplete in PTG (8.5–10.5 years). In addition to the overlapping and inclination, stages of canine and lateral incisor root as well as dental age should be observed radiologically when evaluating erupting maxillary canine in children of this age.

Tiivistelmä. Tämä kandidaatin tutkielma käsittelee varhaiskasvatusikäisten lasten sosioemotionaalisia vaikeuksia ja niiden kohtaamista varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaisten näkökulmasta. Keskeisenä pyrkimyksenä on tavoittaa tekijöitä varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaisten toiminnan taustalla lasten sosioemotionaalisten vaikeuksien kohtaamiseen liittyen. Tutkielma toteutetaan integroivana kirjallisuuskatsauksena. Integroivan kirjallisuuskatsauksen tavoin tutkielmassa kootaan keskeistä aiheeseen liittyvää sekä ajankohtaista tutkimuskirjallisuutta. Tutkimuskirjallisuuden valikoinnissa huomioidaan objektiivisuus sekä luotettavuuskysymykset. Tutkielman tulokset osoittavat, että varhaiskasvatusikäisten lasten sosioemotionaaliset vaikeudet ilmenevät usein aggressiivisuutena, levottomuutena, uhmakkuutena, vetäytymisenä tai tunteidenpurkauksina. Varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaiset tulkitsevat lasten sosioemotionaalisista vaikeuksista johtuvan käyttäytymisen usein haastavana sekä ongelmalähtöisenä. Kyseisen käyttäytymisen kohtaaminen herättää kasvattajissa tunteita ja tulkintoja, jotka ovat yhteydessä vuorovaikutuksen sekä tukemisen laatuun. Tunteiden lisäksi varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaisten toimintaan lasten sosioemotionaalisiin vaikeuksiin liittyen vaikuttaa myös merkittävästi koulutus sekä sen puutteet. Varhaiskasvatuksen ammattilaisten ymmärrys lasten sosioemotionaaliseen kehitykseen ja tukemiseen liittyen on todettu riittämättömäksi, mikä näyttäytyy lasten kohtaamisessa sekä vähäisissä tuen keinoissa. Koulutuksen puutteellisuus tulee esille myös ammattilaisten jaksamisessa sekä ammatillisuuden kokemuksessa. Tutkielman yhtenä päämääränä oli lisätä ymmärrystä lasten sosioemotionaalisista vaikeuksista, niiden ilmenemisestä sekä ilmenemisen taustalla olevista syistä. Ymmärryksen myötä tutkielma purkaa painolastia sellaisten lasten harteilta, jotka kamppailevat sosioemotionaalisten vaikeuksien kanssa. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on syventää ymmärrystä hakukonemarkkinoinnin ja hakukoneoptimoinnin keinoista mikroyrityksien näkökulmasta tarkasteltuna. Tavoitteena on myös tuoda esille, minkälaisia hyväksi koettuja käytäntöjä hakukonemarkkinoinnissa on. Hakukonemarkkinointi jaetaan maksulliseen hakukonemainontaan ja verkkosivustolle tehtävään hakukoneoptimointiin. Hakukonemarkkinoinnin keinoin yritys voi pyrkiä parantamaan näkyvyyttään hakukoneissa mainostamalla siellä tai optimoimalla sivujen sisältöä ja rakennetta. Tässä tutkimuksessa on tarkoitus tarkastella hakukonemarkkinoinnin toteutusta mikroyrityksessä. Tutkimusongelmaa tarkastellaan hakukonemainontaa ja hakukoneoptimointia käsittelevien teorioiden pohjalta keskittyen yhteen suurimpaan hakukoneeseen Googleen. Teorioiden pohjalta muodostetaan teoreettinen viitekehys. Teoriaosuus tarkastelee keinoja ja työkaluja, joiden avulla hakukonemarkkinointi on mahdollista toteuttaa. Tutkimuksen teoriaosuudessa kartoitetaan myös mahdollisia haasteita, joita hakukonemarkkinointi pitää sisällään. Teoriaosuuden muodostamisessa on pyritty hyödyntämään tieteellisiä alan julkaisuja mahdollisimman monipuolisesti. Tutkimus toteutettiin kvalitatiivisena tutkimuksena, sillä tutkimuksessa pyrittiin löytämään ja kuvailemaan hakukonemarkkinointia käytännössä toteutettavan pilottihankkeen kautta. Hakukonemarkkinointiin liittyviä ilmiöitä pyrittiin kuvailemaan tutkittavien henkilöiden eli tutkimuskohteena olleen pienyrityksen toimijoiden kautta. Tutkimuksen empiirinen aineisto kerättiin puolistrukturoidun teemahaastattelun ja kampanjan havainnoinnin keinoin. Tutkimuksen kohteeksi valikoitui mikroyritys, jolla ei ollut juurikaan aikaisempaa kokemusta oman yrityksensä hakukonemarkkinoinnin toteuttamisesta. The degradation of rivers and streams has led to world-wide efforts to restore freshwater habitats. A good understanding of the social-ecological context is considered key to successful restoration. In this thesis, a multidisciplinary framework was applied to study ecological and social dimensions of restoration success. First, the long-term performance of in-stream restoration measures was examined by conducting repeated cross-sectional surveys in restored streams up to 20 years post-restoration. Next, nationwide electrofishing data were used to assess the density responses of juvenile salmonids to habitat restoration and factors influencing restoration success were examined. Finally, changes in the provision of ecosystem services were evaluated by comparing the perceptions of restoration outcomes between two user groups and three study rivers. The results indicated that the restoration-induced increase in habitat heterogeneity persisted over time, initiating an overall positive development also in biological metrics (i.e. juvenile salmonids and aquatic mosses). However, overall substrate variability in restored streams remained lower than in near-pristine streams, with a shortage of gravel beds. Fish responses varied strongly between rivers, which was explained mainly by watershed scale (e.g. river basin size, dominant geology) and local (potential interspecific competition) factors. Site-specific differences were also observed in the delivery of ecosystem services, mainly reflecting stakeholder perceptions of landscape value and fish provisioning. Overall, the results show that setting indicators and target levels for restoration success is grounded on perspective. Socially conscious ecological restoration that acknowledges local specialities and needs in priority setting, planning and implementation has the potential to provide multiple benefits for river ecosystems and society., Tiivistelmä Virtavesien ekologisen tilan heikentyminen on johtanut maailmanlaajuisiin toimiin niiden elinympäristöjen kunnostamiseksi. Usein ekologisen kunnostuksen onnistuminen edellyttää kuitenkin ihmisen ja ympäristön vuorovaikutussuhteiden laaja-alaista ymmärtämistä. Tässä väitöskirjatutkimuksessa käytettiin monitieteistä viitekehystä virtavesikunnostusten ekologisten ja sosiaalisten vaikutusten tutkimiseen. Ensimmäisessä osatyössä arvioitiin kunnostustoimenpiteiden kestävyyttä sekä uoman rakenteellisen monimuotoisuuden kehittymistä pitkällä aikavälillä (10–20 vuotta kunnostusten jälkeen). Toisessa osatyössä tehtiin valtakunnallisen sähkökalastusaineiston avulla meta-analyysipohjainen yhteenveto suomalaisten virtavesikunnostusten vaikutuksista taimenen ja lohen kesänvanhojen (0+) poikasten tiheyteen sekä tutkittiin kunnostustulokseen vaikuttavia ympäristötekijöitä. Kolmannessa osatyössä selvitettiin kunnostusten onnistumista ekosysteemipalvelujen näkökulmasta vertaamalla kahden eri käyttäjäryhmän kokemia muutoksia kolmen tutkimusjoen välillä. Väitöskirjan tulokset osoittivat, että kunnostukset lisäsivät jokiuoman rakenteellista monimuotoisuutta sekä lyhyellä että pitkällä aikavälillä ja vaikuttivat myönteisesti myös biologisiin indikaattoreihin (lohikalojen poikastiheys ja vesisammalet). Vaihtelu pohjan laadussa oli kuitenkin luonnontilaisia uomia vähäisempää ja erityisesti kutuun soveltuvaa soraa oli niukasti. Lohikalojen tiheysvaste vaihteli voimakkaasti jokien välillä, mikä selittyi pääasiassa valuma-alueeseen liittyvillä (esim. valuma-alueen koko ja geologia) ja paikallisilla (mahdollinen lajien välinen kilpailu) tekijöillä. Paikkasidonnaisia eroja havaittiin myös vaikutuksissa ekosysteemipalveluihin ja ne heijastivat etenkin maisemassa ja kalasaaliissa koettuja muutoksia. This master’s thesis examines the use of English as an additional linguistic resource in the language of Finnish young women’s magazines. The aim of the thesis is to study the amount of English in the magazines as well as the ways in which English is mixed with Finnish. Furthermore, one goal is to discuss the possible reasons for the use of English instead of Finnish with the help of previous research done on the role of English in Finland. The data of the study consists of the September 2016 issues of Demi, Trendi and the Finnish Cosmopolitan, and the research method is qualitative analysis. The study was conducted by gathering examples of the use of English in the magazines and categorizing and analyzing the findings. The findings of the study were also compared with the results of previous studies in the field. The study showed that the articles in the magazines include many examples of code-switching both inside and between clauses. The articles also include plenty of loanwords from English, and among the examples there are both older and newer loans. Some of the loan words have been adapted to the Finnish phonological, orthographical and grammatical system, but many of the newer words have also been loaned as citation loans. In addition, there are a lot of references to English company, product and people’s names in the articles. The magazines also include many advertisements, which were studied separately. The study showed that English is used in various degrees in the great majority of the advertisements published in Demi, Trendi and Cosmopolitan. Among the advertisements studied, only a few are fully English, but English is commonly used in addition to Finnish in the form of English product names, loan words, pictures with English texts and code-switching. Overall, the findings of the study show that English is used extensively and versatilely as an additional linguistic resource in the genre of Finnish young women’s magazines. Tutkimus toteutettiin keräämällä esimerkkejä englannin kielen käytöstä lehdissä, jaottelemalla esimerkit vastaaviin kategorioihin ja analysoimalla löydökset. Tuloksia verrattiin myös aiemmin alalla tehtyjen tutkimusten havaintoihin. Tutkimus osoitti, että lehdissä käytetään suhteellisen paljon koodinvaihtoa sekä saman lauseen sisällä että eri lauseiden välillä. Tekstit sisältävät myös runsaasti sekä uudempia että vanhempia lainasanoja. Osa lainoista on mukautettu paremmin sopiviksi suomen kielen fonologiseen, ortografiseen ja kieliopilliseen järjestelmään, mutta erityisesti uudempien lainasanojen joukossa on myös monia sitaattilainoja. Koodinvaihdon ja lainasanojen lisäksi artikkelit sisältävät myös runsaasti viittauksia englanninkielisiin yritysten, tuotteiden ja ihmisten nimiin. Lehtien omien artikkeleiden lisäksi lehdet sisältävät useita kaupallisia mainoksia, joiden englannin kielen käyttöä tutkittiin erikseen. Tulokset osoittivat, että suurin osa mainoksista sisältää englantia ainakin jonkin verran. Vain muutama lehdissä julkaistuista mainoksista on täysin englanninkielisiä, mutta englannin käyttö osoittautui erittäin yleiseksi suomen kielen seassa, esimerkiksi yritysten ja tuotteiden nimissä, lainasanoina, koodinvaihtona ja tuotekuvien sisältämissä teksteissä. Suomessa erityisesti Pohjanlahden rannikolla entisen Litorinameren alueella esiintyy sulfidisedimenttejä. Sulfidisedimenttejä sisältävien alueiden kuivatus esim. maa- tai metsätalouden tai turvetuotannon tarpeisiin aiheuttaa jokiin ja vesistöihin hapanta kuormitusta. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää happamien valumavesien neutraloimiseen käytettyjä menetelmiä sekä kehittää ja testata ratkaisuja happamilla sulfaattimailla sijaitsevien turvetuotantoalueiden valumavesien käsittelyyn. Selvityksen tuloksena päädyttiin testaamaan kahta neutralointimenetelmää, alivirtaamaputkella varustettua suodinpatoa ja leijutuskolonnia. Menetelmiä testattiin Laukkuvuoman turvetuotantoalueella Ylitorniossa ja Hangasnevan turvetuotantoalueella Siikajoella. Alivirtaamaputkella varustetut suodinpadot rakennettiin Laukkuvuomalle ja niitä testattiin vuosina 2012 ja 2013. Materiaaleina suodinpadoissa oli toisessa kalkkikiveä ja toisessa teräskuonaa. Hangasnevalla testattiin kesällä 2013 kolmen päivän ajan leijutuskolonnia, jossa neutralointimateriaalina käytettiin granuloitua kalsiumhydroksidia. Kummankin menetelmän seuraamisessa käytettiin hyväksi jatkuvatoimista pH-mittausta, pH:n kenttämittausta ja leijutuskolonnissa myös mm. asiditeetin analysointia vesinäytteistä. Alivirtaamaputkella varustetun suodinpadon toimintaperiaatteena on ohjata pienet, yleensä ei kovin happamat valumat alivirtaamaputkea pitkin neutralointimateriaalin ohi. This thesis is based on the premise that formal education could promote ethical relationships with the environment and empower children to act towards a better future. The aim of the thesis is to create understanding about Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in relation to the definition of sustainable development and everyday experiences. In order to strengthen the practical relevance and an alternative educational approach in ESD, both children’s and teacher’s perspectives are explored in three studies. Methodologically this thesis follows qualitative and phenomenological guidelines. Method pluralism is applied in order to illuminate the complexity of lived experiences. Methods such as written reflections, drawings, evaluative walks and focus group interviews are used. Qualitative analysis in the studies aims to be transparent, starting from data collection and right up to the thematic discussions. The first study focused on children’s experiences in a schoolyard and resulted in three themes: learning, social relations and institutional boundaries. These themes described a schoolyard as a lived place and children’s outdoor experiences as part of the continuum of the whole schoolday. The second study focused on children’s visions of the future and elucidated how children relate to temporality through moral, temporal and spatial distances. Children’s visions of the future are necessary to address in ESD due the aspect of intergenerational justice. In the third study teachers experiences of an ESD school-project were studied by focus group interviews. This study emphasized teacher’s institutional circumstances in working with ESD and their understanding of environmental awareness. The study suggested that in classroom situations the contradictory nature of sustainable development was often replaced by teaching more conventional issues related to the environment. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on lisätä ymmärrystä kestävän kehityksen kasvatuksesta (ESD) suhteessa kestävän kehityksen käsitteeseen ja arkielämän kokemuksiin. Sekä lasten että aikuisten näkökulmat ovat esillä tässä tutkimuksessa, jossa pyritään vahvistamaan ESD:n käytännön merkityksellisyyttä sekä etsimään vaihtoehtoisia kasvatusnäkökulmia. Tutkimuksen metodologia seuraa laadullisen ja fenomenologisen tutkimuksen suuntaviivoja. Tässä väitöskirjassa sovelletaan useita eri metodeja, kuten lasten kirjallisia pohdintoja, piirroksia, kävelykierroksia ja aikuisten focus group -haastatteluja. Med intentionen att belysa komplexiteten av levda erfarenheter har flera datainsamlingsmetoder använts; skrivna reflektioner, teckningar, utvärderande promenader och fokusgruppsintervjuer. Den första studien fokuserade barnens erfarenheter av en skolgård och resulterade i tre teman: lärande, sociala relationer och institutionella gränser. Dessa teman beskrev skolgården som en levd plats och barnens erfarenheter utomhus som en del av ett kontinuum av skoldagen. Den andra studien fokuserade barnens visioner om framtiden och belyste hur barnen relaterar till tiden genom moraliska, tidsliga och rumsliga distanser. Barnens visioner om framtiden är nödvändiga att belysa i ESD med tanke på aspekter av rättvisa gentemot kommande generationer. I den tredje studien genomfördes fokusgruppsintervjuer med lärare som deltog i ett projekt om ESD. Studien belyste lärares institutionella förutsättningar för att jobba med ESD och deras förståelse av miljömedvetenhet. Studien visade att hållbar utvecklings många gånger motsägelsefulla budskap ersattes med mer konventionella miljöfrågor i undervisningen. Samtliga tre studier visade på behovet av att koppla samman ESD med barnens levda erfarenheter och lokala frågor, men också att lyfta fram spänningar mellan det lokala och det globala. Groundwater, a key part of the hydrological cycle, is under increasing pressure from different land uses and changing climate. However, less attention has been paid to integrated groundwater management than surface waters. This thesis combined hydrological and socio-economic research for the case study of the Rokua esker aquifer in order to update current concepts of groundwater management. The Rokua area contains groundwater-dependent lakes and a periodic water level decline has raised concerns about the future of these lakes. Peatland drainage in the vicinity of the aquifer has been accused of changing the aquifer conditions. Groundwater discharge from the esker aquifer to drained peatland was studied to identify relevant hydrological processes for groundwater-surface water interactions. The results revealed a connection between the aquifer and the peatland whereby groundwater can enter the ditches through seepage or preferential flow. Modeling was used to determine critical factors in the management of the esker aquifer-peatland system. The results showed that climate and land use can affect esker groundwater, while peatland drainage in the vicinity can have similar impacts to groundwater abstraction and drought. Peatland restoration by filling in drainage ditches could possibly restore the aquifer groundwater levels. However, for the Rokua aquifer, which will possibly experience less severe dry periods in the future, extensive drainage restoration is currently too major, uncertain, and expensive a measure relative to the expected benefits. Multi-criteria decision analysis was used to identify ways of facilitating stakeholder involvement and learning in groundwater management. The results obtained with this participatory process confirmed that it can foster learning on complicated groundwater issues and collaboration in a process encompassing disputes and diverse interests. The decision analysis process led to the initiation of dialogue on more integrate, Tiivistelmä Pohjaveteen, hydrologisen kierron avainosaan, kohdistuu kasvavia paineita eri maankäytön muodoista ja ilmastonmuutoksesta. Pohjaveden hallintaan ei kuitenkaan ole kiinnitetty tarvittavaa huomiota. Tässä väitöstyössä yhdistettiin hydrologista ja sosioekonomista tutkimusta Rokuan harjualueella pohjaveden hallintakonseptin päivittämiseksi. Rokuan alueella on useita pohjavedestä riippuvaisia järviä, joiden vedenpinta on kausittain laskenut voimakkaasti. Pintojen lasku on kasvattanut paikallisten huolta järvien tilasta. Harjua ympäröivät metsäojitetut turvemaat, ja ojituksia on syytetty pohjaveden tilan ja sitä kautta myös järvien tilan heikkenemisestä. Työn ensimmäisessä osassa tutkittiin pohjaveden hydrologisia purkautumisprosesseja harjun pohjavesiesiintymästä ojitetulle suoalueelle. Tulokset osoittivat hydraulisen yhteyden akviferin ja turvemaan välillä: pohjavesi pääsi purkautumaan metsäojiin joko suotautumalla tai turpeen kaksoishuokoisuusrakenteiden kautta. Seuraavassa vaiheessa työtä pohjavesimallinnusta käytettiin määrittämään kriittisiä pohjaveden tilaan vaikuttavia tekijöitä pohjavesi-turvemaa-systeemissä. Mallinnustulosten perusteella niin ilmasto kuin maankäyttökin vaikuttavat kumpikin suoraan pohjaveden pinnankorkeuden tilaan. Turvemaiden ojituksilla pohjavesialueella voi olla samoja vaikutuksia pohjaveden pinnankorkeuden tasoihin kuin pohjaveden otolla tai kuivilla kausilla. Turvemaiden ennallistaminen ojia täyttämällä voi osittain palauttaa vedenpinnan tasoja pohjavesialueella. Rokuan harjualueen tapauksessa suuren mittakaavan oja-alueiden ennallistaminen todettiin kuitenkin liian epävarmaksi ja kalliiksi toimenpiteeksi hyötyihin nähden, varsinkin jos kuivien kausien vaikutus suurilla harjualueilla heikkenee tulevaisuudessa sademäärien kasvun myötä. The construction of human-controlled watercourses to meet the need for hydroelectric power has substantially changed freshwater ecosystems, as well as the cultural dynamics of local communities along the Kemi River. At the moment there are 21 hydropower plants in the Kemi River basin, and further building is still topical. The construction of hydropower plants gave benefits but it also caused damages to the people living along the Kemi River. It was a deathblow to salmon migration. The alteration of the river has radically changed the water environment, the landscape and the usage of the river environment. The processed conflicts and paid compensations are always connected to economic losses, but the river has also many other aspects and meanings from the viewpoint of a riverman. The planning and building of hydroelectric plants took place at the same time with other significant events in northern Finland. The rise of the forestry industry, the Second World War, post-war reconstruction and structural changes in society framed the electrification of northern rivers. The transformation from an agrarian society to a service and information society happened unusually fast in Finland. It involved every aspect of local people’s lives, as the physical environment, local culture, social relations, means of income and the surrounding society changed in a short period of time. In my research I examine the changes caused by the electrification of the Kemi River in their temporal and spatial context. The focus is on the perspectives of local people and their personal relationships with the environment, but on the other hand also on the power relations within various actor groups. From my interview data I have identified four different adaptation strategies: compliant builders, those in denial, resigned bystanders and opposing resisters. These strategies may be found overlapping in the stories of the interviewees. Local residents have had an opportunity to realign thems, Tiivistelmä Kemijoen ensimmäinen voimalaitos valmistui vuonna 1949 sodanjälkeisen voimakkaan sähköntarpeen sanelemana. Kemijoen valuma-alueella on nyt yhteensä 21 voimalaitosta, ja jatkorakentaminen on yhä ajankohtainen asia. Vesivoimarakentaminen aiheutti hyötyjen lisäksi myös vahinkoa jokivarren asukkaille. Joen rakentaminen esti vaelluskalojen nousun jokiin ja muutti vesiympäristöä, maisemaa ja joen käyttöä voimakkaasti. Kemijoen kalakorvauskiista lienee tunnetuin rakentamisen aiheuttama konflikti, mutta myös muita ristiriitoja, pettymyksiä ja vahinkoja on paljon. Käsitellyt ristiriidat liittyvät aina taloudellisiin menetyksiin. Joella on sen rannalla asujalle kuitenkin myös muita kuin taloudellisia merkityksiä. Samanaikaisesti voimalaitostöiden kanssa käynnistyi yhteiskunnallinen rakennemuutos, joka tapahtui Suomessa poikkeuksellisen myöhään ja nopeasti. Muutos löi läpi koko elämänalan, kun fyysinen ympäristö, paikalliskulttuuri, sosiaaliset suhteet, toimeentulo ja yhteiskunta muuttuivat lyhyessä ajassa. Vesivoimarakentaminen vauhditti jokivarsien modernisaatiota entisestään, eikä nopea muutos tarjonnut asukkaille yhtä pitkää sopeutumisaikaa kuin muualla. Käsittelen tutkimuksessani vesivoimarakentamisen aiheuttamia muutoksia Kemijoen vesistöalueella. Tarkastelen muutosta paikallisten asukkaiden näkökulmasta sekä sidottuna rakentamisajan historialliseen ja tilalliseen kontekstiin. Tutkimuksen keskiössä on paikallisen asukkaan henkilökohtainen ympäristösuhde mutta toisaalta myös eri toimijaryhmien väliset ja sisäiset valtasuhteet. Jaan aineistosta esille tulleet jokivarren asukkaiden sopeutumisstrategiat neljään kategoriaan: rakentajiin, selänkääntäjiin, alistujiin ja vastustajiin. Tilanteesta riippuen suhtautumistapoja saattoi ilmetä limittäisesti, ja ne saattoivat olla keskenään myös ristiriidassa. Early motion is crucial for tendon healing and functional results after flexor tendon repair in the fingers. Motion, however, causes stress in the repair site, which can result in failure of the repair. A flexor tendon repair is made with fine calibre sutures, which sets exceptional requirements for the suture materials used in flexor tendon repair. Nitinol (nickel-titanium alloy) is a shape memory alloy, which can exist in two temperature-dependent forms, soft martensite and stiff austenite. It is possible to fabricate a nitinol wire that is soft and pliable, yet has high tensile strength. It also has excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, it is a potential candidate flexor tendon repair suture material. This study evaluates biomechanical aspects of martensite nitinol wire as a flexor tendon repair suture material. The study hypothesis was that nitinol wire improves the strength of the repairs compared with the repairs made with conventional suture materials. It was found that nitinol core repairs and circumferential repairs performed significantly better when compared with repairs made with commonly used braided polyester and polypropylene of equal calibre. To further optimise the performance of the nitinol wire in tendon surgery, two experimental models were developed to study the suture-tendon interface. The aim was to prevent pull-out of the suture loop so that surgeons could have full advantage of the tensile strength of the nitinol suture. First, it was tested whether it is possible to improve the suture’s ability to grip the tendon tissue by changing the suture type from monofilament to multifilament. Multifilament suture loops reached higher pull-out strength when compared with round monofilament loops when a locking loop was used. Subsequently, the grip of four different previously reported core repair loops was tested. Based on their failure mechanism, two novel loops were developed. The novel loops demonstrated superior ability to grip the tendo, Tiivistelmä Varhainen korjauksen jälkeinen aktiivinen kuntoutus on osoittautunut hyödylliseksi jänteen paranemiselle. Tässä tutkimuksessa kokeiltiin martensiittisen nitinolilangan käyttöä jänteen ydinompeleena ja pintaompeleena. Olettamuksena oli, että nitinolilangalla saadaan kestävämpiä korjauksia kuin nykyään käytössä olevilla langoilla. Tulosten mukaan nitinolilangalla tehdyt korjaukset olivat kestävämpiä, kun niitä verrattiin saman paksuiseen punottuun polyesteriin ja polypropyleeniin. Lisäksi kehitimme kaksi mallia, joiden tarkoituksena oli parantaa nitinolilankasilmukan pitoa jännekudoksesta. Tarkoituksena oli löytää keinoja, joilla langan otetta jännekudoksesta voidaan parantaa ja langan hyvät vetolujuusominaisuudet pääsevät oikeuksiinsa. Ensin muutimme langan muotoa perinteisestä yksisäikeisestä pyöreästä monisäikeiseen muotoon. Monisäikeisen langan läpileikkausvoima oli huomattavasti suurempi kuin yksisäikeisen pyöreän langan. Ero oli havaittavissa vain, kun käytettiin lukitsevaa silmukkaa. Tämän jälkeen testasimme neljän perinteisesti käytetyn korjaustekniikan silmukan pitokykyä ja tulosten perusteella kehitimme kaksi uutta silmukkaa. Työssä kehitetyt silmukat pitivät kiinni jänteestä huomattavasti paremmin kuin perinteiset silmukat. Työssä kehitetyillä silmukoilla voidaan optimoida vahvojen ommelainemateriaalien suorituskyky jännekirurgiassa.

The research investigates how student agency is inscribed as challenging or as misbehaviour in schools. The purpose is to open up and enable alternative ways of interpreting student agency. The empirical part of the research is based on reflexive ethnography and narrative methodology. The data is comprised of narrative and thematic interviews conducted during a period of 3 years (2006–2009), and 4 months of ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the autumn of 2008. The context for analyzing the meanings inscribed in student agency is a northern Finnish village school. In the villagers’ narrations, the research villages were presented as centres of the people’s lives, dynamic even in their quietude, and life in the villages was presented as an active choice. These stories challenge the national representations that tend to derive from the discourse of social exclusion. These societal discourses ‘other’ the life in northern villages and direct children, through education, concretely, socio-culturally, and emotionally away from their villages towards southern cities. Based on the fieldwork and applying Mihail Bakhtin’s dialogism and interactionist approach to emotions, I find that the meanings inscribed in student agency are determined dialogically. The meanings and emotions with which student agency is inscribed in a particular situation is, thereby, not determined by the students but come from the broader social, cultural, and political contexts, and the histories of those involved in the dialogue. Thereby, for instance “bad behaviour” cannot be improved simply by targeting the student or by changing student behaviour. This derives from the fact that any action, for example smashing potatoes, can end up carrying historical, political, social, and cultural meanings, and thus, any action can become inscribed as contesting behaviour. I conclude that contesting behaviour of a student does not cause as much as it performs challenging emotions that derive from broade, Tiivistelmä Tarkastelen tutkimuksessa, miten oppilaan toiminta saa merkityksen haastavana tai huonona käytöksenä koulussa. Tavoitteenani on avata ja mahdollistaa vaihtoehtoisten merkitysten näkeminen oppilaan toiminnalle. Tutkimuksen empiirinen osa nojautuu refleksiiviseen etnografiseen ja narratiiviseen metodologiaan, ja aineistona on käytetty haastatteluaineistoa 3 vuoden ajalta (2006–2009) sekä hieman yli neljän kuukauden mittaista kouluetnografiaa syksyllä 2008. Oppilaan toimijuuden tarkastelun kontekstina on pohjoinen pienkylän koulu. Kyläläisten omissa kertomuksissa kylät näyttäytyvät hiljetessäänkin dynaamisina elämän keskuksina, ja eläminen kylissä aktiivisena valintana. Nämä kertomukset haastavat valtakunnalliset representaatiot, jotka rakentuvat usein syrjäytymispuheelle. Syrjäytymispuhe toiseuttaa elämää pohjoisissa pienkylissä ja ohjaa koulutuksen kautta lapsia konkreettisesti, kulttuurisesti ja kokemuksellisesti pois kylästään, kohti etelää ja kaupunkeja. Mihail Bakhtinin dialogismia soveltaen ja kenttätyöhön pohjautuen totean, että oppilaan toiminnan saamat merkitykset ja siihen liittyvät tunteet määrittyvät dialogisesti. Toiminnan saamat merkitykset ja siihen liitetyt tunteet eivät siis ole oppilaan omassa hallinnassa vaan tulevat laajemmasta sosiaalisesta, poliittisesta, kulttuurisesta ja yhteiskunnallisesta kehyksestä sekä dialogin osapuolten erillisistä ja yhteisestä historiasta. Näin ollen, esimerkiksi ”huonoa käytöstä” ei voida parantaa yksinkertaisesti kohdistamalla toimenpiteitä oppilaaseen tai tämän käytökseen. Tämä johtuu siitä, että lähes mikä hyvänsä toiminta, tutkimuksessa muun muassa perunan soseuttaminen, voi päätyä kantamaan historiallisia, poliittisia, sosiaalisia ja kulttuurisia merkityksiä ja tulla siten merkityksi haastavaksi käytökseksi. This thesis addresses the conceptual and institutional framework of current planning and assessment processes for large-scale energy projects in Finland. In particular, recent proposals for nuclear and hydro power projects are described and theoretically discussed in regard to the procedural capacities that allow for public participation. It is argued that because of ill-defined purposes of public participation and an institutional bias towards conflict-free siting processes, opportunities for participation have little relevance in terms of the overall aim of rendering decisions legitimate. Rather, participatory procedures exhibit a strong ritualistic character within a legalistic atmosphere, thereby excluding political argument whenever citizens are encouraged to engage. A normative account of the welfare society — expressed in Finland through the notion of the overall good in energy decision making — advocates reflection on current practices against the background of conceptualisation of political engagement in planning and decision making. In addition, it is argued that despite efforts to strengthen local government and administration, public institutions appear to refrain from engaging in the planning process. This vacant space is filled by private institutions, though these lack a political mandate for their activities. Thus, this thesis argues that instead of increasing the legitimacy of procedures and decisions, the opposite is taking place through a weakening of public institutions and representative functions. More generally, it is emphasised that the participatory imperative has to be considered a paradigmatic shift that requires reflection. The thesis discusses the influence of academic scholars on the formulation of a “participatory turn” that has produced an understanding of underlying expectations towards participating citizens in planning and assessment processes. Based on a review of theoretical outlines of reasonable and rational discourse, Tiivistelmä Tämä väitöskirja käsittelee laajojen energiahankkeiden nykyisten suunnittelu- ja arviointiprosessien käsitteellistä ja institutionaalista rakennetta. Erityisesti kuvataan ja tarkastellaan teoreettisesti viimeaikaisia ydin- ja vesivoimahanke-esityksiä suhteessa menettelytapojen kykyyn ottaa huomioon kansalaisten vaikutusmahdollisuudet. Osoitetaan, että epämääräisten julkisen osallistumisen tavoitteiden ja yksipuolisen sijoitusprosessien konfliktittomuutta suosivan institutionaalisen suhtautumisen vuoksi osallistumistilaisuuksilla on vain vähän merkitystä päätösten legitimoinnin tavoitteen kannalta. Legalistisen ilmapiirin vallitessa osallistavat menettelytavat näyttäytyvät pikemminkin luonteeltaan ritualistisina, ja tähän liittyen poliittiset argumentit jätetään huomiotta aina, kun kansalaisia rohkaistaan vaikuttamaan. Normatiivinen kuvaus hyvinvointiyhteiskunnasta — joka Suomessa ilmaistaan energiapäätöksenteossa yleisen hyvän käsityksen kautta — vaatii nykyisten käytäntöjen uudelleenarviointia suunnitteluun ja päätöksentekoon liittyvän poliittisen sitoutumisen käsitteellistämisen taustaa vasten. Lisäksi osoitetaan, että huolimatta yrityksistä vahvistaa paikallista hallintoa, julkiset instituutiot näyttävät olevan haluttomia sitoutumaan suunnitteluprosesseihin. Tämän vapaan tilan täyttävät yksityiset instituutiot, vaikka niiden toiminnalta puuttuu poliittinen mandaatti. Tiivistelmä Tämä tutkimus on osa CHISU -hanketta. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on kuvailla ja ymmärtää kiinalaisten ja suomalaisten yritysten välisen tilaus-toimitusketjun toimintaa sekä yritysten kansainvälistymistä. Tutkimuksen keskeiset teemat ovat Suomen ja Kiinan välinen liiketoiminta, tilaus-toimitusketjun hallinta sekä kansainvälistymisprosessit. Tutkimus suoritetaan tapaustutkimuksen keinoin, jossa tapauksina ovat neljä suomalaista pk-yritystä. Teoriaosio keskittyy Suomen ja Kiinan väliseen kauppaan, tilaus-toimitusketjuun ja sen hallintaan sekä kansainvälistymiseen. Teorian tarkoituksena on rakentaa viitekehys empiirisen aineiston keräämisen, käsittelyn ja ymmärryksen tueksi. Empiirisen aineiston keräämisessä käytetään teorioiden pohjalta laadittuja haastattelukysymyksiä. Empiirisen aineiston lähteinä toimivat neljä suomalaista pk-yritystä, joista kustakin haastatellaan yhtä henkilöä, joka on hyvin selvillä yrityksen Kiinasta tuontiin, tilaus-toimitusketjuun sekä kansainvälistymiseen liittyvistä asioista. Tutkimustulokset esitetään empiriaosiossa yrityskohtaisesti jakamalla ne edellä mainittuihin tutkimuksen aihealueisiin. Empiriaosion lopuksi esitettävissä käytännön johtopäätöksissä kootaan yhteen haastatteluiden keskeisin anti. Tutkimustuloksissa esitetään kattavat kuvaukset Kiinasta tuonnin hyödyistä, Kiinan ja Suomen välisestä tilaus-toimitusketjusta sekä tapausyritysten kansainvälistymisestä. Tärkeimpänä hyötynä esille nousi hankintakustannusten edullisuus. Tilaustoimitusketjun ja sen hallinnan kohdalla yrityksissä korostettiin lähes yksimielisesti yhteistyön ja kiinalaisten nopean reagoinnin merkitystä toiminnan onnistumisen ja jatkuvuuden kannalta. Kansainvälistymisestä puhuttaessa kaikkien tapausyritysten tavoitteena on lisätä kansainvälisiä liiketoimiaan. This study analyses environmental concern in the Komi Republic from the contextual perspective. The main research data consisted of thematic interviews of industrial workers (n = 114), teachers (n = 30), administration staff (n = 33) in the towns of Usinsk and Vorkuta in the Northern Komi Republic. In addition, the in-depth thematic interviews of state administrators, scientists and NGO actors are analysed as well as the survey study conducted in several regions in the republic. As a broad theoretical frame the study uses the context model, in which environmental concern in everyday life is interpreted at five closely connected levels. The study consists of four previously published articles, one submitted manuscript and a concluding chapter. As the major theoretical and methodological idea the study presents two different environments: a life-world of the individual, where environmental changes are perceived and experienced in a framework of everyday life, and secondly, global environmentalism’s Environment, which is nowadays in Western discourses viewed as a globe. This study focuses on the life-world perspective, and asks how these two environments communicate with each other in the particular contexts of the Komi Republic. In general, environmental issues hold a low profile compared with other social problems in the Komi Republic. However, the citizens of the Komi Republic are concerned about so-called ’brown‘ environmental issues; that is issues of pollution and waste disposal in their immediate environs. The public’s environmental concerns are mostly about ’ecological risks‘ — the health and well-being implications of environmental degradation. Environmental problems are regarded as part societal transformation. This ’brown‘ environmentalism is understandable in Russia since approximately 60 million Russians now live in zones with adverse environmental situations. Green or global issues are not much discussed among the public of Russia. The findings s, Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan ympäristötietoisuutta ja -huolta Komin tasavallassa kontekstuaalisesta näkökulmasta. Tärkein osa tutkimusaineistosta koostuu teollisuustyöntekijöiden (n = 114), opettajien (n = 30) ja yritys- ja julkisen hallinnon edustajien (n = 33) teemahaastatteluista Usinskin ja Vorkutan kaupungeissa tasavallan pohjoisosassa. Lisäksi työssä on analysoitu valtion virkamiesten, tutkijoiden sekä kansalaisjärjestöjen toimijoiden teemahaastatteluja sekä tasavallan eri alueilla tehdyn kyselytutkimuksen tuloksia. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnetään kontekstimallia, jossa ympäristötietoisuutta tarkastellaan viiden toisiinsa limittyvän tason kautta. We synthesize aspects from engineering, natural and social sciences to better understand the role of wood substitution in CO2 mitigation.We also formulate some recommendations on filling knowledge gaps that could be useful for policy making regarding how wood substitution could be further expanded. There are sufficient wood resources to substantially increase the use of wood for material and energy purposes. However, a number of factors hinder a wider use of wood for energy and material purposes. Furthermore, an analysis of wood substitution is a very complex issue, since the substitution influencing factors are to be found along the entire wood supply chain and involve several industries, socio-economic and cultural aspects, traditions, price dynamics, and structural and technical change. To improve the knowledge about wood as a substitute for other resources and the implications, it would be helpful to better integrate research from different disciplines on the subject and to cover different scales from a project to an economy-wide level.

This reports presents a manual of the CO2FIX V 2.0 model. CO2FIX V 2.0 is a simple bookkeeping model that converts volumetric net annual increment data (and additional parameters) to annual carbon stocks and fluxes of the forest ecosystem-soil-wood products chain. It calculates on the hectare scale with time steps of one year. This Version 2.0 is a hectare scale model which was improved on the ability to simulate multi-species and uneven aged stands in multiple cohorts (e.g. selective tropical selective logging systems, and agroforestry systems); the ability to parametrize the growth also by stand density; the ability to deal with inter cohort competition; harvesting, allocation, processing lines, and end-of-life disposal of harvested wood; soil dynamics; the ability to deal with a wider variety of forest types including agro-forestry systems, selective logging systems, and post harvesting mortality; output viewing charts.

Phenotypic and genotypic diversity of the flagellin gene (fliC) of Clostridium difficile was studied in 47 isolates from various origins belonging to the serogroups A, B, C, D, F, G, H, I, K, X, and S3. Electron microscopy revealed 17 nonflagellated strains and 30 flagellated strains, PCR and reverse transcription-PCR demonstrated that the flagellin gene was present in all strains and that the fliC gene was expressed in both flagellated and nonflagellated strains. Southern blotting showed the presence of only one copy of the gene and three different hybridization patterns. DNA sequence analysis of fliC from the strains belonging to serogroups C, D, and X, representative of each profile, disclosed great variability in the central domain, whereas the N- and C-terminal domains were conserved. The variability of the flagellin gene fliC was further studied in the isolates by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Nine different RFLP groups were identified (I to IX), among which three (I, VII, and VIII) corresponded to numerous serogroups whereas the six others (II, III, IV, V, VI, and IX) belonged to a single serogroup, Flagellin gene RFLP analysis could constitute an additional typing method employable in conjunction with other typing methods currently available.

In the COST E21-Action ""Contribution of Forests and Forestry to Mitigate Greenhouse Effects"", emphasis is put on the quantification of carbon storage in the forest ecosystems and on the understanding of linkages between human activities and climate change, particularly the role of forests and forestry. COST E21 integrates natural, socio-economic as well as methodological aspects relevant for reporting under the unitéd Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol, as well as decision-making at the European level in the context of carbon mitigation in forest ecosystems. This Action is a pioneering attempt to co-ordinate research: to exchange experience and knowledge towards standardised greenhouse gas inventory accounting for forests over Europe. It will match, within four years (1999-2003), both scientific and political agendas. This paper gives a background presentation of the COST E21-Action, its work plan and its clearing house. It finally gives the outline of country specific information to the COST E21 as presented in this issue in a standard format.

The aim of this work was to determine the extent of land ownership by companies in Northern Finland over the period 1885–1939, what companies acquired land, what prices they paid for it and the reasons for them doing this. Attention is also paid to the general and regional causes of these sales of land. The perspective adopted is largely that of the industrial sector, so that the economic and social repercussions are deemed to lie beyond the scope of this work, and even the immediate consequences of the purchases of land are touched on only in passing. The timber companies were most active in acquiring land in 1900–1920, over which period their holdings increased more than 6-fold (from 79 690 ha to 513 450 ha). In 1915 the companies owned 3.6% of the total surface area of Northern Finland, 8.8% of the private land and 5.7% of the total number of farm or forest properties. The land holdings of the timber companies decreased from 1920 onwards and became established at around 450 000 ha in the 1930s. This took place through the companies releasing land for settlement purposes, either voluntarily or under the Land Restoration Law of 1925, seeking in this way to rid themselves of land that was of no use to them. The chief focus of purchases of land by the timber companies in Northern Finland was in Kainuu, where they owned a total of 292 820 ha at the peak in this trend, in 1920. Over the period 1915–1939 about 60% of the land owned by such companies in Northern Finland was situated in Kainuu, and even by 1915 they had acquired about 27% of all the privately-owned land in the region. The main reason for the timber companies’ interest in purchasing land was the expansion in sawn timber production, which meant that the volume of timber required for this purpose increased from 2.6 million stems in 1870 to 34 million by 1910. At the same time the pulp and paper industries were also stepping up production. The aim of the first section was to develop a method to assess carbon budget for tree biomass at ecoregional level in Siberia. Tree biomass carbon budgets contain estimates on the initial amounts of carbon in the whole tree biomass, as well as its dynamics. The calculation method developed based on the structure of the Russian forest database at IIASA and available models describing tree growth and biomass allocation in Siberia. Calculated litter production is used as input for separate calculations on the soil organic matter carbon budget (Liski, 1997). Stand level analyses showed that the developed method describes vegetation carbon budget in a plausible manner. The stand level analyses are the platform for regional assessments. There are, however, several matters that should be taken into account in the regional assessments. These relate to stand structure, description of stand replacing disturbances, and availability of data. In the second section, different models describing the dynamics of organic C in forest soils were developed and then compared. The model judged to describe the dynamics of soil C in the most realistic way contains five compartments for different litter and three for soil organic matter (the so called soil C model). Temperature was considered the most important climatic factor that regulates the decomposition in boreal forests. The effective temperature sum with a +5 degree C threshold was chosen to describe the temperature impact on the decomposition. The application of the developed models was tested on the issues of impacts of species, harvesting intervals and harvesting residues left on the site. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd Background: Recent discovery of mechanosensitive Piezo receptors in trigeminal ganglia suggested the novel molecular candidate for generation of migraine pain. However, the contribution of Piezo channels in migraine pathology was not tested yet. Therefore, in this study, we explored a potential involvement of Piezo channels in peripheral trigeminal nociception implicated in generation of migraine pain. Methods: We used immunohistochemistry, calcium imaging, calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) release assay and electrophysiology in mouse and rat isolated trigeminal neurons and rat hemiskulls to study action of various stimulants of Piezo receptors on migraine-related peripheral nociception. Results: We found that essential (35%) fraction of isolated rat trigeminal neurons responded to chemical Piezo1 agonist Yoda1 and about a half of Yoda1 positive neurons responded to hypo-osmotic solution (HOS) and a quarter to mechanical stimulation by focused ultrasound (US). In ex vivo hemiskull preparation, Yoda1 and HOS largely activated persistent nociceptive firing in meningeal branches of trigeminal nerve. By using our novel cluster analysis of pain spikes, we demonstrated that 42% of fibers responded to Piezo1 agonist and 20% of trigeminal fibers were activated by Yoda1 and by capsaicin, suggesting expression of Piezo receptors in TRPV1 positive peptidergic nociceptive nerve fibers. Consistent with this, Yoda1 promoted the release of the key migraine mediator CGRP from hemiskull preparation. Conclusion: Taken together, our data suggest the involvement of mechanosensitive Piezo receptors, in particular, Piezo1 subtype in peripheral trigeminal nociception, which provides a new view on mechanotransduction in migraine pathology and suggests novel molecular targets for anti-migraine medicine.
