President Roosevelt tells John Willis to tell Tiedt to come and see him when he is in Washington, D.C., and to show this letter to William Loeb if he has any difficulty getting through to see him. Roosevelt wishes he had been there when Willis got the white wolf, and asks if it "cut up the dogs much."

President Roosevelt thanks John Willis Baer, President of Occidental College, for his letter and assures him that he will enjoy reading the inaugural address.

President Roosevelt encloses a letter from US Forest Service Chief Gifford Pinchot and tells John Willis he cannot fulfill Willis's request without an act of Congress. Roosevelt comments on his desire to go bear hunting and recounts his recent turkey hunting.

John Willis has been trying to locate bear for President Roosevelt to hunt. Willis's ranch is at Roosevelt's disposal and he is welcome to hunt at any time.

Theodore Roosevelt recalls meeting "Whistling John" Willis when Willis had lost everything in a fire. He congratulates Willis on making his "way up" in life and compares Willis's youth in the West to the Vikings. Roosevelt intends to visit the Panama Exposition and would be pleased to stop in Glasgow, Montana, to see Willis. He agrees that cattle country is turning into farming country and is glad that Willis is interested in protecting the mountain sheep and blacktail (mule) deer.

President Roosevelt is glad to see John Willis excel at ranching and is honored that Willis offered him a stock in the ranch. However, while Roosevelt is in office, he will not be able to own any of the ranch. He would like to visit.

President Roosevelt is pleased that his old friend, John Willis, is standing by him. If he is reelected, Roosevelt requests that he attend the inauguration and have dinner with him at the White House. Roosevelt wishes they could go for a hunt but laments that "he could not begin to do the things we used to do in the old days."

President Roosevelt thanks John Willis for the letter and will always cherish their experience together. Roosevelt will attempt to find someone impartial for the judgeship.

John Willis sends his holiday wishes to President Roosevelt and informs him of his current happenings. He tells Roosevelt that he no longer hunts, but recalls the first time they met, when guns were his only friends. He also mentions an old friend, Tiedt, who is on his way east and would like to visit with Roosevelt.

John Willis writes President Roosevelt that he will be voting for him in the upcoming elections and would be glad to lend his support in any way possible.

John Willis sends New Year's wishes to President Roosevelt and thanks him for instilling an "ambition to be something better." He suggests that a proper candidate for the Montana United States District Judge needs to be favorable to either of the two big copper companies. Willis had a successful fall season of hunting and wishes Roosevelt could have joined him.

John Willis invites Alexander Lambert and "little Ted Roosevelt" to come out to Montana in the fall to hunt. He invited President Roosevelt before he knew of President McKinley's death, but Roosevelt wrote he could not come. Willis also invites Lambert's wife and friends. The only cost would be the $20 license.

John Willis has been scouting a large bear that he thought President Roosevelt might be able to hunt. Upon returning to town, he heard of the news of Roosevelt's succession to the presidency. Willis is sad that the presidency came to Roosevelt under such difficult circumstances. He understands that Roosevelt can no longer make a trip west. Willis is doing well in Montana and has a ranch with a "good start of cattle."

President Roosevelt tells John Willis and his wife, Waltrene Willis, to come to the inauguration. The president also wishes he could get after "that bear," but does not believe it is a possibility.

President Roosevelt agrees that this is the last time John Willis will write to a president, unless Willis makes friends with Roosevelt's successors. Roosevelt sent on the autograph to Marion Working as requested. Roosevelt thinks he will have a good time in Africa, but wishes he could hunt wolves and coyotes with Willis.

John Willis supposes this will be the last chance to write President Roosevelt as president and requests Roosevelt write to Marion Working, a young girl who asked for his autograph. Willis has been hunting wolves and coyotes, and hopes Roosevelt enjoys his trip to Africa.

President Roosevelt has asked the Bureau of Reclamation to take immediate action in the "Milk River matter," and has authorized them to go ahead with the current scheme, even though it will probably cost more money than he has previously felt warranted.

President Roosevelt wishes Dr. Baer luck in his term as President of Occidental College.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to President Baer of Occidental College to inform him that he has asked President Scherer to contact Governor Johnson to see if he can get to Pasadena without conflicting the arrangements he is making for Roosevelt in Los Angeles.

In this dissertation, dynamic force measurement methodologies are developed and implemented for use in hypersonic wind tunnel testing. The chief application is implementation into Arnold Engineering Development Complex's Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9. The Sum of Weighted Accelerations Technique, Time Domain Deconvolution Method, and Frequency Domain Inverse Method are of particular interest for this study due to their implementation feasibility within Tunnel 9. The formulation of each "conventional" method is presented in its most basic or commonly used form. Then several modifications are made to improve the results of the various methods. Much of this work focuses on the specific alterations performed on each method and the consequences of each change. To improve the Sum of Weighted Accelerations Technique, modal separation and a damping matrix are added to the formulation. This allows for higher frequency accuracy and successful reconstructions on highly damped setups. A novel Time Domain Deconvolution Method is formulated in this dissertation which exhibits several advantages over the typical time domain approaches. Examples include elimination of inversion regularization, smooth reconstructions, and improved computational efficiency via response segmentation. The Frequency Domain Inverse Method was reformulated to solve directly for the frequency response function. This direct solution also allows for the use of multiple calibration tests during solution which improves accuracy. Each alteration is validated on numerical, bench top, and wind tunnel systems to provide a full theory to implementation understanding. Linked spring-mass-damper models are used for all of the numerical investigations with additive Gaussian noise and are used to draw early conclusions about each method and alteration. Bench top studies are performed on three separate support structures to build confidence in the methods on a more complex, experimental system. Finally, data obtained by

Using proteomic techniques, a site of deamidation involving glutamine 92 has been characterized and its time course established. The proportion of deamidation increased from birth to teen-age years and then plateaud. Ceamidation at this site increased again in the eighth decade of life. There was no significant difference in the extent of deamidation between cataract and age-matched normal lenses. Glng2 is located in the linker region between the two domains, and the introduction of a negative charge at this site may alter the interaction between the two regions of the protein. Gln170, which is located in another unstructured part of ..,S crystallin, showed a similar deamidation profile to that of Gln92. As the other Gin residues in p-sheet regions of ..,S crystallin appear to remain as amides, modification of Gln92 and Gln170 thus conforms to a pattem whereby deamidation is localized to the unstructured regions of long-lived proteins.

East Africa, a region in Africa south of the Sahara, is faced with many environmental and urban problems due to development and population growth impacting on the land, vegetation and wildlife. This region, at present, does not have its own trained manpower able to plan and manage the natural resources but also to minimize man's impact on these resources in order to achieve sustainable development in the region. The thesis of this study is that a regional institute of resource planning and management be established in one of the three countries in the region to meet this pressing need.
