This study aimed to assess the reliability of Strava measurements when manipulating segment distance and running velocity. The tests were carried out on a flat and straight segment. Ten male regular runners were equipped with a Garmin® Forerunner 945 watch and ran over a distance of 1 km of four increasing speeds: 1.39, 2.78, 4.17 and 5 m/s. Different reference positions were accurately determined in order to calculate time at 100 m, 200 m, 500 m, 700 m, and 1000 m. A bike with a wide angle camera was used to standardize the run pace and to record the entire run for reference measurements. Results show a high level of reliability with nearly perfect intra-class correlation (from .997 to 1) when data is analysed accordingly to the distance of the segment or to the running velocity. The validity is also very good with a small average bias (-0.25 s), a standard deviation of differences of 1.84 sec and the limit of agreement range from -3.86 to 3.35 sec. Regardless of the length of the segment, the actual performance of the runner is normally within +/- 2 seconds of the results given by the Strava application. In 95% of cases, the measurement error will be less than four seconds. The relative error is proportionally larger for short segments done at a fast pace. Further studies are needed to explore Strava segments reliability in other specific contexts.

ObjectivesBelgium enacted a COVID-19 pass, called Covid Safe Ticket (CST) during the Autumn-Winter 2021-2022. This study aimed to understand the reasons advanced by and expectations of those supporting this policy measureMethodsThis mixed method study was based on a voluntary online survey among 9,444 French-speaking residents in Belgium.ResultsMost respondents were not very supportive of COVID-19 passes, with only 617 respondents (7%) being favourable to the CST. Compared to other respondents, the pro-CST sample comprised more males, older people, people scared of Covid-19, people who trust anti-Covid vaccines, and highly educated people. A qualitative analysis enabled to identify the reasons why respondents supported the CST. Two lines of arguments were related to personal comfort (individual protection and means of ‘recovering freedom’) and two were related to collective protection (controlling the pandemic and incentivising vaccination). Pro-CST respondents also advanced some limits of the CST.ConclusionsThe expectations regarding COVID passes were high, diverse, and not entirely rational. Some contradictions and frustration emerged from respondents’ verbatims. We conclude that the CST might have exacerbated social divide in society. Malgré la simplicité apparente et l’emploi fréquent du terme fatigue dans la vie courante, celui-ci peut revêtir différentes significations. La notion de fatigue musculaire est définie comme étant une diminution transitoire et réversible de la capacité à produire une performance donnée (Enoka & Duchateau, 2008). Elle peut trouver son origine au niveau des systèmes nerveux et musculaire. Par exemple, il a été montré que la diminution de la performance (temps de maintien) repose probablement en partie sur des altérations localisées au niveau du système nerveux central qui limiteraient la durée de l’effort (Gandevia, 2001 ;Hunter et al. 2004). Aussi, la cinétique de récupération des facteurs nerveux après un exercice sous-maximal fatigant pourrait contribuer à réduire la performance lors de la réitération d’un effort (Cogiamanian et al. 2007). Dès lors, le développement de nouvelles stratégies visant à faciliter la récupération nerveuse s’avère particulièrement pertinent et il convient de s’interroger plus spécifiquement sur les effets potentiels de l’utilisation de la stimulation électrique transcrânienne par un courant continu de faible intensité (tDCS) pour contrecarrer le déficit nerveux observé. La tDCS est une méthode non-invasive qui modifie l’excitabilité neuronale pendant et après la période de stimulation (Nitsche & Paulus, 2000 ;Nitsche et al. 2003). Cette technique permet, par exemple, d’augmenter l’excitabilité des neurones corticaux des aires motrices (Nitsche et al. 2005) et de modifier l’excitabilité de réseaux neuronaux spinaux (Roche et al. 2009, 2011). MC is a complex biocultural attribute and therefore, its study requires a multi-sectoral, multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary approach. MC is a growing area of research, especially in children and adolescents due to its positive association with a plethora of health and developmental outcomes. Many questions, however, remain to be answered in this field of research, with regard to: (i) Health and Developmental-related Associations of MC; (ii) Assessment of MC; (iii) Prevalence and Trends of MC; (iv) Correlates and Determinants of MC; (v) MC Interventions, and (vi) Translating MC Research into Practice and Policy. This paper presents a narrative review of the literature, summarizing current knowledge, identifying key research gaps and presenting questions for future investigation on MC in children and adolescents. This is a collaborative effort from the International Motor Competence Network (IMCNetwork) a network of academics and researchers aiming to promote international collaborative research and knowledge translation in the expansive field of MC. The knowledge and deliverables generated by addressing and answering the aforementioned research questions on MC presented in this review have the potential to shape the ways in which researchers and practitioners promote MC and physical activity in children and adolescents across the world.

Une nouvelle méthode de musculation, appelée méthode 3/7, consistant à réaliser 5 séries en escalier (de 3 à 7 répétitions) avec une charge de 70 % d’une répétition maximale (1RM) espacées d’un temps de récupération court (15 secondes) s’avère plus efficace pour augmenter la force musculaire qu’une méthode classique (à nombre de répétitions constant) avec un temps de récupération long (150 secondes ;Laurent et coll. 2016). L’intérêt de cette méthode est de combiner l’utilisation de charges modérées tout en induisant une réponse métabolique importante (Penzer et coll. 2016). Au regard du gain de temps que procure cette méthode, elle pourrait être intégrée dans la préparation physique de sportifs, mais également de personnes prises en charge dans le cadre d’une revalidation.Dès lors, l’objectif général de ce travail de thèse a été d’étudier l’efficacité de la méthode 3/7 sur les gains de force et sur les adaptations musculaires et plus spécifiquement de mieux comprendre les facteurs responsables de celle-ci. A cet effet, trois principaux projets ont été élaborés. Le premier avait pour objectif d’optimiser l’efficacité de la méthode 3/7 en investiguant les gains de force maximale, ainsi que les adaptations neurophysiologiques et musculaires sous-jacentes suite à 12 semaines d’entrainement des muscles fléchisseurs du coude. Lors du deuxième projet, l’effet aigu de la méthode 3/7 sur les dommages musculaires, les réponses inflammatoires, hormonales, et métaboliques y compris celles sur le stress oxydant a été évalué à la suite d’une séance de renforcement musculaire composée de quatre exercices (le développé couché, l’extension de jambes à la presse inclinée, le tirage horizontal et la flexion plantaire). During the last two decades there have been growing interests on recommendations for children’s physical activity. The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the first global international recommendations for children in 2010, focusing on children and youth aged 5-17 year olds. The recommendations were based on the dose-response relationship between the frequency, duration, intensity, type and amount of physical activity needed for prevention of non-communicable diseases. There remains however, at time of writing, (2019) a gap in the recommendations, as the WHO did not offer global recommendations for those children under the age of 5 (early years). An international policy and practice analysis, (not previously undertaken), of ten sample countries, was completed of current national physical activity practices. Also an international comparison of early years’ education settings were examined, specifically for those under the age of 5, to investigate current curricula, as well as the qualifications, knowledge and understanding of those supporting children’s learning in different cultural contexts. The sample of ten countries (Belgium, China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, United Kingdom and United States of America) questioned whether the global daily physical activity recommendations (WHO, 2010) are costumed and used for to the early years’ age group on a national level or if they need to be adjusted. The analysis revealed that eight countries have developed their own national recommendations for children below the age of 5, while only two countries do not have any early years’ specific physical activity recommendations. National authorities seem to be the most common executive sources behind the recommendations. The content of physical activity for children under the age of 5, mostly included the total amount and intensity of physical activity. Thirty-six males (11–15 years old) performed a ballistic supine leg press test at five randomized loads (80%, 100%, 120%, 140%, and 160% body mass) on three separate occasions. Peak and mean force, power, velocity, and peak displacement were collected with a linear position transducer attached to the weight stack. Mean values at each load were used to calculate different regression lines and estimate maximal strength, force, velocity, and power. All variables were found reliable (change in the mean [CIM] ¼ -1 to 14%; coefficient of variation [CV] ¼ 3–18%; intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] ¼ 0.74–0.99), but were likely to benefit from a familiarization, apart from the unreliable maximal force/velocity ratio (CIM ¼ 0–3%; CV ¼ 23– 25%; ICC ¼ 0.35–0.54) and load at maximal power (CIM ¼ -1 to 2%; CV ¼ 10–13%; ICC ¼ 0.26– 0.61). Isoinertial force–velocity–power profiling and maximal strength in youth can be assessed after a familiarization session. Such profiling may provide valuable insight into neuromuscular capabilities during growth and maturation and may be used to monitor specific training adaptations.
