The permutation flow shop scheduling problem is one of the most studied operations research related problems. Literally, hundreds of exact and approximate algorithms have been proposed to optimise several objective functions. In this paper we address the total tardiness criterion, which is aimed towards the satisfaction of customers in a make-to-order scenario. Although several approximate algorithms have been proposed for this problem in the literature, recent contributions for related problems suggest that there is room for improving the current available algorithms. Thus, our contribution is twofold: First, we propose a fast beam-search-based constructive heuristic that estimates the quality of partial sequences without a complete evaluation of their objective function. Second, using this constructive heuristic as initial solution, eight variations of an iterated-greedy-based algorithm are proposed. A comprehensive computational evaluation is performed to establish the efficiency of our proposals against the existing heuristics and metaheuristics for the problem.

[EN]Iterated greedy algorithms belong to the class of stochastic local search methods. They are based on the simple and effective principle of generating a sequence of solutions by iterating over a constructive greedy heuristic using destruction and construction phases. This paper, first, presents an efficient randomized iterated greedy approach for the minimum weight dominating set problem, where—given a vertex-weighted graph—the goal is to identify a subset of the graphs’ vertices with minimum total weight such that each vertex of the graph is either in the subset or has a neighbor in the subset. Our proposed approach works on a population of solutions rather than on a single one. Moreover, it is based on a fast randomized construction procedure making use of two different greedy heuristics. Secondly, we present a hybrid algorithmic model in which the proposed iterated greedy algorithm is combined with the mathematical programming solver CPLEX. In particular, we improve the best solution provided by the iterated greedy algorithm with the solution polishing feature of CPLEX. The simulation results obtained on a widely used set of benchmark instances shows that our proposed algorithms outperform current state-of-the-art approaches.

As the interest of practitioners and researchers in scheduling in a multi-factory environment is growing, there is an increasing need to provide efficient algorithms for this type of decision problems, characterised by simultaneously addressing the assignment of jobs to different factories/workshops and their subsequent scheduling. Here we address the so-called distributed permutation flowshop scheduling problem, in which a set of jobs has to be scheduled over a number of identical factories, each one with its machines arranged as a flowshop. Several heuristics have been designed for this problem, although there is no direct comparison among them. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic which exploits the specific structure of the problem. The computational experience carried out on a well-known testbed shows that the proposed heuristic outperforms existing state-of-the-art heuristics, being able to obtain better upper bounds for more than one quarter of the problems in the testbed.

This paper deals with a realistic cyclic scheduling problem in the food industry environment in which parallel machines are considered to process perishable jobs with given release dates, due dates and deadlines. Jobs are subject to post-production shelf life limitation and must be delivered to retailers during the corresponding time window bounded by due dates and deadlines. Both early and tardy jobs are penalized by partial weighted earliness/tardiness functions and the overall problem is to provide a cyclic schedule of minimum cost. A mixed integer programming model is proposed and a heuristic solution beside an iterated greedy algorithm is developed to generate good and feasible solutions for the problem. The proposed MIP, heuristic and iterated greedy produce a series of solutions covering a wide range of cases from slow optimal solutions to quick and approximated schedules.

The problem of allocating a set of facilities in order to maximise the sum of the demands of the covered clients is known as the maximal covering location problem. In this work we tackle this problem by means of iterated greedy algorithms. These algorithms iteratively refine a solution by partial destruction and reconstruction, using a greedy constructive procedure. Iterated greedy algorithms have been applied successfully to solve a considerable number of problems. With the aim of providing additional results and insights along this line of research, this paper proposes two new iterated greedy algorithms that incorporate two innovative components: a population of solutions optimised in parallel by the iterated greedy algorithm, and an improvement procedure that explores a large neighbourhood by means of an exact solver.
