The 70th year of the IAU has been marked not only by the Covid-19 pandemic but by the geopolitical tension between the United States and China. After almost four decades of cooperation, which began in shared opposition to Soviet Russia and a shared interest in China’s modernisation, the leaders of each country have become strident critics of the other. The escalating war of words has led to disruptions in trade, communications and visas and now threatens the vast and fruitful cooperation between universities and researchers. Much is at stake. Many US universities are in China, such as Stanford with its state-of-the-art centre at Peking University and NYU with a branch campus in Shanghai. Chinese universities benefit from visits in both directions, from bench-marking using American partner templates and from the return of US-trained doctoral graduates. US-China links in science are focused on crucial areas like biomedicine and epidemiology, planetary science and ecology, engineering, materials, energy, cybernetics.

Detailed tests and analysis of ageing effects of high irradiation dose on Multi-Strip Multi-Gap Resistive Plate Counters based on low resistivity glass electrodes were performed. MSMGRPC efficiency and cluster size before irradiation are measured and compared with their values after irradiation in a high irradiation dose accessed at a multi-purpose irradiation facility of IFIN-HH based on $^{60}$Co source. The composition and properties of the deposited layers on the glass electrodes, studied based on a multitude of analysis methods, i.e. SEM, XPS, foil-ERDA, RBS, AFM and THz-TDS, are presented., Comment: 13 pages, 34 figures

The aim of this study was to investigate genetic variation as a factor in the development of renovascular hypertension in children. METHODS: In a cohort of 37 unrelated children from a single tertiary referral center, exome sequencing was performed. We assessed variants in recognized and suspected disease genes and searched for novel ones with a gene-based variant-burden analysis. RESULTS: In the majority of patients, exome sequencing could not identify causative variants. We found a pathogenic variant in a recognized associated disease gene in five patients (three pathogenic variants in NF1, one in ELN and a deletion of chromosome 7q11.23, consistent with Williams syndrome). In two other patients, (likely) pathogenic variants were found in putative renovascular hypertension genes (SMAD6 and GLA), with clinical implications for both. Ten additional patients carried variants of uncertain significance (VUS) in known (n = 4) or putative (n = 6) renovascular hypertension disease genes. Rare variant burden analysis yielded no further candidate genes. CONCLUSION: Genetic contributors, such as germline mutations in NF1, ELN, 7q11.23del were present in only 5 out of 37 (14%) children with renovascular hypertension. Twelve other children (32%) had potentially causal variants identified, including a pathogenic variant in SMAD6; a vasculopathy gene hitherto unknown to link with renovascular hypertension. Most importantly, our data show that exome sequencing can rarely identify the cause of renovascular hypertension in nonsyndromic children. We suggest that nongenetic factors or somatic genetic variation will play a more important role.

METHODS: We contacted paediatric and adult nephrologists through European professional organizations. Responding clinicians entered demographic, biochemical, genetic and clinical data in an online form. RESULTS: Adequate data were collected on 340 patients (29 countries, female 52%). Mutation testing had been performed on 206 patients (61%); pathogenic mutations were identified in 170 patients (83%). The median (range) presentation age was 0.5 (0-54) years and age at last follow-up was 11.0 (0-70.0) years. Adult height was slightly below average with a mean (SD score) of -0.57 (+/-1.16). There was an increased prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) Stage >/=2 in children (35%) and adults (82%). Nephrocalcinosis was reported in 88%. Nephrolithiasis was more common with SLC4A1 mutations (42% versus 21%). Thirty-six percent had hearing loss, particularly in ATP6V1B1 (88%). The median (interquartile range) prescribed dose of alkali (mEq/kg/day) was 1.9 (1.2-3.3). Adequate metabolic control (normal plasma bicarbonate and normocalciuria) was achieved in 158 patients (51%), more commonly in countries with higher gross domestic product (67% versus 23%), and was associated with higher height and estimated glomerular filtration rate. CONCLUSION: Long-term follow-up from this large dRTA cohort shows an overall favourable outcome with normal adult height for most and no patient with CKD Stage 5. However, 82% of adult patients have CKD Stages 2-4. Importance of adequate metabolic control was highlighted by better growth and renal function but was achieved in only half of patients.

In order to support a broad dynamic range and a high degree of precision, many of 3D renderings fundamental algorithms have been traditionally performed in floating-point. However, fixed-point data representation is preferable over floatingpoint representation in graphics applications on embedded devices where performance is of paramount importance, while the dynamic range and precision requirements are limited due to the small display sizes (current PDA’s are 640 × 480 (VGA), while cell-phones are even smaller). In this paper we analyze the efficiency of a CORDIC-augmented Sandbridge processor when implementing a vertex processor in software using fixed-point arithmetic. A CORDIC-based solution for vertex processing exhibits a number of advantages over classical Multiply-and-Acumulate solutions. First, since a single primitive is used to describe the computation, the code can easily be vectorized and multithreaded, and thus fits the major Sandbridge architectural features. Second, since a CORDIC iteration consists of only a shift operation followed by an addition, the computation may be deeply pipelined. Initially, we outline the Sandbridge architecture extension which encompasses a CORDIC functional unit and the associated instructions. Then, we consider rigid-body rotation, lighting, exponentiation, vector normalization, and perspective division (which are some of the most important data-intensive 3D graphics kernels) and propose a scheme to implement them on the CORDIC-augmented Sandbridge processor. Preliminary results indicate that the performance improvement within the extended instruction set ranges from 3× to 10× (with the exception of rigid body rotation)., Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
