De Rapportage Sport is een coproductie van het Sociaal Cultureel Planbureau, het Centraal Bureau voor Statistiek, NOC-NSF, TNO, de Universiteit van Tilburg en het W.J.H. Mulier Instituut. Het bestaat uit twee delen. In het eerste deel worden de ontwikkelingen beschreven op het terrein van het sportbeleid, de sportdeelname, vrijwilligerswerk, sport en media, sportorganisaties, sport en economie, sport en ruimte, en sport en bewegen. Daarbij ligt het accent op ontwikkelingen in de breedte- of amateursport. Het kleinere tweede deel gaat nader in op zowel de sociale betekenis van sport als de relatie tussen top- en breedtesport. De belangrijkste conclusies uit het rapport zijn: Nederlanders worden sportiever; ondanks de groeiende deelname aan sport, beweegt 55% van de Nederlanders vanuit gezondheidsoogpunt nog altijd onvoldoende; zwemmen is de populairste sport in Nederland; sport wordt commerciëler; een dalend aantal sporters is lid van een sportvereniging; tussen 1991 en 2001 steeg de zendtijd besteed aan sport met 172%; sport is de meest auto-intensieve vrijetijdsbesteding. 81% van alle verplaatsingen voor de sport vindt met de auto plaats.
