The genes required for host-specific pathogenicity in Fusarium oxysporum can be acquired through horizontal chromosome transfer (HCT). However, it is unknown if HCT commonly contributes to the diversification of pathotypes. Using comparative genomics and pathogenicity phenotyping, we explored the role of HCT in the evolution of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae, the cause of Fusarium wilt of strawberry, with isolates from four continents. We observed two distinct syndromes: one included chlorosis ('yellows-fragariae') and the other did not ('wilt-fragariae'). All yellows-fragariae isolates carried a predicted pathogenicity chromosome, 'chrY-frag ', that was horizontally transferred at least four times. chrY-frag was associated with virulence on specific cultivars and encoded predicted effectors that were highly upregulated during infection. chrY-frag was not present in wilt-fragariae; isolates causing this syndrome evolved pathogenicity independently. All origins of F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae occurred outside of the host's native range. Our data support the conclusion that HCT is widespread in F. oxysporum, but pathogenicity can also evolve independently. The absence of chrY-frag in wilt-fragariae suggests that multiple, distinct pathogenicity chromosomes can confer the same host specificity. The wild progenitors of cultivated strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) did not co-evolve with this pathogen, yet we discovered several sources of genetic resistance.

Here, we show that resistance to both races is widespread in natural and domesticated populations and that resistance to race 1 is conferred by partially to completely dominant alleles among loci (FW1, FW2, FW3, FW4, and FW5) found on three non-homoeologous chromosomes (1A, 2B, and 6B). The underlying genes have not yet been cloned and functionally characterized; however, plausible candidates were identified that encode pattern recognition receptors or other proteins known to confer gene-for-gene resistance in plants. High-throughput genotyping assays for SNPs in linkage disequilibrium with FW1-FW5 were developed to facilitate marker-assisted selection and accelerate the development of race 1 resistant cultivars. This study laid the foundation for identifying the genes encoded by FW1-FW5, in addition to exploring the genetics of resistance to race 2 and other races of the pathogen, as a precaution to averting a Fusarium wilt pandemic.

We present SymForce, a library for fast symbolic computation, code generation, and nonlinear optimization for robotics applications like computer vision, motion planning, and controls. SymForce combines the development speed and flexibility of symbolic math with the performance of autogenerated, highly optimized code in C++ or any target runtime language. SymForce provides geometry and camera types, Lie group operations, and branchless singularity handling for creating and analyzing complex symbolic expressions in Python, built on top of SymPy. Generated functions can be integrated as factors into our tangent-space nonlinear optimizer, which is highly optimized for real-time production use. We introduce novel methods to automatically compute tangent-space Jacobians, eliminating the need for bug-prone handwritten derivatives. This workflow enables faster runtime code, faster development time, and fewer lines of handwritten code versus the state-of-the-art. Our experiments demonstrate that our approach can yield order of magnitude speedups on computational tasks core to robotics. Comparative genomics was used to investigate the evolutionary relationships between Foa race 4, Foa race 3, and the Foci, which are all in FOSC Clade 2, and Foa race 2, which is in FOSC Clade 3.ResultsA phylogenetic analysis of 2718 single-copy conserved genes and mitochondrial DNA sequence indicated that Foa races 3 and 4 and the Foci are monophyletic within FOSC Clade 2; these strains also are in a single somatic compatibility group. However, in the accessory genomes, the Foci versus Foa races 3 and 4 differ in multiple contigs. Based on significantly increased expression of Foa race 4 genes in planta vs. in vitro, we identified 23 putative effectors and 13 possible pathogenicity factors. PCR primers for diagnosis of either Foa race 2 or 4 and the Foci were identified. Finally, mixtures of conidia that were pre-stained with different fluorochromes indicated that Foa race 4 formed conidial anastomosis tubes (CATs) with Foci. To meet the requirements of California's Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, there is a critical need for crop production strategies with less reliance on irrigation from surface and groundwater sources. One strategy for improving agricultural water use efficiency is reducing tillage and maintaining residues on the soil surface. We evaluated high residue no-till versus standard tillage in the San Joaquin Valley with and without cover crops on the yields of two crops, garbanzo and sorghum, for 4 years. The no-till treatment had no primary or secondary tillage. Sorghum yields were similar in no-till and standard tillage systems while no-till garbanzo yields matched or exceeded those of standard tillage, depending on the year. Cover crops had no effect on crop yields. Soil cover was highest under the no-till with cover crop system, averaging 97% versus 5% for the standard tillage without cover crop system. Our results suggest that garbanzos and sorghum can be grown under no-till practices in the San Joaquin Valley without loss of yield.

Fusarium wilt of tomato, caused by the soilborne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, is an increasingly important disease of tomato. This paper reports the high-quality draft genome assembly of F. oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici isolate D11 (race 3), which consists of 39 scaffolds with 57,281,978 bp (GC content, 47.5%), an N50 of 4,408,267 bp, a mean read coverage of 99.8×, and 17,682 predicted genes.

‘Colonial Soundscapes’ is the first systematic cultural history of the early phonograph and gramophone in Australian settler society. Drawing on recent work in sound studies and the history of sound, the ‘talking machine’ is conceived as part of the soundscape of colonial modernity in colonial and Federal Australia. I argue that national environmental/place attachment and modern listening practices developed together, with anthropological thought, popular culture, commercial life, intellectual elite discourse and everyday life providing the key sites for transformation. This thesis reads the materials of the early sound recording industry in light of recent conceptual emphases on the importance of sound in cultural life. Archival research into the history of sound recording was conducted at the EMI Archives Trust and Thomas Alva Edison Papers, Rutgers University, among others. I also draw heavily on the papers of several foundational anthropological recordists, chiefly Baldwin Spencer, Alfred Cort Haddon and E. Harold Davies. Extensive research into the trade and popular phonographic press also provides a corpus of material through which it is possible to recover the meaning of recorded sound in everyday Australian life in its first generations. I conceive of the early phonograph and gramophone in terms of an ‘economy’ and ‘ecology’ of sound in a settler society. These concepts are proposed as a mechanism for accounting for the raft of cultural responses provoked by early sound recording. An ‘economy’ of sound encompasses the economic, archival and scientific modes of apprehending the changed relationship between sound and source. The economic and business structures that underpinned the rise of a national recording industry in Australia fall under this rubric, as do attempts by salvage anthropologists to taxonomically fix and locate the speech and musics of Indigenous peoples, believed to be endangered by the onset of colonial modernity. Xanthomonas fragariae is a foliar pathogen of strawberry that is of significant concern to nursery production of strawberry transplants and field production of strawberry fruit. Long-read sequencing was employed to generate finished genomes for two isolates (each with one chromosome and two plasmids) from symptomatic plants in northern California.

In commercial production settings, few options exist to prevent or treat angular leaf spot (ALS) of strawberry, a disease of economic importance and caused by the bacterial pathogen Xanthomonas fragariae. In the process of isolating and identifying X. fragariae bacteria from symptomatic plants, we observed growth inhibition of X. fragariae by bacterial isolates from the same leaf macerates. Identified as species of Pseudomonas and Rhizobium, these isolates were confirmed to suppress growth of X. fragariae in agar overlay plates and in microtiter plate cultures, as did our reference strain Pseudomonas putida KT2440. Screening of a transposon mutant library of KT2440 revealed that disruption of the biosynthetic pathway for the siderophore pyoverdine resulted in complete loss of X. fragariae antagonism, suggesting iron competition as a mode of action. Antagonism could be replicated on plate and in culture by addition of purified pyoverdine or by addition of the chelating agents tannic acid and dipyridyl, while supplementing the medium with iron negated the inhibitory effects of pyoverdine, tannic acid and dipyridyl. When co-inoculated with tannic acid onto strawberry plants, X. fragariae's ability to cause foliar symptoms was greatly reduced, suggesting a possible opportunity for iron-based management of ALS. We discuss our findings in the context of 'nutritional immunity,' the idea that plant hosts restrict pathogen access to iron, either directly, or indirectly through their associated microbiota.

We propose a novel deep learning architecture for regressing disparity from a rectified pair of stereo images. We leverage knowledge of the problem's geometry to form a cost volume using deep feature representations. We learn to incorporate contextual information using 3-D convolutions over this volume. Disparity values are regressed from the cost volume using a proposed differentiable soft argmin operation, which allows us to train our method end-to-end to sub-pixel accuracy without any additional post-processing or regularization. We evaluate our method on the Scene Flow and KITTI datasets and on KITTI we set a new state-of-the-art benchmark, while being significantly faster than competing approaches.

Deep learning has started to revolutionize several different industries, and the applications of these methods in medicine are now becoming more commonplace. This study focuses on investigating the feasibility of tracking patients and clinical staff wearing Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags in a radiation oncology clinic using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The performance of these networks was compared to relative received signal strength indicator (RSSI) thresholding and triangulation. By utilizing temporal information, a combined CNN+ANN network was capable of correctly identifying the location of the BLE tag with an accuracy of 99.9%. It outperformed a CNN model (accuracy = 94%), a thresholding model employing majority voting (accuracy = 95%), and a triangulation classifier utilizing majority voting (accuracy = 95%). Future studies will seek to deploy this affordable real time location system in hospitals to improve clinical workflow, efficiency, and patient safety.

Im Untersuchungszeitraum wurden 288 Hüftendoprotheseneingriffe mit erhöhtem Luxationsrisiko durchgeführt. Bei 278 HTEP-Implantationen erfolgte der Einsatz von Gelenkköpfen ≤ 36 mm. In dieser Gruppe betrug die Luxationsrate 15,1% (n=42). Bei 10 Patienten wurden 40-mm- oder 44-mm-Gelenkköpfe eingesetzt. In diesen Fällen wurde das Luxationsrisiko entsprechend der vorgeschlagenen Klassifikation mit 3A (hoch) bis 4B (sehr hoch) bewertet. Bei einem mittleren Follow up von 22,8 Monaten wurde bei diesen Patienten keine Luxation festgestellt. Die mit 40-mm- sowie 44-mm-Köpfen erzielten Ergebnisse und die aktuelle Literatur sprechen für eine wesentlich höhere Gelenkstabilität und eine deutlich verminderte Luxationsneigung größerer Köpfe. Deren Einsatz ist daher gegenwärtig bei Risiko-patienten gerechtfertigt, sofern dieser in Abhängigkeit vom Pfannenaußendurch-messer konstruktiv möglich ist. Die Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit besteht darin zu prüfen, ob die Luxationsrate bei Hochrisikopatienten durch den Einsatz von 40-mm- und 44-mm-Köpfen im Vergleich zu Patienten mit maximal 36-mm-Köpfen reduziert werden kann. Hierzu wurden die im Zeitraum von September 2009 bis Mai 2014 hüftendoprothetisch versorgten Patienten mit einem erhöhten Luxationsrisiko erfasst und die Verläufe auf Luxationen überprüft. Zur Risikobewertung diente eine eigens entwickelte Klassifikation. Des Weiteren erfolgte die Analyse der postoperativen Verläufe, der Röntgenbilder und eines Telefoninterviews in den Fällen, in denen Köpfe ≥ 40 mm zum Einsatz kamen. Im Untersuchungszeitraum wurden 288 Hüftendoprotheseneingriffe mit erhöhtem Luxationsrisiko durchgeführt. Bei 278 HTEP-Implantationen erfolgte der Einsatz von Gelenkköpfen ≤ 36 mm. In dieser Gruppe betrug die Luxationsrate 15,1% (n=42). Bei 10 Patienten wurden 40-mm- oder 44-mm-Gelenkköpfe eingesetzt. E-banking is the remote delivery of new and traditional banking products and services through electronic channels. It allows customers to conduct financial transactions on a secure website which can be retail or virtual bank. This research sought to provide empirical evidence regarding satisfaction of customers with e- banking and provide recommendations. It evaluated customer satisfaction with e-banking service at National Bank of Kenya. The study was guided by the following specific objectives; investigation of e- banking web design influence on customer satisfaction in the banking industry; exploration of e-banking customer service influence on customer satisfaction in the banking industry; assessment of e-banking assurance on customer satisfaction in the banking industry and examination of preferential treatment of e-banking effect on customer satisfaction in the banking industry. The theoretical literature review evaluated e-banking and customer satisfaction based on various authors which sought to evaluate: if the web design was designed and ensured easy navigation, the layout was attractive and the design provided links to other sites; in the customer service, if e-banking services provided were accurate, the hyperlinks were valid, the web page loaded quickly and there was prompt responses to e-mails; on assurance, if there was security and privacy, confidence to adopt e-banking services by the customers and feeling of relieve by customers to transact; on preferential treatment, if the customer had a feeling of status using the e-banking service and the customer was offered preferential rates on e-banking. RGB-D cameras provide both color images and per-pixel depth estimates. The richness of this data and the recent development of low-cost sensors have combined to present an attractive opportunity for mobile robotics research. In this paper, we describe a system for visual odometry and mapping using an RGB-D camera, and its application to autonomous flight. By leveraging results from recent state-of-the-art algorithms and hardware, our system enables 3D flight in cluttered environments using only onboard sensor data. All computation and sensing required for local position control are performed onboard the vehicle, reducing the dependence on an unreliable wireless link to a ground station. However, even with accurate 3D sensing and position estimation, some parts of the environment have more perceptual structure than others, leading to state estimates that vary in accuracy across the environment. If the vehicle plans a path without regard to how well it can localize itself along that path, it runs the risk of becoming lost or worse. We show how the belief roadmap algorithm prentice2009belief, a belief space extension of the probabilistic roadmap algorithm, can be used to plan vehicle trajectories that incorporate the sensing model of the RGB-D camera. We evaluate the effectiveness of our system for controlling a quadrotor micro air vehicle, demonstrate its use for constructing detailed 3D maps of an indoor environment, and discuss its limitations., United States. The Australian snakes of the genus Pseudonaja (dugite, gwardar and common brown) account for the majority of snake bite related deaths in Australia. Without antivenom treatment, the risk of mortality is significant. There is an accumulating body of evidence to suggest that the efficacy of the antivenom is limited. The current study investigates the protein constituents recognized by the antivenom using 2-DE, immuno-blot techniques and rat tracheal organ bath assays. The 2-DE profiles for all three snake venoms were similar, with major species visualized at 78-132 kDa, 32-45 kDa and 6-15 kDa. Proteins characterized by LC-MS/MS revealed a coagulant toxin (∼42 kDa) and coagulant peptide (∼6 kDa), as well as two PLA2 (∼14 kDa). Peptides isolated from ∼78 kDa and 15-32 kDa protein components showed no similarity to known protein sequences. Protein recognition by the antivenom occurred predominantly for the higher molecular weight components with little recognition of 6-32 kDa MW species. The ability of antivenom to neutralize venom activity was also investigated using rat tracheal organ bath assays. The venoms of Pseudonaja affinis affinis and Pseudonaja nuchalis incited a sustained, significant contraction of the trachea. These contractions were attributed to PLA2 enzymatic activity as pre-treatment with the PLA2 inhibitor 4-BPB attenuated the venom-induced contractions. The venom of Pseudonaja textilis incited tracheal contractility through a non-PLA2 enzymatic activity. Neither activity was attenuated by the antivenom treatment. These results represent the first proteomic investigation of the venoms from the snakes of the genus Pseudonaja, revealing a possible limitation of the brown snake antivenom in binding to the low MW protein components.

Background & Aims: Eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal diseases are frequently associated with extraintestinal features, including bronchopulmonary manifestations. The factors predisposing to bronchial hyperresponsiveness in eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal diseases are unknown. To elucidate the mechanistic link between eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal diseases and bronchial hyperresponsiveness, we used murine models of eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal diseases and eotaxin-1/transgene-induced eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal diseases. Methods: Mice were sensitized and orally challenged with ovalbumin-coated encapsulated particles to induce eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal disease, and bronchial responsiveness was examined. Furthermore, transgenic mice expressing eotaxin in the intestine (with the rat fatty acid-binding promoter) were used to specifically elucidate the contribution of this chemokine in eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal disease-associated bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Results: The induction of allergen-induced eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal disease was directly correlated with the development of bronchial hyperresponsiveness. The development of bronchial hyperresponsiveness in mice with allergen-induced eosinophil-associated gastrointestinal disease was dependent on eotaxin expression in the gastrointestinal tract. Expression of eotaxin in the gastrointestinal tract of transgenic mice was sufficient to promote bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Bronchial hyperresponsiveness was shown to be directly linked to the aberrant CD4+ T helper 2 lymphocyte production of interleukin-13. It is interesting to note that transgenic expression of eotaxin was linked with enhanced T helper 2 lymphocyte/cytokine synthesis (interleukin-4, -5, and -13) and the production of mucosal immunoglobulin G1 in the gastrointestinal lumen. We also showed that eotaxin treatment of CD4+ T cells enhanced interleukin-13 production in vitro. C

However, it is not named the same throughout the world. Popular Education in Latin America, Progressive Education in the USA Socialistic Education in Tanzania en People's Education in the RSA can, for instance, all be viewed as examples of education for liberation. In this study the origin, development and nature of the above-mentioned forms of education are described and compared. Firstly, the origin and development of Popular Education and the views of inter alia Paulo Freire and Antonio Gramsci regarding the relationship between education, liberation and change are discussed. Thereafter, the historical development of Progressive Education, Socialistic Education and People's Education are described and discussed. These forms of education are subsequently compared and similarities and differences are disclosed. Lastly, education for liberation is evaluated according to educational criteria and recommendations concerning educational change and renewal in the RSA are made.

To evaluate the effects of drugs and environmental stresses on pilot psychomotor performance, an automated system was developed around a Link GAT-1 flight trainer. Performance was electronically scored during 1-hour simulations of cross-country instrument flight, using special purpose analog and digital logic. The sensitivity of this system was assessed by observing the acute effects of three graded doses, 0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 gm/kg body weight, of ethyl alcohol on scored performance. Three separate experiments were conducted using a total of 22 male subjects, ages 21 to 29.

To calibrate the performance measuring scales for two separate tasks developed around the Link GAT-1 flight trainer, the degrading effects of ethyl alcohol were studied in 12 USAF instructor pilots. The subjects were tested at three alcohol dose levels (0.3, 0.6, and 0.9 gm alcohol/kg body wt.), which resulted in indirectly measured blood alcohol levels of approximately 30, 60 and 100 mg% respectively. Statistically significant performance decrements were found for only the moderate and high alcohol dose levels. The magnitudes of the decrements corresponded closely to those reported in previous experiments using the same test conditions but where the subjects had no previous flying experience.

A prototype control and scoring system has been developed around the Link GAT-1 trainer that permits laboratory assessment of pilot performance. This system automatically presents subjects with an hour-long series of maneuver requests providing a laboratory approximation of a cross-country flight on instruments in a single-engine light aircraft. Performance is scored electronically in terms of how closely subjects are able to stay within the tolerances prescribed for various flight instruments as they execute the series of maneuvers. Major components of this non-computer based system are: (1) two Link GAT-1 trainers; (2) special display panels mounted in the cockpit of each trainer; (3) a central control station; (4) an assembly of special-purpose analog and digital logic for error detection and scoring; and (5) paper tape perforators for data logging. This report covers the basic design and circuitry details. Results of performance tests using this system are reported elsewhere.

An automated system has been developed to assess pilot performance in a Singer Co. GAT-1 trainer. This report is an instruction manual for subjects which explains the basic functions of the various controls and instruments of the GAT-1 and the test requirements. Included is a set of instruction cards describing the maneuvers to be executed during the course of the hour-long test. Strategies for obtaining low error scores are also discussed.

A prototype test system has been developed for use with a Singer Co. GAT-1 flight trainer that permits assessment of a pilot's ability to track a target which moves about three separate axes: vertically (altitude), laterally, and in depth (range). A low-cost laser-generated visual display and rear projection screen was used to create the visual tracking task which is crudely akin to aerial refueling or formation flying. Performance was assessed on-line in terms of: (1) integrated absolute tracking error and (2) time on target, by using a bench top analog computer (EAI model TR-10) and simple hardware.

Three hundred and thirty-one Navy bachelors (both male and female) were interviewed to determine attitudes toward, preferences for, and current satisfaction with, bachelor housing. Questionnaires were administered and interviews conducted at five West Coast Naval installations. Satisfaction indices were quantified from questionnaire responses to pinpoint critical areas for consideration in future housing design and construction. (Author)
