Search

The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,717 new measurements from 869 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Most of the 120 reviews are updated, including many that are heavily revised. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print, as a web version optimized for use on phones, and as an Android app. The 2024 edition of the Review of Particle Physics should be cited as: S. Homogenous radioactive gas contamination constitutes the hardest challenge for radioprotection due to its elusive nature. Most common radioactive gas are 85Kr, 222Rn, and tritiated (3H) vapors. Each of them has different challenges, often leading to specialized single-gas detectors. The state-of-the-art detection either produces chemical-radiological waste, is hard to implement online, or requires large volume. A new paradigm is presented for radioactive gas detection that can perform online detection on any gas and fit in the hand. This study use photoluminescent metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as both porous gas sponges and scintillators. The response of several zinc based MOF is studied, using a unique radioactive gas test bench. These tests showed that MOFs are able to both concentrate and detect successfully 85Kr. The investigation is completed with calibration with different activities. The study also reports detection of 222Rn, and measurement of its half-life. Finally, the study is completed with the successful detection of tritiated dihydrogen, commonly known to be a hard radionuclide to detect due to its low energy and penetration range. This paper shows that scintillating MOFs are a powerful solid-state approach and a practical solution to the challenge of radioactive gas measurements.

We use spatially-resolved spectroscopy of a distant giant gravitational arc to test orientation effects on MgII absorption equivalent width (EW) and covering fraction (kappa) in the circumgalactic medium of a foreground star-forming galaxy (G1) at z~0.77. Forty-two spatially-binned arc positions uniformly sample impact parameters (D) to G1 between 10 and 30 kpc and azimuthal angles alpha between 30 and 90 degrees (minor axis). We find an EW-D anti-correlation, akin to that observed statistically in quasar absorber studies, and an apparent correlation of both EW and kappa with alpha, revealing a non-isotropic gas distribution. In line with our previous results on MgII kinematics suggesting the presence of outflows in G1, at minimum a simple 3-D static double-cone model (to represent the trace of bipolar outflows) is required to recreate the EW spatial distribution. The D and alpha values probed by the arc cannot confirm the presence of a disc, but the data highly disfavor a disc alone. We present gravitational-arc tomography of the cool-warm enriched circumgalactic medium (CGM) of an isolated galaxy (``G1'') at $z \approx 0.77$. Combining VLT/MUSE adaptive-optics and Magellan/MagE echelle spectroscopy we obtain partially-resolved kinematics of MgII in absorption and [OII] in emission. The unique arc configuration allows us to probe 42 spatially independent arc positions transverse to G1, plus 4 positions in front of it. The transverse positions cover G1's minor and major axes at impact parameters of $\approx 10-30$ kpc and $\approx 60$ kpc, respectively. We observe a direct kinematic connection between the cool-warm enriched CGM (traced by MgII) and the interstellar medium (traced by [OII]). This provides strong evidence for the existence of an extended disc that co-rotates with the galaxy out to tens of kiloparsecs. The MgII velocity dispersion ($\sigma \approx 30-100$ km s$^{-1}$, depending on position) is of the same order as the modeled galaxy rotational velocity ($v_{\rm rot} \approx 80$ km s$^{-1}$), providing evidence for the presence of a turbulent and pressure-supported CGM component. We regard the absorption to be modulated by a galactic-scale outflow, as it offers a natural scenario for the observed line-of-sight dispersion and asymmetric profiles observed against both the arcs and the galaxy. An extended enriched co-rotating disc together with the signatures of a galactic outflow, are telltale signs of metal recycling in the $z\sim 1$ CGM., Comment: MNRAS accepted. Classical music venues in the Netherlands and throughout the world are struggling to attract new audiences. Especially younger visitors are underrepresented. Previous research emphasizes the importance of providing new, potentially interested audiences with more means to consume the music. This paper presents an exploratory case study with the persuasive game Listening Space which we developed to help attract new audiences and thus preserve Western classical music heritage. In particular, we studied to what extent this game could promote more varied ways of listening to classical music and thus enrich the experience of visiting a classical music concert. We designed and executed a controlled randomized trial with surveys before and after the experiment as well as a series of in-depth interviews with participants after the experiment. Our treatment group consisted of 139 participants (both new and existing visitors). They played our digital game at their own convenience, followed by a visit to a concert in a renowned classical music concert hall. A control group of 165 participants only visited the concerts. We measured the effects of the game - changes in the ways participants listen to classical music - through self-report in questionnaires before and after the experiment. Results show that Listening Space seems most effective for new audiences: the game promoted more varied ways of listening in the treatment group and thus enriched their experience of visiting a classical music concert. The control group of new visitors did not show an effect and also no differences were found between the treatment and control groups of regular visitors of classical music concerts We employed regression analysis to identify predictors of the game's effect on listening styles: participants' age and their level of appreciation of the classical music genre were negatively related to the effectiveness of the game. We present spatially-resolved echelle spectroscopy of an intervening MgII-FeII-MgI absorption-line system detected at $z_{\rm abs}=0.73379$ toward the giant gravitational arc PSZ1 G311.65-18.48. The absorbing gas is associated to an inclined disk-like star-forming galaxy, whose major axis is aligned with the two arc-segments reported here. We probe in absorption the galaxy's extended disk continuously, at $\approx 3$ kpc sampling, from its inner region out to $15\times$ the optical radius. We detect strong ($W_0^{2796}>0.3$ \r{A}) coherent absorption along $13$ independent positions at impact parameters $D=0$--$29$ kpc on one side of the galaxy, and no absorption at $D=28$--$57$ kpc on the opposite side (all de-lensed distances at $z_{\rm abs}$). We show that: (1) the gas distribution is anisotropic; (2) $W_0^{2796}$, $W_0^{2600}$, $W_0^{2852}$, and the ratio $W_0^{2600}\!/W_0^{2796}$, all anti-correlate with $D$; (3) the $W_0^{2796}$-$D$ relation is not cuspy and exhibits significantly less scatter than the quasar-absorber statistics; (4) the absorbing gas is co-rotating with the galaxy out to $D \lesssim 20$ kpc, resembling a `flat' rotation curve, but at $D\gtrsim 20$ kpc velocities decline below the expectations from a 3D disk-model extrapolated from the nebular [OII] emission. These signatures constitute unambiguous evidence for rotating extra-planar diffuse gas, possibly also undergoing enriched accretion at its edge. Estimates of dynamic rate functions for riverine channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque), populations are limited. The open nature and inherent difficulty in sampling riverine environments and the propensity for dispersal of channel catfish impede estimation of population variables. However, contemporary population models (i.e. robust design models) can incorporate the open nature of these systems. The purpose of this study was to determine channel catfish population abundance, survival and size structure and to characterize growth in the lower Platte River, Nebraska, USA. Annual survival estimates of adult channel catfish were 13%–49%, and channel catfish abundance estimates ranged from 8,281 to 24,261 fish within a 10-km sampling reach. The range of Shovelnose Sturgeon (SVS) Scaphirhynchus platorynchus in the great rivers of central North America has contracted, but most remaining populations are considered stable, likely due to a combination of successful harvest regulations and longitudinal continuity of many river reaches, despite damming in upper reaches. The evolutionary relationships of SVS relative to sister taxa is still a matter of debate. Genetic diversity varies across the range, with substantial haplotype overlap among SVS and its congeners. Shovelnose Sturgeon mature early at 5–7 years, and spawn every 2– 3 years. Some individuals may spawn in fall. Whether this species migrates is debatable, but individuals move long distances with larvae dispersing greater than 250 km, and adults moving >1900 km. Shovelnose Sturgeon appear to complete all aspects of their life cycle in the main channel of rivers, with sand and associated dunes playing an important role in station holding even at high flows. The greatest threats to this species include river temperatures exceeding 26°C that may impair growth and survival of young life stages, dams that impair movement during spring flooding, loss of critical mid-channel island habitats which may be important nursery areas, and increases in harvest pressure for the caviar trade. Given the broad distribution of this species across the jurisdiction of multiple states in the US, a species-wide conservation plan should be in place to ensure that SVS populations remain stable or increase.

While olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) occur throughout tropical oceans their physiological ecology has been poorly documented. In May 2005, satellite-relayed data loggers (SRDLs) were attached during oviposition to four adult female olive ridley turtles on the Wessell Islands, northern Australia. Subsequent nesting haul-outs were determined for two of these turtles using a combination of movement and diving data. Internesting intervals were relatively long (27 and 18 days, respectively) for hard-shelled turtles given the warm (27–28 °C) water temperatures, possibly due to a low metabolic rate for this species. Turtles travelled considerable distances during the internesting interval (200 and 125 km respectively), possibly associated with a search for food or alternative nesting sites. Changes in dive behaviour suggest that olive ridleys prepare for oviposition by searching for an appropriate beach over several days.

Radial and mixed flow turbines which are an important component of a turbocharger consist essentially of a volute, a rotor and a diffuser. Vaneless volute turbines, which have reasonable performance and low cost, are the most used in turbochargers for automotive engines. Care has to be done in the design of the volute, whose function is to convert a part of the engine exhaust gas energy into kinetic energy and direct the flow towards the rotor inlet at an appropriate flow angle with reduced losses. Turbulent compressible flow analysis and performance prediction using the finite volume method implemented in the ANSYS-CFX software, are carried out on two different volute types. Four volute, with different cross section areas used for radial turbines, are studied and the computed results such as the computed averaged volute exit flow angles, the volute overall loss coefficients and the exit radial velocity component distributions are compared with the available experimental data. The second volute studied is the one used for a mixed flow turbine in the turbocharger test rig at Imperial College. In this part of the study, the interest is focused on the influence of the volute inlet flow conditions on its performance (efficiency, exit flow angle, etc).
