The discrepancy of a matrix $M \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times n}$ is given by $\mathrm{DISC}(M) := \min_{\boldsymbol{x} \in \{-1,1\}^n} \|M\boldsymbol{x}\|_\infty$. An outstanding conjecture, attributed to Koml\'os, stipulates that $\mathrm{DISC}(M) = O(1)$, whenever $M$ is a Koml\'os matrix, that is, whenever every column of $M$ lies within the unit sphere. Our main result asserts that $\mathrm{DISC}(M + R/\sqrt{d}) = O(d^{-1/2})$ holds asymptotically almost surely, whenever $M \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times n}$ is Koml\'os, $R \in \mathbb{R}^{d \times n}$ is a Rademacher random matrix, $d = \omega(1)$, and $n = \omega(d \log d)$. The factor $d^{-1/2}$ normalising $R$ is essentially best possible and the dependency between $n$ and $d$ is asymptotically best possible., Comment: For version 3, some oversights have been corrected and more importantly the dependency between n and d has been significantly improved to reach optimum. Semi-random processes involve an adaptive decision-maker, whose goal is to achieve some predetermined objective in an online randomized environment. They have algorithmic implications in various areas of computer science, as well as connections to biological processes involving decision making. In this paper, we consider a recently proposed semi-random graph process, described as follows: we start with an empty graph on $n$ vertices, and in each round, the decision-maker, called Builder, receives a uniformly random vertex $v$, and must immediately (in an online manner) choose another vertex $u$, adding the edge $\{u,v\}$ to the graph. Builder's end goal is to make the constructed graph satisfy some predetermined monotone graph property. We consider the property of containing a spanning graph $H$ as a subgraph. It was asked by N. Alon whether for any bounded-degree $H$, Builder can construct a copy of $H$ w.h.p. in $O(n)$ rounds. We answer this question positively in a strong sense, showing that any graph with maximum degree $\Delta$ can be constructed w.h.p. in $(3\Delta/2 + o(\Delta)) n$ rounds. This is tight (even for the offline case) up to a multiplicative factor of $3 + o_{\Delta}(1)$. Furthermore, for the special case where $H$ is a spanning forest of maximum degree $\Delta$, we show that $H$ can be constructed w.h.p. in $O(n \log \Delta)$ rounds. This is tight up to a multiplicative constant, even for the offline setting. Finally, we show a separation between adaptive and non-adaptive strategies, proving a lower bound of $\Omega(n\sqrt{\log n})$ on the number of rounds necessary to eliminate all isolated vertices w.h.p. using a non-adaptive strategy. This bound is tight, and in fact there are non-adaptive strategies for constructing a Hamilton cycle or a $K_r$-factor, which are successful w.h.p. within $O(n\sqrt{\log n})$ rounds.

We introduce and study a game variant of the classical spanning-tree problem. Our spanning-tree game is played between two players, min and max, who alternate turns in jointly constructing a spanning tree of a given connected weighted graph G. Starting with the empty graph, in each turn a player chooses an edge that does not close a cycle in the forest that has been generated so far and adds it to that forest. The game ends when the chosen edges form a spanning tree in G. The goal of min is to minimize the weight of the resulting spanning tree and the goal of max is to maximize it. A strategy for a player is a function that maps each forest in G to an edge that is not yet in the forest and does not close a cycle. We show that while in the classical setting a greedy approach is optimal, the game setting is more complicated: greedy strategies, namely ones that choose in each turn the lightest (min) or heaviest (max) legal edge, are not necessarily optimal, and calculating their values is NP-hard. We study the approximation ratio of greedy strategies. We show that while a greedy strategy for min guarantees nothing, the performance of a greedy strategy for max is satisfactory: it guarantees that the weight of the generated spanning tree is at least w(MST(G))/2, where w(MST(G)) is the weight of a maximum spanning tree in G, and its approximation ratio with respect to an optimal strategy for max is 1.5+1/w(MST(G)), assuming weights in [0,1]. We also show that these bounds are tight. Moreover, in a stochastic setting, where weights for the complete graph K_n are chosen at random from [0,1], the expected performance of greedy strategies is asymptotically optimal. Finally, we study some variants of the game and study an extension of our results to games on general matroids.

In this paper we prove a sufficient condition for the existence of a Hamilton cycle, which is applicable to a wide variety of graphs, including relatively sparse graphs. In contrast to previous criteria, ours is based on two properties only: one requiring expansion of "small” sets, the other ensuring the existence of an edge between any two disjoint "large” sets. We also discuss applications in positional games, random graphs and extremal graph theory

Let P be a monotone increasing graph property, let G = (V, E) be a graph, and let q be a positive integer. In this paper, we study the (1: q) Maker-Breaker game, played on the edges of G, in which Maker's goal is to build a graph that satisfies the property P. It is clear that in order for Maker to have a chance of winning, G itself must satisfy P. We prove that if G satisfies P in some strong sense, that is, if one has to delete sufficiently many edges from G in order to obtain a graph that does not satisfy P, then Maker has a winning strategy for this game. We also consider a different notion of satisfying some property in a strong sense, which is motivated by a problem of Duffus, Łuczak and Rödl [6]

We show an $\Omega\big(\Delta^{\frac{1}{3}-\frac{\eta}{3}}\big)$ lower bound on the runtime of any deterministic distributed $\mathcal{O}\big(\Delta^{1+\eta}\big)$-graph coloring algorithm in a weak variant of the \LOCAL\ model. In particular, given a network graph \mbox{$G=(V,E)$}, in the weak \LOCAL\ model nodes communicate in synchronous rounds and they can use unbounded local computation. We assume that the nodes have no identifiers, but that instead, the computation starts with an initial valid vertex coloring. A node can \textbf{broadcast} a \textbf{single} message of \textbf{unbounded} size to its neighbors and receives the \textbf{set of messages} sent to it by its neighbors. That is, if two neighbors of a node $v\in V$ send the same message to $v$, $v$ will receive this message only a single time; without any further knowledge, $v$ cannot know whether a received message was sent by only one or more than one neighbor. Neighborhood graphs have been essential in the proof of lower bounds for distributed coloring algorithms, e.g., \cite{linial92,Kuhn2006On}. Our proof analyzes the recursive structure of the neighborhood graph of the respective model to devise an $\Omega\big(\Delta^{\frac{1}{3}-\frac{\eta}{3}}\big)$ lower bound on the runtime for any deterministic distributed $\mathcal{O}\big(\Delta^{1+\eta}\big)$-graph coloring algorithm. Furthermore, we hope that the proof technique improves the understanding of neighborhood graphs in general and that it will help towards finding a lower (runtime) bound for distributed graph coloring in the standard \LOCAL\ model. Our proof technique works for one-round algorithms in the standard \LOCAL\ model and provides a simpler and more intuitive proof for an existing $\Omega(\Delta^2)$ lower bound.

For a tree T on n vertices, we study the Maker-Breaker game, played on the edge set of the complete graph on n vertices, which Maker wins as soon as the graph she builds contains a copy of T. We prove that if T has bounded maximum degree and $n$ is sufficiently large, then Maker can win this game within n+1 moves. Moreover, we prove that Maker can build almost every tree on n vertices in n-1 moves and provide nontrivial examples of families of trees which Maker cannot build in n-1 moves.

We study Maker-Breaker games played on the edge set of a random graph. Specifically, we consider the random graph process and analyze the first time in a typical random graph process that Maker starts having a winning strategy for his final graph to admit some property $\mP$. We focus on three natural properties for Maker's graph, namely being $k$-vertex-connected, admitting a perfect matching, and being Hamiltonian. We prove the following optimal hitting time results: with high probability Maker wins the $k$-vertex connectivity game exactly at the time the random graph process first reaches minimum degree $2k$; with high probability Maker wins the perfect matching game exactly at the time the random graph process first reaches minimum degree $2$; with high probability Maker wins the Hamiltonicity game exactly at the time the random graph process first reaches minimum degree $4$. The latter two statements settle conjectures of Stojakovi\'{c} and Szab\'{o}., Comment: 24 pages
