A series of six dications composed of pure hydrocarbons with one to six non-substituted 9,10-anthrylene units end-capped with two dibenzotropyliums were designed and synthesized to elucidate the electronic properties of huge oligo(9,10-anthrylene) backbones. Their structures were success-fully determined by X-ray analyses even in the case of eight planar 14 pi-electron units, revealing that all dications adopt almost orthogonally twisted structures between neighboring units. Spectroscopic and voltammetric analyses show that neither the significant overlap of orbitals nor the delocalization of electrons between 14 pi-electron units occurs due to the orthogonally twisted geometry even in solution. As a result, sequential oxidation processes were observed with the reversible formation of multivalent cations with the release of the same number of electrons as the number of anthrylene units. Upon two-electron reduction, a closed-shell butterfly-shaped form was obtained from the dication containing one anthrylene unit, whereas open-shell twisted biradicals were isolated as stable entities in the cases of derivatives containing three to six anthrylene units. Notably, from the derivative with two anthrylene units, a metastable open-shell isomer was obtained quantitatively and underwent slow thermal conversion to the most stable closed-shell isomer (Ea = 23.1 kcal mol-1). There is a drastic change in oxidation potentials between two neutral species (OLE = 1.32 V in CH2Cl2). Since the present dications were regenerated upon oxidation of the isolated reduction products, these systems may contribute to the development of advanced response systems capable of switching color, magnetic properties, and oxidative properties by using a cation-capped orthogonal geometry.

From the helium (He) plasma irradiations to tungsten performed in the Magnum-PSI device, the effects of deposition of metals on the helium-plasma induced fiberform nanostructures (fuzz) are discussed. It was found that fuzz was not formed at the center of the plasma cylinder if there were significant metallic impurities from the source. Deposition of metallic impurities (mainly molybdenum and copper) counteracted the growth of fuzz. In addition to the effects of metals from the source, we installed a sputtering source near the sample to replicate the deposition environment in fusion devices. The thickness of fuzzy layer was ～7µm, which was about five times greater than that without deposition, at the He flux of 1.3×10^26 m^2 suggesting that the growth rate of fuzz layer was significantly accelerated due to the deposition of tungsten.

Three-dimensionally localization of radiative cooling due to nitrogen (N2) seeding for divertor detachment was detected experimentally. Since the localization along some magnetic field lines induces toroidal asymmetry of heat load reduction on divertor plates, it should be avoided for fusion reactors. The three-dimensionally localized structure was extracted using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) from two-dimensional radiation images measured with an InfraRed imaging Video Bolometer (IRVB). By applying PCA to 34 images each in N2 seeded plasmas with toroidally-asymmetric heat load reduction and in neon (Ne) seeded plasmas with toroidally-symmetric heat load reduction, a radiation feature in N2 seeded plasmas was found as one of the principal components (PC). The three-dimensional transport code EMC3-EIRENE indicated that the ionization in one of the divertor legs is enhanced in nitrogen seeding compared with Ne seeding due to the difference in the first ionization energy. The magnetic field lines from the divertor leg were along the extracted radiation structure and were terminated by the divertor where the heat load decreased due to the N2 seeding. We report the observation of arcing damage on the diagnostic shutter during the glow discharge wall conditioning in LHD. The diagnostic system has no experience of plasma discharge produced by electron or ion cyclotron resonance heating or neutral beam injection. The arc trails were observed on the aluminum surface but not on the stainless steel although both materials were exposed to the glow discharge with the same duration. Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) wavelength spectra including line emissions released from neon (Ne) ions ranging from low to high charge states observed simultaneously in a single discharge are summarized for contribution to compile a fundamental spectral dataset for the Ne-seeded divertor heat load reduction experiments in Large Helical Device (LHD). NeIX and NeX lines were observed in the EUV wavelength range of 10∼50 Å and NeIII-NeVIII lines were observed in the VUV wavelength range of 400∼1000 Å. The temporal evolutions of the line intensities exhibited different behaviors between the edge emissions of NeIII-NeVIII with the ionization potential, Ei, of 63∼239 eV and the core emission of NeX with Ei of 1362 eV. From the viewpoint of the development of molecular response systems, stimulus-induced switching of multi-conformational/multi-configurational overcrowded ethylenes are interesting, whose properties could be manipulated by understanding the detailed isomerization paths. Anthraquinodi-methane (AQD) ring-flip is usually a very fast process, and thus less studied experimentally. Herein, we studied AQDs with dibenzo- and tribenzocycloheptatrienylidene units, which have large enough steric hindrance to retard the AQD ring-flip to allow determination of the Delta G(not equal) value experimentally. Their thermal isomerization was also scrutinized using the artificial force induced reaction method to elucidate the intermediates. Based on the structural unsymmetry in a newly prepared AQD, one of the isomers that undergoes a reversible conformational change via AQD ring-flip was isolated and analyzed by X-ray for the first time.

Turbulence spreading into the edge stochastic magnetic layer induced by magnetic fluctuation is observed at the sharp boundary region in the large helical device. The density fluctuation excited at the sharp boundary region with a large pressure gradient does not propagate into the boundary region due to the blocking of turbulence spreading by the large second derivative of the pressure gradient. Once the magnetic fluctuation appears at the boundary, the density fluctuation begins to penetrate the edge stochastic layer and the second derivative of the pressure gradient also decreases. The increase of density fluctuation in this layer results in the broadening and reduction of the peak divertor heat load. In order to explore the compatibility of good core plasma performance with divertor heat load mitigation, the interaction between cold edge plasma and core plasma transport, including the edge transport barrier (ETB), has been analysed in the divertor detachment discharges of deuterium plasmas in LHD with resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field application. The RMP application introduces a widened edge stochastic layer and sharp boundary in the magnetic field structure between the confinement region and the edge stochastic layer. The widened edge stochastic layer enhances impurity radiation and provides stable detachment operation as compared with the case without RMP. It is found that ETB is formed at the confinement boundary at the onset of detachment transition. However, as the detachment deepens, the resistive pressure gradient-driven MHD mode is excited, which degrades the ETB. At the same time, however, the core transport decreases to keep global plasma stored energy (Wp) unchanged, showing clear core-edge coupling. After a gradual increase of density fluctuation during the MHD activity, a spontaneous increase of Wp and the recovery of ETB are observed while the detachment is maintained. Then, the coherent MHD mode ceases and ELM-like bursts appear. In the improved mode, impurity decontamination occurs, and the divertor heat load increases slightly. Key controlling physical processes in the interplay between core and cold edge plasma are discussed. A comparison between deuterium and hydrogen plasmas shows that hydrogen plasmas exhibit similar features to the deuterium ones in terms of density and magnetic fluctuations, impurity decontamination towards higher confinement, etc. But most of the features are modest in the hydrogen plasmas and thus no clear confinement mode transition with clear ETB formation is defined. In the Large Helical Device, the divertor detachment has been attempted by application of resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field and Ne gas puffing in electron cyclotron resonance- heated discharges for compatibility of high central electron temperature and low divertor heat load. Two kinds of divertor detachment phases were observed. The first one appeared transiently just after the Ne gas puffing (1st detachment), and the second one appeared steadily in the latter half of the discharge (2nd detachment). Space-resolved extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy revealed that NeVI-NeVIII emissions increased slightly outside the last closed flux surface (LCFS), while NeIX and NeX emissions increased inside the LCFS in the 1st detachment phase. Although in the 1st detachment the divertor heat load was significantly reduced, the central electron temperature also decreased because the Ne ions were penetrated inside the LCFS as a radiation source. In the 2nd detachment phase, NeVI-NeVIII emissions increased outside the LCFS while NeIX and NeX emissions kept low intensity inside the LCFS. In this phase, low divertor heat load and high central electron temperature were obtained simultaneously because the Ne ions were localized outside the LCFS as a radiation source. Divertor detachment using higher-Z (Kr) and/or lower-Z (Ne) is investigated. Using Kr+Ne superimposed seeding, plasma radiation could be enhanced at the upstream region in the edge plasma with suppression of impurity accumulation toward the core plasma. Here, the pre-seeded Kr emission was drastically enhanced after the subsequent Ne seeding. Moreover, the detachment using Kr+Ne seeding could be stably sustained while the detachment using single species seeding is short-lived. Reduction of edge electron temperature due to Ne seeding can promote the Kr emission at the upstream region. Feasibility of an ion sensitive probe was evaluated in high electron density (> 5 × 1019 m−3) helium plasmas produced in the Magnum-PSI device. The ion sensitive probe showed that the ion temperature was ∼ 1 eV and almost equal to the electron temperature. Increasing the neutral pressure to efficiently lead to the electron-ion recombination processes, the electron currents were collected at the ion collector. A new type of self-sustained divertor oscillation is discovered in the Large Helical Device stellarator, where the peripheral plasma is detached from material diverters by means of externally applied perturbation fields. The divertor oscillation is found to be a self-regulation of an isolated magnetic field structure (the magnetic island) width induced by a drastic change in a poloidal inhomogeneity of the plasma radiation across the detachment-attachment transitions. Ion flux into a target plate in expanding and/or contracting magnetic field configuration has been measured under detached plasma condition in the linear plasma device NAGDIS-II. When the magnetic field was contracting towards the target plate, the strong reduction of the ion flux into the target was observed. This result indicates that the contraction in magnetic field should contribute to enhancing the degree of detachment. From pulsed plasma experiments focusing on neutral pressure dependence, the impacts of a transition from a low to a high recycling target on the particle load were investigated and discussed in the linear plasma device, Magnum-PSI. Time traces of the target ion flux were mitigated in high neutral pressure cases because of a plasma-neutral interaction. On the other hand, in low neutral-pressure cases, the target ion flux indicated partial suppression in the last part of the pulse. The Langmuir probe, located 200 mm upstream from the target plate, did not exhibit such a suppression. Pulse suppression can be expected from the localized interaction between recycled neutral flux and pulsed plasma in front of the target. The mean-free paths of recycled neutral particles regarding the charge exchange with pulse ions and elastic scattering with background neutral particles were compared. A carbon-carbon (C-C) single bond longer than 1.7 angstrom shows unique bond flexibility, even though a C-C single bond is typically rigid and robust. We report here that the bond length of flexible C-C single bonds surrounded by bulky alkyl groups in novel hexaphenylethane-type hydrocarbons might be affected by weak noncovalent interactions, such as London dispersion. Thanks to London dispersion, an ultralong and flexible C-C single bond exhibits an obvious bond contraction. X-ray analyses and Raman spectroscopy provided direct information regarding the bond length and strength, whereas density functional theory calculations explained the bond contraction driven by London dispersion. The change in bond length of an extremely elongated flexible C-C bond would be a good probe for quantifying weak interactions that are usually difficult to detect.

With the help of the linear divertor simulation device Magnum-PSI, a fluctuation investigation of the impact of the target plate geometry was conducted. We simultaneously quantify coherent low-frequency fluctuations with a newly built 70-GHz microwave reflectometry system, a reciprocating probe, a light emission detector system, and a fast-framing camera system. The strong low-frequency fluctuations were observed at both the electron density and the plasma radiations by moving the target plate along the magnetic field line. Furthermore, a strong peak in fluctuation intensity and the influence of the target plate tilt angle on the fluctuation intensity were noted.

We have investigated plasma detachment phenomena of high-density helium plasmas in the linear plasma device Pilot-PSI, which can realize a relevant ITER SOL/Divertor plasma condition. The experiment clearly indicated plasma detachment features such as drops in the plasma pressure and particle flux along the magnetic field lines that were observed under the condition of high neutral pressure; a feature of flux drop was parameterized using the degree of detachment (DOD) index. Fundamental plasma parameters such as electron temperature (Te) and electron density in the detached recombining plasmas were measured by different methods: reciprocating electrostatic probes, Thomson scattering (TS), and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The Te measured using single and double probes corresponded to the TS measurement. No anomalies in the single probe I–V characteristics, observed in other linear plasma devices [16, 17, 36], appeared under the present condition in the Pilot-PSI device. A possible reason for this difference is discussed by comparing the different linear devices. The OES results are also compared with the simulation results of a collisional radiative (CR) model. Further, we demonstrated more than 90% of parallel particle and heat fluxes were dissipated in a short length of 0.5 m under the high neutral pressure condition in Pilot-PSI., source:Y. We evaluated the two dimensional (2D) distribution of the divertor heat flux in LHD. The Infrared (IR) thermography was performed to measure the surface temperature at a divertor plate. The 3D heat conduction equation was solved using the finite element method (FEM) by taking into account the practical divertor geometry including the heat sink behind the graphite tile and the cooling system. The FEM analysis successfully reconstructs heat load distribution from the measured temperature pattern. Significant difference was found between the temperature and the heat load patterns. The FEM analysis shows that the highest heat deposition is observed at the strike line with 5–10 MWm−2 of ∼ 10 mm width in NBI heated discharge. In addition to the strike line there is also found the lower heat deposition region of ∼ 1 MW m−2 with wide channel width ∼ 30 mm. The detailed heat transport analysis inside the divertor components shows that the heat transport process is different between the strike line and the other region due to the heat channel width and to the divertor component structure. The comparison between the heat flux obtained by the thermography and that by the Langmuir probes shows reasonable agreement, except that the peak value of the heat load is higher in the IR thermography than in the Langmuir probe. We have studied the validity of the double-probe method in recombining plasmas. Electron temperature (Te) measured with a double probe was quantitatively evaluated by taking into account the influences of plasma potential fluctuation, plasma resistivity, and electron density fluctuation on the current–voltage characteristics. Differential potential fluctuation and plasma resistivity between two electrodes have a minor effect on Te especially when the inter-distance is small (typically 1 mm). Scattering of measured Te due to the density fluctuation was sufficiently suppressed by making the data acquisition time long (typically 4 s) and taking the average. We investigated the effects of magnetic field structure on detached plasma formation by simulating magnetically expanding and contracting plasma in a linear plasma device. The present study helps to characterize the geometries of a conventional poloidal divertor and advanced divertors, e.g., super-X divertor. The total ion particle flux measured with a large-diameter target plate dramatically changed under the detached plasma condition compared to that in attached plasma. Under the detached plasma condition, the magnetically expanding plasma clearly exhibited a significant influence on the degradation of detached plasma formation. Further, the magnetically contracting plasma slightly enhanced the electron-ion recombination (EIR) processes. Multi-species impurity seeding is an advanced operation scenario to mitigate the divertor heat load for the realization of future fusion reactors. In the large helical device, divertor detachment is successfully sustained using higher-Z (krypton, Kr) and lower-Z (neon, Ne) superimposed seeding. Emission from Kr impurities is drastically enhanced if it is followed by Ne seeding. Plasma radiation can be enhanced even at the upstream region in the edge plasma compared with Ne only seeded plasmas with suppression of impurity accumulation toward the central plasma. The characteristics of divertor heat load reduction and energy confinement are comparable between the Kr + Ne seeding and Ne only seeding under the same radiation fraction. However, while the detachment in Ne only seeding is transient, the detachment in Kr + Ne seeding is stable. It indicates that multi-species impurity seeding can be competitive for steady-state operation although further investigation is desired about the balance between divertor heat load reduction, impurity screening, and confinement degradation. A plasma flow structure is investigated using a Mach probe under detached plasma condition in a linear plasma device NAGDIS-II. A reverse flow along the magnetic field is observed in a steady-state at far-peripheral region of the plasma column in the upstream side from the recombination front. These experimental results indicate that plasma near the recombination front should strongly diffuse across the magnetic field, and it should be transported along the magnetic field in the reverse flow direction. Furthermore, bursty plasma density fluctuations associated with intermittent convective plasma transport are observed in the far-peripheral region of the plasma column in both upstream and downstream sides from the recombination front. Increasing the neutral pressure to efficiently lead to the electron-ion recombination processes, the electron currents were collected at the ion collector. A secondary electron emission in the guard electrode might have an effect on the ion current.

A solid solution of GaN and ZnO (GaN:ZnO) is promising as a photocatalyst for visible light-driven overall water splitting to produce H2. However, several obstacles still exist in the conventional preparation procedure of GaN:ZnO. For example, the atomic distributions of Zn and Ga are non-uniform in GaN:ZnO when a mixture of the metal oxides, i.e., Ga2O3 and ZnO, is used as a precursor. In addition, GaN:ZnO is generally prepared under harmful NH3 flow for long durations at high temperatures. Here, a facile synthesis of GaN:ZnO with homogeneous atomic composition via a simple and safe procedure is reported. A layered double hydroxide (LDH) containing Zn2+ and Ga3+ was used to increase the uniformity of the atomic distributions of Zn and Ga in GaN:ZnO. We employed urea as a nitriding agent instead of gaseous NH3 to increase the safety of the reaction. Through the optimization of reaction conditions such as heattreatment temperature and content of urea, single-phase GaN:ZnO was successfully obtained. In addition, the nitridation mechanism using urea was investigated in detail. NH3 released from the thermal decomposition of urea did not directly nitride the LDH precursor. The mammalian ubiquitin ligase Hrd1 is the central component of a complex facilitating degradation of misfolded proteins during the ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent process of ER-associated degradation (ERAD). Hrd1 associates with cofactors to execute ERAD, but their roles and how they assemble with Hrd1 are not well understood. Here, we identify crucial cofactor interaction domains within Hrd1 and report a previously unrecognised evolutionarily conserved segment within the intrinsically disordered cytoplasmic domain of Hrd1 (termed the HAF-H domain), which engages complementary segments in the cofactors FAM8A1 and Herp (also known as HERPUD1). This domain is required by Hrd1 to interact with both FAM8A1 and Herp, as well as to assemble higher-order Hrd1 complexes. FAM8A1 enhances binding of Herp to Hrd1, an interaction that is required for ERAD. Our findings support a model of Hrd1 complex formation, where the Hrd1 cytoplasmic domain and FAM8A1 have a central role in the assembly and activity of this ERAD machinery.

The title dispiro hydrocarbon 1 was designed as a new electrochromic material. This multiply clamped hexaphenylethane-type electron donor was prepared from 2,2'-diiodobiphenyl via biphenyl-2,2'-diylbis(dibenzotropylium) 2(2+) salt. X-ray analysis of 1 revealed a highly strained structure as reflected by an elongated ethane bond [bond length: 1.6665(17) angstrom] and nearly eclipsed conformation. The weakened bond was cleaved upon two-electron oxidation to regenerate the deeply colored dication 2(2+). The reversible interconversion between 1 and 2(2+) is accompanied not only by a drastic color change but also by C-C bond formation/cleavage. Thus, the voltammogram showed a pair of well-separated redox waves, which is characteristic of "dynamic redox (dyrex)" behavior. The tetrahydro derivative of 1 with two units of spiro(dibenzocycloheptadiene), which suffers from more severe steric congestion, was also prepared. The crystallographically determined bond length for the central C-C bond [1.705(4) angstrom] is greatest among the values reported for 9,9,10,10-tetraaryl-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene derivatives.

症例は58歳，男性．倦怠感と腹痛を主訴に近医を受診．胸腹部CT検査にて両側肺野に粒状影・空洞性病変を認め，腹部にガス像を伴う巨大な腹腔内膿瘍の所見を認めた．喀痰よりガフキー1号，PCRにて結核菌が検出され，胃液よりガフキー6号を認めた．活動性肺結核および腸結核による消化管穿孔の診断で，腹腔内膿瘍に対して経皮的にドレナージチューブを挿入後，加療目的に当院へ転院となった．腹部症状および腹部所見が軽度であったことや，低栄養状態で結核性腹膜炎による腹腔内の強い炎症および癒着が危惧されたため，先に保存的加療を行い，栄養状態の改善後に手術を施行する方針とした．抗結核薬の投与を開始し，腹腔内膿瘍に対してはドレナージを継続し，抗生剤の投与を行った．腹腔内膿瘍は徐々に縮小・瘻孔化し，第115病日に退院となった．今回，われわれは保存的に治療しえた腸結核による空腸穿孔の1例を経験したので，文献的考察を含めて報告する．

Methods: We studied 65 eyes undergoing vitrectomy for unilateral ERM. Self-administered questionnaires were used to examine the metamorphopsia in their daily life. The degree of metamorphopsia was determined by M-CHARTS. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the best predictor of the changes in metamorphopsia in daily life. To determine the reproducibility of the M-CHARTS score, another set of 56 eyes with ERM was tested twice on two different days. Results: The postoperative changes in the logarithm of the M-CHARTS score was defined as M2-value. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for the M2-value as a predictor of the changes in metamorphopsia in daily life was larger than area under the receiver operating characteristic curve obtained for any other parameter. The optimal cutoff value was -0.4. The 95% limits of agreement between test and retest measurements had a reproducibility of ±0.3 logarithm of the M-CHARTS score. Taking into account not only the reproducibility but also the consistency with the subjective changes, we determined the criterion for clinically significant changes in the M-CHARTS scores as a change of the M2-value by ≥0.4. PAX plasma concentration was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography to confirm adherence.Results: When comparing between the PD and MDD patients with the chi-square test and Fisher’s exact test, the PD patients had a significant and higher discontinuation rate due to nonadherence than did the MDD patients (13.5% [7/52] versus 0% [0/88], respectively; P<0.001). MDD patients had a significant and higher discontinuation rate due to untraceability than PD patients (12.5% [11/88] versus 1.9% [1/52]; P=0.032). Multilogistic regression revealed a tendency for the long/short and short/short genotypes to affect discontinuation due to adverse effects in PD patients (25.0% versus 6.3%, respectively; P=0.054). Conclusion: The results indicate that the 5-HTTLPR genotype might contribute to the discontinuation of initial PAX treatment due to adverse effects in PD patients. Mariko Egawa, Yoshinori Mitamura, Yuki Hayashi, Takeshi NaitoDepartment of Ophthalmology, Institute of Health Biosciences, The University of Tokushima Graduate School, Tokushima, JapanBackground: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the findings on spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) in three eyes with primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL).Methods: The medical records of three eyes from three patients with biopsy-proven PIOL and retinal infiltrations were reviewed. The SD-OCT and fluorescein angiographic findings were evaluated in the three eyes and FAF images in two eyes.Results: The PIOL in the three patients was monocular. Vitreous opacities and retinal infiltrations were observed in the three eyes, and iritis was present in two eyes. The cytologic diagnosis was class V in two eyes and class III in one eye. The interleukin-10/interleukin-6 ratio was >1.0 in the vitreous and aqueous humor of the three eyes. The FAF images for two eyes showed abnormal granular hyperautofluorescence and hypoautofluorescence which were the reverse of the pattern in the fluorescein angiographic images. In all three eyes, SD-OCT showed hyper-reflective infiltrations at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), a separation of the Bruch membrane from the RPE, damage to the RPE, disruption of the photoreceptor inner segment/outer segment junction, and multiple hyper-reflective signals in the inner retina.Conclusion: Because of the characteristic FAF and SD-OCT findings in these eyes with PIOL, we suggest that these noninvasive methods may be used for a rapid diagnosis of PIOL and also for understanding the pathology of PIOL.Keywords: spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, fundus autofluorescence, primary intraocular lymphoma

All yeast was identified by molecular phylogenetic analyses of the chromosomal regions coding for the D1/D2 domain of the large-subunit 26S ribosomal RNA gene. All filamentous fungi were identified by the sequencing of internal transcribed spacers of the ribosomal DNA gene regions. Approximately 0.1 mL of voriconazole diluted with saline to 1.0% was injected with a 30-gauge needle inserted obliquely into the three to five clear cornea sites around the abscess. All subjects were administered natamycin ointment and oral itraconazole. When needed, intravenous micafungin, voriconazole, and/or intracameral voriconazole were added. Clinical courses were observed by the slit lamp microscope. Histopathology was examined when the corneas were removed.Results: All cases that were caused by yeast healed quickly after injections. Two cases of keratitis caused by Fusarium, and one case caused by Aspergillus, did not heal completely. In the Fusarium cases, additional antifungal medications (3.0% topical voriconazole and intravenous injection of micafungin) were needed. After optical penetrating keratoplasty in one of the cases, fungi were found in the deep stroma of the removed cornea. In the case of Aspergillus keratitis, pathological findings also showed fungi deep in the stroma of the removed cornea and the keratitis recurred after therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty.Conclusion: Intrastromal voriconazole injection is successful in treating yeast keratitis. However this is not the case for filamentous

However, the constituent atoms in the wurtzite structure align in an ideal hexagon within the (0001) plane, whereas those in the corundum structure are displaced due to empty octahedral sites. Herein, we demonstrate that this atomic arrangement mismatch at the interface generates low-angle grain boundaries in epilayers, and step bunching of corundum substrates with an even number of molecular layers can eliminate the boundaries. Furthermore, we propose that the weakened epitaxial relationship between epilayers and substrates also eliminates low-angle grain boundaries, which may be useful for practical applications.

水力発電所の貯水池は、河川流量の季節間変動を調整する役割を持っており、出水時には流水を貯留し、渇水時にはその貯えた流水を排出しながら年間を通じて安定して発電が行えるよう、貯水池運用を行うことが望ましい。しかし、水の出水は年によって異なるため、実際には経験的に決まっている年間の貯水池運用計画に基づいて運転していが、必ずしも年間発電電力量が最大になる運用とは限らない。そこで、本研究では電力量の増加と出水リスクのバランスを考慮した合理的な年間貯水池運用計画を定める手法を開発する。
