Conventional seismic techniques for detecting the subsurface geologic features are challenged by limited data coverage, computational inefficiency, and subjective human factors. We developed a novel data-driven geological feature detection approach based on pre-stack seismic measurements. Our detection method employs an efficient and accurate machine-learning detection approach to extract useful subsurface geologic features automatically. Specifically, our method is based on kernel ridge regression model. The conventional kernel ridge regression can be computationally prohibited because of the large volume of seismic measurements. We employ a data reduction technique in combination with the conventional kernel ridge regression method to improve the computational efficiency and reduce memory usage. In particular, we utilize a randomized numerical linear algebra technique, named Nystr\"om method, to effectively reduce the dimensionality of the feature space without compromising the information content required for accurate detection. We provide thorough computational cost analysis to show efficiency of our new geological feature detection methods. We further validate the performance of our new subsurface geologic feature detection method using synthetic surface seismic data for 2D acoustic and elastic velocity models. Our numerical examples demonstrate that our new detection method significantly improves the computational efficiency while maintaining comparable accuracy. Interestingly, we show that our method yields a speed-up ratio on the order of $\sim10^2$ to $\sim 10^3$ in a multi-core computational environment.

Three projects are reported on. Project One, a study of thought categories among Tagalog mother-tongue speakers in and near Manila, draws heavily on the anthropological specialization known as ethnoscience. In the period under review techniques were devised for eliciting responses in the cognitive domains of disease and kinship, and preliminary findings were made. Project Two, a study of conflicting legal concepts in a changing society, reached some understanding of how traditional Tagalog norms for the use of space differ from modern Philippine law on the question. Project Three studies a booming fishing town in central Philippines. Measurement of the thermal properties of a mixture of ethylenimine and its dimer near the eutectic composition has provided needed information for interpreting the premelting region of pure ethylenimine. Tables of values for enthalpy of formation, Gibbs energy of formation, and logarithm of the equilibrium constant of formation of ethylenimine were calculated. Molal thermodynamic functions for the condensed phases of 1,2-diaminoethane and 1,2- diaminopropane were calculated from low-temperature calorimetric measurements. The thermochemical properties of isobutylamine were measured in order to further define C-N bond energy in amines and diamines. Correlations of the thermodynamic properties of hexafluorobenzene were completed from 0 to 1500K., See also Annual technical rept. 1967-1968, AD669369.

The person-to-person components of military assistance programs, the misunderstandings which can develop in the collaborative efforts of American advisors and foreign personnel, are among the more perplexing elements in our attempts to help friendly countries increase their ability to defend themselves. Developing nations need not only equipment but also training and improved organization. We have undertaken a program of supplying men to work with counterparts from the host country, sharing the benefit of our experience, and training others to use and maintain new weapons. In the encounter between an American and a foreign officer there is a need for close understanding and extensive give-and-take of ideas. This paper, concerned with this crucial element of assistance programs, attempts to provide an analysis of recurrent problems, and of attempts to reduce difficulties by selection and orientation of advisors. Some concepts are offered which may be useful in understanding cross- cultural confusions and a number of lines of research are proposed.

The research was concerned with changes in attitudes, values and behavior associated with the modernizing influences of increased education, communication, and industrialization. A traditional style of life which has developed over many generations is being modified by urban, industrial influences. There have been changes in aspirations, family structure, and social control. Four similar communities which were located 50, 100, 200 and 400 kilometers from the capital and major city, Manila, were studied. Within each community 18 men and 18 women from each of three social levels were interviewed, yielding a total of 432 respondents. This design made it possible to determine the relative effects of distance from Manila, sex, and social class on modernity of attitudes. Exposure to modernizing influences was manipulated by selecting near and remote communities., Pub. as Institute of Philippine Culture, IPC papers no. 8.

Criteria are suggested for selection from Navy officers in Vietnam those who might be assigned as advisors to the Vietnamese Navy. While satisfactory criteria of performance of earlier advisors have not been developed, research in the armed forces and in civilian agencies suggests a number of skills which are important. Where these skills are missing, some short-term training is suggested.

Many patterns of behavior among rural Filipinos suggest that they behave toward one another in ways which limit any surplus of goods or money which an individual or a family may accumulate. These leveling activities are seen by the participants as being helpful or equal, as sharing, and as not showing off. The patterns do help when there is an emergency, but they limit an overall improvement in the standard of living. Each individual has a 'right to survive' but not a 'right to get ahead'. An attempt is made to interpret the persistence of subsistence living patterns in terms of avoidance behavior, following the research of R. L. Solomon. The experiments of Solomon show that once a dog has learned an action which enables it to avoid a shock it continues the behavior even though the danger has passed. Furthermore, if the dog receives shocks from which he cannot escape he will show a 'trained helplessness' in which he fails to learn the responses which would enable him to escape subsequent shocks. It is suggested that many of the apparently self-defeating actions of Philippine rural people can be understood in terms of avoidance learning and that remedial steps can be suggested from Solomon's research., Report on The Impact of Modernization in the Philippines. An intelligence test for use with rural Filipinos was developed using 25 general information questions. The questions bear on experiences common to most rural Filipinos. The methods of development and analyses are described. It is suggested that this strategy could be used with other peasant groups where an assessment of intelligence is needed in order to rank members of one or adjacent communities. Continued thermochemical research was carried out on ethylenimine as a substance which showed high ring strain and as the parent compound of possible derivatives containing the ethylenimine ring which might show promise as high energy fuels. Programs of thermochemical research on aliphatic diamines were continued in order to better define the C-N thermochemical bond energy. Determinations of the state properties of the fluorocarbons were continued as a means for deriving their intermolecular energies. Results for ethylenimine include: thermodynamic functions in the ideal gas state to 1500K calculated from spectroscopic parameters; vapor pressure measurements; and derived enthalpies of vaporization. Research on the aliphatic diamines included enthalpies of combustion and formation, the C-N thermochemical bond energy, low-temperature heat capacities, third-law entropies, vapor pressures, and enthalpies of vaporization. Research on the state properties and intermolecular energies of fluorine compounds includes correlated values of the vapor pressure of hexafluorobenzene up to the critical, second and third virial coefficients of hexafluoroethane, and reduction of the P-V-T values for hexafluoroethane to standard data forms. This paper is concerned with theoretical and methodological issues involved in attempting to predict and measure what impact social change has upon the value systems of residents of developing countries. It is hypothesized that strong economic pressures will cause values to shift toward beliefs consistent with a money economy and away from those consistent with a traditional, subsistance, economy. Often, the shift will be masked or muted to permit residents to reconcile reality with an emotionally laden residue from their traditional past. A theory is provided to describe the process of change and to evolve measurable features of it. The remainder of the paper covers in some detail numerous methodological problems encountered in such research. Means of circumventing these problems are also discussed.

Thermochemical research was carried out on ethylenimine, four aliphatic diamines, and two organic fluorine compounds. Results for ethylenimine include an experimental determination of its thermodynamic properties by means of low-temperature calorimetry, combustion calorimetry, and vapor pressure measurements. The measured third-law entropy is discussed in light of a recent Russian value calculated from spectroscopic information. Work on the thermochemistry of aliphatic diamines includes purification of samples of 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane, 1,2-diaminobutane, and 1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane; heats of combustion of 1,2-diaminopropane and 1,2-diamino-2-methylpropane; and some low-temperature thermal measurements on 1,2-diaminopropane. P-V-T relations determined for hexafluoroethane include vapor pressures up to the critical state, critical constants, Pc, Tc, and Vc, and compressibility of the gas up to 350C and 400 atmospheres. Preliminary values for the vapor heat capacity of hexafluorobenzene are presented. (Author)
