A laboratory prototype spectral/spatial interferometer has been constructed to demonstrate the feasibility of the double Fourier technique at Far Infrared (FIR) wavelengths (0.15 - 1 THz). It is planned to use this demonstrator to investigate and validate important design features and data processing methods for future astronomical FIR interferometer instruments. In building this prototype we have had to address several key technologies to provide an end-end system demonstration of this double Fourier interferometer. We report on the first results taken when viewing single slit and double slit sources at the focus of a large collimator used to simulate real sources at infinity. We present the results of radio, optical and near-infrared observations of the field of TOC J0233.3+3021, a cluster of milliJansky radiosources from the TexOx Cluster survey. In an observation of this field with the Ryle Telescope (RT) at 15 GHz, we measure a decrement in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) of $-675 \pm 95 \mu$Jy on the RT's $\approx$ 0.65 k$\lambda$ baseline. Using optical and infrared imaging with the McDonald 2.7-m Smith Reflector, Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope and UKIRT, we identify the host galaxies of five of the radiosources and measure magnitudes of $R \approx 24$, $J \approx 20$, $K \approx 18$. The CMB decrement is consistent with the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect of a massive cluster of galaxies, which if modelled as a spherical King profile of core radius $\theta_C = 20^{\prime\prime}$ has a central temperature decrement of $900 \mu$K. The magnitudes and colours of the galaxies are consistent with those of old ellipticals at $z \sim 1$. We therefore conclude that TOC J0233.3+3021 is a massive, high redshift cluster. These observations add to the growing evidence for a significant population of massive clusters at high redshift, and demonstrate the effectiveness of combining searches for AGN `signposts' to clusters with the redshift-independence of the SZ effect., Comment: Six pages; accepted for publication in MNRAS. We have observed the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect in a sample of five moderate-redshift clusters with the Ryle Telescope, and used them in conjunction with X-ray imaging and spectral data from ROSAT and ASCA to measure the Hubble constant. This sample was chosen with a strict X-ray flux limit using both the BCS and NORAS cluster catalogues to be well above the surface-brightness limit of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, and hence to be unbiased with respect to the orientation of the cluster. This controls the major potential systematic effect in the SZ/X-ray method of measureing H0. Taking the weighted geometric mean of the results and including the main sources of random error, namely the noise in the SZ measurement, the uncertainty in the X-ray temperatures and the unknown ellipticity of the clusters, we find H0 = 59 +8/-7 km/s/Mpc assuming a standard CDM model with Omega_M = 1.0, Omega_Lambda = 0.0, or H0 = 65 +8/-7 km/s/Mpc if Omega_M = 0.3, Omega_Lambda = 0.7., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We describe a maximum-likelihood technique for the removal of contaminating radio sources from interferometric observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. This technique, based on a simultaneous fit for the radio sources and extended SZ emission, is also compared to techniques previously applied to Ryle Telescope observations and is found to be robust. The technique is then applied to new observations of the cluster Abell 611, and a decrement of -540 +/- 125 microJy/beam is found. This is combined with a ROSAT HRI image and a published ASCA temperature to give an Hubble constant estimate of 52+24-16 km/s/Mpc., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures. Submitted to MNRAS

We report on the status of EBEX, a NASA-funded balloon-borne polarimeter designed to measure the B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation. The EBEX receiver is designed to set a 2σ upper limit on an inflationary tensor-to-scalar ratio of 0.02. This limit assumes a 14-day flight, a scan pattern covering 420 square degrees of the sky, and foreground subtraction to levels below detector noise. The instrument employs a 1.5 meter Gregorian-type telescope and 1440 bolometric transition edge sensor detectors distributed over two focal planes. Polarization is measured using a rotating achromatic half wave plate (AHWP) and a fixed polarizing grid. The AHWP is continuously rotated using a superconducting magnetic bearing. Sky signals will be observed in three bands centered at 150, 250 and 410 GHz, providing strong leverage against the polarized dust foreground. Integration of the gondola and the receiver will occur in fall 2008. A short-duration test flight employing 384 detectors in one focal plane is planned for 2009.

FIRI (Far Infrared Interferometer) is a concept for a spatial and spectral interferometer with an operating wavelength range 25-300 μm and sub-arcsecond angular resolution, and is based in the combination of two well-known techniques, Stellar Interferometry and Fourier Transform Spectroscopy to achieve high spectral and spatial resolution in the Far Infrared. The resulting technique is called Double Fourier Spatio-Spectral Interferometry (Mariotti and Ridgway 1988). With increased spatial and spectral resolution a number of interesting science cases such as the formation and evolution of AGN and the characterization of gas, ice and dust in disks undergoing planetary formation, among others, can be investigated. EBEX (the E and B EXperiment) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to measure the polarisation of the cosmic microwave background radiation. During a two week long duration science flight over Antarctica, EBEX will operate 768, 384 and 280 spider-web transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers at 150, 250 and 410 GHz, respectively. The 10-hour EBEX engineering flight in June 2009 over New Mexico and Arizona provided the first usage of both a large array of TES bolometers and a Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) based multiplexed readout in a space-like environment. This successful demonstration increases the technology readiness level of these bolometers and the associated readout system for future space missions. A total of 82, 49 and 82 TES detectors were operated during the engineering flight at 150, 250 and 410 GHz. The sensors were read out with a new SQUID-based digital frequency domain multiplexed readout system that was designed to meet the low power consumption and robust autonomous operation requirements presented by a balloon experiment. Here we describe the system and the remote, automated tuning of the bolometers and SQUIDs. We compare results from tuning at float to ground, and discuss bolometer performance during flight

The E and B Experiment, EBEX, is a Cosmic Microwave Background polarization experiment designed to detector set upper limits on the signature of primordial gravity waves. Primordial gravity waves are predicted to beproduced by inflation, and a measurement of the power spectrum of these gravity waves is a measurement ofthe energy scale of inflation. EBEX has sufficient sensitivity to detect or set an upper limit at 95% confidenceon the energy scale of inflation of < 1.4 × 1016 GeV. This article reviews our strategy for achieving our sciencegoals and discusses the implementation of the instrument.

We present the design and measured performance of the superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) that was used successfully as the rotation mechanism in the half-wave plate polarimeter of the E and B Experiment (EBEX) during its North American test flight. EBEX is a NASA-supported balloon-borne experiment that is designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background. In this implementation the half-wave plate is mounted to the rotor of an SMB that is operating at the sink temperature of 4 K. We demonstrate robust, remote operation on a balloon-borne payload, with angular encoding accuracy of 0.01°. We find rotational speed variation to be 0.2% RMS. We measure vibrational modes and find them to be consistent with a simple SMB model. We search for but do not find magnetic field interference in the detectors and readout. We set an upper limit of 3% of the receiver noise level after 5 minutes of integration on such interference. At 2 Hz rotation we measure a power dissipation of 56 mW. If this power dissipation is reduced, such an SMB implementation is a candidate for low-noise space applications because of the absence of stick-slip friction and low wear.

EBEX is a NASA-funded balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Observations will be made using 1432 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometric detectors read out with frequency multiplexed SQuIDs. EBEX will observe in three frequency bands centered at 150, 250, and 410 GHz, with 768, 384, and 280 detectors in each band, respectively. This broad frequency coverage is designed to provide valuable information about polarized foreground signals from dust. The polarized sky signals will be modulated with an achromatic half wave plate (AHWP) rotating on a superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) and analyzed with a fixed wire grid polarizer. EBEX will observe a patch covering ~1% of the sky with 8' resolution, allowing for observation of the angular power spectrum from l = 20 to 1000. This will allow EBEX to search for both the primordial B-mode signal predicted by inflation and the anticipated lensing B-mode signal. Calculations to predict EBEX constraints on r using expected noise levels show that, for a likelihood centered around zero and with negligible foregrounds, 99% of the area falls below r = 0.035. This value increases by a factor of 1.6 after a process of foreground subtraction. This estimate does not include systematic uncertainties. An engineering flight was launched in June, 2009, from Ft. Sumner, NM, and the long duration science flight in Antarctica is planned for 2011. These proceedings describe the EBEX instrument and the North American engineering flight.

Observations of the temperature anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) lend support to an inflationary origin of the universe, yet no direct evidence verifying inflation exists. Many current experiments are focussing on the CMB's polarization anisotropy, specifically its curl component (called "B-mode" polarization), which remains undetected. The inflationary paradigm predicts the existence of a primordial gravitational wave background that imprints a unique B-mode signature on the CMB's polarization at large angular scales. The CMB B-mode signal also encodes gravitational lensing information at smaller angular scales, bearing the imprint of cosmological large scale structures (LSS) which in turn may elucidate the properties of cosmological neutrinos. The quest for detection of these signals; each of which is orders of magnitude smaller than the CMB temperature anisotropy signal, has motivated the development of background-limited detectors with precise control of systematic effects. The POLARBEAR experiment is designed to perform a deep search for the signature of gravitational waves from inflation and to characterize lensing of the CMB by LSS. POLARBEAR is a 3.5 meter ground-based telescope with 3.8 arcminute angular resolution at 150 GHz. At the heart of the POLARBEAR receiver is an array featuring 1274 antenna-coupled superconducting transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers cooled to 0.25 Kelvin. POLARBEAR is designed to reach a tensor-to-scalar ratio of 0.025 after two years of observation -- more than an order of magnitude improvement over the current best results, which would test physics at energies near the GUT scale. POLARBEAR had an engineering run in the Inyo Mountains of Eastern California in 2010 and will begin observations in the Atacama Desert in Chile in 2011.

We discuss the Clover cryostats, which are dry cryostats containing three stages of cooling; a pulse tube cooler, a sorption fridge and a continuous miniature dilution refrigerator. We describe the thermal architecture of the system and present thermal data for the various stages including its performance when tilted.
