Abstract: The electromagnetic transition probabilities of the yrast 2+ states in the midshell Te isotopes, two protons above the closed shell at Sn, are of great importance for the understanding of nuclear collectivity in these isotopes and the role played by the neutron-proton interactions and cross-shell excitations. However, the large uncertainty of the experimental data for the midshell nucleus Te-118 and the missing data for Te-116 make it difficult to pin down the general trend of the evolution of transition probabilities as a function of the neutron number. In this work, the lifetime of the yrast 2(+) state in Te-118 was measured, with the aim of reducing the uncertainty of the previous measurement. The result is tau(2+)=7.46(19) ps. In addition, the lifetime of the 4(+) state was measured to be tau(4+)=4.25(23) ps. The experimental transition rates are extracted from the measured lifetimes and compared with systematic large-scale shell-model calculations. The trend of the B(E2;0(+)-> 2(+)) values in the midshell area is in good agreement with the calculations and the calculated B-4/2 ratio provide evidence for Te-118 as a near perfect harmonic vibrator.

Abstract: Lifetime measurements in \(^{178}\)Pt with excited states de-exciting through \(\gamma\)-ray transitions and internal electron conversions have been performed. Ionic charges were selected by the in-flight mass separator MARA and measured at the focal plane in coincidence with the \(4^{+}_{1}→2^{+}_{1}\) 257 keV γ-ray transition detected using the JUROGAM 3 spectrometer. The resulting charge-state distributions were analysed using the differential decay curve method (DDCM) framework to obtain a lifetime value of 430(20) ps for the \(2^{+}_{1}\) state. This work builds on a method that combines the charge plunger technique with the DDCM analysis. As an alternative analysis, ions were selected in coincidence with the \(^{178}\)Pt alpha decay (\(E_{\mathrm {alpha}} = 5.458(5)\) MeV) at the focal plane. Lifetime information was obtained by fitting a two-state Bateman equation to the decay curve with the lifetime of individual states defined by a single quadrupole moment. This yielded a lifetime value of 430(50) ps for the \(2^{+}_{1}\) state, and 54(6) ps for the \(4^{+}_{1}\) state. An analysis method based around the Bateman equation will become especially important when using the charge plunger method for the cases where utilising coincidences between prompt \(\gamma\) rays and recoils is not feasible.

Abstract: Two new excited bands built on the πh11/2 configuration have been identified in ¹³⁵Nd in addition to the known πh11/2 band. The energy spectra of the excited bands and the available electromagnetic transition probabilities are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations. The properties of the bands identify them as tilted precession bands instead of wobbling bands. Our results give a new insight into the interpretation of the low-lying bands in odd-A mass nuclei, and can stimulate future studies to address the nuclear triaxiality.

Abstract: Lifetimes of low-lying excited states in the nu i(13/2+) bands of the neutron-deficient osmium isotopes 169,171,173Os have been measured for the first time using the recoil-distance Doppler shift and recoil-isomer tagging techniques. An unusually low value is observed for the ratio B(E2; 21/2(+) -> 17/2+)/B(E2; 17/2+ -> 13/2+) in 169Os, similar to the anomalously low values of the ratio B(E2; 4+1 -> 2+1 )/B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+)) previously observed in several transitional rare-earth nuclides with even numbers of neutrons and protons, including the neighbouring 168,170Os. Furthermore, the evolution of B(E2; 21/2(+) -> 17/2(+))/B(E2; 17/2(+) -> 13/2(+)) with increasing neutron number in the odd-mass isotopic chain 169,171,173Os is observed to follow the same trend as observed previously in the eveneven Os isotopes. These findings indicate that the possible quantum phase transition from a seniority conserving structure to a collective regime as a function of neutron number suggested for the even-even systems is maintained in these odd-mass osmium nuclei, with the odd valence neutron merely acting as a spectator. As for the even-even nuclei, the phenomenon is highly unexpected for nuclei that are not situated near closed shells. (C) 2021 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Lifetime informationwas obtained by fitting a two-state Bateman equation to the decay curve with the lifetime of individual states defined by a single quadrupolemoment. This yielded a lifetime value of 430(50) ps for the 2(1)(+) state, and 54(6) ps for the 4(1)(+) state. An analysis method based around the Bateman equation will become especially important when using the charge plunger method for the cases where utilising coincidences between prompt gamma rays and recoils is not feasible.

Abstract: The mean lifetimes of the lowest energy 2(+), 8(+) and 9(-) states in Os-166 have been measured using the recoil distance Doppler-shift method in conjunction with a selective recoil-decay tagging technique. These measurements extend studies into the most neutron-deficient mass region accessible to current experimental methods. The B(E2; 2(+) -> 0(+)) = 7(2) W.u. extracted from these measurements is markedly lower than those observed in the heavier even-mass Os isotopes. The 8(+) and 9(-) states yield reduced transition probabilities that are consistent with single-particle transitions. While these values may indicate a departure from collective structure, the level scheme and the underlying nuclear configurations can also be interpreted in terms of a simple collective picture. This contrasting behaviour suggests an intriguing dichotomy in the description of heavy transitional nuclei., QC 20211101

An unusually low value is observed for the ratio B(E2; 21/2⁺ → 17/2⁺) /B(E2; 17/2⁺ → 13/2⁺) in 169Os, similar to the “anomalously” low values of the ratio B(E2; 4⁺1 → 2⁺1 )/B(E2; 2⁺1 → 0⁺gs) previously observed in several transitional rare-earth nuclides with even numbers of neutrons and protons, including the neighboring 168,170Os. Furthermore, the evolution of B(E2; 21/2⁺→ 17/2⁺)/B(E2; 17/2⁺ → 13/2⁺) with increasing neutron number in the odd-mass isotopic chain 169,171,173Os is observed to follow the same trend as observed previously in the even-even Os isotopes. These findings indicate that the possible quantum phase transition from a seniority conserving structure to a collective regime as a function of neutron number suggested for the even-even systems is maintained in these odd-mass osmium nuclei, with the odd valence neutron merely acting as a “spectator”. As for the even-even nuclei, the phenomenon is highly unexpected for nuclei that are not situated near closed shells.

Abstract: Lifetime measurements in Pt-178 with excited states de-exciting through gamma-ray transitions and internal electron conversions have been performed. Ionic charges were selected by the in-flight mass separatorMARAand measured at the focal plane in coincidence with the 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+) 257 keV gamma-ray transition detected using the JUROGAM 3 spectrometer. The resulting charge-state distributions were analysed using the differential decay curve method (DDCM) framework to obtain a lifetime value of 430(20) ps for the 2(1)(+) state. This work builds on a method that combines the charge plunger technique with the DDCM analysis. As an alternative analysis, ions were selected in coincidence with the Pt-178 alpha decay (E-alpha = 5.458(5) MeV) at the focal plane. Abstract: A charge plunger device has been commissioned based on the DPUNS plunger (Taylor et al., 2013) using the in-flight mass separator MARA at the University of Jyväskylä. The ¹⁵²Sm(³²S,4n)¹⁸⁰ reaction was used to populate excited states in ¹⁸⁰. A lifetime measurement of the state \(2_1^+\) was performed by applying the charge plunger technique, which relies on the detection of the charge state-distribution of recoils rather than the detection of the emitted γ rays. This state was a good candidate to test the charge plunger technique as it has a known lifetime and depopulates through a converted transition that competes strongly with γ-ray emission. The lifetime of the \(2_1^+\) state was measured to be 480(10)ps, which is consistent with previously reported lifetimes that relied on the standard γ-ray techniques. The charge plunger technique is a complementary approach to lifetime measurements of excited states that depopulate through both γ-ray emission and internal conversion. In cases where it is not possible to detect Doppler-shifted γ rays, for example, in heavy nuclei where internal conversion dominates, it may well be the only feasible lifetime analysis approach.

Abstract: The odd-Z ²⁵¹Md nucleus was studied using combined γ-ray and conversion-electron in-beam spectroscopy. Besides the previously observed rotational band based on the [521]1/2⁻ configuration, another rotational structure has been identified using γ−γ coincidences. The use of electron spectroscopy allowed the rotational bands to be observed over a larger rotational frequency range. Using the transition intensities that depend on the gyromagnetic factor, a [514]7/2⁻ single-particle configuration has been inferred for this band, i.e., the ground-state band. A physical background that dominates the electron spectrum with an intensity of ≃60% was well reproduced by simulating a set of unresolved excited bands. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the intensity profile as a function of the angular momentum provided a method for deriving the orbital gyromagnetic factor, namely \(g_{K}=0.69^{+0.19}_{−0.16}\) for the ground-state band. The odd-Z ²⁴⁹Md was studied using γ-ray in-beam spectroscopy. Evidence for octupole correlations resulting from the mixing of the Δl=Δj=3 [521]3/2⁻ and [633]7/2⁺ Nilsson orbitals were found in both ²⁴⁹,²⁵¹Md. A surprising similarity of the²⁵¹Md ground-state band transition energies with those of the excited band of ²⁵⁵Lr has been discussed in terms of identical bands. Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations were performed to investigate the origin of the similarities between these bands.

Abstract: Excited states in the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus 172Pt were populated via 96Ru(78Kr,2p) and 92Mo(83Kr,3n) reactions. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of ~ 5 MeV and tentative spin-parity assignments up to Iπ = 18+. Linear polarization and angular distribution measurements were used to determine the electromagnetic E1 character of the dipole transitions connecting the positive-parity ground-state band with an excited side-band, firmly establishing it as a negative-parity band. The lowest member of this negative-parity structure was firmly assigned spin-parity 3-. In addition, we observed an E3 transition from this 3- state to the ground state, providing direct evidence for octupole collectivity in 172Pt. Large-scale shell model (LSSM) and total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations have been performed, supporting the interpretation of the 3- state as a collective octupole-vibrational state., QC 20200427

Abstract: Excited states in the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus 172Pt were populated via 96Ru(78Kr,2p) and 92Mo(83Kr,3n) reactions. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of ~ 5 MeV and tentative spin-parity assignments up to Iπ = 18+. Linear polarization and angular distribution measurements were used to determine the electromagnetic E1 character of the dipole transitions connecting the positive-parity ground-state band with an excited side-band, firmly establishing it as a negative-parity band. The lowest member of this negative-parity structure was firmly assigned spin-parity 3-. In addition, we observed an E3 transition from this 3- state to the ground state, providing direct evidence for octupole collectivity in 172Pt. Abstract: High-spin states in the N = 128 nucleus ²¹⁸Th have been investigated following fusion–evaporation reactions, using the recoil-decay tagging technique. Due to the short-lived nature of the ground state of ²¹⁸Th prompt γ rays have been correlated with the α decay of the daughter nucleus ²¹⁴Ra. The level scheme representing the decay of excited states has been extended to (16⁺) with the observation of six previously unreported transitions. The observations are compared with the results of shell model calculations and within the context of the systematics of neighbouring nuclei.

Abstract: A charge plunger device has been commissioned based on the DPUNS plunger (Taylor a al., 2013) using the in-flight mass separator MARA at the University of Jyvaskyla. The Sm-152(S-32,4n)Pt-180 reaction was used to populate excited states in Pt-180. A lifetime measurement of the 2(1)(+ )state was performed by applying the charge plunger technique, which relies on the detection of the charge state-distribution of recoils rather than the detection of the emitted gamma rays. This state was a good candidate to test the charge plunger technique as it has a known lifetime and depopulates through a converted transition that competes strongly with gamma-ray emission. The lifetime of the 2(1)(+) state was measured to be 480(10) ps, which is consistent with previously reported lifetimes that relied on the standard gamma-ray techniques. The charge plunger technique is a complementary approach to lifetime measurements of excited states that depopulate through both gamma-ray emission and internal conversion. In cases where it is not possible to detect Doppler-shifted gamma rays, for example, in heavy nuclei where internal conversion dominates, it may well be the only feasible lifetime analysis approach.

Abstract: Two new bands have been identified in 137Nd from a high-statistics JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment. Constrained density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations are used to assign configurations and investigate the band properties, which are well described and understood. It is demonstrated that these two new bands can be interpreted as chiral partners of previously known three-quasiparticle positive- and negative-parity bands. The newly observed chiral doublet bands in 137Nd represent an important support to the existence of multiple chiral bands in nuclei. The present results constitute the missing stone in the series of Nd nuclei showing multiple chiral bands, which becomes the most extended sequence of odd–even and even-even nuclei presenting multiple chiral bands in the Segré chart., QC 20220614

Abstract: Excited states in the extremely neutron-deficient nucleus Pt-172 were populated via Ru-96(Kr-78, 2p) and Mo-92(Kr-83, 3n) reactions. The level scheme has been extended up to an excitation energy of approximate to 5MeV and tentative spin-parity assignments up to I-pi = 18(+). Linear polarization and angular distribution measurements were used to determine the electromagnetic E1 character of the dipole transitions connecting the positive-parity ground-state band with an excited side-band, firmly establishing it as a negativeparity band. The lowestmember of this negative-parity structure was firmly assigned spin-parity 3(-). In addition, we observed an E3 transition from this 3(-) state to the ground state, providing direct evidence for octupole collectivity in Pt-172. Large-scale shell model (LSSM) and total Routhian surface (TRS) calculations have been performed, supporting the interpretation of the 3(-) state as a collective octupole-vibrational state.

Abstract: A charge plunger device has been commissioned based on the DPUNS plunger (Taylor a al., 2013) using the in-flight mass separator MARA at the University of Jyvaskyla. The Sm-152(S-32,4n)Pt-180 reaction was used to populate excited states in Pt-180. A lifetime measurement of the 2(1)(+ )state was performed by applying the charge plunger technique, which relies on the detection of the charge state-distribution of recoils rather than the detection of the emitted gamma rays. This state was a good candidate to test the charge plunger technique as it has a known lifetime and depopulates through a converted transition that competes strongly with gamma-ray emission. The lifetime of the 2(1)(+) state was measured to be 480(10) ps, which is consistent with previously reported lifetimes that relied on the standard gamma-ray techniques. The charge plunger technique is a complementary approach to lifetime measurements of excited states that depopulate through both gamma-ray emission and internal conversion. In cases where it is not possible to detect Doppler-shifted gamma rays, for example, in heavy nuclei where internal conversion dominates, it may well be the only feasible lifetime analysis approach.

Abstract: Electric quadrupole matrix elements, Mp, for the Jπ=2+→0+, ΔT=0, T=1 transitions across the A=46 isobaric multiplet 46Cr-46V-46Ti have been measured at GSI with the FRS-LYCCA-AGATA setup. This allows direct insight into the isospin purity of the states of interest by testing the linearity of Mp with respect to Tz. Pairs of nuclei in the T=1 triplet were studied using identical reaction mechanisms in order to control systematic errors. The Mp values were obtained with two different methodologies: (i) a relativistic Coulomb excitation experiment was performed for 46Cr and 46Ti; (ii) a “stretched target” technique was adopted here, for the first time, for lifetime measurements in 46V and 46Ti. A constant value of Mp across the triplet has been observed. Shell-model calculations performed within the fp shell fail to reproduce this unexpected trend, pointing towards the need of a wider valence space. This result is confirmed by the good agreement with experimental data achieved with an interaction which allows excitations from the underlying sd shell. A test of the linearity rule for all published data on complete T=1 isospin triplets is presented.

Abstract: One new pair of positive-parity chiral doublet bands have been identified in the odd-A nucleus 135Nd which together with the previously reported negative-parity chiral doublet bands constitute a third case of multiple chiral doublet (MχD) bands in the A≈130 mass region. The properties of the MχD bands are well reproduced by constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. The newly observed MχD bands in 135Nd represents an important milestone in supporting the existence of MχD in nuclei.

Abstract: The new nuclides \(^{165}\mathrm{Pt}\) and \(^{170}\mathrm{Hg}\) were produced in the reactions \(^{92}\mathrm{Mo}(^{78}\mathrm{Kr},5n)\) and \(^{96}\mathrm{Ru}(^{78}\mathrm{Kr},4n)\) at bombarding energies of 418 MeV and 390 MeV, respectively. For \(^{170}\mathrm{Hg}\) an α-particle energy of \(E_{α} = 7590(30)\) keV and half-life of \(t_{1/2} = 0.08^{+0.40}_{−0.04}\)ms were deduced, while for \(^{165}\mathrm{Pt}\) the corresponding values were 7272(14) keV and \(0.26^{+0.26}_{−0.09}\)ms. Comparison of the reduced α-decay widths with systematics indicates that both α decays are unhindered. Although combining the measured α-decay Q values with extrapolated masses suggests that both new nuclides are unbound to two-proton emission by more than 1 MeV, their α-decay half-lives are too short for this decay mode to compete. Improved data were also obtained for \(^{166,167}\mathrm{Pt}\), produced via the \(^{96}\mathrm{Ru}(^{78}\mathrm{Kr},α4n)\) and \(^{96}\mathrm{Ru}(^{78}\mathrm{Kr},α3n)\) reactions at bombarding energies of 390 MeV and 418 MeV.

Abstract: Lifetime measurements of excited states in ¹⁷⁸Hg have been performed using the ¹⁰³Rh(⁷⁸Kr,p2n) reaction at a beam energy of 354 MeV. The recoil-decay tagging (RDT) technique was applied to select the ¹⁷⁸Hg nuclei and associate the prompt γ rays with the correlated characteristic ground-state α decay. Lifetimes of the four lowest yrast states of ¹⁷⁸Hg have been determined using the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method. The experimental data are compared to theoretical predictions with focus on shape coexistence. The results confirm the shift of the deformed prolate structures to higher lying states but also indicate their increasing deformation with decreasing neutron number.

Abstract: A sequence of nine almost equidistant quadrupole transitions is observed in Nd-137. The sequence represents an extremely regular rotational band that extends to a spin of about 75/2 and an excitation energy of approximate to 4.5 MeV above yrast. Cranked mean-field calculations of the Nilsson-Strutinsky type suggest an oblate shape for the band. They reproduce the observed I(I +1) dependence of the rotational energy whereas predicting a pronounced decrease in the deformation, which is the hallmark of antimagnetic rotation., QC 20190426

Abstract: The neutron-deficient mercury isotopes serve as a classical example of shape coexistence, whereby at low energy near-degenerate nuclear states characterized by different shapes appear. The electromagnetic structure of even-mass 182-188 Hg isotopes was studied using safe-energy Coulomb excitation of neutron-deficient mercury beams delivered by the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The population of 0 + 1,2, 2(1,2)(+) and 4(1)(+) states was observed in all nuclei under study. Reduced E2 matrix elements coupling populated yrast and non-yrast states were extracted, including their relative signs. These are a sensitive probe of shape coexistence and may be used to validate nuclear models. The experimental results are discussed in terms of mixing of two different configurations and are compared with three different model calculations: the Beyond Mean Field model, the Interacting Boson Model with configuration mixing and the General Bohr Hamiltonian. Partial agreement with experiment was observed, hinting to missing ingredients in the theoretical descriptions.

Abstract: This letter reports lifetime measurements of excited states in the odd-N nucleus W-163 using the recoil-distance Doppler shift method to probe the core polarising effect of the i(13/2) neutron orbital on the underlying soft triaxial even-even core. The ratio B(E2:21/2(+) -> 17/2(+))/B(E2:17/2(+) -> 13/2(+)) is consistent with the predictions of the collective rotational model. The deduced B(E2) values provide insights into the validity of collective model predictions for heavy transitional nuclei and a geometric origin for the anomalous B(E2) ratios observed in nearby even-even nuclei is proposed. Abstract: A sequence of nine almost equidistant quadrupole transitions is observed in Nd137. The sequence represents an extremely regular rotational band that extends to a spin of about 75/2 and an excitation energy of ≈4.5MeV above yrast. Cranked mean-field calculations of the Nilsson-Strutinsky type suggest an oblate shape for the band. They reproduce the observed I(I+1) dependence of the rotational energy whereas predicting a pronounced decrease in the deformation, which is the hallmark of antimagnetic rotation., QC 20220614

Abstract: Norway spruce is a boreal forest tree species of significant ecological and economic importance. Hence there is a strong imperative to dissect the genetics underlying important wood quality traits in the species. We performed a functional genome‐wide association study (GWAS) of 17 wood traits in Norway spruce using 178 101 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) generated from exome genotyping of 517 mother trees. The wood traits were defined using functional modelling of wood properties across annual growth rings. We applied a Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO‐based) association mapping method using a functional multilocus mapping approach that utilizes latent traits, with a stability selection probability method as the hypothesis testing approach to determine a significant quantitative trait locus. The analysis provided 52 significant SNPs from 39 candidate genes, including genes previously implicated in wood formation and tree growth in spruce and other species. Our study represents a multilocus GWAS for complex wood traits in Norway spruce. The results advance our understanding of the genetics influencing wood traits and identifies candidate genes for future functional studies.

Abstract: Lifetime measurements of excited states in Hg-178 have been performed using the Rh-103(Kr-78, p2n) reaction at a beam energy of 354 MeV. The recoil-decay tagging (RDT) technique was applied to select the Hg-178 nuclei and associate the prompt gamma rays with the correlated characteristic ground-state alpha decay. Lifetimes of the four lowest yrast states of Hg-178 have been determined using the recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) method. The experimental data are compared to theoretical predictions with focus on shape coexistence. The results confirm the shift of the deformed prolate structures to higher lying states but also indicate their increasing deformation with decreasing neutron number.

Abstract: The level structure of ¹³⁶Nd has been investigated using the ¹⁰⁰Mo(⁴⁰Ar, 4n) reaction and the JUROGAM II+RITU+GREAT setup. The level scheme has been extended significantly. Many new bands have been identified both at low and high spin, among which are five nearly degenerate bands interpreted as chiral partners. Excitation energies, spins, and parities of the previously known bands are revised and firmly established, and some previously known bands have been revised. Configurations are assigned to the observed bands based on cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The band structure of ¹³⁶Nd is now clarified and the various types of single-particle and collective excitations are well understood.

Abstract: Excited states above the 17⁺ isomeric state in the proton-rich nucleus ¹⁵²Tm were established by employing the recoil-isomer tagging technique. Data were collected using the JUROGAM gamma-ray array and the GREAT spectrometer together with the recoil ion transport unit (RITU) gas-filled recoil separator and analyzed to identify the prompt and delayed γ decays from the levels in ¹⁵²Tm. Shell-model calculations, either in a large valence space or in a reduced model space with five protons in the π0h₁₁/₂ orbital and one neutron in the ν1f₇/₂ orbital, agree with the observed energies of the yrast levels up to angular momentum J = 21. The observation of near degeneracies in the energy spectrum can be attributed to specific components of the proton-neutron interaction. The isomeric decay of the 17⁺ level is not reproduced in the shell-model calculations as it arises from a delicate balance between hindrance due to seniority selection rules and enhancement due to configuration mixing.

Abstract: Using fusion-evaporation reactions, a gas-filled recoil separator, recoil-gating technique and recoil-isomer decay tagging technique we have extended the level scheme of ²⁰³At (N = 118) significantly. We have observed an isomeric [τ=14.1(3)μs] state with a spin and parity of 29/2+. The isomeric state is suggested to originate from the π(h9/2)⊗∣∣²⁰²Po;11⁻⟩ coupling, and it is depopulated through 286 keV E2 and 366 keV E3 transitions. In addition, we have observed a cascade of magnetic-dipole transitions which is suggested to be generated by the shears mechanism.

Abstract: Lifetimes of the first excited 2(+) and 4(+) states in the extremely neutron -deficient nuclide Pt-172 have been measured for the first time using the recoil-distance Doppler shift and recoil-decay tagging techniques. An unusually low value of the ratio B(E2: 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+)/B(E2: 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+)) = 0.55(19) was found, similar to a handful of other such anomalous cases observed in the entire Segre chart. The observation adds to a cluster of a few extremely neutron -deficient nuclides of the heavy transition metals with neutron numbers N approximate to 90-94 featuring the effect. No theoretical model calculations reported to date have been able to explain the anomalously low B(E2: 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+)/B(E2: 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+)) ratios observed in these cases. Such low values cannot, e.g., be explained within the framework of the geometrical collective model or by algebraic approaches within the interacting boson model framework. It is proposed that the group of B(E2: 4(1)(+) -> 2(1)(+)/B(E2: 2(1)(+) -> 0(gs)(+)) ratios in the extremely neutron-deficient even-even W, Os, and Pt nuclei around neutron numbers N approximate to 90-94 reveal a quantum phase transition from a seniority-conserving structure to a collective regime as a function of neutron number. Although a system governed by seniority symmetry is the only theoretical framework for which such an effect may naturally occur, the phenomenon is highly unexpected for these nuclei that are not situated near closed shells., QC 20180801

Abstract: Evidence for chiral doublet bands has been observed for the first time in the even-even nucleus Nd136. One chiral band was firmly established. Four other candidates for chiral bands were also identified, which can contribute to the realization of the multiple pairs of chiral doublet bands (MχD) phenomenon. The observed bands are investigated by the constrained and tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory (TAC-CDFT). Possible configurations have been explored. The experimental energy spectra, angular momenta, and B(M1)/B(E2) values for the assigned configurations are globally reproduced by TAC-CDFT. Calculated results support the chiral interpretation of the observed bands, which correspond to shapes with maximum triaxiality induced by different multiquasiparticle configurations in Nd136., QC 20180605

Abstract: A multiparticle spin-trap isomeric state having a half-life of 179(4) ns and lying 2601 keV above the yrast 10(+) state in Lu-156 has been discovered. The Lu-156 nuclei were produced by bombarding isotopically enriched Cd-106 targets with beams of Ni-58 ions, separated in flight using the gas-filled separator RITU and their decays were measured using the GREAT spectrometer. Analysis of the main decay path that populates yrast states observed previously suggests a spin-parity assignment of 19(-) for the isomeric state, which is consistent with isomeric states identified in the N = 85 isotones. Comparison with other decay paths in Lu-156 indicates that the [pi h(11/)(2)(-1) circle times nu h(9/2)]10(+) state at the bottom of the yrast sequence is likely to be the a-decaying isomeric state, with the [pi h(11/)(2)(-1) circle times nu f(7/2)]9(+) state lying 62 keV above it. The relative ordering of the lowest-lying 9(+) and 10(+) states is inverted in Lu-156 compared with its odd-odd isotones., QC 20180821

Abstract: Fine structure in the a decay of high-spin isomers in Lu-155( 25/2(-)) and Hf-156(8(+))has been studied for the first time using alpha gamma- coincidence analysis. Three new a decays from Lu-155(25/2(-)) and two from Hf-156(8(+)) have been identified, populating seniority s > 1 states in the N = 82 nuclei Tm-151 and Yb-152, respectively. The reduced hindrance factors of the a decays support the previous configuration assignments of the populated states. This is the first observation of states with excitation energy greater than 1.5 MeV being populated following a decay in nuclei outside of the Pb-208 region., QC 20181218

Abstract: Using fusion-evaporation reactions, a gas-filled recoil separator, recoil-gating technique and recoil-isomer decay tagging technique we have extended the level scheme of At-203 (N = 118) significantly. We have observed an isomeric [tau = 14.1(3) mu s] state with a spin and parity of 29/2(+). The isomeric state is suggested to originate from the pi(h(9/2)) circle times |Po-202; 11(-)> coupling, and it is depopulated through 286 keV E2 and 366 keV E3 transitions. In addition, we have observed a cascade of magnetic-dipole transitions which is suggested to be generated by the shears mechanism., QC 20180219
