A simple and highly sensitive approach was performed to synthesize a selective sulfaguanidine (SG) sensor based on a molecularly imprinted electropolymer of acrylamide (PAM) for honey quality control. SG was detected by measurements of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). These techniques were applied successfully to determine SG with an excellent selectivity when compared to the results of interfering compounds. Furthermore, unprecedented, ultra-low limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 0.20 pg·mL−1 and 0.67 pg·mL−1, respectively according to DPV measurements and 0.17 pg·mL−1 and 0.57 pg·mL−1 according to EIS measurements. The proposed approach is found to be inexpensive, selective and very sensitive, thanks to the good biocompatibility of SG/PAM composite. The results also showed that this sensor was successfully applied to detect SG residues in honey samples with recoveries between 83.9% and 99.7% and had the potential to be further developed for other multiple analytes detection, thus offering an emerging horizon for bio-sensing applications in honey quality control.

Plant viral capsid proteins (CP) can be involved in virus movement, replication and symptom development as a result of their interaction with host factors. The identification of such interactions may thus provide information about viral pathogenesis. In this study, Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) CP was used as bait to screen a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cDNA library for potential interactors in yeast. Of seven independent interacting clones, six were predicted to encode the C-termini of the heat shock cognate 70 (Hsc70) proteins. Three full length tomato Hsc70s (named Hsc70.1, .2, .3) were used to confirm the interaction in the yeast two hybrid assay and bimolecular fluorescent complementation (BiFC) in planta. The PepMV CP–Hsc70 interaction was confirmed only in the case of Hsc70.3 for both assays. In BiFC, the interaction was visualized in the cytoplasm and nucleus of agroinfiltrated Nicotiana benthamiana epidermal cells. During PepMV infection, Hsc70.3 mRNA levels were induced and protein accumulation increased at 48 and 72 h post inoculation. In transmission electron microscopy using immunogold labelling techniques, Hsc70 was detected to co-localize with virions in the phloem of PepMV-infected tomato leaves. These observations, together with the co-purification of Hsc70 with PepMV virions further support the notion of a PepMV CP/Hsc70 interaction during virus infection

This paper investigates whether involvement in mergers and acquisitions (M&As) triggers distinct patterns of innovative behaviour across firms situated at different points on the firm size distribution. Firms use more and more M&As as mechanisms to bridge the gap between where they are and what they want to achieve in terms of innovation and performance. We explore the different impact of M&A activity on the likelihood that firms begin to innovate using an unique dataset combining innovation and economic firm-level data from two different sources: the 4 waves of Community Innovation Survey and the Business Register, for the Dutch manufacturing sector. The analysis is carried out at different size classes. The results show that both new entry and persistence in innovative activities are fostered by M&A involvement. Medium firms are the ones showing the highest probabilities of entering /persisting in innovative activities after M&As. For small firms, M&As do not ease the overcome of “the innovative threshold”; on the contrary they seem to increase the probability of exiting innovative status in the post-merger period.

The detection of dopamine by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) at the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) has been studied. Voltammetry at the liquid/liquid (water/1,2-dichloroethane) interface provides a simple method for overcoming the major problem associated with dopamine detection by voltammetry at solid electrodes: the co-existence of ascorbate at higher concentrations. Selectivity for dopamine was achieved by the use of dibenzo-18-crown-6 as an ionophore for the facilitated transfer voltammetry of protonated dopamine across the ITIES. Under these conditions, ascorbate is not transferred and hence does not interfere in the ion transfer current for dopamine. By use of DPV and SWV, the lowest concentration detectable can be lowered from ca. 0.1mM (obtained with cyclic voltammetry) to 2 M. Evaluation of the effect of some other physiologically important species (acetylcholine, sodium, potassium and ammonium ions) on the dopamine transfer voltammetry has been studied, indicating the need for improved ionophore designs in order to achieve practically useful selectivity.
