- Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the nutritional quality of mid-afternoon snacks for schooled children aged 3 to 12 years in three areas of Catalonia (Spain). Methods: A descriptive observational study collected information on habits and the mid-afternoon snack of 782 schooled children aged 3 to 12 years in three cities, Barcelona, Girona, and Lleida, located in Catalonia (Spain). The children’s families voluntarily agreed to complete an online questionnaire that collected information about demographic data and snacking habits in the afternoon, as well as a record of mid-afternoon snack intake over three school days. Results: A total of 2163 mid-afternoon snacks were analyzed from a sample of 764 families with 3 to 12 year-old children. Sandwiches emerged as the most prevalent choice, accounting for 41.89%, followed by pastries at 23.86%, fruit at 14.38%, and a combination of fruit and pastries at 6.29%. Of the mid-afternoon snacks recorded, 22.19% were healthy, 20.90% were quite healthy, 12.85% were quite unhealthy, and 44.06% were unhealthy. Conclusions: The nutritional quality of mid-afternoon snacks for a large majority of schooled children should be improved. It is essential to develop food education programs to improve the quality of this intake from early childhood and to consider it as an opportunity to adjust the daily dietary requirements of Spanish children.

Professional fishing in Catalonia has traditionally been a major economic activity, but analysis show a decreasing trend in catches and revenues over the last decade. During this period, landings at the fishing markets reached a maximum value of 37 044 tons (t) in 2006, while a minimum of 16 157 t was registered in 2023. Revenues also decreased from their maximum value of 130 million € (M€) in 2007 to a minimum of 86.18 M€ in 2023, despite a rebound in 2021 and 2022, when revenues reached to 91.05 M€ and 94.39 M€ respectively. The average value of landings in € per kilo has been increasing since 2002, from a minimum value of 3.42 €/kg in 2002 to a maximum of 5.33 €/kg in 2023. Regarding the Catalan fishing fleet, it decreased from 1 087 fishing vessels in 2002 to 535 in 2023. During 2023, the Catalan fishing fleet catches and revenues decreased by 20.38% and 7.18% respectively, compared to the previous year, while the average landings in € per kilo increased by 16.38% (0.75 €/kg). Meanwhile, freshwater fishing and shellfishing on foot landed 288.58 t and generated revenues of 2.01 M€, 1.55% and 0.33% more than in 2021 respectively. Over 98% of these 2023 landings and revenues correspond to the Catalan marine fishing fleet, while the remaining 2% correspond to freshwater fishing and shellfishing on foot. In Catalonia, there are 6 management plans designed and implemented by co-management committees. In 2023, 33% of the commercial fishing fleet and 64% of the small-scale fishing fleet have been managed by these management plans. The analysis of the indicators of the main fishing sectors of the Catalan fishing fleet in 2023 shows that small scale fishing is the activity with the greatest fishing fleet, followed by bottom trawling. Purse seine produces the greatest volume of landings, while bottom trawling produces the greatest revenues, due to the high price of some of the target species on this sector (i.e. blue and red shrimp and Norway lobster). The following specie

- Abstract
Subsets of multiple myeloma (MM) and monoclonal gammopathies of undetermined significance (MGUS) present with a monoclonal immunoglobulin specific for hepatitis C virus (HCV), thus are presumably HCV-driven, and antiviral treatment can lead to the disappearance of antigen stimulation and improved control of clonal plasma cells. Here we studied the role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the pathogenesis of MGUS and MM in 45 HBV-infected patients with monoclonal gammopathy. We analysed the specificity of recognition of the monoclonal immunoglobulin of these patients, and validated the efficacy of antiviral treatment (AVT). For 18/45 (40%) HBV-infected patients, the target of the monoclonal immunoglobulin was identified: the most frequent target was HBV (n=11), followed by other infectious pathogens (n=6), and glucosylsphingosine (n=1). Two patients whose monoclonal immunoglobulin targeted HBV (HBx and HBcAg), implying that their gammopathy was HBV-driven, received AVT and the gammopathy did not progress. AVT efficacy was then investigated in a large cohort of HBV-infected MM patients (n=1367), who received anti-HBV treatments, or not, and compared to a cohort of HCV-infected MM patients (n=1220). AVT significantly improved patient probability of overall survival (p=0.016 for the HBV-positive cohort, p=0.005 for the HCV-positive cohort). Altogether, MGUS and MM disease can be HBV- or HCV-driven in infected patients, and the study demonstrates the importance of antiviral treatment in such patients., Ligue Nationale contre le Cancer, Spanish Society of Hematology, Depto. de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular, Fac. de Farmacia, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Purpose: The gut microbiota plays important roles in health and disease. We questioned whether the gut microbiota and related metabolites are altered in monoclonal gammopathies and evaluated their potential role in multiple myeloma and its response to treatment. Experimental Design: We used 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize and compare the gut microbiota of patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (n ¼ 11), smoldering multiple myeloma (n ¼ 9), newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (n ¼ 11), relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (n ¼ 6), or with complete remission (n ¼ 9). Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) were quantified in serum and tested in cell lines. Relevant metabolites were validated in a second cohort of 62 patients. Results: Significant differences in alpha- and beta diversity were present across the groups and both were lower in patients with relapse/refractory disease and higher in patients with complete remission after treatment. Differences were found in the abundance of several microbiota taxa across disease progression and in response to treatment. Bacteria involved in SCFA production, including Prevotella, Blautia, Weissella, and agathobacter, were more represented in the premalignant or complete remission samples, and patients with higher levels of Agathobacter showed better overall survival. Serum levels of butyrate and propionate decreased across disease progression and butyrate was positively associated with a better response. Both metabolites had antiproliferative effects in multiple myeloma cell lines. Conclusions: We demonstrate that SCFAs metabolites and the gut microbiota associated with their production might have beneficial effects in disease evolution and response to treatment, underscoring its therapeutic potential and value as a predictor., MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities of Spain, Instituto de Investigación Hospital 12 de Octubre, CIBERONC, AECC, Sociedad Espanola de Hematología y Hemoterapia, Depto. de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular, Fac. de Farmacia, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Background: Down syndrome (DS) is considered the most frequent cause of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and the typical pathophysiological signs are present in almost all individuals with DS by the age of 40. Despite of this evidence, the investigation on the pre-dementia stages in DS is scarce. In the present study we analyzed the complexity of brain oscillatory patterns and neuropsychological performance for the characterization of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in DS. Materials and methods: Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZC) values from restingstatemagnetoencephalography recordings and the neuropsychological performance in 28 patients with DS [control DS group (CN-DS) (n = 14), MCI group (MCI-DS) (n = 14)] and 14 individuals with typical neurodevelopment (CN-no-DS) were analyzed. Results: Lempel-Ziv complexity was lowest in the frontal region within the MCI-DS group, while the CN-DS group showed reduced values in parietal areas when compared with the CN-no-DS group. Also, the CN-no-DS group exhibited the expected pattern of significant increase of LZC as a function of age, while MCI-DS cases showed a decrease. The combination of reduced LZC values and a divergent trajectory of complexity evolution with age, allowed the discrimination of CN-DS vs. MCI-DS patients with a 92.9% of sensitivity and 85.7% of specificity. Finally, a pattern of mnestic and praxic impairment was significantly associated in MCI-DS cases with the significant reduction of LZC values in frontal and parietal regions (p = 0.01). Conclusion: Brain signal complexity measured with LZC is reduced in DS and its development with age is also disrupted. The combination of both features might assist in the detection of MCI within this population., Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (Instituto de Salud Carlos III), Jérôme Lejeune Foundation, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Depto. de Medicina Legal, Psiquiatría y Patología, Fac. de Medicina, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Despite the approval of several drugs for AML, cytarabine is still widely used as a therapeutic approach. However, 85% of patients show resistance and only 10% overcome the disease. Using RNA-seq and phosphoproteomics, we show that RNA splicing and serine-arginine-rich (SR) proteins phosphorylation were altered during cytarabine resistance. Moreover, phosphorylation of SR proteins at diagnosis were significantly lower in responder than non-responder patients, pointing to their utility to predict response. These changes correlated with altered transcriptomic profiles of SR protein target genes. Notably, splicing inhibitors were therapeutically effective in treating sensitive and resistant AML cells as monotherapy or combination with other approved drugs. H3B-8800 and venetoclax combination showed the best efficacy in vitro, demonstrating synergistic effects in patient samples and no toxicity in healthy hematopoietic progenitors. Our results establish that RNA splicing inhibition, alone or combined with venetoclax, could be useful for the treatment of newly diagnosed or relapsed/refractory AML., Depto. de Bioquímica y Biología Molecular, Fac. de Farmacia, TRUE, pub

- Abstract
Wax esters (WE) are industrially important high-value molecules used in several applications including cosmetics, printing inks, lubricants, and the food industry. Currently, the synthesis of WE through chemical methods presents many disadvantages, mainly high production costs1. Therefore, more sustainable biotechnological solutions are being sought, and microbial synthesis is an attractive alternative. New approaches that bridge systems biology and synthetic biology can be used as powerful tools to redirect cell resources towards the production of molecules of interest2. For this endeavor, Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 is of special interest, since this organism is a natural producer of WE and it is an ideal cellular platform for synthetic biology due to its genetic tractability. As the genes involved in the WE synthesis and their precursors are not fully characterized3, exploring the native biosynthesis pathways could provide a promising basis for the increased production of WE. Here, we focused on the in silico evaluation of the production of WE in A. baylyi ADP1 by applying constraint-based, genome scale metabolic models to predict theoretical yields of bioconversion of different substrates into WE. We simulate the deletion of the aceA and fadE genes, encoding for isocitrate lyase and acyl-CoA dehydrogenase, respectively, to explore the metabolic capabilities of strains already generated in the laboratory. In addition, we use different carbon sources related to the oxidative depolymerization of plastics, such as succinate, adipic acid, benzoic acid, acetic acid, protocatechuic acid, and terephthalic acid. The validation of these powerful predictive tools will allow the design of new optimized strains for the improved production of WE from plastic waste in A. baylyi.

- Abstract
Innovative solutions are urgently needed to address the global plastics pollution crisis. Here, we propose a nonconventional bacterial host, namely Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1, as a synthetic biology workhorse for the upcycling of conventional plastic waste and the production of bio-based plastics that are chemically recyclable by design. In previous work, the remarkably efficient natural transformation, homologous recombination, and catabolic versatility of A. baylyi has enabled the implementation of a heterologous catabolic pathway and the development of an in vivo fluorescent biosensor for terephthalic acid—a xenobiotic used for the production of the ubiquitous polyethylene terephthalate (PET)1. The lessons learned from this experience open the door to further engineering for the biological conversion and valorization of other plastic-related substrates, either from diverse polymer types or from additives such as plasticizers. In particular, here we target the production of value-added wax esters, which are naturally produced by A. baylyi. These compounds find numerous applications in industry, and they can be used as precursors for polyethylene-like materials with a closed-loop life cycle2. We further posit that the innate features of A. baylyi make it an ideal platform for the implementation of Design-Build-Test-Learn cycles that can accelerate the development of microbial chassis for the upcycling of plastic waste, aiding in the transition towards a Circular Economy of plastics.

- Abstract
After decades of a linear consumption model of plastics, more than 6000 million tons of plastic residues have accumulated in landfills and the environment, and this figure is expected to double by 2050. New plastic waste management strategies and materials with a closed-loop life cycle are urgently needed to reduce this trend. In this scenario, harnessing bacteria to convert non-recyclable plastic wastes into more sustainable, bio-derived polymers or their precursors is of paramount interest. Here, we propose using the wax ester-accumulating bacterium Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1 to produce precursors for polyethylene-like materials that are chemically recyclable by design. The versatile metabolism and amenability for genetic manipulation of A. baylyi make it an ideal host to engineer the conversion of plastic-derived substrates into value added products, such as wax esters and long-chain dicarboxylic acids. We will present our goals and latest results from this emerging research line, where we will apply systems and synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and bioprocess design to develop new biomaterials for the circular economy of plastics.

- Abstract
It has been seen that in all the communities where the degree in optics and optometry is studied and in which two official languages are spoken, the option of teaching these studies in both modalities is given. However, in the case of the Basque Country, since it has no faculty of optics and optometry, it lacks the knowledge of optometric terms in the local language. The aim of this work is to find out the language deficiencies in the optical field in the Basque Country.

- Abstract
From traditional dictionaries to virtual libraries in heritage conservation, the process of Knowledge Management develops and students are part of the research and production of knowledge through conversations with librarians, archivists and digitisation specialists. Conversations and interactions in the real or face-to-face spectrum are reflected in the virtual framework thanks to technology, whose narratives go from being linear to interconnected thanks to metadata and retrieved through the keywords of dictionaries and thesauri in cultural heritage conservation. Previous teaching innovation experiences such as the Dictionary of "Basic Terminology of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage 2. Spanish - English - French - Italian - German" directed by Ana Calvo (PID 2015 no. 293) serve as a support point to understand the importance of terms and keywords in digital searches and are related to the classification thesauri of libraries. It is intended to continue with its development and study by the students by extending the terms to the praxis of risk management, integrated into the digital knowledge management cycle and making them accessible through the bibliography specialising in heritage conservation, gradually being implemented as a formula for conversation with the Library.

- Abstract
MM represents 1.8% of cancers and the third most frequent hematological tumor, especially diagnosed in the adult population with an age range between approximately 65 and 74 years. Despite the great advances occurred in the last decade in the understanding of MM, it remains an incurable disease.Despite the origin of this hematological neoplasm is still unknown, some studies suggest that chronic antigenic stimulation by microorganisms, such as the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), could be key factors on this process. In the interaction with the plasma cell as part of the antigenic recognition process, the chronic antigen could be one of the drivers that trigger the pathology. In this context, the microorganisms of the gut microbiota also play an important role in the development of diseases, including cancers such as MM. Previous studies have focused on understanding the modulatory function of the microbiota in MM, trying to elucidate how the composition and interaction of these microorganisms affect the development of this pathology. Likewise, some microbiota metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) or urolithin A (AU), have been reported to have a beneficial effect on other diseases...

- Abstract
Few species of Japygidae (Diplura) have been discovered in cave ecosystems despite their importance as large predators. A small collection of rare specimens of this hexapod group has allowed to explore the taxonomy of japygids from caves in New Zealand, Morocco and South Africa, and to describe one new genus: Imazighenjapyx Sendra & Sánchez-García gen. nov., as well as four new species: Austrjapyx wynbergensis Sendra & Sánchez-García sp. nov., Imazighenjapyx marocanus Sendra & Sánchez-García gen. et sp. nov., Opisthjapyx naledi Sendra & Sánchez-García sp. nov. and Teljapyx aotearoa Sendra & Sánchez-García sp. nov. For each of the new taxa we give a comprehensive description of their habitats. These new findings resulted in a revision of the distribution and allowed to re-evaluate the morphological traits of the fifteen cave-adapted japygids species already known worldwide. The functional morphology of the remarkable abdominal pincers of Japygidae and their adaptation to predation are discussed, as well as their potential role in mating behaviour.

- Abstract
We report the discovery of a triply imaged active galactic nucleus (AGN), lensed by the galaxy cluster MACS J0035.4-2015 ($z_{\mathrm{d}}=0.352$). The object is detected in Hubble Space Telescope imaging taken for the RELICS program. It appears to have a quasi-stellar nucleus consistent with a point-source, with a de-magnified radius of $r_e\lesssim100$ pc. The object is spectroscopically confirmed to be an AGN at $z_{\mathrm{spec}}=2.063\pm0.005$ showing broad rest-frame UV emission lines, and is detected in both X-ray observations with Chandra and in ALCS ALMA band 6 (1.2 mm) imaging. It has a relatively faint rest-frame UV luminosity for a quasar-like object, $M_{\mathrm{UV},1450}=-19.7\pm0.2$. The object adds to just a few quasars or other X-ray sources known to be multiply lensed by a galaxy cluster. Some diffuse emission from the host galaxy is faintly seen around the nucleus and there is a faint object nearby sharing the same multiple-imaging symmetry and geometric redshift, possibly an interacting galaxy or a star-forming knot in the host. We present an accompanying lens model, calculate the magnifications and time delays, and infer physical properties for the source. We find the rest-frame UV continuum and emission lines to be dominated by the AGN, and the optical emission to be dominated by the host galaxy of modest stellar mass $M_{\star}\simeq10^{9.2} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. We also observe some variation in the AGN emission with time, which may suggest that the AGN used to be more active. This object adds a low-redshift counterpart to several relatively faint AGN recently uncovered at high redshifts with HST and JWST., Comment: Published in MNRAS. - Abstract
The seafloor of the Mediterranean Sea accumulates marine litter (ML), an area where bottom trawlers operate and can accidentally catch the litter from the seafloor. This study aims to describe and quantify the ML caught by bottom trawlers along the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean Sea) and estimate the potential of the bottom trawl fleet to extract ML from the area as a Fishing for Litter (FFL) initiative to tackle the ML issue. Marine litter was collected from commercial trawlers and was classified as metal, plastic, rubber, textile, wood, and other waste and weighed (kg) from 305 hauls performed during three years (2019–2021) from 9 different ports at 3 different depths. ML was present in 97 % of the hauls, with plastic being the most abundant material. The composition varied according to zone, port and depth, with the highest densities found in highly urbanized areas (13.75 ± 3.25 kg km−2), which mainly contained plastics (74.3 %). The port of Barcelona had the highest presence of plastics (23.62 ± 6.49 kg km−2), mainly wet wipes. Regarding depth, the continental shelf had the highest density of ML, with 12.24 ± 2.40 kg km−2. The potential ML removal (t year−1) was calculated using fishing effort (hours). It is estimated that the bottom trawlers may potentially remove 237 ± 36 t year−1 of ML in the Catalan coast. FFL initiatives should be part of a multidisciplinary approach to tackle marine litter, which must include prevention, monitoring, and cleaning actions

- Abstract
Amber is fossilized resin that preserves biological remains in exceptional detail, study of which has revolutionized understanding of past terrestrial organisms and habitats from the Early Cretaceous to the present day. Cretaceous amber outcrops are more abundant in the Northern Hemisphere and during an interval of about 54 million years, from the Barremian to the Campanian. The extensive resin production that generated this remarkable amber record may be attributed to the biology of coniferous resin producers, the growth of resiniferous forests in proximity to transitional sedimentary environments, and the dynamics of climate during the Cretaceous. Here we discuss the set of interrelated abiotic and biotic factors potentially involved in resin production during that time. We name this period of mass resin production by conifers during the late Mesozoic, fundamental as an archive of terrestrial life, the `Cretaceous Resinous Interval (CREI).

- Abstract
One of the main drivers of marine ecosystem change is fishing activity, bottom trawling being the most intensive fishing practice affecting benthic ecosystems worldwide. In the western Mediterranean Sea, Norway lobster stocks present signs of overexploitation due to trawling pressure, as their biomass and abundance have decreased abruptly during the last few years. No-take fishery reserves, a type of marine protected area where fishing is prohibited, could be efficient management measures to recover Norway lobster overexploited populations and coexisting demersal megafauna. Adopting a BACI (before–after control–impact) approach, we performed experimental fishing surveys before and after 4 years of the implementation of a deep-sea no-take reserve in the northwestern Mediterranean. After 4 years of closure, the Norway lobster population increased in abundance, biomass, body size, and trophic level in the no-take reserve. Our approach also revealed an increase in Norway lobster biomass beyond its boundaries, suggesting a spillover effect. Other demersal fish species also increased in biomass and abundance in the no-take reserve. Based on the results of this study, we suggest that no-take reserves might be an effective measure for recovering the Norway lobster stock and some species present in the same habitat

[EN] This note records the fourth specimen of the Crucifix Crab, Charybdis (Charybdis) feriata (Linné, 1758) to be registered in the western Mediterranean, this being the first specimen detected along the Valencian coast, specifically in front of Grau de Castelló de la Plana. The importance of this finding lies in the fact that this individual expands the known distribution range of the species in the Mediterranean, thus showing a slow geographic extension of the recorded specimens in a NE-SW direction following the main oceanographic current present in the area, the Mediterranean Northern Current. We also discuss the possible coexistence with other large crabs present in the area, such as the American Blue Crab, Callinectes sapidus, and the Blue Swimming Crab, Portunus segnis given their habitat, temperature, and salinity preferences, [CAT] En aquesta nota es deixa constància del quart exemplar de cranc de la creu, Charybdis (Charybdis) feriata (Linné, 1758) que es registra a la Mediterrània occidental, essent aquest el primer exemplar detectat a la costa valenciana.

Idioma: Castellano

- Abstract

- Abstract
The Mediterranean Sea has registered great abundances of benthic marine litter (ML). The seafloor is often where it accumulates, an area shared with the activity of bottom trawlers, which can accidentally catch the litter from the seafloor, in strategies named Fishing for Litter (FFL). Thus, this study describes, quantifies and maps the ML caught by bottom trawlers along the Catalan coast (NW Mediterranean Sea). The litter was obtained from 305 hauls performed during three years (2019-2021) from 9 different ports at 3 depth strata covering from 20 to 700 m. In the laboratory, the ML was weighted and classified in six different categories (metal, plastic, rubber, textile, wood, and other waste). ML was present in 97 % of the hauls, which composition varied according to zone, port and depth, with the highest densities found in highly urbanized areas (13.75 ± 3.25 kg km-2), which mainly contained plastics (74,3 %). The port of Barcelona had the highest presence of plastics (23.62 ± 6.49 kg km-2), mainly wet wipes. Regarding depth, the continental shelf had the highest density of ML, with 12.24 ± 2.40 kg km-2. The effect of different ML sources was tested in order to evaluate spatial distribution of ML in the Catalan seafloor. To conclude, the bottom trawl fleet of the Catalan coast has the potential to remove 237 ± 36 t of marine litter yearly. Therefore, FFL initiatives should be part of a multidisciplinary approach to tackle marine litter, which must include prevention, monitoring, and cleaning actions

- Abstract
This report presents the stock assessment results obtained by ICATMAR using its own data set and a data-resource limited (length-based) model (i.e. LBSPR) in the N GSA06. The results estimate that the Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) for hake (HKE), red mullet (MUT) and blue and red shrimp (ARA) is under SPRlim. On the contrary, for deep-water rose shrimp (DPS), Norway lobster (NEP), European sardine (PIL) and anchovy (ANE), the estimated SPR is above SPRlim (Figure 1). In detail, for each species, the results are: Hake, red mullet and blue and red shrimp are under SPRlim for the four years evaluated and with the three scenarios tested. For the blue and red shrimp there is a negative trend in the SPR estimates. The deep-water rose shrimp stock is between SPRpa and SPRlim for all years and the four scenarios, with no clear trend. Norway lobster and European sardine are between SPRpa and SPRlim, or above SPRpa in some years, depending on the scenario. The Norway lobster has a negative trend, as opposed to the European sardine, which has a positive trend. Anchovy is above SPRpa and, in 2022, it is near the SPRtgt for all scenarios tested. The advice drawn from these models should be considered as qualitative, and the stocks are considered overexploited in all cases

- Abstract
Legumes can contribute to emissions of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (NO) directly by some rhizobia species that are able to denitrify under free-living conditions and in symbiotic association with the plant. In this study, the capacity of Phaseolus vulgaris-Rhizobium etli symbiosis to emit NO in response to nitrate (NO) has been demonstrated for the first time. We found that bacteroidal assimilatory nitrate reductase (NarB) as well as nitrite reductase (NirK) and nitric oxide reductase (cNor) denitrifying enzymes contribute to nitric oxide (NO) and NO formation in nodules. We also show that R. etli NarK is involved in NO extrusion and links NO reduction by NarB in the cytoplasm with NirK and cNor denitrification activities in the periplasm. The knowledge generated in this work will be instrumental for exploring strategies and sustainable practices in agricultural soil management to increase legume crop yield and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

- Abstract
[EN] Following the three previous and successful editions of the Palaeontological Virtual Congress (PVC), organized in December 2018, May 2020, and in 2021 during the COVID19 pandemic, the 4th Palaeontological Virtual Congress continues to demonstrate the necesity for virtual meetings in palaeontology. PVC shows a steady growth compared to previous years, in both participants and contributions. In the 4th PVC, more than 723 scientists from 55 different countries gathered virtually to watch more than 340 contributions, an absolute record in terms of participation and number of contributions. Following the sharp increase in the number of contributions, the 4th PVC hosts an even greater diversity of topics. Besides the traditional Sessions of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic and General Palaeontology, the 4th PVC also hosts 8 Keynote presentations, 13 Thematic Sessions, and 3 Virtual Field Trips. The mission of this Palaeontological Virtual Congress was communited by 7 Ambassadors and Ambassadresses who helped attracting interest and spread our news. Thanks to them, we have been able to enjoy thre greatest national diversity reaching nearly half of the countries on Earth! We continued to add virtual activities, including a Photography and Palaeoart contest. You can find the wonderful prized photographs and artwork herein. Also, selected papers coming from this year’s communication will feature on a Special Volume of the high-quality peer-reviewed journal Geobios, that publishes bimonthly in English original peerreviewed articles of international interest in any area of palaeontology, palaeobiology, palaeoecology, palaeobiogeography, biostratigraphy, stratigraphy and biogeochemistry. We would like to thank all our colleagues for organising and coordinating the different workshops. We also want to thank all the authors for submitting their contributions and the numerous reviewers that have made this volume and congress possible. We would also like to give special thanks
