Marine litter is a global and transboundary pollution problem. Recent attention has focused on the impact of this issue on areas beyond national jurisdiction. In many cases, marine litter is traced to a coastal State where debris have been released into the sea. Effective and legally-binding commitments at the global level to tackle landbased sources of marine pollution are rare, in large part because of the sensitive nature of territorial sovereignty. When it comes to addressing the marine plastics crisis, sovereignty is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the international legal regime traditionally addressing marine litter, the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, does not specifically respond to, and is not able to adequately address, the issue of plastics as a land-based source of marine pollution. While it contributes to social equity by recognizing the special position of developing States in terms of capacity and need for economic development, this deference to domestic decisions is not conducive to the adoption of binding and global standards. Since a large majority of plastics in the oceans originate from land, this weakness is a major concern. On the other hand, sovereignty might contribute to a solution within the regime regulating trade in waste products: unilateral actions taken in application of sovereign powers and aimed at reducing trade in plastic waste led to major multilateral actions with the potential to reduce the issue of marine plastic pollution. In recent times, the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Waste and their Disposal has indeed become an important forum to respond to the plastic waste issue, with the potential to contribute to a solution to the marine dimension of this crisis. This regime is not perfect, especially in that its complexity and reliance on enforcement at the customs level leave ample opportunities for criminal activities to flourish. Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Around 25% of patients who have had a stroke suffer from severe upper-limb impairment and lack effective rehabilitation strategies. The AVANCER proof-of-concept clinical trial (NCT04448483) tackles this issue through an intensive and personalized-dosage cumulative intervention that combines multiple non-invasive neurotechnologies. METHODS: The therapy consists of two sequential interventions, lasting until the patient shows no further motor improvement, for a minimum of 11 sessions each. The first phase involves a brain-computer interface governing an exoskeleton and multi-channel functional electrical stimulation enabling full upper-limb movements. The second phase adds anodal transcranial direct current stimulation of the motor cortex of the lesioned hemisphere. Clinical, electrophysiological, and neuroimaging examinations are performed before, between, and after the two interventions (T0, T1, and T2). This case report presents the results from the first patient of the study. FINDINGS: The primary outcome (i.e., 4-point improvement in the Fugl-Meyer assessment of the upper extremity) was met in the first patient, with an increase from 6 to 11 points between T0 and T2. This improvement was paralleled by changes in motor-network structure and function. Resting-state and transcranial magnetic stimulation-evoked electroencephalography revealed brain functional changes, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures detected structural and task-related functional changes. CONCLUSIONS: These first results are promising, pointing to feasibility, safety, and potential efficacy of this personalized approach acting synergistically on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Integrating multi-modal data may provide valuable insights into underlying mechanisms driving the improvements and providing predictive information regarding treatment response and outcomes. This paper takes into account all factors that affected the preservation of tombs and their inventories in the burial grounds of ancient Crustumerium, a Latin settlement 13 km north of Rome, inhabited between the 9th and 5th c. BC. Its aim is to highlight the combined effect of two main processes; a) the severe erosion of the topsoil and the underlying soft volcanic bedrock caused by centuries of ploughing that has profoundly affected the preservation of tomb architecture, i.e. landscape processes; b) post-depositional processes affecting organic materials (wood, textiles, human bone) and inorganic materials (pottery, metal) in the tombs as a result of flooding, collapse and the acidity of the soil, i.e. taphonomy.

Globally, fisheries continue to face a range of pressures that can be addressed by more effective national, regional, and international fisheries governance. Increasing the transparency of decision-making and implementation of adopted measures is widely recognised as forming part of the solution to this challenge. While transparency has emerged as a good governance principle in general, it is embedded in specific international law obligations when it comes to fisheries. For fisheries management, it is crucial that relevant data be available to inform decisions and that the process be inclusive. Ensuring inclusive decision-making relies not only on the participation of outsiders but also on the equality of States in the negotiations leading to a decision. Furthermore, transparency serves important functions in relation to compliance and accountability: putting information on vessels, States, international organisations or even private actors in the public domain enables scrutiny, might encourage compliance, and builds trust in the regime. Several lessons for fisheries management arise from the contributions to this special issue of Marine Policy. First, the positive impact of transparency ought not to be accepted without a thorough examination of its implementation in practice. Second, transparency in a substantive sense does not mean simply the availability of data; it must also focus on information of high quality and usability for specific stakeholders. Finally, keeping in mind the ultimate purpose of sustainability, transparency is but one stone in the larger process of building legitimate and effective regimes for managing shared resources.

We prove that the generalized symplectic capacities recognize objects in symplectic categories whose objects are of the form $(M,\omega)$, such that $M$ is a compact and 1-connected manifold, $\omega$ is an exact symplectic form on $M$, and there exists a boundary component of $M$ with negative helicity. The set of generalized symplectic capacities is thus a complete invariant for such categories. This answers a question by Cieliebak, Hofer, Latschev, and Schlenk. It appears to be the first result concerning this question, except for recognition results for manifolds of dimension 2, ellipsoids, and polydiscs in $\mathbb{R}^4$. Strikingly, our result holds more generally for differential form categories. Recognition of objects is therefore not a symplectic phenomenon. We also prove a version of the result for normalized capacities.

Introduction Stroke causes different levels of impairment and the degree of recovery varies greatly between patients. The majority of recovery studies are biased towards patients with mild-to-moderate impairments, challenging a unified recovery process framework. Our aim was to develop a statistical framework to analyse recovery patterns in patients with severe and non-severe initial impairment and concurrently investigate whether they recovered differently. Methods We designed a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate 3-6 months upper limb Fugl-Meyer (FM) scores after stroke. When focusing on the explanation of recovery patterns, we addressed confounds affecting previous recovery studies and considered patients with FM-initial scores <45 only. We systematically explored different FM-breakpoints between severe/non-severe patients (FM-initial=5-30). In model comparisons, we evaluated whether impairment-level-specific recovery patterns indeed existed. Finally, we estimated the out-of-sample prediction performance for patients across the entire initial impairment range. Results Recovery data was assembled from eight patient cohorts (n=489). Data were best modelled by incorporating two subgroups (breakpoint: FM-initial=10). Both subgroups recovered a comparable constant amount, but with different proportional components: severely affected patients recovered more the smaller their impairment, while non-severely affected patients recovered more the larger their initial impairment. Prediction of 3-6 months outcomes could be done with an R-2=63.5% (95% CI=51.4% to 75.5%). Conclusions Our work highlights the benefit of simultaneously modelling recovery of severely-to-non-severely impaired patients and demonstrates both shared and distinct recovery patterns. Our findings provide evidence that the severe/non-severe subdivision in recovery modelling is not an artefact of previous confounds. BACKGROUND Whereas the dietary intake of industrial trans fatty acids (iTFA) has been specifically associated with inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes, understanding the impact of dietary fats on human health remains challenging owing to their complex composition and individual effects of their lipid components on metabolism. The aim of this study is to profile the composition of blood, measured by the fatty acid (FAs) profile and untargeted metabolome of serum and the transcriptome of blood cells, in order to identify molecular signatures that discriminate dietary fat intakes. METHODS In a parallel study, the molecular effects of consuming dairy fat containing ruminant TFA (rTFA) or margarine containing iTFA were investigated. Healthy volunteers (n = 42; 45-69 y) were randomly assigned to diets containing margarine without TFA as major source of fat (wTFA control group with 0.4 g TFA per 100 g margarine), margarine with iTFA (iTFA group with 4.1 g TFA per 100 g margarine), or butter with rTFA (rTFA group with 6.3 g TFA per 100 g butter) for 4 weeks. The amounts of test products were individually selected so that fat intake contributed to 30-33% of energy requirements and TFA in the rTFA and iTFA groups contributed to up to 2% of energy intake. Changes in fasting blood values of lipid profiles (GC with flame-ionization detection), metabolome profiles (LC-MS, GC-MS), and gene expression (microarray) were measured. RESULTS Eighteen FAs, as well as 242 additional features measured by LC-MS (185) and GC-MS (54) showed significantly different responses to the diets (P$_{FDR-adjusted}$ < 0.05), mainly distinguishing butter from the margarine diets while gene expression was not differentially affected. Background: Physical exercise has significant benefits for mental and physical health. The Federal Office of Public Health in Switzerland defined exercise as a medium-term treatment goal in the manual of heroin-assisted treatment. Methods: Sixty-four opioid agonist treatment providers and specialized psychosocial treatment centers across the German-speaking part of Switzerland were asked to fill in a brief, self-developed questionnaire to find out whether exercise programs are offered and what they consist of. The questionnaire additionally addressed the caregivers’ assessment of their respec- tive treatment facilities importance to their patients, their attitude towards exercising programs, and the frequency of mentioning exercise in patient encounters. In addition, we asked what kind of sports programs caregivers would like to see introduced in their treatment services. Results: Fifty-one questionnaires were returned. According to the caregivers, 76% of patients considered their treatment facility to be the first point of contact in case of an emergency. Caregivers who deemed the provision of exercise programs more important also mentioned exercise more often in their patient encounters and motivated patients more often. While the importance of exercise programs was rated high by 45% of caregivers, only seven respondents reported that regular exercise has been implemented as part of their treatment services. The most com- mon suggestion of a sports program was (Nordic) walking, followed by yoga and endurance sports. Conclusions: There is a mismatch between what is recommended and known regarding cost effectiveness of physical exercise in general, any form of walking in opioid addiction treatment, and what is actually offered and put into practice. Since this intervention allows the inclusion of most patients regardless of their fitness level or health condition, the reasons for this mismatch remain elusive and should be further explored.

European farms for broiler breeders often have raised slatted areas in front of the nests, but in other regions of the world no raised slatted areas are provided. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a raised slatted area on leg health, mating behaviour and floor laying behaviour. Ten groups of 33 broiler breeder hens and three males were housed in two pen types: with or without a raised slatted area in front of the nests. Each pen had one plastic and one wooden nest. Between 25 and 31 weeks of age, ten marked hens per pen were weighed and assessed weekly on foot pad dermatitis, hock burn and wounds. At the end of week 31, animals were euthanized and bone strength of the tibia and humerus of these individuals was assessed. At 24, 27 and 30 weeks of age, mating behaviour was observed for an hour per pen, noting both numbers of successful and unsuccessful copulations. The number of eggs laid in the nests and on the floor was recorded daily between 20 and 31 weeks of age. Foot pad dermatitis scores were affected by age, but not by pen type. Generally, there were only minor issues with foot pad dermatitis (scores < 11 on a 0–100 scale), probably due to the young age of the hens. Body weight was not affected by pen type, while the prevalence of hock burns was too low to analyse and no difference in bone strength was found for the tibia and the humerus. Overall, mating behaviour was less frequent in pens with raised slats than in pens without raised slats (29 ± 2 vs 35 ± 3 times/h) and more frequent at 27 weeks of age than at 24 and 30 weeks of age (38 ± 1 vs 31 ± 4 and 27 ± 2 times/h). The pens with raised slats had a lower percentage of floor eggs than pens without raised slats (11.2 ± 0.4 vs 19.3 ± 0.5%). The wooden nest was preferred over the plastic nest as on average 63% of the eggs were laid in the wooden nest. Diese Bachelorarbeit entstand im Rahmen der Ausbildung zur Primarlehrperson im Studiengang Kindergarten und Primarstufe an der Pädagogischen Hochschule St. Gallen. Als finales Endprodukt wurden drei verschiedene Konzepte ausgearbeitet, welche gezielt die Integration von Juniorinnen und Junioren in den Fussballclub Wängi verbessern. Dies soll langfristig die Mitglieder stärker an den Verein binden und die Bereitschaft zu einer ehrenamtlichen Tätigkeit im Verein fördern. Der literarische erste Teil liefert die Grundlagen, aus welchen die auf den Verein angepassten Massnahmen in Form von Konzepten ausgearbeitet wurden. Im Theorieteil werden deshalb umfassende Aspekte bezüglich Sportvereine in der Schweiz mit dessen Entwicklungen und Veränderungen aufgezeigt. Zusätzlich werden in einem eigenen Kapitel integrationsspezifische Merkmale von Sportvereinen dargelegt. Anhand dieser Aspekte, sowie mit Hilfe einer Vereinsbefragung im zweiten Teil der Arbeit, können Herausforderungen und Probleme der heutigen Sportvereine analysiert und auf spezifische Vereine, wie der FC Wängi, abgeleitet werden.

Diese Bachelorarbeit entstand im Rahmen der Ausbildung zur Primarlehrperson im Studiengang Kindergarten und Primarstufe an der Pädagogischen Hochschule St. Gallen. Als finales Endprodukt wurden drei verschiedene Konzepte ausgearbeitet, welche gezielt die Integration von Juniorinnen und Junioren in den Fussballclub Wängi verbessern. Dies soll langfristig die Mitglieder stärker an den Verein binden und die Bereitschaft zu einer ehrenamtlichen Tätigkeit im Verein fördern. Der literarische erste Teil liefert die Grundlagen, aus welchen die auf den Verein angepassten Massnahmen in Form von Konzepten ausgearbeitet wurden. Im Theorieteil werden deshalb umfassende Aspekte bezüglich Sportvereine in der Schweiz mit dessen Entwicklungen und Veränderungen aufgezeigt. Zusätzlich werden in einem eigenen Kapitel integrationsspezifische Merkmale von Sportvereinen dargelegt. Anhand dieser Aspekte, sowie mit Hilfe einer Vereinsbefragung im zweiten Teil der Arbeit, können Herausforderungen und Probleme der heutigen Sportvereine analysiert und auf spezifische Vereine, wie der FC Wängi, abgeleitet werden.

The neural correlate of anterograde amnesia in Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) is still debated. While the capacity to learn new information has been associated with integrity of the medial temporal lobe (MTL), previous studies indicated that the WKS is associated with diencephalic lesions, mainly in the mammillary bodies and anterior or dorsomedial thalamic nuclei. The present study tested the hypothesis that amnesia in WKS is associated with a disrupted neural circuit between diencephalic and hippocampal structures. High-density evoked potentials were recorded in four severely amnesic patients with chronic WKS, in five patients with chronic alcoholism without WKS, and in ten age matched controls. Participants performed a continuous recognition task of pictures previously shown to induce a left medial temporal lobe dependent positive potential between 250 and 350ms. In addition, the integrity of the fornix was assessed using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). WKS, but not alcoholic patients without WKS, showed absence of the early, left MTL dependent positive potential following immediate picture repetitions. DTI indicated disruption of the fornix, which connects diencephalic and hippocampal structures. The findings support an interpretation of anterograde amnesia in WKS as a consequence of a disconnection between diencephalic and MTL structures with deficient contribution of the MTL to rapid consolidation.

Recent findings indicate that synchronous neural activity at rest influences human performance in subsequent tasks. Synchronization can occur in form of phase coupling or amplitude correlation. It is unknown whether these coupling types have differing behavioral significance at rest. To address this, we performed resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) and source connectivity analysis in several populations of healthy subjects and patients with brain lesions. We systematically compared different types and frequencies of neural synchronization and investigated their association with behavioral performance in verbal and spatial attention tasks. Behavioral performance could be consistently predicted by two distinct resting-state coupling patterns: (1) amplitude envelope correlation of beta activity between homologous areas of both hemispheres, (2) lagged phase synchronization in EEG alpha activity between a brain area and the entire cortex. A disruption of these coupling patterns was also associated with neurological deficits in patients with stroke lesions. This suggests the existence of two distinct network systems responsible for resting-state integration. Lagged phase synchronization in the alpha band is associated with global interaction across networks while amplitude envelope correlation seems to be behaviorally relevant for interactions within networks and between hemispheres. These two coupling types may therefore provide complementary insights on brain physiology and pathology.

European farms for broiler breeders often have raised slatted areas in front of the nests, but in other regions of the world no raised slatted areas are provided. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a raised slatted area on leg health, mating behaviour and floor laying behaviour. Ten groups of 33 broiler breeder hens and three males were housed in two pen types: with or without a raised slatted area in front of the nests. Each pen had one plastic and one wooden nest. Between 25 and 31 weeks of age, ten marked hens per pen were weighed and assessed weekly on foot pad dermatitis, hock burn and wounds. At the end of week 31, animals were euthanized and bone strength of the tibia and humerus of these individuals was assessed. At 24, 27 and 30 weeks of age, mating behaviour was observed for an hour per pen, noting both numbers of successful and unsuccessful copulations. The number of eggs laid in the nests and on the floor was recorded daily between 20 and 31 weeks of age. Foot pad dermatitis scores were affected by age, but not by pen type. Generally, there were only minor issues with foot pad dermatitis (scores < 11 on a 0–100 scale), probably due to the young age of the hens. Body weight was not affected by pen type, while the prevalence of hock burns was too low to analyse and no difference in bone strength was found for the tibia and the humerus. Overall, mating behaviour was less frequent in pens with raised slats than in pens without raised slats (29 ± 2 vs 35 ± 3 times/h) and more frequent at 27 weeks of age than at 24 and 30 weeks of age (38 ± 1 vs 31 ± 4 and 27 ± 2 times/h). The pens with raised slats had a lower percentage of floor eggs than pens without raised slats (11.2 ± 0.4 vs 19.3 ± 0.5%). The wooden nest was preferred over the plastic nest as on average 63% of the eggs were laid in the wooden nest. Marine fisheries are in crisis. One of the causes of this problem is the inability or unwillingness of some states to abide by the international rules binding them. No comprehensive and compulsory mechanism exists to review states’ compliance with these obligations. This is in stark contrast with the shipping field, where International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states are regularly audited: the respect of their obligations as flag, coastal, and port states is assessed by external and professional auditors through a detailed procedure. Transposing at least some features of the IMO Audit Scheme, such as comprehensiveness, regularity, predictability, and centralization to the review of compliance with fisheries-related obligations would be highly desirable. While there may be challenges ahead – in particular when it comes to a mandatory scheme – there does not appear to be insurmountable issues to developing a comprehensive audit in the fisheries field.

Neurofeedback has begun to attract the attention and scrutiny of the scientific and medical mainstream. Here, neurofeedback researchers present a consensus-derived checklist that aims to improve the reporting and experimental design standards in the field.

Accurate predictions of motor impairment after stroke are of cardinal importance for the patient, clinician, and healthcare system. More than 10 years ago, the proportional recovery rule was introduced by promising that high-fidelity predictions of recovery following stroke were based only on the initially lost motor function, at least for a specific fraction of patients. However, emerging evidence suggests that this recovery rule is subject to various confounds and may apply less universally than previously assumed. Here, we systematically revisited stroke outcome predictions by applying strategies to avoid confounds and fitting hierarchical Bayesian models. We jointly analysed 385 post-stroke trajectories from six separate studies-one of the largest overall datasets of upper limb motor recovery. We addressed confounding ceiling effects by introducing a subset approach and ensured correct model estimation through synthetic data simulations. Subsequently, we used model comparisons to assess the underlying nature of recovery within our empirical recovery data. The first model comparison, relying on the conventional fraction of patients called 'fitters', pointed to a combination of proportional to lost function and constant recovery. 'Proportional to lost' here describes the original notion of proportionality, indicating greater recovery in case of a more severe initial impairment. This combination explained only 32% of the variance in recovery, which is in stark contrast to previous reports of 480%. When instead analysing the complete spectrum of subjects, 'fitters' and 'non-fitters', a combination of proportional to spared function and constant recovery was favoured, implying a more significant improvement in case of more preserved function. Explained variance was at 53%. Therefore, our quantitative findings suggest that motor recovery post-stroke may exhibit some characteristics of proportionality. However, the variance explained was substantially reduced compared

Automated driving technology along with electric propulsion are widely expected to fundamentally change our transport systems. They may not only allow a more productive use of travel time, but will likely trigger completely new business models in the mobility market. A key determinant of the future prospects of both existing and new mobility services will be their production costs. Hence, in this research the production costs of various transport modes both today and in an automated-electric future are analyzed. To account for different local contexts, the study is conducted for 17 cities across the globe. The results indicate that high-income countries will benefit the most from vehicle automation, while only smaller changes can be expected in lower-income countries. This is due to the different relative contribution of labor cost to the total cost of current taxi and bus operations. In a likely final state, transportation costs will be largely decoupled from a country’s income level, which will favor productivity in higher-income locations. While this research provides valuable first insights into potential future developments, the underlying assumptions will need to be updated as better information becomes available.

Different helminths and protozoa are transmitted to humans by oral uptake of environmentally resistant parasite stages after hand-to-mouth contact or by contaminated food and water. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a method for the simultaneous detection of parasite stages from fresh produce (lettuce) by a one-way isolation test kit followed by genetic identification (PCR, sequencing). Three sentinel zoonotic agents (eggs of Toxocara canis, Echinococcus multilocularis and oocysts of Toxoplasma gondii) were used to investigate the practicability and sensitivity of the method. The detection limits (100% positive results) in the recovery experiments were four Toxocara eggs, two E. multilocularis eggs and 18 T. gondii oocysts (in 4/5 replicates). In a field study, helminth DNA was detected in 14 of 157 lettuce samples including Hydatigera taeniaeformis (Syn. Taenia taeniaeformis) (four samples), T. polyacantha (three), T. martis (one), E. multilocularis (two) and Toxocara cati (four). Toxoplasma gondii was detected in six of 100 samples. In vivo testing in mice resulted in metacestode growth in all animals injected with 40–60 E. multilocularis eggs, while infection rates were 20–40% with 2–20 eggs. The developed diagnostic strategy is highly sensitive for the isolation and genetic characterisation of a broad range of parasite stages from lettuce, whereas the sensitivity of the viability tests needs further improvement.

This bouquet of essays contains four chapters. In the first chapter I present a brief summary of the literature of misspecified models. I discuss what various estimators are actually estimating when the model is misspecified. Further I discuss corrections to standard errors and when they are useful. I briefly cover hypothesis testing in the presence of misspecified models. I cover both frequentist and Bayesian approached. I show that a misspecified model can indeed be useful and discuss some misconceptions with misspecified models. The second chapter investigates the impact of misspecification in discrete choice models. I derive necessary and sufficient conditions for consistency of the maximum likelihood estimator from the misspecified model. A corollary is that the misspecified estimator is consistent for the correct sign, under certain conditions. It also follows that Huber-White standard errors can be used to obtain asymptotically conservative type one errors when testing the nullity of the coefficient. The third chapter builds a Bayesian model for multiple-output quantiles using a commonly accepted definition for the quantile. The prior can be elicited as the ex-ante knowledge of Tukey depth, the first prior of its kind. I apply the model to the Tennessee Project STAR experiment and find there is a joint increase in \emph{all quantile subpopulations} for reading and mathematics scores given a decrease in the number of students per teacher. This result is consistent with, and much stronger than, the results from previous studies. The four chapter I investigate if United States Supreme Court Justices recuse themselves strategically. I create a new structural model of recusals. Using this model I find causal evidence that justices recuse themselves strategically. I then calibrate and simulate the model to find the frequency of cases where at least one justice has a conflict of interest but does not recuse. Nongovernmental actors play several important roles in promoting compliance with international fisheries regulations. These roles consist on the one hand in monitoring, investigating and reporting occurrences of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and, on the other hand, in direct actions in coastal States’ exclusive economic zones and on the high seas. Some of these actions, in particular data gathering and sharing, fall squarely within the existing regime of the law of the sea. Other actions, such as some types of direct actions on the high seas, may be legally more questionable. In any case, the nongovernmental nature of the actors raises issues of efficiency, accountability, authority and allocation of responsibility. Notwithstanding expected resistance to reform from States and non‐State actors, there is a clear need to adapt and clarify the legal regime, at the risk otherwise of undermining the rule of law.
