A view of the exterior of Island Foods on Holmes Beach. Opened in 1974, Island Foods was the primary grocery store on Anna Maria Island for many years. In 1997, the grocery closed and was demolished. In 1999, a Publix was built at the location, which still operates there today.

Established in 1946 as the educational arm of the Southern Conference for Human Welfare, the Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF) became a separate organization in 1947. Originally based in New Orleans, Louisiana, its office later moved to Louisville, Kentucky, then to Atlanta, Georgia. SCEF was a leading proponent of integration and civil rights in the South, but internal disputes and financial problems led to its demise in the 1980s. The records of the Southern Conference Educational Fund span 1958-1985 (bulk 1970-1981). They include correspondence, notes and minutes from SCEF Board and Interim Committee meetings, financial and fundraising information, reports from SCEF chapters, information on various SCEF programs and activities, court documents, and correspondence and indexes related the SCEF newspaper., Protesters with sign, "Don't buy Sunsweet and Sunmaid"

"Bill" Shemorry was a native of Williston, N.D. who began work in the newspaper industry as a newsboy selling the Williston Herald and the Williams County Farmers Press. In 1953, he started to publish the Williston Plains Reporter, which he operated for 25 years before selling to the Williston Herald. Shemorry then began to concentrate on his own writing and photography. In addition to writing many books on the history of Williams County, he also collected photographs of early North Dakota photographers. Shemorry was an active member of the Williston Fire Department, was Civil Defense Chief of Williams County for three years in the 1950's, and was a combat photographer in World War II. Shemorry's photograph of the discovery of oil in North Dakota on April 4, 1951 at the Clarence Iverson No. 1 is one of the most famous oil photographs ever taken, and was published in many national publications.
