Demographic consequences of rapid environmental change and extreme climatic events (ECEs) can cascade across trophic levels with evolutionary implications that have rarely been explored. Here, we show how an ECE in high Arctic Svalbard triggered a trophic chain reaction, directly or indirectly affecting the demography of both overwintering and migratory vertebrates, ultimately inducing a shift in density-dependent phenotypic selection in migratory geese. A record-breaking rain-on-snow event and ice-locked pastures led to reindeer mass starvation and a population crash, followed by a period of low mortality and population recovery. This caused lagged, long-lasting reductions in reindeer carrion numbers and resultant low abundances of Arctic foxes, a scavenger on reindeer and predator of migratory birds. The associated decrease in Arctic fox predation of goose offspring allowed for a rapid increase in barnacle goose densities. As expected according to r- and K-selection theory, the goose body condition (affecting reproduction and post-fledging survival) maximising Malthusian fitness increased with this shift in population density. Thus, the winter ECE acting on reindeer and their scavenger, the Arctic fox, indirectly selected for higher body condition in migratory geese. This high Arctic study provides rare empirical evidence of links between ECEs, community dynamics and evolution, with implications for our understanding of indirect eco-evolutionary impacts of global change.

Extra aflevering bij de Weidevogelpodcastreeks. In natuurgebied de Hempolder overheersen de graslanden en is het uitzicht weids. Dit maakt het zeer geschikt als broedgebied voor weidevogels. Grutto, kievit, tureluur, scholekster en diverse eenden zijn hier volop te zien. In de winter kom je hier ganzen, smienten en goudplevieren tegen.

Als waterrijk land met intensieve landbouw en uitgestrekte moerasgebieden biedt Nederland in het winterhalfjaar ruimte voor arctische trekganzen en zijn er daarnaast standganzenpopulaties aanwezig die in Nederland broeden. De in landbouwgebieden foeragerende ganzen zorgen voor aanzienlijke economische schade aan landbouwgewassen, waarvoor door de overheid jaarlijks aanzienlijke vergoedingen worden uitgekeerd. Maatregelen en technieken die ervoor kunnen zorgen dat ganzen op schadegevoelige percelen geweerd worden, staan volop in de belangstelling. Doel van dit onderzoek is om de toegevoegde waarde van akoestische wering met behulp van het BirdAlert systeem te onderzoeken als onderdeel van het pakket aan niet-dodelijke preventieve maatregelen om gewasschade door ganzen te voorkomen en te beperken. BirdAlert®1 is een systeem van akoestische wering waarbij de aanwezigheid van vogels in een eerste stap via een microfoon wordt gedetecteerd en waarbij vervolgens soortspecifieke schrikgeluiden middels luidsprekers in het veld worden uitgezonden. Het doel hiervan is om de aanwezige vogels te verjagen. De focus van het onderzoek lag op graslandpercelen met foeragerende Grauwe ganzen en Brandganzen. In eerste instantie richt het onderzoek zich op de late winter (eind januari - februari) en het voorjaar (maart - begin mei) en daarmee op de schade tot aan de eerste snede. Dit is in Nederland de grootste schadepost op grasland. We hebben in mindere mate ook in de zomer gemeten. De aanwezigheid van ganzen op graslandpercelen is door middel van tweewekelijkse keuteltellingen gedocumenteerd. Er waren drie verschillende behandelingen: de BirdAlert behandeling, de ‘BirdAlert plus’ behandeling (versterking van de akoestische wering door een knalapparaat en visuele wering door een Scareman) en een controlegroep met conventionele wering volgens de gangbare praktijk in het gebied (bijv. verjaging met ondersteunend afschot). De metingen zijn binnen twee jaar uitgevoerd op in totaal 65 gras

Goose and swan populations have increased concurrently with environmental degradation of wetlands, such as eutrophication, vegetation losses, and decrease in biodiversity. An important question is whether geese and swans contribute to such changes or if they instead benefit from them. We collected data from 37 wetlands in southern Sweden April - July 2021 to study relationships between geese, swans and other waterbird guilds, macrophytes, invertebrates, as well as physical and water chemistry variables. Neither goose nor swan abundance was negatively correlated with other trophic levels (abundance, richness, or cover). On the contrary, goose or swan abundances were positively related to abundances of surface and benthic feeding waterbirds, cover of specific macrophytes, and to invertebrate richness and abundance. Moreover, invertebrates (number of taxa or abundance) were positively associated with abundance of several waterbird guilds and total phosphorous with surface feeders, whereas water colour was positively (surface feeders) or negatively (benthic feeders) related. We conclude that waterbirds are more abundant in productive wetlands and that geese and swans do not show clear deleterious effects on other trophic levels included in this study. However, patterns may be masked at the species level, which should be addressed in further studies, complemented with experimental studies of grazing impact.

Animal-based measures relevant for the assessment of these welfare consequences were identified and described. The relevant hazards leading to the welfare consequences in the different HSs were identified. Specific factors such as space allowance (including minimum enclosure area and height) per bird, group size, floor quality, characteristics of nesting facilities and enrichment provided (including access to water to fulfil biological needs) were assessed in relation to the welfare consequences and, recommendations on how to prevent the welfare consequences were provided in a quantitative or qualitative way.

In this study, we examined how evaluations of geese (attitude and acceptance capacity), but also experiences of birdwatching and birdwatcher identity, were associated with willingness to participate in local goose management. A survey among members of Sweden's largest birdwatching organization was conducted (n = 5010). The majority of respondents, 64%, displayed a divided evaluation of geese, most frequently in terms of an overall positive attitude towards geese but a low acceptance for current goose population levels (i.e. acceptance capacity). Birdwatchers' willingness to participate in goose management was generally low. Whereas they were more willing to take part in goose counts (i.e. monitoring) than to participate in local goose management groups, they were least willing to contribute to mitigating crop damage through scaring geese. Results further revealed that birdwatchers with a divided evaluation of geese and an entirely positive evaluation displayed the highest willingness to participate in goose management. However, a stronger distinct birdwatcher identity as a result of more birdwatching experiences was even more strongly associated with higher willingness to take part in goose management. The results highlight a need to intensify efforts to engage stakeholder groups with an interest in conservation issues in the participatory goose management system in Europe.

This study aims to examine the adaptive capacity of participatory goose management in Sweden. In dit onderzoek is in kaart gebracht wat agrariërs en jagers op dit moment doen rondom preventie, schadebestrijding en populatiebeheer van ganzen. Daarnaast is gekeken naar wat agrariërs en jagers mogelijk motiveert of juist tegenhoudt om in actie te komen. Op basis van de bevindingen zijn adviezen geformuleerd over hoe toekomstig beleid beter in kan spelen op de beleving van agrariërs en jagers.

In de programmering voor de huidige adviesperiode (2017-2021) is voorzien dat de Maatschappelijke Adviesraad Faunaschade advies afgeeft over een robuust ganzenbeleid. De Adviesraad heeft in 2019 besloten om de advisering over het ganzenbeleid gefaseerd uit te brengen. Bij de totstandkoming van het nu voorliggende advies heeft de Adviesraad gesprekken gevoerd met partijen die nauw bij het ganzenbeleid betrokken zijn. Voor u ligt het eindadvies dat allereerst ingaat op de context en de urgentie van de ganzenproblematiek, een gespreksagenda beschrijft en een uitwerking van de agendapunten geeft. Tot slot worden er aanbevelingen gedaan voor het proces waarmee dit vormgegeven kan worden. In de bijlage treft u de analyse aan van de ganzenproblematiek, die de Adviesraad mede als basis heeft gebruikt voor dit advies.

You are the WING WRANGLER, and you're on your way to wrangle some geese. They steal your equipment and lure you into a mysterious house in the woods. Will you wrangle the geese? Or will they wrangle you?

Migratory waterfowl, including geese and ducks, are indicated as the primary reservoir of avian influenza viruses (AIv) which can be subsequently spread to commercial poultry. The US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) surveillance efforts of waterfowl for AIv have been largely discontinued in the contiguous United States. Consequently, the use of technologies to identify areas of high waterfowl density and detect the presence of AIv in habitat such as wetlands has become imperative. Here we identified two high waterfowl density areas in California using processed NEXt generation RADar (NEXRAD) and collected water samples to test the efficacy of two tangential flow ultrafiltration methods and two nucleic acid based AIv detection assays. Whole-segment amplification and long-read sequencing yielded more positive samples than standard M-segment qPCR methods (57.6% versus 3.0%, p < .0001). We determined that this difference in positivity was due to mismatches in published primers to our samples and that these mismatches would result in failing to detect in the vast majority of currently sequenced AIv genomes in public databases. The whole segment sequences were subsequently used to provide subtype and potential host information of the AIv environmental reservoir. There was no statistically significant difference in sequencing reads recovered from the RexeedTM filtration compared to the unfiltered surface water. This overall approach combining remote sensing, filtration and sequencing provides a novel and potentially more effective, surveillance approach for AIv.

Over the last 40 years, many goose populations have recovered from historic lows and are now more numerous than ever. At the same time, geese have shifted from natural foraging habitats to securing most of their nutritional demands from agricultural fields, leading to crop damage and conflict with agriculture. We studied field use by Greylag Geese (Anser anser) in the agricultural landscape surrounding a main breeding and moulting lake in Sweden. From 2012 to 2016, weekly roadside surveys were conducted from May to July. Data were collected on goose numbers, crop type and sward height in agricultural fields. Using a compositional analysis, we demonstrate that Greylag Geese show a strong selection for ley and pasture fields compared to other crop types (rank order: ley/pasture > oat > barley > wheat > other crops). This selection was consistent across years and between pre- and post-moult. Aside from ley and pasture, no other croptypes were selected for, as they were used less than expected given their availability. Irrespective of crop type, geese foraged predominantly on short (0–10 cm) swards. The strong selection for ley and pasture may have been driven by higher nutritional quality of short, managed grass swards relative to other available foods. This suggests that during the summer grass fields may be more vulnerable to damage compared to other crop types. Our study provides a deeper understanding of the ecology of Greylag Geese, which may be used to inform management strategies focused on mitigating crop damage and alleviating conflict., Under de senaste 50 åren har åtskilliga gåspopulationer återhämtat sig från historiskt låga nivåer till att nu vara större än någonsin. Statistiska analyser (compositional analysis) visade att grägässen starkt föredrog fält med vall eller betesmark framför andra grödor (preferensordning: vall/betesmark > havre > korn > vete > övriga grödor). Preferensmönstret var det samma oberoende av år och period under sommaren (före resp. efter ruggning). Alla andra grödoslag än vall och betesmark var icke föredragna, eftersom de utnyttjades mindre än deras andel av studieområdet. Den starka preferensen för vall och betesmark kan vara en följd av en högre näringsmässig kvalitet hos gräs som ännu inte blivit högvuxet. Detta antyder i sin tur att fält med kort gräs är mer utsatta för gåsbete än andra grödor under sommarmånaderna. Denna studie ger ny kunskap om grágässens uppträdande på jordbruksmark under senvår och sommar, vilken kan ge förbättrade förvaltningsstrategier för att minska betesskador och reducera konflikten med jordbruksintressen.

During 2014, highly pathogenic (HP) influenza A viruses (IAVs) of the A/Goose/Guangdong/1/1996 lineage (GsGD-HP-H5), originating from Asia, were detected in domestic poultry and wild birds in Canada and the US. These clade 2.3.4.4 GsGD-HP-H5 viruses included reassortants possessing North American lineage gene segments; were detected in wild birds in the Pacific, Central, and Mississippi flyways; and caused the largest HP IAV outbreak in poultry in US history. To determine if an antibody response indicative of previous infection with clade 2.3.4.4 GsGD-HP-H5 IAV could be detected in North American wild waterfowl sampled before, during, and after the 2014-15 outbreak, sera from 2,793 geese and 3,715 ducks were tested by blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and hemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests using both clade 2.3.4.4 GsGD-HPH5 and North American lineage low pathogenic (LP) H5 IAV antigens. We detected an antibody response meeting a comparative titer-based criteria (HI titer observed with 2.3.4.4 GsGD-HP-H5 antigens exceeded the titer observed for LP H5 antigen by two or more dilutions) for previous infection with clade 2.3.4.4 GsGD-HP-H5 IAV in only five birds, one Blue-winged Teal (Spatula discors) sampled during the outbreak and three Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and one Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) sampled during the post-outbreak period. These serologic results are consistent with the spatiotemporal extent of the outbreak in wild birds in North America during 2014 and 2015 and limited exposure of waterfowl to GsGD-HP-H5 IAV, particularly in the central and eastern US.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus that originates from Africa and at present causes neurological disease in birds, horses, and humans all around the globe. As West Nile fever is an important zoonosis, the role of free-ranging domestic poultry as a source of infection for humans should be evaluated. This study examined the pathogenicity of an Italian WNV lineage 1 strain for domestic poultry (chickens, ducks, and geese) held in Germany. All three species were subcutaneously injected with WNV, and the most susceptible species was also inoculated via mosquito bite. All species developed various degrees of viremia, viral shedding (oropharyngeal and cloacal), virus accumulation, and pathomorphological lesions. Geese were most susceptible, displaying the highest viremia levels. The tested waterfowl, geese, and especially ducks proved to be ideal sentinel species for WNV due to their high antibody levels and relatively low blood viral loads. None of the three poultry species can function as a reservoir/amplifying host for WNV, as their viremia levels most likely do not suffice to infect feeding mosquitoes. Due to the recent appearance of WNV in Germany, future pathogenicity studies should also include local virus strains.

In contrast to conventional commercial poultry, which are raised primarily in controlled indoor environments, backyard poultry are typically raised in less restricted settings, potentially exposing them to a greater variety of ingestible substances, including multiple types of forage. Consequently, problems such as gastrointestinal impactions caused by ingesta have been noted in backyard poultry. To determine the prevalence of these impactions in backyard poultry, we performed a retrospective database search for autopsy submissions to the California Animal Health and Food Safety laboratory system and found that gastrointestinal impaction was associated with the death of 42 backyard poultry cases (40 chickens, 1 turkey, and 1 goose) from January 2013 to July 2018. In 32 of these 42 (76%) cases, the impaction was caused by fibrous plant material, 7 (17%) by compacted feed, and 3 (7%) by miscellaneous ingesta (tortilla, plastic, and wood shavings). The large proportion of grass impactions indicate that foraging is the predominant source of impaction material in backyard poultry, and that long grasses may be a significant health hazard for poultry. Backyard, pasture-raised, and free-range poultry producers are advised to maintain short pastures, avoid feeds that may expand in the gastrointestinal tract, and provide adequate grit to prevent impactions.

A comprehensive understanding of common diseases of backyard poultry flocks is important to providing poultry health information to flock owners, veterinarians, and animal health officials. We collected autopsy reports over a 3-y period (2015-2017) from diagnostic laboratories in 8 states in the United States; 2,509 reports were collected, involving autopsies of 2,687 birds. The primary cause of mortality was categorized as infectious, noninfectious, neoplasia or lymphoproliferative disease, or undetermined. Neoplasia or lymphoproliferative disease was the most common primary diagnosis and involved 42% of the total birds autopsied; 63% of these cases were diagnosed as Marek's disease or leukosis/sarcoma. Bacterial, parasitic, and viral organisms were commonly detected, involving 42%, 28%, and 7% of the birds autopsied, respectively, with 2 or more organisms detected in 69% of birds. Our findings demonstrate the importance of educating flock owners about disease prevention and biosecurity practices. The detection of zoonotic bacteria including paratyphoid salmonellae, Campylobacter spp., Listeria monocytogenes, and Mycobacterium avium, and the detection of lead and other heavy metals, indicate public health risks to flock owners and consumers of backyard flock egg and meat products.

After the Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE) crisis most processed animal proteins (PAPs) were banned from use in animal feed. For the foreseen reintroduction of pork PAPs in poultry feed, and poultry PAPs in pork feed and to comply with the species-to-species ban that prohibits cannibalism, a sensitive and specific TaqMan PCR detection method for poultry DNA has been designed and published. This poultry method is able to detect DNA of chicken, turkey, duck and geese in one PCR reaction. PAPs however, are a difficult and variable matrix. Therefore, the usability of the poultry method was investigated on a range of different poultry PAPs. It was shown that the poultry detection method is capable of detecting poultry DNA in eight out of nine different poultry PAPs mixed at a 0.1% level in chicken feed. The method can also detect at least 0.1% poultry PAPs mixed in pork PAPs. These results show that the poultry method fulfils the 0.1% detection limit requirement in the EU legislation.

We aimed to investigate the potential influence of increasing goose abundance on trophic state, taxon richness, and species composition of freshwater communities in the high Arctic. We hypothesised that higher goose abundance affects the trophic state of shallow lakes and ponds and their taxon richness and species composition. We conducted a survey of selected ponds at Svalbard along a goose abundance gradient. We used the number of area-specific goose droppings (range of 0–94 droppings m 2 ) as a proxy of goose presence and measured proxies for productivity as well as taxon richness and composition of phytoplankton and invertebrate communities. Presence and abundance of geese were associated with higher productivity of ponds. Invertebrate and phytoplankton taxon richness correlated (positively) with goose abundance. Both phytoplankton and invertebrate taxon richness increased with increasing nitrogen (N) concentrations. Goose abundance significantly affected phytoplankton species composition, while concentrations of total-N and total phosphorus (P) did not. Species composition of aquatic invertebrates was most strongly affected by goose abundance, but the effect of total-N concentration was also significant. Increased goose abundance was associated with bird driven nutrient enrichment, increased phytoplankton and invertebrate taxon richness and changes of these biological communities. Background: The common tick Ixodes ricinus and the taiga tick I. persulcatus are the main tick vectors of Borrelia spirochaetes, TBE virus (TBEV) and of several other zoonotic pathogens in the western and eastern areas, respectively of the Palaearctic region. Recently, populations of the taiga tick were, for the first time, detected in northern Sweden. This prompted us to investigate if they harbour human pathogens. Methods: A total of 276 I. persulcatus ticks (136 males, 126 females and 14 nymphs) and one I. ricinus nymph was collected by the cloth-dragging method in northern Sweden in July-August 2015 and May-July 2016. In addition, 8 males and 10 females of I. persulcatus were collected from two dogs (16 and 2 ticks, respectively) in two of the localities. All ticks were microscopically and molecularly identified to developmental stage and species and screened for B. burgdorferi (sensu lato), B. miyamotoi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Babesia spp. and TBEV using real-time PCR followed by species identification by sequencing the PCR-products of conventional PCR assays. Results: Of the ticks collected by the cloth-dragging method, 55% (152/277) were positive for Borrelia. There was no significant difference between the proportions of Borrelia-infected nymphs (33%, 5/15) and Borrelia-infected adult ticks (56%, 147/262), and no significant difference between the proportions of Borrelia-infected males (54%, 74/136) and Borrelia-infected females (58%, 73/126). Three different Borrelia species were identified. Borrelia afzelii was the predominant species and detected in 46% of all Borrelia-infected ticks followed by B. garinii, 35%, B. valaisiana, 1%, and mixed infections of different Borrelia species, 1%; 17% of all Borrelia-infections were untypeable. One I. persulcatus female contained Rickettsia helvetica, and one nymph contained Rickettsia sp. Of the 277 ticks analysed, all were negative for A. phagocytophilum, Babesia spp.

The distribution of food resources is a key factor in habitat selection. Herbivorous waterfowl prefer early-stage growing plants (from the onset of plant growth to the peak in nutrient biomass) as these offer higher energy intake rates. This plant development stage is not fully captured by commonly used satellite-derived vegetation indicators, which focus on plant biomass (e.g., Enhanced Vegetation Index, EVI) or active plant growth (e.g., the differential EVI between current and a previous date, diffEVI). To improve mapping suitable grazing areas for herbivorous waterfowl, we propose a new satellite-based plant growth indicator of early-stage plant growth (ESPG). We hypothesize that herbivorous waterfowl prefer plants at an early development stage during the growing season and select plants with a relatively later end of ESPG during the non-growing season. We use satellite tracking data of 20 greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) wintering in the Yangtze River floodplain to validate our predictions. We build generalized linear models for goose distributions during the growing and non-growing seasons and compare the performance of ESPG to commonly used plant growth indictors (EVI and diffEVI). During the growing season, ESPG can explain 53% of variation in the goose distribution, outperforming EVI (27%) and diffEVI (34%). During the non-growing season, only the end of ESPG significantly influences goose distribution, explaining 25% of the variance (ESPG: AUC = 0.78; EVI: AUC = 0.58; diffEVI: AUC = 0.58). The newly-developed plant growth indicator ESPG could be used to improve models of herbivorous waterfowl distributions and hence support efforts toward waterfowl conservation and wetland management.

Annotated genomes can provide new perspectives on the biology of species. We present the first de novo whole genome sequencing for the pink-footed goose. In order to obtain a high-quality de novo assembly the strategy used was to combine one short insert paired-end library with two mate-pair libraries. The pink-footed goose genome was assembled de novo using three different assemblers and an assembly evaluation was subsequently performed in order to choose the best assembler. For our data, ALLPATHS-LG performed the best, since the assembly produced covers most of the genome, while introducing the fewest errors. A total of 26,134 genes were annotated, with bird species accounting for virtually all BLAST hits. We also estimated the substitution rate in the pink-footed goose, which can be of use in future demographic studies, by using a comparative approach with the genome of the chicken, the mallard and the swan goose. A substitution rate of 1.38 x 10(-7) per nucleotide per generation was obtained when comparing the genomes of the two closely-related goose species (the pink-footed and the swan goose). Altogether, we provide a valuable tool for future genomic studies aiming at particular genes and regions of the pink-footed goose genome as well as other bird species.
