Preterm birth (PTB) is a complex trait, but little is known regarding its major genetic determinants. The objective of this study is to localize genes that influence susceptibility to PTB in Mexican Americans (MAs), a minority population in the USA, using predominantly microfilmed birth certificate-based data obtained from the San Antonio Family Birth Weight Study. Only 1302 singleton births from 288 families with information on PTB and significant covariates were considered for genetic analysis. PTB is defined as a childbirth that occurs at <37 completed weeks of gestation, and the prevalence of PTB in this sample was 6.4%. An ∼10 cM genetic map was used to conduct a genome-wide linkage analysis using the program SOLAR. The heritability of PTB was high (h2 ± SE: 0.75 ± 0.20) and significant (P = 4.5 × 10−5), after adjusting for the significant effects of birthweight and birth order. We found significant evidence for linkage of PTB (LOD = 3.6; nominal P = 2.3 × 10−5; empirical P = 1.0 × 10−5) on chromosome 18q between markers D18S1364 and D18S541. Several other chromosomal regions (2q, 9p, 16q and 20q) were also potentially linked with PTB. A strong positional candidate gene in the 18q linked region is SERPINB2 or PAI-2, a member of the plasminogen activator system that is associated with various reproductive processes. In conclusion, to our knowledge, perhaps for the first time in MAs or US populations, we have localized a major susceptibility locus for PTB on chromosome 18q21.33-q23.

The dynamical response of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) to mesoscale sea surface temperature (SST) perturbations is investigated over the Agulhas Return Current during winter from a 1-month, high-resolution, three-dimensional simulation using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) mesoscale model. A steady lower boundary condition for July 2002 is obtained using SST measurements from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer on the Earth Observing System (EOS)-Aqua satellite (AMSR-E). The WRF models' ability to accurately simulate the SST-induced surface wind response is demonstrated from a comparison with satellite surface wind observations from the SeaWinds scatterometer on the Quick Scatterometer (QuikSCAT) satellite. Relevant features of this simulation include a quasi periodic distribution of mesoscale SST perturbations with spatial scales ;200 km and strong winds that lead to a large surface sensible heat flux response, whose broad range of 80-100 W m22 between warm and cool SST perturbations is much larger than seen in most previous simulations of mesoscale wind-SST coupling. This simulation provides the first realistic example of vertical turbulent redistribution of momentum driven by the SST-induced surface heating perturbations acting in concert with the SST-induced pressure gradients to accelerate near-surface flow toward warm water and decelerate near-surface flow toward cool water. This simulation is also the first example of a near-surface wind speed response to mesoscale SST perturbations that differs qualitatively and substantially from the vertically averaged MABL wind response. In the vertically averaged MABL momentum budget, the surface wind stress acts as a drag on the SST-induced perturbation flow as it is being accelerated by SST-induced pressure gradients. This report is concerned with input-output from an electromagnetic process. The input is a component of the field generated by the experimenter. The output is a component of the field scattered by an object. The goal is to determine, from the data, characteristics of the scatterer. We consider both complex exponential (global) and ray-optic (load) modeling. We report results from the both simulated data and experimental data obtained on the transient ranges at NOSC and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In complex exponential modeling, we conclude that pole identification can be accomplished to a high degree of accuracy. Relating these data poles to complex resonances of the scatterer, however, is limited to high-Q cases in a low noise environment. Our results in ray-optic modeling are preliminary. We find serious difficulties in discriminating between smooth objects with the same radius of curvature and between identifical objects with different curvatures. Previously reported work under this task focused only on the development of a replacement instrument for the AN/SQM-5 Sonar Noise Recorder. The development of this test set has been absorbed into the development of a larger test set that is now referred to as the AN/UQM-( ) previously called the AN/WQM-( ). The 'U' in the nomenclature indicates multiple areas of application (surface ship, submarine, shore based, etc.) whereas 'W' means only surface or subsurface vessel applications. In addition, ARL:UT has worked on a task in support of the Sonar Alignment and Calibration Site (SACS), with particular emphasis on AN/SQS-35/38 system testing.

We give a description of the electromagnetic transient range facility (EMTRF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). We discuss the range design and show the instrumentation for both time domain and broadband frequency domain measurements. We give two examples of experiments on the range: Scattering from a conducting plate and transmission through an aperture in a screen. We discuss parametric modeling in transient wave scattering. We review global modeling based on the body resonances of the scattering object and give two examples. We explore the nature of the incompleteness of global models and introduce the concept of the local model, based on ray-optic methods. We include an example of local modeling. We show that the local model is an order of magnitude more parsimonious and more robust in the presence of noise, compared to the global model. We conclude with a discussion indicating that the local model has a better probability of success in practical target classification because of its performance in a noisy environment. Experimentally determined values for the transfer of carbon fibers through air filters and electrical equipment cabinets are given together with a description of an improved technique for measuring carbon fiber exposure. The data show that even coarse filters greatly reduce the transfer of carbon fibers.

Twenty papers, a panel discussion, suggested standard symbols for use in research, and an annotated bibliography containing about 290 items on gas- lubricated bearings are presented. The general aspects of the subject of gas bearings are reviewed, the special characteristics are described, and present and anticipated areas of application are listed. Research on gas bearings in the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, at the National Engineering Laboratory, Scotland, and in Japan is reviewed. The theory and design of self-acting, externally pressurized with compressible lubricant, and a bearing of high stability were described; journal, thrust, and pivot bearing designs were included in these discussions.

The review covers results of research in a spectrum of gas-bearing configurations, applications of gas bearings in various use categories, and future prospects.

ARL evaluated the AN/SQS-23 TR-208A transducer (serial BTD-2-69) by measurements at the Lake Travis Test Station in April 1969 and by shipboard measurements in September 1969. The principal measurements made were complex impedance (Z and 0) of individual transducer elements, driven individually at operating power. A conclusion drawn from this work is that impedance data measured on the bare transducer in open water compare (to within measurement accuracy) with the shipboard measurements made in the dome. This is a highly favorable indication and is a further incentive for the widespread use of element impedance measurements for transducer evaluation. In the past, such measurements have proved to be very effective at diagnosing transducer failures and impending failures. (Author)
