A semi-autonomous prosthesis control based on computer vision can be used to improve performance while decreasing the cognitive burden, especially when using advanced systems with multiple functions. However, a drawback of this approach is that it relies on the complex processing of a significant amount of data (e.g., a point cloud provided by a depth sensor), which can be a challenge when deploying such a system onto an embedded prosthesis controller. In the present study, therefore, we propose a novel method to reconstruct the shape of the target object using minimal data. Specifically, four concurrent laser scanner lines provide partial contours of the object cross-section. Simple geometry is then used to reconstruct the dimensions and orientation of spherical, cylindrical and cuboid objects. The prototype system was implemented using depth sensor to simulate the scan lines and vibrotactile feedback to aid the user during aiming of the laser towards the target object. The prototype was tested on ten able-bodied volunteers who used the semi-autonomous prosthesis to grasp a set of ten objects of different shape, size and orientation. The novel prototype was compared against the benchmark system, which used the full depth data. The results showed that novel system could be used to successfully handle all the objects, and that the performance improved with training, although it was still somewhat worse compared to the benchmark. The present study is therefore an important step towards building a compact system for embedded depth sensing specialized for prosthesis grasping.

The stringent timing and reliability requirements in mission-critical applications require a detailed statistical characterization of the latency. Teleoperation is a representative use case, in which a human operator (HO) remotely controls a robot by exchanging command and feedback signals. We present a framework to analyze the latency of a closed-loop teleoperation system consisting of three entities: HO, robot located in remote environment, and a Base Station (BS) with Mobile edge Computing (MEC) capabilities. A model of each component of the system is used to analyze the closed-loop latency and decide upon the optimal compression strategy. The closed-form expression of the distribution of the closed-loop latency is difficult to estimate, such that suitable upper and lower bounds are obtained. We formulate a non-convex optimization problem to minimize the closed-loop latency. Using the obtained upper and lower bound on the closed-loop latency, a computationally efficient procedure to optimize the closed-loop latency is presented. The simulation results reveal that compression of sensing data is not always beneficial, while system design based on average performance leads to under-provisioning and may cause performance degradation. An extension of such feelings toward robots has been argued as being crucial for assistive technologies aiming at restoring, extending, or simulating sensorimotor functions. Empirical and theoretical work illustrates the importance of sensory feedback for the feeling of embodiment and also immersion; we focus on the the perceptual level of touch and the role of tactile feedback in various assistive robotic devices. We critically review how different facets of tactile perception in humans, i.e., affective, social, and self-touch, might influence embodiment. Pathological tremors are involuntary oscillatory movements which cannot be fully attenuated using conventional treatments. For this reason, several studies have investigated the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for tremor suppression. In a recent study, however, we found that electrical stimulation below the motor threshold also suppressed tremor, indicating involvement of afferent pathways. In this study, we further explored this possibility by systematically investigating how tremor suppression by afferent stimulation depends on the stimulation settings. In this way, we aimed at identifying the optimal stimulation strategy, as well as to elucidate the underlying physiological mechanisms of tremor suppression. Stimulation strategies varying the stimulation intensity and pulse timing were tested in nine tremor patients using either intramuscular or surface stimulation. Significant tremor suppression was observed in six patients (tremor suppression > 75% was observed in three patients) and the average optimal suppression level observed across all subjects was 52%. The efficiency for each stimulation setting, however, varied substantially across patients and it was not possible to identify a single set of stimulation parameters that yielded positive results in all patients. For example, tremor suppression was achieved both with stimulation delivered in an out-of-phase pattern with respect to the tremor, and with random timing of the stimulation. Overall, these results indicate that low-current stimulation of afferent fibers is a promising approach for tremor suppression, but that further research is required to identify how the effect can be maximized in the individual patient.

Modern assistive devices are very sophisticated systems with multiple degrees of freedom. However, an effective and user-friendly control of these systems is still an open problem since conventional human-machine interfaces (HMI) cannot easily accommodate the system’s complexity. In HMIs, the user is responsible for generating unique patterns of command signals directly triggering the device functions. This approach can be difficult to implement when there are many functions (necessitating many command patterns) and/or the user has a considerable impairment (limited number of available signal sources). In this study, we propose a novel concept for a general-purpose HMI where the controller and the user communicate bidirectionally to select the desired function. The system first presents possible choices to the user via electro-tactile stimulation; the user then acknowledges the desired choice by generating a single command signal. Therefore, the proposed approach simplifies the user communication interface (one signal to generate), decoding (one signal to recognize), and allows selecting from a number of options. To demonstrate the new concept the method was used in one particular application, namely, to implement the control of all the relevant functions in a state of the art commercial prosthetic hand without using any myoelectric channels. We performed experiments in healthy subjects and with one amputee to test the feasibility of the novel approach. The results showed that the performance of the novel HMI concept was comparable or, for some outcome measures, better than the classic myoelectric interfaces. The presented approach has a general applicability and the obtained results point out that it could be used to operate various assistive systems (e.g., prosthesis vs. wheelchair), or it could be integrated into other control schemes (e.g., myoelectric control, brain-machine interfaces) in order to improve the usability of existing low-bandwidth HMIs.

There is a large proportion of patients (around 25%) in whom current treatments do not attain a significant tremor reduction. This paper proposes a tremor suppression strategy that detects tremor from the electromyographic signals of the muscles from which tremor originates and counteracts it by delivering electrical stimulation to the antagonist muscles in an out of phase manner. The detection was based on the Iterative Hilbert Transform and stimulation was delivered above the motor threshold (motor stimulation) and below the motor threshold (sensory stimulation). The system was tested on 6 patients with predominant wrist flexion/extension tremor (4 with Parkinson disease and 2 with Essential tremor) and led to an average tremor reduction in the range of 46-81% and 35-48% across 5 patients when using the motor and sensory stimulation, respectively. In one patient, the system did not attenuate tremor. These results demonstrate that tremor attenuation might be achieved by delivering electrical stimulation below the motor threshold, preventing muscle fatigue and discomfort for the patients, which sets the basis for the development of an alternative treatment for tremor

We developed the STIMBELT, an electrical stimulation system that comprises a lumbar belt with up to eight pairs of embedded electrodes and an eight-channel electronic stimulator. The STIMBELT is an assistive system for the treatment of low-back pain (LBP). We describe here technical details of the system and summarize the results of its application in individuals with subacute and chronic LBP. The direct goals of the treatment were to relieve pain, reduce muscle spasms, increase strength and range of motion, and educate individuals with LBP in reducing the chances of its reoccurrence. The outcome measures include: a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), the Oswestry LBP Disability Questionnaire, the Short Form (SF)-12 health survey, and the Manual Muscle Test.
