Ethanol release was tested in relation to seed vigour measured by seedling emergence and controlled deterioration tolerance in radish, pepper, watermelon, aubergine, leek and onion seed lots. Ethanol release, measured with six lots from each species after four and eight hours at 40°C and 30% seed moisture, was highly negatively correlated with controlled deterioration tolerance (45°C, 48 hours, 20% seed moisture) in radish (r = 0.05, P < 0.05), with seedling emergence in watermelon (r = 0.99, P < 0.01) and to both traits in pepper (r = 0.87 to 0.94, P < 0.05), but not with any variable for aubergine and leek. One single case was significant between ethanol release after eight hours and controlled deterioration for onion seeds. Results indicate that there is a relationship between ethanol release and seed vigour, but this appears to be species dependent.

The objective of this study is to investigate the improvement possibilities of the floatability of galena with ultrasonic application in the presence of potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX). For this purpose, micro-flotation experiments were carried out in addition to surface chemistry studies including zeta potential, contact angle, and bubble-particle attachment time measurements at various ultrasonic power levels and conditioning time. The results showed that, the maximum micro-flotation recovery of 77.5% was obtained with 30 W ultrasound power and 2 min conditioning time. In addition, more negative zeta potential values were obtained with ultrasound as well as higher contact angle and lower bubble-particle attachment time, which indicated the increased hydrophobicity of galena with ultrasound. We present the DeepGlobe 2018 Satellite Image Understanding Challenge, which includes three public competitions for segmentation, detection, and classification tasks on satellite images (Figure 1). Similar to other challenges in computer vision domain such as DAVIS[21] and COCO[33], DeepGlobe proposes three datasets and corresponding evaluation methodologies, coherently bundled in three competitions with a dedicated workshop co-located with CVPR 2018. We observed that satellite imagery is a rich and structured source of information, yet it is less investigated than everyday images by computer vision researchers. However, bridging modern computer vision with remote sensing data analysis could have critical impact to the way we understand our environment and lead to major breakthroughs in global urban planning or climate change research. Keeping such bridging objective in mind, DeepGlobe aims to bring together researchers from different domains to raise awareness of remote sensing in the computer vision community and vice-versa. We aim to improve and evaluate state-of-the-art satellite image understanding approaches, which can hopefully serve as reference benchmarks for future research in the same topic. In this paper, we analyze characteristics of each dataset, define the evaluation criteria of the competitions, and provide baselines for each task.

MgB2 bulk superconductors were prepared by hot press plus furnace heating method. Two types of boron powders were used, one is amorphous nano boron and the other is C-doped boron. Characteristics of superconductors were determined by XRD and resistance measurements. Systematic levitation force measurements were performed by using a modular system at low temperatures. These bulk superconductors showed around 9 N repulsive and 4 N attractive forces in the z-axis at 20 K at closest point to the cryostat lid which contains the MgB2 superconductor. These values slightly decreased by increasing temperature to 24 and 28 K for both samples. Comparing two samples, nano boron MgB2 showed slightly higher levitation force than C-doped MgB2 although C-doped MgB2 has higher attractive force value at the closest point. This situation points out that C-doped MgB2 is much proper for attractive force applications (as guidance force) while the nanoboron MgB2 sample is much appropriate for repulsive force (as levitation).

The apparent predictability of stock prices, and the related profitability of investment strategies based on this, has generated a great deal of research. Since the late 1980s, momentum strategies have attracted considerable attention and have been found to be profitable in numerous markets. This paper investigates the returns to short-term and intermediate-horizon momentum strategies in the Australian equity market. We focus on `practical or `realistic investment strategies, and find that momentum is prevalent in the Australian market and that the returns are of greater magnitude than previously found in overseas markets. These momentum strategy returns are robust to risk adjustment and prevail over time. We also examine the interaction of momentum on size and liquidity variables and conclude that the observed profits to these investment strategies are not explained by size or liquidity differences among the stocks.

Research effort was concentrated upon building two heavy-duty membrane presses, securing adequate bulk samples of natural clays, and reviewing literature. The principal portion of the contract effort reported here is contained in two completed Ph.D. theses, by William M. Benzel and Paul R. Haydon, and one that is nearing completion, by Ilham Demir. These theses consider the effect upon clay-membrane transport at 20 C of the thickness and fabric of the clay cake, the effect of temperature in the range 20-180 C upon membrane transport and membrane fractionation of the stable oxygen isotopes contained in water molecules, and the electrokinetic behavior of these clay membranes at 20 C. It becomes possible after completion of these many months of experimental runs to evaluate the difficulties encountered with experimental apparatus., Continuation of Grant DAAG29-77-G-0011.
