Abstract

This thesis studies the existence and the extent of EU Member States' obligations, under international and European human rights law, in the context of humanitarian visa applications introduced within their diplomatic or consular representations abroad by third-country nationals in need of international protection. Analyzing the concepts of jurisdiction, positive obligations to protect and applicability of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, this thesis concludes that EU Member States can be required to issue the requested humanitarian visas in order to grant safe and legal access to their territory when there is no other alternative effectively protecting the applicants from remote, but foreseeable, risks of harm, in accordance with their obligation of non-refoulement., Doctorat en Sciences juridiques, info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Ce phénomène a amené la Suisse à devenir un acteur majeur dans la formation des cadres de l’industrie hôtelière mondiale. Aujourd’hui, le pays compte une vingtaine d’établissements privés, parmi lesquels domine la prestigieuse École hôtelière de Lausanne. Un univers assez peu connu où paradoxalement, ces formations professionnalisantes – a priori peu valorisées par rapport aux filières universitaires – sont très prisées par une population fortunée, prête à venir en Suisse et à payer le prix fort.Dans cet ouvrage, l’auteure revient sur la genèse et la transformation des écoles hôtelières helvétiques ; elle propose une description fine et instructive de leur fonctionnement, de leur positionnement à l’international, de leurs publics ; elle expose leurs discours et stratégies qui visent la construction d’une réputation à diffuser à travers le monde, afin de susciter l’inscription de milliers d’étudiant·e·s chaque année.Au-delà d’analyser les spécificités de ces cursus, l’auteure questionne les acteurs présents et les échelons territoriaux existants dans ce qui est appelé « l’internationalisation de l’enseignement ». 5. From trash to treasure: Accounting for global unavoidable food loss and waste of vegetables and fruits and exploring valorisation strategies

Abstract

Food loss and waste (FLW) generation is a global issue that has recently gained an increasing attention. It has previously been estimated that approximately one third of all food globally produced is wasted. Recently, other accounts have been made, for various food products and focusing on various geographical scopes, sometimes disaggregating between various qualities of FLW, but none was found to quantify FLW per quality at the global level. This would be a pertinent addition to the ongoing research, as the type of treatment (or valorisation) possible is dependent on the type of FLW, and this would be of great relevance in the global actions towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 aiming at the reduction of food loss and food waste globally by halve by 2030. Additionally, recent literature focuses on avoidable FLW or does not separate between avoidable and unavoidable, although it is essential to address unavoidable FLW on its own as by its nature it cannot simply be prevented and its generation should thus be appropriately managed. Therefore, this thesis project aimed at answering how much food is currently being lost and wasted regarding fruits and vegetables at the global level and how it can be valorised. In the first part of the research, a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) was conducted at the global level to quantify unavoidable loss generated at the processing stage and unavoidable waste generated at the retail and consumption stages. The results show that the fruit value chain generates more unavoidable loss and waste than the vegetable value chain and that the retail and consumption stages generate more unavoidable waste than the processing stage of unavoidable loss. Additionally, regional hotspots were identified. In the second part of the research, an assessment of the valorisation pathways is conducted on the category of loss and waste streams identified as the most problematic by the MFA results, which was fruit and vegetable, Industrial Ecology

7. Anxiety in Parkinson's disease: A resting-state high density EEG study

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To identify markers of Parkinson's disease (PD) related anxiety, using high density electroencephalography (hd-EEG).METHODS: 108 patients participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: with and without clinically relevant anxiety, according to their score on the Parkinson Anxiety Scale. Resting-state hd-EEG was recorded. Spectral and functional connectivity characteristics were compared between the two groups.RESULTS: Thirty-three patients (31%) had significant anxiety symptoms. In the spectral analysis, relative power in the alpha1 frequency band in the right prefrontal cortex was lower in patients with anxiety than without. Functional connectivity analysis showed a stronger connectivity between the left insula and several regions of the right prefrontal cortex in patients with anxiety than in those without.CONCLUSION: This study shows the pivotal role of the insula and frontal cortex in the pathophysiology of anxiety in PD and extends the results of previous studies using magnetic resonance imaging or positron emission tomography imaging.

8. The frontostriatal subtype of mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease, but not the posterior cortical one, is associated with specific EEG alterations

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The 'dual syndrome' hypothesis states that two cognitive subtypes can be distinguished in mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI): a frontostriatal one, characterized by attentional and/or executive deficits, and a posterior cortical one, characterized by visuospatial, memory and/or language deficits. The latter type has been associated with a higher risk of earlier development of PD dementia. The functional bases of these subtypes remain partly unknown.OBJECTIVE: To identify EEG modifications associated with PD-MCI subtypes.METHODS: 75 non-demented PD patients underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment and a high-density EEG. They were classified as having normal cognition (PD-NC; n = 37), PD-MCI with a frontostriatal subtype (PD-FS; n = 11) or PD-MCI with a posterior cortical subtype (PD-PC; n = 27). Two EEG analyses were performed: (a) spectral powers quantification and (b) functional connectivity analysis.RESULTS: PD-FS patients displayed spectral and functional EEG alterations, namely (a) higher powers in the theta and delta bands, (b) lower powers in the beta2 band and (c) lower functional connectivity in the beta2 band compared to PD-NC and PD-PC patients. These alterations were mainly located in the frontal, limbic and parietal regions. There were no significant differences between PD-NC and PD-PC.CONCLUSION: EEG alterations previously reported in PD-MCI may only concern the frontostriatal subtype, and not the posterior-cortical subtype. This provides evidence for the dual syndrome hypothesis and emphasizes the importance of identifying PD-MCI subtypes. It also shows the promising potential of EEG to discriminate between PD-MCI subtypes.

9. Legitimising an unusual choice abroad for privileged students:Swiss hospitality management schools as 'refuge schools'

Abstract

This article aims to bring back into circulation Bourdieu's concept of 'refuge school' to analyse transnational migration for higher education, of privileged students who cannot access the most academically selective institutions. Through the case study of Swiss Hospitality Management Schools (SHMS), I investigate the discursive strategy co-produced by individuals and these institutions to valorise an 'unusual' educational choice abroad. Interviews with staff, alumni and students reveal how SHMS are able to appear prestigious by marketing themselves as the best in their area, unique and elitist. I stress that students' discourses of legitimisation differ according to their home country, which reflects the national hierarchies at play in the field of international higher education. While 'western' students emphasise their personality and emotional intelligence as a perfect fit with the hospitality industry to explain their choice, students from Asia present it as a strategy that affords them a second chance at success.

Abstract

Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is one of the most economically important fruit crops worldwide and is cultivated in more than 90 countries nowadays. In ten years, the Belgian wine-growing area has more than quadrupled and this continues to increase. A reason is that drought events will be more frequent in Belgium, resulting from climate change. Grapevine has emerged as a model perennial fruit crop for the study of drought effects, as it affects hydraulics of the plant and fruit composition. There are numerous hydraulic traits that determine a vine’s response to water availability: stomatal regulation, root characteristics, xylem architecture, aquaporin regulation, ABA dynamics and osmotic adjustment. All these traits can also be influenced by the grape variety, the rootstock, the soil, other environmental variables such as VPD and light, and their interactions, which also play important roles in the composition and quality of grapes. How different couples variety-rootstock respond to drought, in terms of hydraulics and fruit quality, remains an open and critical question. It is also unclear to what extent regulations of vine hydraulics result from innate genotypic traits or environmental factors. Numerous gaps remain in our understanding of the vine’s behavior in oceanic temperate climate and how climate change could affect Belgian viticulture.

11. Accesibilidad urbana y conectividad de los centros de empleo en Culiacán

Abstract

L'anàlisi de l'accés a les oportunitats de la ciutat és l'objectiu de l'evolució del paradigma de mobilitat a un d'accessibilitat urbana. En aquest article, aquesta anàlisi està emmarcada per les teories de la ciutat monocèntrica i la centralitat de la xarxa, aquesta última com a aproximació a l'accessibilitat sobre la base de la infraestructura viària que suporta els viatges. Aquest estudi s'enfoca a la concentració de les activitats laborals i la connectivitat com a qualitat dels vincles rellevants entre l'ocupació i la població ocupada. Per a l'abordatge de la connectivitat es van utilitzar quatre mesures diferents de centralitat per mitjà d'eines de processament a SIG: per proximitat, grau de centralitat, per intermediació i “eigenvector”, procurant una anàlisi múltiple de la xarxa. Pel que fa a la concentració del treball a la ciutat, es van aplicar els mètodes didentificació de subcentres urbans: pics de densitat docupació en zones contigües i llindars de concentració. Per a aquests mètodes es va utilitzar informació de l'INEGI, disponible a nivell nacional a Mèxic. Els resultats revelen quantitativament els trets de connectivitat de la xarxa de la ciutat i la força del centre urbà a causa de la concentració de llocs de treball i la seva connectivitat. De la mateixa manera per a cada centre de treball, segons el nombre de llocs ocupats, població ocupada amb potencial accessibilitat i la connectivitat de la seva àrea de servei, expressada per les diferents formes de centralitat., The analysis of access to opportunities in the city is the objective of the evolution of the mobility paradigm into an accessibility paradigm. This analysis is framed in the theories of the monocentric city and the network centrality as an approach to accessibility based on road infrastructure supporting travel. This study focuses on the concentration of work activities and connectivity as a quality of the relevant links between employment and the employed population. For the connectivity approach, four different centrality measures were used by means of GIS processing tools: closeness, degree of centrality, betweenness and “eigenvector”, searching for a multiple analysis of the network. With regard to the concentration of work in the city, the applied methods to identify urban sub-centers were: employment density peaks in contiguous areas and concentration thresholds. Information from INEGI, available at the national level in Mexico, was used for all these methods. The results quantitatively reveal the connectivity features of the city network and the strength of the urban center due to the concentration of jobs and connectivity. In the same way for each employment center, according to the number of job positions occupied, employed population with potential accessibility and the connectivity of its service area, expressed by the different forms of centrality., El análisis del acceso a las oportunidades de la ciudad es el objetivo de la evolución del paradigma de movilidad a uno de accesibilidad urbana. En este artículo, dicho análisis está enmarcado por las teorías de la ciudad monocéntrica y la centralidad de la red, esta última como aproximación a la accesibilidad con base en la infraestructura vial que soporta los viajes. El presente estudio se enfoca en la concentración de las actividades laborales y la conectividad como cualidad de los vínculos relevantes entre el empleo y la población ocupada. Para el abordaje de la conectividad se utilizaron cuatro medidas diferentes de centralidad por medio de herramientas de procesamiento en SIG: por cercanía, grado de centralidad, por intermediación y “eigenvector”, procurando un análisis múltiple de la red. Con respecto a la concentración del trabajo en la ciudad, se aplicaron los métodos de identificación de subcentros urbanos: picos de densidad de empleo en zonas contiguas y umbrales de concentración. Para estos métodos se utilizó información del INEGI, disponible a nivel nacional en México. Los resultados revelan cuantitativamente los rasgos de conectividad de la red de la ciudad y la fuerza del centro urbano debido a la concentración de empleos y su conectividad. 15. Electroencephalography-based machine learning for cognitive profiling in Parkinson's disease: Preliminary results

Abstract

Background Cognitive symptoms are common in patients with Parkinson's disease. Characterization of a patient's cognitive profile is an essential step toward the identification of predictors of cognitive worsening. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the use of the combination of resting-state EEG and data-mining techniques to build characterization models. Methods Dense EEG data from 118 patients with Parkinson's disease, classified into 5 different groups according to the severity of their cognitive impairments, were considered. Spectral power analysis within 7 frequency bands was performed on the EEG signals. The obtained quantitative EEG features of 100 patients were mined using 2 machine-learning algorithms to build and train characterization models, namely, support vector machines and k-nearest neighbors models. The models were then blindly tested on data from 18 patients. Results The overall classification accuracies were 84% and 88% for the support vector machines and k-nearest algorithms, respectively. The worst classifications were observed for patients from groups with small sample sizes, corresponding to patients with the severe cognitive deficits. Whereas for the remaining groups for whom an accurate diagnosis was required to plan the future healthcare, the classification was very accurate. Conclusion These results suggest that EEG features computed from a daily clinical practice exploration modality in-that it is nonexpensive, available anywhere, and requires minimal cooperation from the patient-can be used as a screening method to identify the severity of cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease. Abstract

Impaired locomotion is a frequent and major source of disability in patients with neurological conditions. Different neuroimaging methods have been used to understand the brain substrates of locomotion in various neurological diseases (mainly in Parkinson's disease) during actual walking, and while resting (using mental imagery of gait, or brain-behavior correlation analyses). These studies, using structural (i.e., MRI) or functional (i.e., functional MRI or functional near infra-red spectroscopy) brain imaging, electrophysiology (i.e., EEG), non-invasive brain stimulation (i.e., transcranial magnetic stimulation, or transcranial direct current stimulation) or molecular imaging methods (i.e., PET, or SPECT) reveal extended brain networks involving both grey and white matters in key cortical (i.e., prefrontal cortex) and subcortical (basal ganglia and cerebellum) regions associated with locomotion. Abstract

Impaired locomotion is a frequent and major source of disability in patients with neurological conditions. Different neuroimaging methods have been used to understand the brain substrates of locomotion in various neurological diseases (mainly in Parkinson's disease) during actual walking, and while resting (using mental imagery of gait, or brain-behavior correlation analyses). These studies, using structural (i.e., MRI) or functional (i.e., functional MRI or functional near infra-red spectroscopy) brain imaging, electrophysiology (i.e., EEG), non-invasive brain stimulation (i.e., transcranial magnetic stimulation, or transcranial direct current stimulation) or molecular imaging methods (i.e., PET, or SPECT) reveal extended brain networks involving both grey and white matters in key cortical (i.e., prefrontal cortex) and subcortical (basal ganglia and cerebellum) regions associated with locomotion. 18. Electroencephalography-based machine learning for cognitive profiling in Parkinson's disease: Preliminary results

Abstract

Background Cognitive symptoms are common in patients with Parkinson's disease. Characterization of a patient's cognitive profile is an essential step toward the identification of predictors of cognitive worsening. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the use of the combination of resting-state EEG and data-mining techniques to build characterization models. Methods Dense EEG data from 118 patients with Parkinson's disease, classified into 5 different groups according to the severity of their cognitive impairments, were considered. Spectral power analysis within 7 frequency bands was performed on the EEG signals. The obtained quantitative EEG features of 100 patients were mined using 2 machine-learning algorithms to build and train characterization models, namely, support vector machines and k-nearest neighbors models. The models were then blindly tested on data from 18 patients. Results The overall classification accuracies were 84% and 88% for the support vector machines and k-nearest algorithms, respectively. The worst classifications were observed for patients from groups with small sample sizes, corresponding to patients with the severe cognitive deficits. Whereas for the remaining groups for whom an accurate diagnosis was required to plan the future healthcare, the classification was very accurate. Conclusion These results suggest that EEG features computed from a daily clinical practice exploration modality in-that it is nonexpensive, available anywhere, and requires minimal cooperation from the patient-can be used as a screening method to identify the severity of cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease. Abstract

Background: The frequency of late-onset Huntington's disease (>59 years) is assumed to be low and the clinical course milder. However, previous literature on late-onset disease is scarce and inconclusive. Objective: Our aim is to study clinical characteristics of late-onset compared to common-onset HD patients in a large cohort of HD patients from the Registry database. Methods: Participants with late- and common-onset (30–50 years)were compared for first clinical symptoms, disease progression, CAG repeat size and family history. Participants with a missing CAG repeat size, a repeat size of ≤35 or a UHDRS motor score of ≤5 were excluded. Results: Of 6007 eligible participants, 687 had late-onset (11.4%) and 3216 (53.5%) common-onset HD. Late-onset (n = 577) had significantly more gait and balance problems as first symptom compared to common-onset (n = 2408) (P <.001). Overall motor and cognitive performance (P <.001) were worse, however only disease motor progression was slower (coefficient, −0.58; SE 0.16; P <.001) compared to the common-onset group. Repeat size was significantly lower in the late-onset (n = 40.8; SD 1.6) compared to common-onset (n = 44.4; SD 2.8) (P <.001). Fewer late-onset patients (n = 451) had a positive family history compared to common-onset (n = 2940) (P <.001). Conclusions: Late-onset patients present more frequently with gait and balance problems as first symptom, and disease progression is not milder compared to common-onset HD patients apart from motor progression. The family history is likely to be negative, which might make diagnosing HD more difficult in this population. However, the balance and gait problems might be helpful in diagnosing HD in elderly patients.

The reduction while "on" medication was slightly smaller (51.4%, 95% CI -41.8 to 91.5; p = 0.075). These effects were paralleled by patients' positive subjective experience on laser shoes' efficacy. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the immediate efficacy of laser shoes in a controlled gait laboratory, and offer a promising intervention with potential to deliver in-home cueing for patients with FOG. Abstract

Background: People with Huntington's disease (HD) have been observed to have lower rates of cancers. Objective: To investigate the relationship between age of onset of HD, CAG repeat length, and cancer diagnosis. Methods: Data were obtained from the European Huntington's disease network REGISTRY study for 6540 subjects. Population cancer incidence was ascertained from the GLOBOCAN database to obtain standardised incidence ratios of cancers in the REGISTRY subjects. Results: 173/6528 HD REGISTRY subjects had had a cancer diagnosis. The age-standardised incidence rate of all cancers in the REGISTRY HD population was 0.26 (CI 0.22-0.30). Individual cancers showed a lower age-standardised incidence rate compared with the control population with prostate and colorectal cancers showing the lowest rates. There was no effect of CAG length on the likelihood of cancer, but a cancer diagnosis within the last year was associated with a greatly increased rate of HD onset (Hazard Ratio 18.94, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Cancer is less common than expected in the HD population, confirming previous reports. However, this does not appear to be related to CAG length in HTT. A recent diagnosis of cancer increases the risk of HD onset at any age, likely due to increased investigation following a cancer diagnosis.

28. Utilisation de TICE dans l'enseignement de la chimie au secondaire 2: mise en oeuvre, apports, contraintes et évaluation

Abstract

Dans ce travail, nous nous intéressons à l’utilisation de Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication dans l’Enseignement (TICE) dans l'enseignement de la chimie au secondaire 2, particulièrement pour des classes de première année maturité. Partant du constat que l’abstraction des phénomènes rencontrés en chimie, due à l'échelle infiniment petite où ils s’y produisent, ainsi que leur modélisation constitue un obstacle majeur et fréquent rencontré par les apprenants. Pour contourner cet obstacle, nous avons choisi d’utiliser deux applications gratuites et téléchargeables sur des smartphones : l’une s’intéressant à la visualisation des éléments chimiques et de leur réactivité, l’autre traitant de la géométrie tridimensionnelle de molécules. Ces deux applications sont basées sur de la réalité augmentée. Cette technologie a pour but de mixer virtuel et réel en superposant l’image captée par l’objectif et un contenu généré par l’application. Deux séquences d’apprentissage sous forme de travaux pratiques (TP) ont été mises en place et évaluées afin de définir les apports didactiques pour les apprenants. Le premier TP intitulé « Tableau périodique des éléments en réalité augmentée » est basé sur l’application Elements 4D et permet aux apprenants d'explorer les éléments chimiques et leur réactivité de manière ludique. E second TP intitulé « Etude de la géométrie des molécules à l’aide d’un smartphone » s’appuie sur l’application Mirage : géométrie des molécules et permet de transformer de simples marqueurs imprimées sur papier en molécules virtuelles en 3D afin d’en étudier la stéréochimie. Un questionnaire fermé a été établi afin de contrôler les apports de ces applications via un smartphone du point de vue des apprenants. L’apport en tant que “lunettes cognitives” pour l’apprenant est mis en évidence par ces résultats. En effet, les apprenants pensent que l’utilisation du smartphone leur permet d’avoir à la fois une meilleure visualisation des phénomènes chimique

Abstract

Background Huntington's disease is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, HTT. Age at onset has been used as a quantitative phenotype in genetic analysis looking for Huntington's disease modifiers, but is hard to define and not always available. Therefore, we aimed to generate a novel measure of disease progression and to identify genetic markers associated with this progression measure. Methods We generated a progression score on the basis of principal component analysis of prospectively acquired longitudinal changes in motor, cognitive, and imaging measures in the 218 indivduals in the TRACK-HD cohort of Huntington's disease gene mutation carriers (data collected 2008–11). We generated a parallel progression score using data from 1773 previously genotyped participants from the European Huntington's Disease Network REGISTRY study of Huntington's disease mutation carriers (data collected 2003–13). We did a genome-wide association analyses in terms of progression for 216 TRACK-HD participants and 1773 REGISTRY participants, then a meta-analysis of these results was undertaken. Findings Longitudinal motor, cognitive, and imaging scores were correlated with each other in TRACK-HD participants, justifying use of a single, cross-domain measure of disease progression in both studies. The TRACK-HD and REGISTRY progression measures were correlated with each other (r=0·674), and with age at onset (TRACK-HD, r=0·315; REGISTRY, r=0·234). The meta-analysis of progression in TRACK-HD and REGISTRY gave a genome-wide significant signal (p=1·12 × 10−10) on chromosome 5 spanning three genes: MSH3, DHFR, and MTRNR2L2. The genes in this locus were associated with progression in TRACK-HD (MSH3 p=2·94 × 10−8DHFR p=8·37 × 10−7MTRNR2L2 p=2·15 × 10−9) and to a lesser extent in REGISTRY (MSH3 p=9·36 × 10−4DHFR p=8·45 × 10−4MTRNR2L2 p=1·20 × 10−3). Contains fulltext : 152331.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), BACKGROUND: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a common and debilitating phenomenon in Parkinson's disease (PD). Wearable accelerometers might help to assess FOG in the research setting. Here, we evaluate whether accelerometry can detect FOG while executing rapid full turns and while walking with rapid short steps (the two most common provoking circumstances for FOG). METHODS: We included 23 PD patients, who all had objective FOG. Participants performed several walking tasks, including walking rapidly with short steps and rapid full turns in both directions with a triaxial linear waist-mounted accelerometer. Two independent experts identified FOG episodes using off-line video-analysis (gold standard). A validated algorithm [ratio between pathological freezing (3-8 Hz)-and normal locomotor frequencies (0.5-3 Hz)] was applied on the accelerometer data to detect FOG episodes. RESULTS: Clinically, FOG was most often observed during full rapid turns (81% of all episodes), followed by walking with short rapid steps (12% of all episodes). During full rapid turns, accelerometry yielded a sensitivity of 78% and specificity of 59%. A sensitivity of 64% and specificity of 69% was observed during walking rapidly with small steps. Combining all tasks rendered a sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 76%. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that FOG can be detected from a single lumbar accelerometer during several walking tasks, including full rapid turns and walking with short steps rapidly, with reasonable sensitivity and specificity. This approach holds promise for possible implementation as complementary objective outcome in a research setting, but more work remains needed to improve the sensitivity and specificity.

Se partió de la hipótesis de que la estructura socioespacial de los asentamientos humanos en la periferia de una ciudad media, como lo es el caso de Culiacán, es el principal factor que genera condiciones de desigualdad o inequidad social en la accesibilidad urbana para los habitantes de dicho sector de la ciudad. En este análisis se devela la importancia que cobran a la accesibilidad, aspectos como la localización, el tiempo empleado para desplazarse, el transporte y el costo del desplazamiento, todos ellos implicaciones de vivir en los asentamientos humanos en la periferia de una ciudad monocéntrica. La metodología que se desarrolla es tanto cualitativa como cuantitativa, tomando la ciudad de Culiacán, México como un caso de estudio con fines instrumentales.
