Medical artificial intelligence (AI) systems have been remarkably successful, even outperforming human performance at certain tasks. There is no doubt that AI is important to improve human health in many ways and will disrupt various medical workflows in the future. Using AI to solve problems in medicine beyond the lab, in routine environments, we need to do more than to just improve the performance of existing AI methods. Robust AI solutions must be able to cope with imprecision, missing and incorrect information, and explain both the result and the process of how it was obtained to a medical expert. Using conceptual knowledge as a guiding model of reality can help to develop more robust, explainable, and less biased machine learning models that can ideally learn from less data. Achieving these goals will require an orchestrated effort that combines three complementary Frontier Research Areas: (1) Complex Networks and their Inference, (2) Graph causal models and counterfactuals, and (3) Verification and Explainability methods. The goal of this paper is to describe these three areas from a unified view and to motivate how information fusion in a comprehensive and integrative manner can not only help bring these three areas together, but also have a transformative role by bridging the gap between research and practical applications in the context of future trustworthy medical AI. This makes it imperative to include ethical and legal aspects as a cross-cutting discipline, because all future solutions must not only be ethically responsible, but also legally compliant.

The field artificial intelligence (AI) has been founded over 65 years ago. Starting with great hopes and ambitious goals the field progressed though various stages of popularity and received recently a revival in the form of deep neural networks. Some problems of AI are that so far neither 'intelligence' nor the goals of AI are formally defined causing confusion when comparing AI to other fields. In this paper, we present a perspective on the desired and current status of AI in relation to machine learning and statistics and clarify common misconceptions and myths. Our discussion is intended to uncurtain the veil of vagueness surrounding AI to see its true countenance.

The implementation of robust, stable, and user-centered data analytics and machine learning models is confronted by numerous challenges in production and manufacturing. Therefore, a systematic approach is required to develop, evaluate, and deploy such models. The data-driven knowledge discovery framework provides an orderly partition of the data-mining processes to ensure the practical implementation of data analytics and machine learning models. However, the practical application of robust industry-specific data-driven knowledge discovery models faces multiple data-- and model-development--related issues. These issues should be carefully addressed by allowing a flexible, customized, and industry-specific knowledge discovery framework; in our case, this takes the form of the cross-industry standard process for data mining (CRISP-DM). This framework is designed to ensure active cooperation between different phases to adequately address data- and model-related issues. In this paper, we review several extensions of CRISP-DM models and various data-robustness-- and model-robustness--related problems in machine learning, which currently lacks proper cooperation between data experts and business experts because of the limitations of data-driven knowledge discovery models.

We are used to the availability of big data generated in nearly all fields of science as a consequence of technological progress. However, the analysis of such data possess vast challenges. One of these relates to the explainability of artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning methods. Currently, many of such methods are non-transparent with respect to their working mechanism and for this reason are called black box models, most notably deep learning methods. However, it has been realized that this constitutes severe problems for a number of fields including the health sciences and criminal justice and arguments have been brought forward in favor of an explainable AI. In this paper, we do not assume the usual perspective presenting explainable AI as it should be, but rather we provide a discussion what explainable AI can be. The difference is that we do not present wishful thinking but reality grounded properties in relation to a scientific theory beyond physics.

Background Using knowledge-based interpretation to analyze omics data can not only obtain essential information regarding various biological processes, but also reflect the current physiological status of cells and tissue. The major challenge to analyze gene expression data, with a large number of genes and small samples, is to extract disease-related information from a massive amount of redundant data and noise. Gene selection, eliminating redundant and irrelevant genes, has been a key step to address this problem. Results The modified method was tested on four benchmark datasets with either two-class phenotypes or multiclass phenotypes, outperforming previous methods, with relatively higher accuracy, true positive rate, false positive rate and reduced runtime. Conclusions This paper proposes an effective feature selection method, combining double RBF-kernels with weighted analysis, to extract feature genes from gene expression data, by exploring its nonlinear mapping ability.

In this paper, we describe {\sc quantitative graph theory} and argue it is a new graph-theoretical branch in network science, however, with significant different features compared to classical graph theory. The main goal of quantitative graph theory is the structural quantification of information contained in complex networks by employing a {\it measurement approach} based on numerical invariants and comparisons. Furthermore, the methods as well as the networks do not need to be deterministic but can be statistic. As such this complements the field of classical graph theory, which is descriptive and deterministic in nature. We provide examples of how quantitative graph theory can be used for novel applications in the context of the overarching concept network science.

In this article, we discuss the problem of establishing relations between information measures assessed for network structures. Two types of entropy based measures namely, the Shannon entropy and its generalization, the R\'{e}nyi entropy have been considered for this study. Our main results involve establishing formal relationship, in the form of implicit inequalities, between these two kinds of measures when defined for graphs. Further, we also state and prove inequalities connecting the classical partition-based graph entropies and the functional-based entropy measures. Im Zuge der web-basierten Kommunikation und in Anbetracht der gigantischen Datenmengen, die im World Wide Web verfügbar sind, erlangt das so genannte Web Mining eine immer stärkere Bedeutung. Ziel des Web Mining ist die Informationsgewinnung und Analyse web-basierter Daten auf der Grundlage von Data Mining-Methoden. Die eigentliche Problemstellung des Data Mining ist die Entdeckung von Mustern und Strukturen in großen Datenbeständen. Web Mining ist also eine Variante des Data Mining; es kann grob in drei Bereiche unterteilt werden: Web Structure Mining, Web Content Mining und Web Usage Mining. Die zentrale Problemstellung des Web Structure Mining, die in dieser Arbeit besonders im Vordergrund steht, ist die Erforschung und Untersuchung struktureller Eigenschaften web-basierter Dokumente. Das Web wird in dieser Arbeit wie üblich als Hypertext aufgefasst. In der Anfangsphase der Hypertextforschung wurden graphbasierte Indizes zur Messung struktureller Ausprägungen und Strukturvergleichen von Hypertexten verwendet. Diese sind jedoch im Hinblick auf die ähnlichkeitsbasierte Gruppierung graphbasierter Hypertextstrukturen unzureichend. Daher konzentriert sich die vorliegende Arbeit auf die Entwicklung neuer graphentheoretischer und ähnlichkeitsbasierter Analysemethoden. Ähnlichkeitsbasierte Analysemethoden, die auf graphentheoretischen Modellen beruhen, können nur dann sinnvoll im Hypertextumfeld eingesetzt werden, wenn sie aussagekräftige und effiziente strukturelle Vergleiche graphbasierter Hypertexte ermöglichen.
