Background: Exposures to DNA-damaging drugs and ionizing radiations increase risks of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Methods: 9028 recipients of hematopoietic cell autotransplants (1995-2010) for Hodgkin lymphoma (HL; n=916), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL; n=3546) and plasma cell myeloma (PCM; n=4566), reported to the CIBMTR, were analyzed for risk of subsequent AML or MDS. Results: 335 MDS/ AML cases were diagnosed posttransplant (3.7%). Variables associated with an increased risk for AML or MDS in multivariate analyses were: (1) conditioning with total body radiation versus chemotherapy alone for HL (HR=4.0; 95% confidence interval [1.4, 11.6]) and NHL (HR=2.5 [1.1, 2.5]); (2) >= 3 versus 1 line of chemotherapy for NHL (HR=1.9 [1.3, 2.8]); and (3) subjects with NHL transplanted in 2005-2010 versus 1995-1999 (HR=2.1 [1.5, 3.1]). Using Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data, we found risks for AML/ MDS in HL, NHL and PCM to be 5-10 times the background rate. In contrast, relative risks were 10-50 for AML and approximately 100 for MDS in the autotransplant cohort. Conclusions: There are substantial risks of AML and MDS after autotransplants for HL, NHL and PCM.

The goal of the GALAH survey is to reconstruct the mass assembly history of the Milky Way through a detailed chemical abundance study of one million stars. The spectrograph is based at the AAT and is fed by the existing 2dF robotic fiber positioning system. The spectrograph uses volume phase holographic gratings to achieve a spectral resolving power of 28,000 in standard mode and also provides a high-resolution mode ranging between 40,000 and 50,000 using a slit mask. The GALAH survey requires an SNR greater than 100 for a star brightness of V ?= 14 in an exposure time of one hour. The total spectral coverage of the four channels is about 100 nm between 370 and 1000 nm for up to 392 simultaneous targets within the 2-degree field of view. HERMES has been commissioned over three runs, during bright time in October, November, and December 2013, in parallel with the beginning of the GALAH pilot survey, which started in November 2013. The use of reverse time chaos allows the realization of hardware chaotic systems that can operate at speeds equivalent to existing state of the art while requiring significantly less complex circuitry. Matched filter decoding is possible for the reverse time system since it exhibits a closed form solution formed partially by a linear basis pulse. Coefficients have been calculated and are used to realize the matched filter digitally as a finite impulse response filter. Numerical simulations confirm that this correctly implements a matched filter that can be used for detection of the chaotic signal. In addition, the direct form of the filter has been implemented in hardware description language and demonstrates performance in agreement with numerical results., Comment: 9 pages, 17 figures

The GALAH survey requires a SNR greater than 100 for a star brightness of V=14. The total spectral coverage of the four channels is about 100nm between 370 and 1000nm for up to 392 simultaneous targets within the 2 degree field of view. Hermes has been commissioned over 3 runs, during bright time in October, November and December 2013, in parallel with the beginning of the GALAH Pilot survey starting in November 2013. In this paper we present the first-light results from the commissioning run and the beginning of the GALAH Survey, including performance results such as throughput and resolution, as well as instrument reliability. This dissertation explores the cultural and intellectual factors in the remaking of US-Japan relations which transformed as the two countries transitioned from enemies to allies after 1945. Diverging from the traditional approaches of diplomatic and political history that, focusing on state actors, describe policymaking processes, I comparatively study public discourses in 1940s-early 1950s America and Japan where various groups and actors - politicians, bureaucrats, journalists, scholars, and intellectuals - participated and created. Both peoples shared a similar discourse concerning modernization and, indeed, developed parallel ideas about modern Japanese history and the causes of Japanese militarism, the postwar democratization of Japan, and the making of a postwar Asian peace. They believed in the European progressive view of history, variously interpreted, and judged Japan to be "underdeveloped," compared with the "advanced West," having become an unlawful aggressor nation in the 1930s. Such views of a "failed" modernity and subsequent war rationalized Allied occupation and democratization reforms in post-surrender Japan. The more influenced by Marxian theories, the more critical they were of Japan's incomplete modernization, and the more enthusiastic for Allied - or American - intervention in postwar reforms. American and Japanese discourses on the reform of Japan's political organization, namely constitutional revision, show similar reformist plans from reconstruction of the constitutional monarchy to republican options. Those adopting Marxist analyses found the root cause of Japan's undemocratic and aggressive nature in the emperor system called for its elimination; those who did not believe that democratization required the overthrow of monarchy suggested reforming Japan's imperial institution to make democratic government function better. Problems of constructing a sediment budget for an inlet is often a challenge due to constraints on data collection quality of data, and assumptions one is willing to consider. Existing literature does not provide a systematic foundation for equations considered and often engineers and geologists typically do not properly consider the mathematical constraints placed on the problem of sediment budget construction. The present technical note presents a simple methodology for assessing sediment budget, i.e. what is possible, and what is not possible via a matrix equation system and linear algebra. It is hoped that engineers and geologists will not impose unrealistic expectations on the sediment budget system via using such an approach. There is no clear consensus on a valid method for seizure prediction despite over 30 years of research. The large body of work from the field of seizure prediction highlights the commitment and value in solving this important problem. The research in this thesis tackles the problem of anticipating seizures by developing methods to extract more information from brain signals, than existing seizure prediction methods considered in the literature. The phase was estimated using a new technique developed in this thesis, the Circular Phase Transform (CPT). The CPT is a non-parametric method that enables estimation of the instantaneous phase in semi-broadband frequency modulated signals with an arbitrary basis. Furthermore, the CPT explicitly accounts for signal noise, making the method superior to other techniques for estimating the instantaneous phase of iEEG signals. The results from a small group of patients indicate that it is possible to track excitability using the proposed new methods, and that excitability measurably increases prior to some seizures. However, although excitability is measured from responses to direct brain stimulation, it is estimated using features of the iEEG that are an abstraction of the underlying physical process. Furthermore, the vast array of possible features makes the framework inherently difficult to optimise. This motivated the development of a model-based framework for estimating parameters that have physiological meaning from electrophysiological data. The Wilson and Cowan, or Amari style, neural field equations were used to form a parametric model, where the parameters are estimated from electrophysiological data. To illustrate the estimation framework, data was generated using the neural field equations incorporating modelled sensors. This enabled a comparison between the estimated and true parameters. Barrier islands that overlie a compressible substrate, such as islands in deltaic environments or those that overlay mud or peat deposits, load and consolidate the underlying subsurface. Through time, the elevation and aerial extent of these islands are reduced, making them more susceptible to future inundation and overwash. Sand washed over the island and onto back-barrier marsh or into the bay or estuary begins the consolidation process on a previously non-loaded substrate, with time-dependent consolidation as a function of the magnitude of the load, duration of load, and characteristics of the substrate. The result is an increase in the overwash, migration, breaching, and segmentation of these islands. This research developed a two-dimensional (cross-shore) numerical model for evolution of a sandy barrier island that spans durations of years to decades as a function of erosion, runup, overwash, migration, and time-dependent consolidation of the underlying substrate as a function of loading by the island. The model was tested with field data and then applied to evaluate the effects of a compressible substrate on long-term barrier island evolution. Results illustrate that barrier islands overlying a compressible substrate are more likely to have reduced dune elevation due to consolidation, incur overall volumetric adjustment of the profile to fill in compressed regions outside the immediate footprint of the island, and experience increased overwash and migration when the dune reaches a critical elevation with respect to the prevalent storm conditions., Marine Geology, v271 p1-16, 2010.

The recently concluded 8-year Robotics Collaborative Technology Alliance (RCTA) pursued technologies to support tactical behaviors of unmanned ground systems as a way to illustrate advances in the research program thrust areas of perception, intelligent control, and Soldier-machine interface. In April 2009, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory conducted an experiment at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA, to measure the capability of current autonomous navigation planning algorithms to solve complex terrain challenges previously not achievable under the local planning approach used in Demo III, the forerunner program and baseline for the RCTA. The principal focus was to evaluate the relative performance of three planning algorithms representing the span of research from Demo III to the closing months of the RCTA., The original document contains color images. During 4-14 February 2008, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and General Dynamics Robotic Systems conducted an unmanned systems tactical behaviors technology assessment at three training areas of Ft. Indiantown Gap, PA. The purpose of the assessment was to examine the ability to use sensed information to locally orient an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) in order to obtain line of sight for an onboard reconnaissance surveillance target acquisition system to scan a sufficient portion of a named area of interest (NAI) and the impact of advances in deliberative layer planning technologies to enhance autonomous mobility in a relevant environment. The assessment was an opportunity to evaluate the performance of the technologies in a relevant environment and to provide useful feedback to the engineers for continued development. The results show that the algorithms successfully enabled the UGV to autonomously maneuver to a position that provided sufficient coverage of an NAI and that the interplay of path-planning algorithms at multiple levels has a significant impact on the ability of a UGV to maneuver in a relevant environment., The original document contains color images.

Hierarchical approaches to autonomous navigation usually divide path planning in two levels: local and global navigation. While these two approaches are complementary and can perform very well, they introduce the additional challenge of integrating them in a way that maximizes their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses. In this paper, we evaluate three different approaches to integrating global and local navigation: route-based navigation, route-based navigation with replanning, and combined navigation using the Field Cost Interface (FCI)., See also ADM002187. The ethylamino side chain of serotonin can assume many conformations due to unrestricted rotation about its two dihedral angles. The synthesis of rigid analogs of serotonin with rotational restriction of the side chain could lead to increased activity and/or selectivity at serotonin receptors. Derivatives 8, 9 and 10 substituted at the 4-position of indole were sought as well as the bicyclo derivatives 11, 12 and 13 substituted at the 3-position. The bicyclo derivative 11 was prepared by the direct condensation of the ketone precursor (quinuclidinone) with 5-methoxyindole under basic conditions. The reaction is thought to proceed through an intermediate similar to structure 32. This procedure results in the formation of the olefin which can then be reduced to the desired compound. The derivatives substituted at the 4-position were prepared via halogen-metal exchange reactions. Beginning with the 4-bromo derivative of indole and the appropriate piperidone derivative, compounds 37, 38 and 39 were generated. Birch reduction of the intermediate tertiary alcohol was necessary to derive the final compounds. Syntheses of 12 and 13 also utilized the halogen-metal exchange reaction. Direct condensation under basic conditions, as was utilized in the synthesis of 11, was unsuccessful, possibly due to the formation of a double bond within a 5-membered ring, as seen in the [2.2.1] bicyclo derivative. Thus, the halogen-metal exchange reaction of the 3-bromo, derivative of indole with the bicyclo derivative 22 and 26 yielded the tertiary alcohols 40 and 41 respectively. Molecular modeling of the bicyclo compounds showed a 4- to 6-fold increase in the energy required to overcome the rotational barrier of the substituents about the indole nucleus as compared with the same dihedral angle of serotonin. This as well as the conformational restriction could increase selectivity at serotonin receptors.

This dissertation explores the ways that specific constructions of "masculinity" and related "gendered" discourses of political power helped shape the foreign policy decisions of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. I argue that both prescriptive and proscriptive aspects of an elite "ideology of masculinity" played an important role in Kennedy administration innovations like counterinsurgency programs or the Peace Corps. The U.S. intervention in Vietnam under both Presidents was shaped in significant ways by a decision-making process embedded in a gendered discourse that equated negotiation with "appeasement," "softness," feminized weakness, and the collapse of boundaries; the use of force was construed as "tough-minded," a pragmatic "hardness" to buttress vital imperial and domestic political boundaries. This dissertation places analytical and interpretive emphasis on the heretofore largely unexamined role of gender and culture in American foreign policy of the Cold War. The study has two aspects. The first focuses on the creation of elite masculine "identity-narratives"; I examine the patterns of masculine socialization common to Kennedy and the elite "establishment" figures he recruited to staff his national security bureaucracy. I discuss patterns of experience in sex-segregated educational, fraternal, and military institutions, and the ritual ordeals employed by those institutions to create overlapping brotherhoods of privilege and power. I examine their experience of the gendered and sexualized political discourse of the nineteen-fifties, and the lessons they learned from the government purges which equated "subversion" and "sex perversion" when targeting victims. The second aspect of the study examines the "real world" consequences of the prescriptive and proscriptive ideology of masculinity shared by the national security staff of Kennedy and Johnson. Commonly accepted scenarios of Warsaw Pact warfare against NATO assume that over half of initial Pact offensive forces would consist of Czechoslovak, East German, and Polish units. These Northern Tier military institutions and their roles domestically and within the Warsaw Pact are examined in this study. The officer corps of all three military establishments are outwardly committed to a Soviet-defined 'lightning war' strategy. This strategy may constitute the principal Soviet lever for ensuring Northern Tier participation in a Warsaw Pact offensive, but how reliably the conscript armies would in fact fulfill that intended roll is another question. In any case, Pact preparations for 'coalition warfare' imply weaknesses and vulnerabilities that deserve careful attention in light of the distinctive individual characteristics of the respective Northern Tier military establishments. A limited area hydrographic survey was conducted in shallow water, using a launch equipped to sound concurrently with three beam widths, in order to evaluate the benefits of dual beam echo sounders. The narrow beam echo sounder has become commonplace in hydrographic surveying. This has reduced the bottom area insonified by the echo sounder's beam, which decreases the probability of detecting navigational hazards. The dual beam echo sounder, equipped with a narrow and wide beam, sounding concurrently, represents a relatively inexpensive means to increase the detection capabilities, while preserving the narrow beam operation. The wide beams detected significant peaks that were absent on the narrow beam trace. The wider hyperbolic returns of the wide beams served to emphasize the narrow beam returns over features with little horizontal extent. The narrow versus wide beam depth differences over feature peaks were found useful in isolating the peak's apex. (Author)

A consultant's review of the Los Angeles-Long Beach Harbors Study was performed by Professor Robert O. Reid of Texas A and M University, Professor Robert G. Dean of the University of Delaware, and Professor Leon E. Borgman of the University of Wyoming. The review primarily covers the acquisition and analyses of prototype wave and ship motion data. Comments and suggestions are offered regarding improvements and methods of attack for the present and future studies of this type. (Author)

The cross-shore distribution of longshore sediment transport is investigated through the distribution of sediment impounded against a shore-perpendicular barrier over short-term intervals in field and laboratory environments. For each field experiment, a low-profile groyne was deployed across a natural beach in less than 8 hr and profiles near the groyne were repeatedly surveyed for 8 to 20 hr thereafter. For each laboratory experiment, a low-profile barrier was installed across a pre-equilibrated fine sand model beach, and profile changes near the barrier were measured after 5 to 40 minutes of regular, obliquely incident, unidirectional wave action. Breaking wave angle and longshore current and wave height across the surf zone were also measured. The effects of crossshore transport and tidal fluctuation were addressed in the survey data, and the effectiveness of the barriers as impoundment agents is discussed. Local downdrift profile changes were found to be poor indicators of the local updrift impoundment. In general, the longshore transport profiles were found to be bimodal with peaks just landward of the breakpoint and near the shoreline. The relative significance of the longshore transport shifted from the near-breakpoint peak to the near-shoreline peak as the wave condition varied from spilling to collapsing breakers. A documented (FORTRAN IV) computer program is discussed as originally written for the CERC Longshore Sand Transport Research Program to analyze wave data collected at Channel Islands Harbor, California. The program performs the basic analysis of two wave gage pressure records necessary to compute wave direction and wave energy at a given frequency and computes the longshore energy flux used in sand transport for the entire energy spectrum of the wave record. This program uses linear wave theory for the wave transformation process and includes the assumption of straight and parallel bottom contours necessary for application of Snell's law of refraction. The necessary steps in an analysis of wave data and sample outputs for some wave records from the Channel Islands wave gage pressure sensor pair are given. The program presently accepts data in the standard CERC magnetic-tape format where record lengths consist of 4,100 values. (Author)

An implicit finite-difference, n-line numerical model is developed to predict bathymetric changes in the vicinity of coastal structures. The wave field transformation includes refraction, shoaling, and diffraction. The model is capable of simulating one or more shore-perpendicular structures, movement of offshore disposal mounds, and beach fill evolution. The structure length and location, sediment properties, equilibrium beach profile, etc., are user-specified along with the wave climate. (Author)
