Abstract: This White Paper presents an overview of the current status and future perspective of QCD research, based on the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the 2022 Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting. We present the progress made in the last decade toward a deep understanding of both the fundamental structure of the sub-atomic matter of nucleon and nucleus in cold QCD, and the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions. We identify key questions of QCD research and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions in the near future, hence defining priorities of our research over the coming decades.

Abstract: This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. To extract electroproduction multipoles encoding this information, the J\"ulich-Bonn-Washington (JBW) analysis framework is extended to the analysis of differential cross sections in $K\Lambda$ electroproduction. This update enlarges the scope of previous coupled-channel analyses of pions and eta mesons, with photoproduction reactions as boundary condition in all analyzed electroproduction reactions. Polarization observables are predicted and compared to recent CLAS data. The comparison shows the relevance of these data to pin down baryon properties., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

Abstract: This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Abstract: This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. Abstract: This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Abstract: The topical workshop {\it Strong QCD from Hadron Structure Experiments} took place at Jefferson Lab from Nov. 6-9, 2019. Impressive progress in relating hadron structure observables to the strong QCD mechanisms has been achieved from the {\it ab initio} QCD description of hadron structure in a diverse array of methods in order to expose emergent phenomena via quasi-particle formation. The wealth of experimental data and the advances in hadron structure theory make it possible to gain insight into strong interaction dynamics in the regime of large quark-gluon coupling (the strong QCD regime), which will address the most challenging problems of the Standard Model on the nature of the dominant part of hadron mass, quark-gluon confinement, and the emergence of the ground and excited state hadrons, as well as atomic nuclei, from QCD. This workshop aimed to develop plans and to facilitate the future synergistic efforts between experimentalists, phenomenologists, and theorists working on studies of hadron spectroscopy and structure with the goal to connect the properties of hadrons and atomic nuclei available from data to the strong QCD dynamics underlying their emergence from QCD. These results pave the way for a future breakthrough extension in the studies of QCD with an Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S., Comment: Summary and outlook of the "Strong QCD from Hadron Structure Experiment" topical Workshop at Jefferson Lab, November 4-8, 2019, Newport News, VA, USA, 65 pages, 57 figures

Abstract: In der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts hat sich im Zuge des Gletscherrückzugs eine alpine Aue im Triftgebiet gebildet. Zu Beginn prägten dynamische Geschiebeumlagerungsprozesse die Flusslandschaft am Triftwasser und führten zu einer typischen Sukzession einer alpinen Aue. Mit dem weiteren Rückzug des Triftgletschers hat sich Anfang dieses Jahrhunderts der natürliche Triftsee gebildet, der einen Geschiebeeintrag in die darunterliegende Triftaue praktisch vollständig unterbindet. Damit wird die Geschiebedynamik im Triftwasser auf ein absolutes Minimum reduziert. Daher ist es dem Gewässer so gut wie nicht mehr möglich, seinen Verlauf im Zuge von Hochwasserereignissen zu verändern und neue morphologische Strukturen zu bilden. Aufgrund der topografischen Verhältnisse (breiter Kessel) können die natürlicherweise auftretenden Hochwasserereignisse nicht mehr genug Kraft entwickeln, um grossflächige Vegetationsbestände zu entwurzeln. Damit verbunden ist eine rasche Ausbreitung an Grünerlenbeständen, die mittelfristig die heutige Triftaue fast vollständig besiedeln werden. Im Rahmen des Triftprojekts (Vergrösserung des Triftsees mit neuem Kraftwerk auf Höhe der bestehenden Triftfassung) wurden u.a. detaillierte Studien zum Ist-Zustand sowie zur Entwicklung der Triftaue mit und ohne Projekt durchgeführt. Basierend auf diesen Untersuchungen wurden für die Realisierung des Projekts neben dem Restwasserregime zusätzlich auch Hochwasserdotierungen festgelegt.

14. Three-body unitarity versus finite-volume $\pi^+\pi^+\pi^+$ spectrum from lattice QCD

Abstract: Strong three-body interactions above threshold govern the dynamics of many exotics and conventional excited mesons and baryons. Three-body finite-volume energies calculated from lattice QCD promise an ab-initio understanding of these systems. We calculate the three-$\pi^+$ spectrum unraveling the three-body dynamics that is tightly intertwined with the $S$-matrix principle of three-body unitarity and compare it with recent lattice QCD results. Abstract: The J\"ulich-Bonn coupled-channel framework is extended to $K^+\Lambda$ photoproduction. The spectrum of nucleon and $\Delta$ resonances is extracted from simultaneous fits to several pion-induced reactions in addition to pion, eta and $K^+\Lambda$ photoproduction off the proton. More than 40,000 data points up to a center-of-mass energy of E$\sim$2.3 GeV including recently measured double-polarization observables are analyzed. The influence of the $\gamma p\to K^+\Lambda$ channel on the extracted resonance parameters and the appearance of states not seen in other channels is investigated. Solar variability has been hypothesized to be a major driver of North Atlantic millennial-scale climate variations through the Holocene along with orbitally induced insolation change. However, another important climate driver, volcanic forcing has generally been underestimated prior to the past 2,500 years partly owing to the lack of proper proxy temperature records. Here, we reconstruct seasonally unbiased and physically constrained Greenland Summit temperatures over the Holocene using argon and nitrogen isotopes within trapped air in a Greenland ice core (GISP2). We show that a series of volcanic eruptions through the Holocene played an important role in driving centennial to millennial-scale temperature changes in Greenland. The reconstructed Greenland temperature exhibits significant millennial correlations with K+ and Na+ ions in the GISP2 ice core (proxies for atmospheric circulation patterns), and δ18O of Oman and Chinese Dongge cave stalagmites (proxies for monsoon activity), indicating that the reconstructed temperature contains hemispheric signals. Climate model simulations forced with the volcanic forcing further suggest that a series of large volcanic eruptions induced hemispheric-wide centennial to millennial-scale variability through ocean/sea-ice feedbacks. Therefore, we conclude that volcanic activity played a critical role in driving centennial to millennial-scale Holocene temperature variability in Greenland and likely beyond.

This crossroads offers a unique opportunity to provide scientifically sound information on how to expand future electricity generation capacities in ways that are sensitive to the myriad of development challenges while avoiding a lock-in of the power sector in unsustainable pathways. Taken up by policymakers, project developers, civil society organization and researchers, the database of this document is furthermore envisioned to help in paving the way towards an energy system that is not only reliable, affordable and accessible but also socially robust and that contributes to sustainable development in Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia.

Abstract: The governments of Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia currently stand at a crossroads for new electricity pathways. While the deployment of renewable energies is receiving policy support across the region, fossil fuels—especially coal and natural gas—as well as nuclear power are prominent alternatives in the countries’ development plans. This crossroads offers a unique opportunity to provide scientifically sound information on how to expand future electricity generation capacities in ways that are sensitive to the myriad of development challenges while avoiding a lock-in of the power sector in unsustainable pathways. As electricity systems are not developed in isolation from society, but in a continuous interaction with social, economic, environmental, and political dimensions, this publication aims to develop a comprehensive database for the purpose of evaluating the complex trade-offs between different electricity generation technologies and sustainable development at the national and local level in Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia. 47. Two-flavor Simulations of the $\rho(770)$ and the Role of the $K\bar K$ Channel

Abstract: The $\rho (770)$ meson is the most extensively studied resonance in lattice QCD simulations in two ($N_f=2$) and three ($N_f=2+1$) flavor formulations. We analyze $N_f=2$ lattice scattering data using unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory, allowing not only for the extrapolation in mass but also in flavor, $N_f=2\to N_f=2+1$. The flavor extrapolation requires information from a global fit to $\pi\pi$ and $\pi K$ phase shifts from experiment. While the chiral extrapolation of $N_f=2$ lattice data leads to masses of the $\rho(770)$ meson far below the experimental one, we find that the missing $K\bar{K}$ channel is able to explain this discrepancy., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, as accepted by PRL

48. Model Selection for Pion Photoproduction

Abstract: Partial-wave analysis of meson and photon-induced reactions is needed to enable the comparison of many theoretical approaches to data. In both energy-dependent and independent parametrizations of partial waves, the selection of the model amplitude is crucial. Principles of the $S$-matrix are implemented to different degree in different approaches, but a many times overlooked aspect concerns the selection of undetermined coefficients and functional forms for fitting, leading to a minimal yet sufficient parametrization. We present an analysis of low-energy neutral pion photoproduction using the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) in combination with criteria from information theory and $K$-fold cross validation. These methods are not yet widely known in the analysis of excited hadrons but will become relevant in the era of precision spectroscopy. The principle is first illustrated with synthetic data, then, its feasibility for real data is demonstrated by analyzing the latest available measurements of differential cross sections ($d\sigma/d\Omega$), photon-beam asymmetries ($\Sigma$), and target asymmetry differential cross sections ($d\sigma_T/d\Omega$) in the low energy regime., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, after acceptance

49. Determination of the compositeness of resonances from decays: the case of the $B^0_s\to J/\psi f_1(1285)$

Abstract: We develop a method to measure the amount of compositeness of a resonance, mostly made as a bound state of two hadrons, by simultaneously measuring the rate of production of the resonance and the mass distribution of the two hadrons close to threshold. By using different methods of analysis we conclude that the method allows one to extract the value of 1-Z with about $0.1$ of uncertainty. The method is applied to the case of the $\bar B^0_s \to J/\psi f_1(1285)$ decay, by looking at the resonance production and the mass distribution of $K \bar K^*$., Comment: 9 figures
