Salicylate and benzoate sunscreen agents have been encapsulated by the green, fast and robust ultrasound technique in tannin microcapsules (TMCs). The generated TMCs, obtained without use of cross linking agents, were fully characterised, including encapsulation efficiencies with respect to the encapsulated actives. Release kinetics of TMCs have been studied mimicking skin conditions. Body cream base samples containing specific concentrations of microcapsules filled with sunscreen actives were prepared and showed synergistic effects in terms of UV-protection abilities generated by the interplay between sunscreen actives and natural tannin polyphenols. The synergistic effect exerted by the tannin and the controlled active release allows to reduce the amount of synthetic sunscreens needed, and does thus contribute to the development of more sustainable and environmentally benign UV-protection systems.

Background: Tannins have demonstrated antibacterial and antibiofilm activity, but there are still unknown aspects on how the chemical properties of tannins affect their biological properties. We are interested in understanding how to modulate the antibiofilm activity of tannins and in delineating the relationship between chemical determinants and antibiofilm activity. Materials and methods: The effect of five different naturally acquired tannins and their chemical derivatives on biofilm formation and planktonic growth of Salmonella Typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was determined in the Calgary biofilm device. Results: Most of the unmodified tannins exhibited specific antibiofilm activity against the assayed bacteria. The chemical modifications were found to alter the antibiofilm activity level and spectrum of the tannins. A positive charge introduced by derivatization with higher amounts of ammonium groups shifted the anti-biofilm spectrum toward Gram-negative bacteria, and derivatization with lower amounts of ammonium groups and acidifying derivatization shifted the spectrum toward Gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, the quantity of phenolic OH-groups per molecule was found to have a weak impact on the anti-biofilm activity of the tannins. Conclusion: We were able to modulate the antibiofilm activity of several tannins by specific chemical modifications, providing a first approach for fine tuning of their activity and antibacterial spectrum.

In recent years, industries are increasingly more concerned about sustainability and climate change. This and the depletion of natural resources turned waste biomasses into an attractive and sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials. Lignin is one of the three main components of lignocellulosic biomass and it is the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on the planet. However, its intrinsic recalcitrance and highly heterogeneous nature hinder its conversion into high value-added products. Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) have attracted particular attention since their size and higher surface area could help on the promotion of lignin valorisation. Efforts are made to improve their stability at high pH values (>9) and in organic solvents, and to increase compatibility with polymer matrixes. In this study we present a novel method to obtain surface functionalized LNPs by taking advantage of their self-assembly mechanisms. Firstly, two fractions of Kraft lignin are obtained by organic solvent treatment. The low molecular weight phenolic rich soluble fraction is then reacted with epichlorohydrin to produce glycidyl derivatives. LNPs are then made via a two-step anti-solvent procedure, which allows obtaining particles constituted by a high molecular weight insoluble fraction core and an epoxidized soluble fraction shell. Epoxy groups present on the outer shell of the particles can be then exploited in two different manners. One is the thermal treatment of the suspension which allows tailored cross-linking reactions: intraparticle that helps increase stability in harsh conditions (pH and solvent) and/or interparticle to produce nanoclusters. The second one is to use epoxy groups as a platform for further functionalization through well-known amine-epoxy reactions.

Both condensed and hydrolysable tannins represent versatile natural polyphenolic structures exhibiting a broad range of activities that could be exploited in various fields including nutraceutics, cosmesis, consumer care, household and pharmaceutical applications. Various tannins are commercially available nowadays for use in such application fields. We have analysed a representative selection of commercially available condensed and hydrolysable tannins for structural features and purity. Novel valorization routes for tannins were opened by the development of a simple, straightforward, robust, and flexible approach to the selective functionalization of condensed and hydrolyzable tannins. Irrespective of the different degrees of polymerization, different commercial tannins were efficiently functionalized by the generation of an ether linkage bound to a short linker carrying the desired functional group. Functionalizations could be realized at varying degrees of technical loadings, i.e., amounts of introduced tannin-alien functionalities per number of phenolic hydroxyl groups. The same strategy was found suitable for the synthesis of polyethylene glycol-functionalized tannin copolymers. Condensed tannins functionalized with carboxylic acid moieties could be converted into a tannin-oligopeptide hybrid.

Microcapsules of sulfited Acacia mearnsii tannin (AmST-MCs) were generated for the first time via the sonochemical method. Their stability profile was assessed and set in the general context of tannin microcapsules (TMCs) generated under the same experimental conditions. The analytical data gathered in this work indicate an excellent stability of TMCs over time as well as under high temperature and pressure, which is a major milestone toward the meaningful applications of TMCs in industrial, pharmaceutical, and biomedical applications in which sterilization of TMCs might be a prerequisite. Active release is shown to be efficiently triggered by varying pH and/or salinity, with different profiles for TMCs from sulfited and nonsulfited species. Surfactants also affect the stability of TMCs significantly, with effects eventually amplifiable by pH and the inherent kosmotropic and chaotropic characteristics of salt components in solutions.

Notable progress has been made recently regarding the exploitation of lignin in the production of carbon fibres. Electrospinning is one of the methods for producing the lignin-based fibres throughout the literature. Based on initial studies as well as general analogies, some seminal works have been published regarding the nature of the lignins that are more suitable than others for electrospinning applications. More recently, our group, as well as others, have realised lignin-based fibres using tailored lignin preparations. Based on structural insights, and hypothesising some fundamental mechanistic aspects in fibre formation based on analogies to other lignin valorisations that are based on supramolecular assembly phenomena, we pushed formation of electrospun fibrous matrices now to start from smallest lignin oligomers, as well as to start from even monomeric or dimeric tannins. After exploiting fundamental aspects of fibre generation, we will also present additional novel polyphenol-containing fibrous mats based on various blended tannin-preparations suitable for value-added applications in the pharmaceutical sector.

Eucalyptus nitens wood samples were subjected to consecutive stages of hydrothermal processing for hemicellulose solubilization and delignification with an ionic liquid, i.e., either 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate or triethylammonium hydrogen sulfate. Delignification experiments were carried out a 170 °C for 10–50 min. The solid phases from treatments, i.e., cellulose-enriched solids, were recovered by centrifugation, and lignin was separated from the ionic liquid by water precipitation. The best delignification conditions were identified on the basis of the results determined for delignification percentage, lignin recovery yield, and cellulose recovery in solid phase. The lignins obtained under selected conditions were characterized in deep by 31P-NMR, 13C-NMR, HSQC, and gel permeation chromatography. The major structural features of the lignins were discussed in comparison with the results determined for a model Ionosolv lignin.

Recently reported acetosolv soft- and hardwood lignins as well as ionosolv soft- and hardwood lignins were transformed into monomeric aromatic compounds using either a vanadate or a molybdate-based catalyst system. Monomers were generated with remarkable, catalyst-dependent selectivity and high depolymerisation yields via oxidative exo- and endo-depolymerisation processes. Using the vanadate-hydrogen peroxide system on acetosolv pine lignin, vanillin and isovanillin were produced as main products with depolymerisation yields of 31%. Using the molybdate system on acetosolv and ionosolv lignin, vanillic acid was the practically exclusive product, with depolymerisation yields of up to 72%. Similar selectivities, albeit with lower depolymerisation yields of around 50% under standardised conditions, were obtained for eucalyptus acetosolv lignin, producing vanillin and syringaldehyde or vanillic acid as products, by using the vanadate- or the molybdate-based systems respectively.

Thymol and the corresponding brominated derivatives constitute important biological active molecules as antibacterial, antioxidant, antifungal, and antiparasitic agents. However, their application is often limited, because their pronounced fragrance, their poor solubility in water, and their high volatility. The encapsulation of different thymol derivatives into biocompatible lignin-microcapsules is presented as a synergy-delivering remedy. The adoption of lignosulfonate as an encapsulating material possessing relevant antioxidant activity, as well as general biocompatibility allows for the development of new materials that are suitable for the application in various fields, especially cosmesis. To this purpose, lignin microcapsules containing thymol, 4-bromothymol, 2,4-dibromothymol, and the corresponding O-methylated derivatives have been efficiently prepared through a sustainable ultrasonication procedure. Actives could be efficiently encapsulated with efficiencies of up to 50%. To evaluate the applicability of such systems for topical purposes, controlled release experiments have been performed in acetate buffer at pH 5.4, to simulate skin pH: all of the capsules show a slow release of actives, which is strongly determined by their inherent lipophilicity.

The organosolv lignins were first analysed for impurities, and structural features were determined using the default set of gel permeation chromatography, FT-IR spectroscopy, quantitative 31P NMR spectroscopy and semi-quantitative 1H-13C HSQC analysis. Pyrolysis-, O2-and CO2-reactivity of the organosolv lignins were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and volatile formation in various heating cycles was mapped by head-space GC-MS analysis. Revealed reactivities were correlated to the presence of identified impurities and structural features typical for the organosolv lignins. Data suggest that thermogravimetric analysis can eventually be used to delineate a lignin character when basic information regarding its isolation method is available.

Lignins were fractionated in a segmented continuous flow fractionation (SCFF) approach using isocratic or gradient elution profiles of different solvent systems at various flow rates and temperatures against adjustable pressure regimes. Superior control of parameters such as temperature and pressure in combination with the possibility of freely combinable solvent gradients allowed facile fractionation and generation of industrially interesting fractions differing in molecular weight properties and/or in physicochemical properties in a process that could be fully remotely controlled for automation and performance. Scale-up of the process was possible in linear and parallel mode. Analyses of the realised fractions by standardised gel permeation chromatography and 31P NMR spectroscopy protocols showed that the SCFF of lignins delivered fractions that could be similar to conventional batch fractions, as well as novel/altered fractions available by applying overheated solvents in pressurised systems.

Two different organosolv lignins (OSLs), that is, wheat straw and corn stover OSLs, were chemically and enzymatically functionalized. Functional groups were attached via the formation of stable ether bonds exploiting the reactivity of free phenolic OH groups along the lignin backbone. The functional groups introduced a range from compact charged and chargeable building blocks for the generation of surface-active lignins to oligomeric and polymeric species used in lignin block-copolymer productions. Combination of selected functions led to novel charged or chargeable polymeric lignin-based materials. Products could be realized with different degrees of technical loadings in terms of introduced functional groups.

Softwood kraft lignin SKL was fractionated using aprotic acetone and protic methanol to yield both previously reported "traditional"fractions and novel refined fractions thereof. Based on differences in mutual H-bonding affinities exerted by the solvents on one side and the OH group characteristics of the lignin oligo- A nd polymers on the other side, the 85% acetone-insoluble kraft lignin fraction AIKL, for example, could be further fractionated in 16% methanol-soluble and 67% methanol-insoluble parts. Sequential use of the two solvents practically resembled a refinement protocol that shed light on eventual "structural impurities"contained in the traditional fractions, which is not delineable easily in front of the background of a dominating spectroscopic image. Exploiting H-bonding characteristics offers a valid option for the facile generation of truly "structurally purified"lignin fractions. Acetone-insoluble, methanol-soluble MSAIKL, for example, exhibits 25% less aliphatic interunit bonding while being enriched in phenolic groups up to 25%, thus representing condensed, lower-molecular-weight structures with overall H-bond accepting character that was still contained in the overall larger-molecular-weight acetone-insoluble AIKL. More "polyphenylpropanoidic"parts practically free of condensed units, determining the overall structural picture of the unrefined lignins due to their overall abundance, are represented by the globally insoluble fractions like acetone-insoluble, methanol-insoluble MIAIKL. The original fractions and refined fractions generated based on targeting specific H-bonding affinities give a more homogeneous picture with respect to trends in glass transition temperatures, clearly indicating that Tg is dominated by actually both MW and nature of OH groups.

Pine bark extracts were tested as valid natural alternatives to common phenolic antioxidants to be deposited onto solid matrices. An analytical method for determining both deposition-efficacy and maintenance of antioxidant activity on fabrics surfaces was developed and successfully applied to phenolic antioxidants and pine tannins onto cotton fabric samples. Accumulated data suggest that common phenolic antioxidants and tannin contribute to an elevated antioxidant activity on fabric. A known source of odour is autoxidation of residual sebum on fabric, leading to the generation of malodourous compounds. Therefore, antioxidants hold the promise for mitigating malodour on fabrics, a top unmet consumer need around the globe.

The biotechnological conversion of lignocellulosic biomass is widely used within the development and refinement of biorefinery processes. Rather than functionalising lignin, however, enzymatic treatments are currently used during the initial pre-treatment of biomass for easing separation of components, or for funnelling purposes during the production of different fuel classes out of initial degradation products. Numerous studies exist that describe the use lignocellulosic enzymes of laccases, peroxidases, cellulases in biorefinery processes. Nonetheless, enzymes can be used also for specifically functionalising polymeric and monomeric phenols. We present here results obtained for the use of lipoxygenase for the valorisation of lignin that are based on detailed mechanistic insights. We used commercially available lipoxygenase (EC 1.13.11.x) for structurally modifying lignins. We further employed commercially available laccase (EC 1.10.3.2) to generate different structural features within oligomeric lignin chains such as to modify them for surface applications by covalently linking functional moieties naturally not present in lignin to the lignins via non-hydrolysable bonding motifs.

Lignin is the second most abundant polymer in forest biomass after cellulose. Compared to the ubiquitous use of cellulose, lignin is currently simply being wasted. In fact, as a waste product in the cellulose production, it serves mainly for the generation of energy. The reason for this lies in the challenging structural features and the patchy understanding of the correlation between structural features and polymer characteristics displayed by various lignins. This chapter will introduce the general characteristics and peculiarities of lignin as biopolymer and will present techniques for investigating structural issues. Approaches toward a valorization of lignin will be highlighted, showing the possibilities for using lignin in chemistry and material sciences.

To liberate society from its dependence on fossil-based fuels and materials it is pivotal to explore components of renewable plant biomass in applications that benefit from their intrinsic biodegradability, safety, and sustainability. Lignin, a byproduct of the pulp and paper industry, is a plausible material for carrying various types of cargo in small- and large-scale applications. Herein, possibilities and constraints regarding the physical-chemical properties of the lignin source as well as modifications and processing required to render lignins suitable for the loading and release of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and biological macromolecules is reviewed. In addition, the technical challenges, regulatory and toxicological aspects, and future research needed to realize some of the promises that nano- and microscaled lignin materials hold for a sustainable future are critically discussed.

Stimuli-responsive behavior of lignin microcapsules (LMCs) has been investigated along with the detailed characterization of their stability profiles. The disassembly of LMCs was found to be salt species-dependent, indicating the specific relevance of inherent kosmotropic and chaotropic characteristics. For the first time, a connection between the Hofmeister series and the stability profile of lignin microscale materials is established. LMCs showed excellent stability in water and under high temperature and pressure (autoclaving conditions). Active release is efficiently triggered by pH changes and balancing chaotropic and kosmotropic effects via salinity tuning.

The present invention relates to a consumer goods product comprising a consumer goods product ingredient and a lignin oligomer, wherein the lignin oligomer: (a) comprises less than 1 wt % sulphur content; (b) has a number average molecular weight (Mn) of from 800 Da to 1,800 Da; and (c) has a molar ratio of aromatic hydroxyl content to aliphatic hydroxyl content in the range of from 1.2 to 1.9, wherein the consumer goods product ingredient is an emulsifier, and wherein the lignin oligomer is in the form of an emulsion, and wherein the consumer goods product is selected from skin treatment composition, oral care treatment composition, and detergent composition.

The present invention relates to a consumer goods product comprising a consumer goods product ingredient and a functionalised lignin oligomer, wherein the functionalised lignin oligomer: (a) has an average number of lignin monomers of from 3 to 8; (b) comprises a siloxane functional group; (c) comprises a functionalisation content between 85 and 0.5% lignin (m/m).

The present invention relates to a consumer goods product comprising a consumer goods product ingredient and a non-cross linked functionalised lignin oligomer, wherein the lignin oligomer: (a) has a number average molecular weight (Mn) in the range of from 800 Da to 1,800 Da; (b) comprises the functional group: lignin_backbone-O—L—COOH wherein: lignin backbone' is the lignin structural backbone; and L is a linker comprising an —OH moiety; (c) has a hydroxyl content of at least 3 mmol/g; and (d) has a functionalisation content of from 0.2 mmol/g to 2.3 mmol/g.

The present invention relates to a consumer goods product comprising a consumer goods product ingredient and a non-crosslinked functionalised lignin oligomer, wherein the functionalised lignin oligomer: (a) has an average number of lignin monomers of from 3 to 8; (b) comprises a polyethylene glycol functional group; (c) comprises a functionalisation content between 90 and 0.5% lignin (m/m), wherein the consumer goods product ingredient is an emulsifier, and wherein the lignin oligomer is in the form of an emulsion, and wherein the consumer goods product is in the form of an oral care composition or a detergent composition.

The present invention relates to a consumer good product comprising: (a) a composition comprising or consisting of a mixture of: (i) chitin nanofibrils; (ii) lignin or a derivative thereof; and (iii) optionally, at least one polymer or co-polymer; and (b) at least one consumer goods ingredient.
