The objective of this research was to design a simple low-cost guardrail terminal at Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) Test Level 2 (TL-2) (44 mi/h) that assumed use of a current generic MGS W-beam guardrail, which is the most widely used guardrail in the country. The terminal design was tested and evaluated according to the safety-performance evaluation guidelines included in the second edition of MASH (1). The crash tests were performed in accordance with MASH TL-2. This report provides details on the development and simulations of different designs for the TL-2 W-beam end terminal, the crash tests and results, and the performance assessment of the TL-2 W-beam end terminal for MASH TL-2 gating terminal evaluation criteria. The final TL-2 W-beam end terminal design met the performance criteria for MASH Tests 2-35, 2-30, 2-31, and 2-37b for gating terminals.

The objective of this project was to develop a median opening protection system (MOPS) suitable for implementation in sloped medians between parallel bridges. One primary goal was to use currently available technologies to speed implementation. The MOPS was intended to prevent motorists from experiencing these roadway departure crashes between parallel bridges with a wide variety of vehicles. By addressing these specific objectives, the project aimed to significantly enhance the overall safety of the motoring public, contributing to a safer transportation environment.

The purpose of this study is to examine and develop the possibility of having a simplified test procedure in which only the relevant components of the truck are included, and a representative structure replaces the car. If possible, this would reduce costs and allow for greater repeatability. Analysis and evaluations are done via finite element models using ANSA, LS-Dyna and META. The conceptual design is visualized using CATIA V5. Results show good indication that the passenger car can be replaced by a trolley with deformable barriers mounted on it and the truck can be replaced by a simplified structure with main FUP components mounted onto it. Discussions about the numerical models results and the conceptual design highlight factors that show promising possibilities, but with emphasis on the continued work that is required.

The recorded information from the cameras is used to develop and better perform the vehicles in order to make them more secure. In this work, an image processing camera alignment system is presented, which allows locating the high-speed cameras involved in a crash test to reproduce the same position throughout a long-term project. This leads to better analysis ensuring more accuracy of the image-based measurements, obtaining comparable results for all the similar crash tests carried out in a project.

The first part contains overview of traffic accidents and car roll over conditions as well as roll over crash test. In the second part a description and design of all parts of flipping simulator is made. Impact tests on weakened streetlights were carried out using a high energy pendulum. The weakening mechanism consists of a circumferential notch at the base of the streetlight. The objective is twofold: firstly to reduce the maximum acceleration values during an impact which will lessen the potential injuries of the occupants of the vehicle and secondly to help avoid the installation of protective barriers, necessary when the supporting structure has no mechanical fuse, thus helping the failure with low energy absorption values. The machining of the notch is possible in streetlights already installed in the road, due to the fact that the actual values of the structural stiffness and strength of these structures are much higher than those values typically required by the external loadings (mainly wind actions). These preliminary tests have shown a significant decrease in the two parameters under analysis, maximum acceleration and absorbed energy, when using the circumferential notch. These results suggest it would be beneficial to perform a crash test following EN12767 in order to certify the streetlight.

A full-scale impact test was performed April 4, 2000, at the Federal Railroad Administration's Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo, Colorado by Transportation Technology Center, Inc., a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads. The test was performed using two Budd Company Pioneer-type commuter passenger cars coupled together. The purpose of the test was to measure strains, accelerations, and displacements during the impact and validate the computational and kinematic models of the vehicle impacting a rigid barrier. The test also showed the influence of the lead car on the secondary collision environment of the trailing car.

An apparatus for conducting impact events for use in conjunction with a horizontal accelerator includes a base having tracks attached to the top thereof; a seat slidably attached to the tracks, the seat capable of moving independently of the base and along the tracks, the seat for positioning a test dummy before and during an impact event; a barrier positioned and arranged adjacent one end of the base for impacting the test dummy, the barrier having load cells for generating signals in response to the impact between the test dummy and the barrier; an attenuator for impacting the seat and accelerating the seat up to the velocity of the base when the base is accelerated by the horizontal accelerator; and an anti-reverse mechanism for retaining the seat after the seat is accelerated up to the velocity of the horizontal accelerator. In operation, a test dummy is positioned on the seat and secured, if desired. The seat is slidably positioned on the base the desired distance from the barrier. The horizontal accelerator is fired, in accordance with a predetermined acceleration profile. As the base accelerates, the scat contacts the attenuator wherein the dummy begins to slide off the seat and impact the barrier. The load cells in the barrier generate signals in response to the impact. After the seat contacts the attenuator, the anti-reverse mechanism retains the seat adjacent the barrier.

A prototype manikin with internal data acquisition system (MIDAS) has been developed and received by the US Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory. In addition to a novel design of the spinal column and pelvis of the Hybrid III automotive manikin, the new MIDAS includes a built-in signal conditioning and acquisition electronics. This report documents the initial modifications to the manikin and includes a description of the external software (MIDAS 3.0) for control, communication, and posttest downloading and analysis of the data.
