The High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a NASA probe-class mission concept that will combine high spatial resolution X-ray imaging (<10 arcsec FWHM) and broad spectral coverage (0.1−150 keV) with an effective area far superior to current facilities (including XMM-Newton and NuSTAR) to enable revolutionary new insights into a variety of important astrophysical problems. Optimized nanometer-thin Ni-based multilayer coatings enable high performance of focusing X-ray telescopes to energies up to 150 keV and beyond, though current fabricated Ni-based coatings contain high interfacial roughness which will affect the predicted performance of the telescope. As part of the thin film coating development for the High Energy X-ray Probe, we report on the current development of reducing the coating roughness in periodic NiV/Si multilayer coatings. The multilayers are fabricated using the direct current magnetron sputtering coating facility at DTU Space, using different types of sputtering collimators and different reactive sputtering gas concentrations, optimized for the production of low interfacial roughness. The multilayers are characterized using X-ray reflectometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. More information on HEX-P, including the full team list, is available at hexp.org.

The future Athena observatory will feature optics with unprecedented collecting area enabled by silicon pore optics technology. In order to achieve the telescope effective area requirements at 1 keV and 7 keV, thin film coatings of iridium with a low-density overcoat are deposited onto the mirror substrates. Assembling the coated silicon pore optics plates into mirror modules for the Athena optics requires wet chemical processing and thermal annealing. While iridium appears to be compatible with the post-coating processes, previous studies have shown degradation of the low-density material. The overcoat layer is particularly critical for the low-energy telescope performance, so several candidate materials (boron carbide, silicon carbide and carbon) have been studied to identify a compatible thin film design. We present the characterisation of x-ray mirror performance using x-ray reflectometry, as well as the measurements of residual film stress with stylus profilometry. Furthermore, we evaluate the effects of post-coating treatment in order to recommend the most suitable overcoat material for the telescope.

Nanometer-thin multilayer coatings can enable high performance of focusing X-ray telescopes to energies up to 200 keV and beyond. In this paper we discuss the multilayer parameters and their limitations necessary for the reflection of hard X-ray photons. We present several multilayer coating designs that are optimized with a Differential Evolution algorithm to perform a stochastic global search of the multi-parametric model space. The coating designs are based on the new specifications of the HEX-P mission geometry, optimizing within the energy range 60 keV - 200 keV. We compare the simulated reflectivity spectra of Si/Ni, Si/Pt and Si/W, at different incident angles. We find the effective upper limit of bilayers in the multilayer stack, beyond which reflectivity will not be increased. We discuss a hybrid multilayer coating design, consisting of either a Si/Pt or Si/W multilayer with a top Si/Ni multilayer.

The thin film deposition technology for fabrication of the mirror optics for the Advanced Telescope for HighEnergy Astrophysics (ATHENA) has been established. Numerous coating process parameters impact the quality of the thin films. Defining a margin within the coating process parameter space, where the deposited thin film performs similar in X-ray reflectivity is key to avoid unforeseen risks within the coating process for the ATHENA flight optics production. In this work, we investigate the coating process parameter influence on the thin film properties with a focus on micro roughness, deposition rate and residual film stress when deposited under various process conditions. The thin films were produced by varying the following three coating process parameters: discharge power, discharge voltage and working gas pressure. The thin films were characterized using X–ray reflectometry at 3.4–10.0 keV. A main result of this work is that the residual stress of single layer iridium and boron carbide films can be reduced by a factor of approximately two, by increasing the working gas pressure while maintaining a high film quality.

IAXO is a large-scale axion helioscope that will look for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs), produced in the Sun, with unprecedented sensitivity. BabyIAXO is conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics and detectors) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as prototype for IAXO, but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with relevant physics reach itself, and with potential for discovery. The BabyIAXO magnet will feature two 10 m long, 70 cm diameter bores, and will host two detection lines (optics and detector) of dimensions similar to the final ones foreseen for IAXO. BabyIAXO will detect or reject solar axions or ALPs with axion-photon couplings down to gaγ ∼ 1.5 × 10−11 GeV−1, and masses up to ma ∼ 0.25 eV. BabyIAXO will offer additional opportunities for axion research in view of IAXO, like the development of precision x-ray detectors to identify particular spectral features in the solar axion spectrum, and the implementation of radiofrequency-cavity-based axion dark matter setups.

Axions are a natural consequence of the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, the most compelling solution to the strong-CP problem. Similar axion-like particles (ALPs) also appear in a number of possible extensions of the Standard Model, notably in string theories. Both axions and ALPs are very well motivated candidates for Dark Matter, and in addition, they would be copiously produced at the sun’s core. A relevant effort during the last decade has been the CAST experiment at CERN, the most sensitive axion helioscope to-date. The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a large-scale 4th generation helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for solar axions or ALPs with a signal to background ratio of about 5 orders of magnitude higher than CAST. Recently the IAXO collaboration has proposed and intermediate experimental stage, BabyIAXO, conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics, detectors and sun-tracking systems) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as pathfinder for IAXO but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with record and relevant physics reach in itself with potential for discovery. BabyIAXO was endorsed by the Physics Review committee of DESY last May 2019. Here we will review the status and prospects of BabyIAXO and its potential to probe the most physics motivated regions of the axion & ALPs parameter space.

The thin film coating technology for the European Space Agency mission, Advanced Telescope for High-Energy Astrophysics (Athena) has been established. The X-ray optics of the Athena telescope is based on Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) technology which is enhanced by the thin film coatings deposited on the reflective surface of the SPO plates. In this work, we present a literature study of the coating process parameter space and provide an overview of the thin film properties with a focus on micro roughness, chemical composition and wear resistance when deposited under various process conditions. We determined, that the thin film density depends strongly on the mobility of the adatoms on the substrate surface. Some coating process parameters, which have a significant impact on the adatom mobility are the discharge voltage, the working gas pressure and the substrate temperature.

The development of high-quality thin film coatings for the Athena X-ray optics is progressing, following the commissioning of an industrial scale coating facility. The assembly of silicon pore optics into mirror modules for the Athena telescope requires wet-chemical exposure of coated mirror plates to prepare bonding areas for stacking, as well as an annealing step to improve bond strength. It is therefore critical to evaluate how these post-coating processes could affect the mirror coating performance and stability. We present X-ray reflectometry characterization of iridium thin films deposited on photoresist patterned Silicon Pore Optics plates to investigate the compatibility with the stacking process steps for the manufacturing of the Athena optics.

We present a teaching concept which combines theory, experimental work, project management and organization. As part of the Earth and Space Physics and Engineering education at DTU Space, a group of first year undergraduate students were given the task to design, build and test a DC magnetron sputtering system within a very limited budget and time frame. The teaching concept is designed to promote the students' autonomous learning, and a major part of the project was to teach the students how to develop group dynamics successfully. The students successfully managed to build a direct current magnetron sputtering system wherein a plasma glow was produced. The system can be used for depositing thin film coatings, an enabling technology for numerous applications.

As part of the manufacturing process of mirror modules for the Athena X-ray telescope, Silicon Pore Optics plates are assembled into mirror module stacks. The plates that form each stack are held together by direct bonding, relying on van der Waals forces and covalent bonds for adhesion. One way to increase the strength of the covalent bonds is through annealing of the mirror stacks. It is of critical importance to the mission to ensure compatibility between the reflective coating and any post-coating processing of the plates. We present our findings of the impact of annealing on the X-ray re ectance of coated mirrors relevant for the Athena mission. These are Ir single layers, as well as Ir/B4C, Ir/SiC, and Ir/C bilayers. We investigate the effect on the performance of the coatings after annealing at atmospheric pressure and at a low vacuum using X-ray reflectometry. B4C is found to suffer degradation from annealing under atmospheric conditions but not when annealed in vacuum. All other materials investigated are robust to atmospheric annealing.

The Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics (Athena) is a Cosmic Vision L-class mission of the European Space Agency selected for launch in the early 2030s1. The observatory features a single X-ray telescope with a 12 m focal length. The focusing Wolter-I optics is based on Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) technology2. The Athena science objectives require a high performance in the 0.3-12 keV range which is obtained with X-ray reflective thin films.

We present an experimental examination of iridium and boron carbide thin-film coatings for the purpose of fabricating x-ray optics. We use a combination of x-ray reflectometry and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to model the structure, composition, density, thickness, and micro-roughness of the thin films. We demonstrate in our analyses how the two characterization techniques are complementary, and from this we derive that an overlayer originating from atmospheric contamination with a thickness between 1.0–1.6 nm is present on the surface. The magnetron sputtered iridium films are measured to have a density of 22.4g/cm3. The boron carbide film exhibits a change in chemical composition in the top ∼2nm of the film surface when exposed to the ambient atmosphere. The chemical reaction occurring on the surface is due to an incorporation of oxygen and hydrogen present in the ambient atmosphere. Lastly, we present a correlation between the absorption edges and the emission lines exhibited by the thin films in an energy range from 50–800 eV and the impact on the reflectivity performance due to contamination in thin films.

Silicon pore optics are a new type of high-performance x-ray optics designed to enable future space-borne x-ray observatories such as European Space Agency’s Athena. These optics will make it possible to build telescopes with effective areas of the order of a few square meters and angular resolutions better than 5 s of arc. During manufacturing of the optics, thin film metallic coatings are sputtered onto mirror plates to help achieve this large effective area. Then, these plates are stacked on top of each other using direct silicon bonding to achieve the shape of an approximate Wolter type-I telescope design. It is, therefore, necessary to verify the compatibility of the coating and bonding processes. We observe the unintentional removal of coatings on silicon pore optics plates after their wet chemical activation, a step required to make direct bonding possible. In this paper, we investigate plasma etching prior to thin film deposition as a solution to this problem. First, we ensure that plasma etching does not impact the low surface roughness required to achieve high imaging performance. Then, we demonstrate that plasma etching before thin film deposition prevents unintentional removal of the metallic coatings during the activation step, making coating deposition compatible with direct bonding of silicon pore optics plates.

As part of the thin film development for the Athena X-ray telescope and X-ray optics in general, we investigated the residual stress in iridium and chromium thin films deposited using direct current magnetron sputtering. Residual stresses in thin films can affect the performance and adhesion properties of the fabricated thin film coated X-ray optics. We characterized the thin films using X-ray reflectometry to determine the thin film thicknesses and stylus profilometry to determine the residual film stresses. To counterbalance the compressive stress identified in the iridium thin films, we introduced a chromium thin film layer for which the residual stress is tensile beneath the iridium film. However, chromium thin films are known to exhibit a grainy growth resulting in a high surface roughness which was also observed in this work. In this paper, we evaluated the effect on the iridium surface roughness when introducing a chromium underlayer and discussed the effect on the X-ray optics performance.

The demand for X-ray optics increases and so do their performance requirements. Iridium (Ir) thin film coatings have proven to be very robust and exhibit excellent reflective properties within the X-ray regime. However, the residual stress in Ir thin films is high and studies show that thin film Ir coatings with a thickness of 10–30 nm exhibit residual compressive stress1 as illustrated in Figure 1.

With a number of upcoming spaceborne and ground-based observatories equipped with X-ray telescopes that rely on high throughput at low energies, it is crucial to characterize these optics at the relevant energies to obtain a detailed understanding of their behavior and performance. DTU Space has commissioned a state-of-the-art Low-Energy X-ray Reflectometer (LEXR) with the purpose of studying thin-film performance of especially low-Z X-ray coatings.

A state-of-the-art Low-Energy X-ray Reflectometer (LEXR) is in operation at DTU Space with the main purpose of characterizing coatings for the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA), a selected Lclass ESA mission. In particular, soft materials are difficult to characterize at higher energies so the 1.487 keV beamline compliments our existing 8.048 keV reflectometer, allowing for a more complete understanding of thinfilm X-ray characteristics. Documenting and qualifying the as-deposited coatings for X-ray telescope optics is of crucial importance, both to ensure that the effective area requirements are met, but also to quantify any temporal evolution in coating characteristics as well as the impact of manufacturing process parameters on mirror performance. It is notably relevant in the case of ATHENA, as there is a desire to enhance the low-energy performance by using a low-Z material overcoating on top of the Ir coating. We report on the commissioning and qualify the performance of the as-built 1.487 keV reflectometer as well as discuss measurement repeatability and system limitations

We present the latest progress on the industrial scale coating facility for the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA) mission. The facility has been successfully commissioned and tested, completing an important milestone in preparation of the Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) production capability. We qualified the coating facility by depositing iridium and boron carbide thin films in different configurations under various process conditions including pre-coating in-system plasma cleaning. The thin films were characterized with X-Ray Reectometry (XRR) using laboratory X-ray sources Cu K-α at 8.048 keV and PTB's four-crystal monochromator beamline at the synchrotron radiation facility BESSY II in the energy range from 3.6 keV to 10.0 keV. Additional X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were performed with Al K-α radiation to analyze the composition of the deposited thin films.

X-ray reflectivity (XRR) characterization of X-ray mirrors is an essential step for designing space telescopes and instruments. We report on production and characterization of platinum thin films coated onto a at thick glass substrate for evaluating measurement results obtained using several XRR systems. The main objective of this study is to compare the XRR results measured using facilities at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU Space, and BESSY II for the Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA) mission funded by the European Space Agency, ESA. This sample will be used as a reference sample for testing and calibrating similar measurements at relevant X-ray facilities. This information demonstrates the stable performance of the platinum mirror as a reference sample. Also, the overlayer effect on mirror performance is investigated.

Qualification of coating performance at the low-energy range of the Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics (ATHENA) is important to ensure that the mirror coatings satisfy the performance criteria required to meet ATHENA's science objectives. We report on the design, implementation, and expected performance of a state-of-the-art Low-Energy X-ray Reflectometer (LEXR) acquired with the purpose of qualifying the soft energy X-ray performance of mirror coatings for ATHENA. The reflectometer components are housed in a vacuum chamber and utilizes a microfocus Al source with custom made Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors and W/Si monochromator to produce a collimated beam of 1.487 keV photons. The system has been designed with source interchangeability, allowing reconfiguration to an 8.048 keV reflectometer using a Cu source or other energies with sources such as Fe, Mg, etc. Several mirror samples can be mounted on a motorized stage, and a 2D CCD camera is used to obtain spatially resolved detection.

Excellent X-ray reflective mirror coatings are key in order to meet the performance requirements of the ATHENA telescope. The baseline coating design of ATHENA was initially formed by Ir/B4C but extensive studies have identified critical issues with the stability of the B4C top layer which shows strong evolution over time and appears incompatible with the industrialization processes required for the production of mirror modules. Motivated by the need for a compatible top layer material to improve the telescope performance at low energies and based on simulated performance, a SiC top layer has been selected as the best substitute to B4C. We report the latest development of Ir/SiC bilayer coatings optimized for ATHENA and the characterization of coating performance and stability.

Studying the 2-200 keV energy range, HEXP has 40 times the sensitivity of any previous mission in the 10-80 keV band, and will be the first focusing instrument in the 80-200 keV band. A successor to the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), a NASA Small Explorer launched in 2012, HEX-P addresses key NASA science objectives, and will serve as an important complement to ESA’s L-class Athena mission. HEX-P will utilize multilayer coated X-ray optics, and in this paper we present the details of the optical design, and discuss the multilayer prescriptions necessary for the reflection of hard X-ray photons. We consider multiple module designs with the aim of investigating the tradeoff between high- and low-energy effective area, and review the technology development necessary to reach that goal within the next decade.

The ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics) X-ray observatory is an ESA-selected L2 class mission. In the proposed configuration, the optical assembly has a diameter of 2.2 m with an effective area of 1.4 m2 at 1 keV, 0.25 m2 at 6 keV, and requires an angular resolution of 5 arcsec. To meet the requirements of effective area and angular resolution, the technology of Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) was selected for the optics implementation. The ATHENA's optic assembly requires hundreds of SPOs mirror modules (MMs), obtained by stacking wedged and ribbed silicon wafer plates onto silicon mandrels to form the Wolter-I configuration. Different factors can contribute to limit the imaging performances of SPOs, such as i) diffraction through the pore apertures, ii) plate deformations due to fabrication errors and surface roughness, iii) alignment errors among plates in an MM, and iv) co-focality errors within the MMs assembly. In order to determine the fabrication and assembling tolerances, the impact of these contributions needs to be assessed prior to manufacturing. A set of simulation tools responding to this need was developed in the framework of the ESA-financed projects SIMPOSIuM and ASPHEA. In this paper, we present the performance simulation obtained for the recently proposed ATHENA configuration in terms of effective area, and we provide a simulation of the diffractive effects in a pair of SPO MMs. Finally, we present an updated sizing of magnetic diverter (a Halbach array) and the magnetic fields levels that can be reached in order to deviate the most energetic protons out of the detector field.

Thin film coated mirrors enable pioneering observations of X-rays and soft gamma rays. The performance of the reflective mirrors is key in expanding knowledge of the hot and energetic Universe. A critical part of maturing the optics technology is firstly, to establish a smooth surface and interface of the selected materials and, secondly, to obtain an in-depth understanding of the contamination in the thin films and ultimately, to ensure long-term stability. The aim of this study is to investigate the chemical composition, roughness and stability of boron carbide and iridium thin films and the effects of nitrogen incorporation.

We present two new NuSTAR observations of the narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy Mrk 766 and give constraints on the two scenarios previously proposed to explain its spectrum and that of other NLS1s: relativistic reflection and partial covering. The NuSTAR spectra show a strong hard (>15 keV) X-ray excess, while simultaneous soft X-ray coverage of one of the observations provided by XMM-Newton constrains the ionised absorption in the source. The pure reflection model requires a black hole of high spin (a > 0.92) viewed at a moderate inclination (i=46 +1°/-4)The pure partial covering model requires extreme parameters: the cut-off of the primary continuum is very low (22+7/-5keV) in one observation and the intrinsic X-ray emission must provide a large fraction (75%) of the bolometric luminosity. Allowing a hybrid model with both partial covering and reflection provides more reasonable absorption parameters and relaxes the constraints on reflection parameters. The fractional variability reduces around the iron K band and at high energies including the Compton hump, suggesting that the reflected emission is less variable than the continuum.

We perform an X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest and cleanest bare AGN known so far, Ark 120, in order to determine the process(es) at work in the vicinity of the SMBH. We present spectral analysis of data from an extensive campaign observing Ark 120 in X-rays with XMM-Newton (4$\times$120 ks, 2014 March 18-24), and NuSTAR (65.5 ks, 2014 March 22). During this very deep X-ray campaign, the source was caught in a high flux state similar to the earlier 2003 XMM-Newton observation, and about twice as bright as the lower-flux observation in 2013. The spectral analysis confirms the "softer when brighter" behaviour of Ark 120. The four XMM-Newton/pn spectra are characterized by the presence of a prominent soft X-ray excess and a significant FeK$\alpha$ complex. The continuum is very similar above about 3 keV, while significant variability is present for the soft X-ray excess. We find that relativistic reflection from a constant-density, flat accretion disk cannot simultaneously produce the soft excess, broad FeK$\alpha$ complex, and hard X-ray excess. Instead, Comptonization reproduces the broadband (0.3-79 keV) continuum well, together with a contribution from a mildly relativistic disk reflection spectrum. During this 2014 observational campaign, the soft X-ray spectrum of Ark 120 below $\sim$0.5 keV was found to be dominated by Comptonization of seed photons from the disk by a warm ($kT_{\rm e}$$\sim$0.5 keV), optically-thick corona ($\tau$$\sim$9). Above this energy, the X-ray spectrum becomes dominated by Comptonization from electrons in a hot optically thin corona, while the broad FeK$\alpha$ line and the mild Compton hump result from reflection off the disk at several tens of gravitational radii., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

MCG-5-23-16 was targeted in early 2015 with a half mega-seconds observing campaign using NuSTAR. Here we present the spectral analysis of these datasets along with an earlier observation and study the relativistic reflection and the primary coronal source. The data show strong reflection features in the form of both narrow and broad iron lines plus a Compton reflection hump. A cutoff energy is significantly detected in all exposures. The shape of the reflection spectrum does not change in the two years spanned by the observations, suggesting a stable geometry. A strong positive correlation is found between the cutoff energy and both the hard X-ray flux and spectral index. The measurements imply that the coronal plasma is not at the runaway electron-positron pair limit, and instead contains mostly electrons. NGC 1448 is one of the nearest luminous galaxies ($L_{8-1000\mu m} >$ 10$^{9} L_{\odot}$) to ours ($z$ $=$ 0.00390), and yet the active galactic nucleus (AGN) it hosts was only recently discovered, in 2009. In this paper, we present an analysis of the nuclear source across three wavebands: mid-infrared (MIR) continuum, optical, and X-rays. We observed the source with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), and combined this data with archival Chandra data to perform broadband X-ray spectral fitting ($\approx$0.5-40 keV) of the AGN for the first time. Our X-ray spectral analysis reveals that the AGN is buried under a Compton-thick (CT) column of obscuring gas along our line-of-sight, with a column density of $N_{\rm H}$(los) $\gtrsim$ 2.5 $\times$ 10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. The best-fitting torus models measured an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of $L_{2-10\rm{,int}}$ $=$ (3.5-7.6) $\times$ 10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, making NGC 1448 one of the lowest luminosity CTAGNs known. In addition to the NuSTAR observation, we also performed optical spectroscopy for the nucleus in this edge-on galaxy using the European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope. We re-classify the optical nuclear spectrum as a Seyfert on the basis of the Baldwin-Philips-Terlevich diagnostic diagrams, thus identifying the AGN at optical wavelengths for the first time. We also present high spatial resolution MIR observations of NGC 1448 with Gemini/T-ReCS, in which a compact nucleus is clearly detected. We present results from spectral fitting of the very high state of GX 339-4 with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and Swift. We use relativistic reflection modeling to measure the spin of the black hole and inclination of the inner disk and find a spin of 0.95[subscript -0.08][superscript +0.02] and inclination of 30° ± 1° (statistical errors). These values agree well with previous results from reflection modeling. With the exceptional sensitivity of NuSTAR at the high-energy side of the disk spectrum, we are able to constrain multiple physical parameters simultaneously using continuum fitting. By using the constraints from reflection as input for the continuum fitting method, we invert the conventional fitting procedure to estimate the mass and distance of GX 339-4 using just the X-ray spectrum, finding a mass of 9.0[subscript -1.2][superscript +1.6]M[subscript ⊙] and distance of 8.4 ± 0.9 kpc (statistical errors).

We perform an X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest and cleanest bare AGN known so far, Ark 120, in order to determine the process(es) at work in the vicinity of the SMBH. We present spectral analysis of data from an extensive campaign observing Ark 120 in X-rays with XMM-Newton (4$\times$120 ks, 2014 March 18-24), and NuSTAR (65.5 ks, 2014 March 22). During this very deep X-ray campaign, the source was caught in a high flux state similar to the earlier 2003 XMM-Newton observation, and about twice as bright as the lower-flux observation in 2013. The spectral analysis confirms the "softer when brighter" behaviour of Ark 120. The four XMM-Newton/pn spectra are characterized by the presence of a prominent soft X-ray excess and a significant FeK$\alpha$ complex. The continuum is very similar above about 3 keV, while significant variability is present for the soft X-ray excess. We find that relativistic reflection from a constant-density, flat accretion disk cannot simultaneously produce the soft excess, broad FeK$\alpha$ complex, and hard X-ray excess. Instead, Comptonization reproduces the broadband (0.3-79 keV) continuum well, together with a contribution from a mildly relativistic disk reflection spectrum. During this 2014 observational campaign, the soft X-ray spectrum of Ark 120 below $\sim$0.5 keV was found to be dominated by Comptonization of seed photons from the disk by a warm ($kT_{\rm e}$$\sim$0.5 keV), optically-thick corona ($\tau$$\sim$9). Above this energy, the X-ray spectrum becomes dominated by Comptonization from electrons in a hot optically thin corona, while the broad FeK$\alpha$ line and the mild Compton hump result from reflection off the disk at several tens of gravitational radii., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

MCG-5-23-16 was targeted in early 2015 with a half mega-seconds observing campaign using NuSTAR. Here we present the spectral analysis of these datasets along with an earlier observation and study the relativistic reflection and the primary coronal source. The data show strong reflection features in the form of both narrow and broad iron lines plus a Compton reflection hump. A cutoff energy is significantly detected in all exposures. The shape of the reflection spectrum does not change in the two years spanned by the observations, suggesting a stable geometry. A strong positive correlation is found between the cutoff energy and both the hard X-ray flux and spectral index. We present the first full catalog and science results for the NuSTAR serendipitous survey. The catalog incorporates data taken during the first 40 months of NuSTAR operation, which provide ~20Ms of effective exposure time over 331 fields, with an areal coverage of 13 sq deg, and 497 sources detected in total over the 3-24 keV energy range. There are 276 sources with spectroscopic redshifts and classifications, largely resulting from our extensive campaign of ground-based spectroscopic followup. We characterize the overall sample in terms of the X-ray, optical, and infrared source properties. The sample is primarily comprised of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), detected over a large range in redshift from z = 0.002 - 3.4 (median of = 0.56), but also includes 16 spectroscopically confirmed Galactic sources. There is a large range in X-ray flux, from log( f_3-24keV / erg s^-1 cm^-2 ) ~ -14 to -11, and in rest-frame 10-40 keV luminosity, from log( L_10-40keV / erg s^-1 ) ~ 39 to 46, with a median of 44.1. Approximately 79% of the NuSTAR sources have lower energy (<10 keV) X-ray counterparts from XMM-Newton, Chandra, and Swift/XRT. The mid-infrared (MIR) analysis, using WISE all-sky survey data, shows that MIR AGN color selections miss a large fraction of the NuSTAR-selected AGN population, from ~15% at the highest luminosities (Lx > 10^44 erg s^-1) to ~80% at the lowest luminosities (Lx < 10^43 erg s^-1). Our optical spectroscopic analysis finds that the observed fraction of optically obscured AGNs (i.e., the Type 2 fraction) is F_Type2 = 53(+14-15)%, for a well-defined subset of the 8-24 keV selected sample. This is higher, albeit at a low significance level, than the Type 2 fraction measured for redshift- and luminosity-matched AGNs selected by <10 keV X-ray missions., Comment: 49 pages, 23 figures, 8 tables. Disk and wind signatures are seen in the soft state of Galactic black holes, while the jet is seen in the hard state. Here we study the disk-wind connection in the $\rho$ class of variability in GRS 1915+105 using a joint NuSTAR-Chandra observation. The source shows 50 sec limit cycle oscillations. By including new information provided by the reflection spectrum, and using phase-resolved spectroscopy, we find that the change in the inner disk inferred from the blackbody emission is not matched by reflection measurements. The latter is almost constant, independent of the continuum model. The two radii are comparable only if the disk temperature color correction factor changes, an effect that could be due to the changing opacity of the disk caused by changes in metal abundances. The disk inclination is similar to that inferred from the jet axis, and oscillates by ~10 deg. The simultaneous Chandra data show the presence of two wind components with velocities between 500-5000 km/s, and possibly two more with velocities reaching 20,000 km/s (~0.06 c). The column densities are ~5e22 cm$^{-2}$. An upper limit to the wind response time of 2 sec is measured, implying a launch radius of <6e10 cm. The changes in wind velocity and absorbed flux require the geometry of the wind to change during the oscillations, constraining the wind to be launched from a distance of 290 - 1300 rg from the black hole. Both datasets support fundamental model predictions in which a bulge originates in the inner disk and moves outward as the instability progresses., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyse high-quality NuSTAR observations of the local (z = 0.011) Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) IC 3639, in conjunction with archival Suzaku and Chandra data. This provides the first broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the source, spanning nearly two decades in energy (0.5-30 keV). Previous X-ray observations of the source below 10 keV indicated strong reflection/obscuration on the basis of a pronounced iron fluorescence line at 6.4 keV. The hard X-ray energy coverage of NuSTAR, together with self-consistent toroidal reprocessing models, enables direct broadband constraints on the obscuring column density of the source. We find the source to be heavily Compton-thick (CTK) with an obscuring column in excess of $3.6\times10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, unconstrained at the upper end. We further find an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of $\textrm{log}_{10}(L_{\textrm{2-10 keV}} \textrm{[erg s}^{-1}]) = 43.4^{+0.6}_{-1.1}$ to 90% confidence, almost 400 times the observed flux, and consistent with various multi-wavelength diagnostics. Such a high intrinsic to observed flux ratio in addition to an Fe-K$\alpha$ fluorescence line equivalent width exceeding 2 keV is extreme amongst known bona fide CTK AGN, which we suggest are both due to the high level of obscuration present around IC 3639. Our study demonstrates that broadband spectroscopic modelling with NuSTAR enables large corrections for obscuration to be carried out robustly, and emphasises the need for improved modelling of AGN tori showing intense iron fluorescence., Comment: Accepted for publication in the The Astrophysical Journal, 26/10/2016

We report the first hard X-ray observations with NuSTAR of the BL Lac type blazar PKS 2155-304, augmented with soft X-ray data from XMM-Newton and gamma-ray data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope, obtained in April 2013 when the source was in a very low flux state. A joint NuSTAR and XMM spectrum, covering the energy range 0.5 - 60 keV, is best described by a model consisting of a log-parabola component with curvature beta = 0.3(+0.2,-0.1) and a (local) photon index 3.04 +/- 0.15 at photon energy of 2 keV, and a hard power-law tail with photon index 2.2 +/- 0.4. The hard X-ray tail can be smoothly joined to the quasi-simultaneous gamma-ray spectrum by a synchrotron self-Compton component produced by an electron distribution with index p = 2.2. Assuming that the power-law electron distribution extends down to the minimum electron Lorentz factor gamma_min = 1 and that there is one proton per electron, an unrealistically high total jet power L_p of roughly 10^47 erg/s is inferred. This can be reduced by two orders of magnitude either by considering a significant presence of electron-positron pairs with lepton-to-proton ratio of at least 30, or by introducing an additional, low-energy break in the electron energy distribution at the electron Lorentz factor gamma_br1 of roughly 100. Hot, Dust-Obscured Galaxies (Hot DOGs), selected from the WISE all sky infrared survey, host some of the most powerful Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) known, and might represent an important stage in the evolution of galaxies. Most known Hot DOGs are at $z> 1.5$, due in part to a strong bias against identifying them at lower redshift related to the selection criteria. We present a new selection method that identifies 153 Hot DOG candidates at $z\sim 1$, where they are significantly brighter and easier to study. We validate this approach by measuring a redshift $z=1.009$, and an SED similar to higher redshift Hot DOGs for one of these objects, WISE J1036+0449 ($L_{\rm\,Bol}\simeq 8\times 10^{46}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$), using data from Keck/LRIS and NIRSPEC, SDSS, and CSO. We find evidence of a broadened component in MgII, which, if due to the gravitational potential of the supermassive black hole, would imply a black hole mass of $M_{\rm\,BH}\simeq 2 \times 10^8 M_{\odot}$, and an Eddington ratio of $\lambda_{\rm\,Edd}\simeq 2.7$. WISE J1036+0449 is the first Hot DOG detected by NuSTAR, and the observations show that the source is heavily obscured, with a column density of $N_{\rm\,H}\simeq(2-15)\times10^{23}\rm\,cm^{-2}$. The source has an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of $\sim 6\times 10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$, a value significantly lower than that expected from the mid-infrared/X-ray correlation. We also find that the other Hot DOGs observed by X-ray facilities show a similar deficiency of X-ray flux. We discuss the origin of the X-ray weakness and the absorption properties of Hot DOGs. Hot DOGs at $z\lesssim1$ could be excellent laboratories to probe the characteristics of the accretion flow and of the X-ray emitting plasma at extreme values of the Eddington ratio., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 16 pages

Aims. We study the long-term variability of the well-known Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 1210 (a.k.a. UGC 4203, or the Phoenix galaxy). Methods. The source was observed by many X-ray facilities in the last 20 years. Here we present a NuSTAR observation and put the results in context of previously published observations. Results. NuSTAR observed Mrk 1210 in 2012 for 15.4 ks. The source showed Compton-thin obscuration similar to that observed by Chandra, Suzaku, BeppoSAX and XMM-Newton over the past two decades, but different from the first observation by ASCA in 1995, in which the active nucleus was caught in a low flux state - or obscured by Compton-thick matter, with a reflection-dominated spectrum. Thanks to the high-quality hard X-ray spectrum obtained with NuSTAR and exploiting the long-term spectral coverage spanning 16.9 years, we can precisely disentangle the transmission and reflection components and put constraints on both the intrinsic long-term variability and hidden nucleus scenarios. In the former case, the distance between the reflector and the source must be at least ~ 2 pc, while in the latter one the eclipsing cloud may be identified with a water maser-emitting clump., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

PG1247+267 is one of the most luminous known quasars at $z\sim2$ and is a strongly super-Eddington accreting SMBH candidate. We obtained NuSTAR data of this intriguing source in December 2014 with the aim of studying its high-energy emission, leveraging the broad band covered by the new NuSTAR and the archival XMM-Newton data. Several measurements are in agreement with the super-Eddington scenario for PG1247+267: the soft power law ($\Gamma=2.3\pm0.1$); the weak ionized Fe emission line and a hint of the presence of outflowing ionized gas surrounding the SMBH. The presence of an extreme reflection component is instead at odds with the high accretion rate proposed for this quasar. This can be explained with three different scenarios; all of them are in good agreement with the existing data, but imply very different conclusions: i) a variable primary power law observed in a low state, superimposed on a reflection component echoing a past, higher flux state; ii) a power law continuum obscured by an ionized, Compton thick, partial covering absorber; and iii) a relativistic disk reflector in a lamp-post geometry, with low coronal height and high BH spin. The first model is able to explain the high reflection component in terms of variability. The second does not require any reflection to reproduce the hard emission, while a rather low high-energy cutoff of $\sim100$ keV is detected for the first time in such a high redshift source. The third model require a face-on geometry, which may affect the SMBH mass and Eddington ratio measurements. We present results from sensitive, multi-epoch NuSTAR observations of the late-type star-forming galaxy M83 (d=4.6 Mpc), which is the first investigation to spatially resolve the hard (E>10 keV) X-ray emission of this galaxy. The nuclear region and ~ 20 off-nuclear point sources, including a previously discovered ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source, are detected in our NuSTAR observations. The X-ray hardnesses and luminosities of the majority of the point sources are consistent with hard X-ray sources resolved in the starburst galaxy NGC 253. We infer that the hard X-ray emission is most likely dominated by intermediate accretion state black hole binaries and neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (Z-sources). We construct the X-ray binary luminosity function (XLF) in the NuSTAR band for an extragalactic environment for the first time. The M83 XLF has a steeper XLF than the X-ray binary XLF in NGC 253, consistent with previous measurements by Chandra at softer X-ray energies. The NuSTAR integrated galaxy spectrum of M83 drops quickly above 10 keV, which is also seen in the starburst galaxies NGC253, NGC 3310 and NGC 3256. The NuSTAR observations constrain any AGN to be either highly obscured or to have an extremely low luminosity of $_{\sim}^<$10$^{38}$ erg/s (10-30 keV), implying it is emitting at a very low Eddington ratio. An X-ray point source consistent with the location of the nuclear star cluster with an X-ray luminosity of a few times 10$^{38}$ erg/s may be a low-luminosity AGN but is more consistent with being an X-ray binary., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (25 pages, 17 figures)

We present an analysis of NuSTAR observations of a hard intermediate state of the transient black hole GX 339-4 taken in January 2015. As the source softened significantly over the course of the 1.3 d-long observation we split the data into 21 sub-sets and find that the spectrum of all of them can be well described by a power-law continuum with an additional relativistically blurred reflection component. The photon index increases from ~1.69 to ~1.77 over the course of the observation. The accretion disk is truncated at around 9 gravitational radii in all spectra. We also perform timing analysis on the same 21 individual data sets, and find a strong type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO), which increase in frequency from ~0.68 to ~1.05 Hz with time. The frequency change is well correlated with the softening of the spectrum. We discuss possible scenarios for the production of the QPO and calculate predicted inner radii in the relativistic precession model as well as the global disk mode oscillations model. We find discrepancies with respect to the observed values in both models unless we allow for a black hole mass of ~100 M_sun , which is highly unlikely. We discuss possible systematic uncertainties, in particular with the measurement of the inner accretion disk radius in the relativistic reflection model. We conclude that the combination of observed QPO frequencies and inner accretion disk radii, as obtained from spectral fitting, is difficult to reconcile with current models., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present NuSTAR hard X-ray observations of Sh 2-104, a compact HII region containing several young massive stellar clusters (YMSCs). We have detected distinct hard X-ray sources coincident with localized VERITAS TeV emission recently resolved from the giant gamma-ray complex MGRO J2019+37 in the Cygnus region. Faint, diffuse X-ray emission coincident with the eastern YMSC in Sh2-104 is likely the result of colliding winds of component stars. Just outside the radio shell of Sh 2-104 lies 3XMM J201744.7+365045 and a nearby nebula NuSTAR J201744.3+364812, whose properties are most consistent with extragalactic objects. The combined XMM-Newton and NuSTAR spectrum of 3XMM J201744.7+365045 is well-fit to an absorbed power-law model with NH = (3.1 +/- 1.0)E22 cm^-2 and photon index Gamma = 2.1 +/- 0.1. Based on possible long-term flux variation and the lack of detected pulsations (< 43% modulation), this object is likely a background AGN rather than a Galactic pulsar. The spectrum of the NuSTAR nebula shows evidence of an emission line at E = 5.6 keV suggesting an optically obscured galaxy cluster at z = 0.19 +/- 0.02 (d = 800 Mpc) and Lx = 1.2E44 erg/s. Follow-up Chandra observations of Sh 2-104 will help identify the nature of the X-ray sources and their relation to MGRO J2019+37. We also show that the putative VERITAS gamma-ray excess south of Sh 2-104 is most likely associated with the newly discovered Fermi pulsar PSR J2017+3625 and not the HII region., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, Latex, emulateapj style. MeV blazars are a sub--population of the blazar family, exhibiting larger--than--average jet powers, accretion luminosities and black hole masses. Because of their extremely hard X--ray continua, these objects are best studied in the X-ray domain. Here, we report on the discovery by the $Fermi$ Large Area Telescope and subsequent follow-up observations with $NuSTAR$, $Swift$ and GROND of a new member of the MeV blazar family: PMN J0641$-$0320. Our optical spectroscopy provides confirmation that this is a flat--spectrum radio quasar located at a redshift of $z=1.196$. Its very hard $NuSTAR$ spectrum (power--law photon index of $\sim$1 up to $\sim$80 keV) indicates that the emission is produced via inverse Compton scattering off photons coming from outside the jet.The overall spectral energy distribution of PMN J0641$-$0320 is typical of powerful blazars and by reproducing it with a simple one-zone leptonic emission model we find the emission region to be located either inside the broad line region or within the dusty torus., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

We present a multi-epoch hard X-ray analysis of Cygnus X-1 in its soft state based on four observations with NuSTAR. Despite the basic similarity of the observed spectra, there is clear spectral variability between epochs. To investigate this variability, we construct a model incorporating both the standard disk-corona continuum and relativistic reflection from the accretion disk, based on prior NuSTAR work on Cygnus X-1, and apply this model to each epoch independently. We find excellent consistency for the black hole spin, and the iron abundance of the accretion disk, which are expected to remain constant on observational timescales. In particular, we confirm that Cygnus X-1 hosts a rapidly rotating black hole, 0.93

In this paper we report the results of an X-ray monitoring campaign on the heavily obscured Seyfert galaxy Markarian 3 carried out between the fall of 2014 and the spring of 2015 with NuSTAR, Suzaku and XMM-Newton. The hard X-ray spectrum of Markarian 3 is variable on all the time scales probed by our campaign, down to a few days. The observed continuum variability is due to an intrinsically variable primary continuum seen in transmission through a large, but still Compton-thin column density (N_H~0.8-1.1$\times$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$). If arranged in a spherical-toroidal geometry, the Compton scattering matter has an opening angle ~66 degrees and is seen at a grazing angle through its upper rim (inclination angle ~70 degrees). We report a possible occultation event during the 2014 campaign. If the torus is constituted by a system of clouds sharing the same column density, this event allows us to constrain their number (17$\pm$5) and individual column density, [~(4.9$\pm$1.5)$\times$10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$]. The comparison of IR and X-ray spectroscopic results with state-of-the art "torus" models suggests that at least two thirds of the X-ray obscuring gas volume might be located within the dust sublimation radius. We report also the discovery of an ionized absorber, characterised by variable resonant absorption lines due to He- and H-like iron. We present $NuSTAR$ X-ray observations of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 7674. The source shows a flat X-ray spectrum, suggesting that it is obscured by Compton-thick gas columns. Based upon long-term flux dimming, previous work suggested the alternate possibility that the source is a recently switched-off AGN with the observed X-rays being the lagged echo from the torus. Our high-quality data show the source to be reflection-dominated in hard X-rays, but with a relatively weak neutral Fe K$\alpha$ emission line (equivalent width [EW] of $\approx$ 0.4 keV) and a strong Fe XXVI ionised line (EW $\approx$ 0.2 keV). We construct an updated long-term X-ray light curve of NGC 7674 and find that the observed 2-10 keV flux has remained constant for the past $\approx$ 20 years, following a high flux state probed by $Ginga$. Light travel time arguments constrain the minimum radius of the reflector to be $\sim$ 3.2 pc under the switched-off AGN scenario, $\approx$ 30 times larger than the expected dust sublimation radius, rendering this possibility unlikely. A patchy Compton-thick AGN (CTAGN) solution is plausible, requiring a minimum line-of-sight column density ($N_{\rm H}$) of 3 $\times$ 10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ at present, and yields an intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosity of (3-5) $\times$ 10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Realistic uncertainties span the range of $\approx$ (1-13) $\times$ 10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The source has one of the weakest fluorescence lines amongst {\em bona fide} CTAGN, and is potentially a local analogue of bolometrically luminous systems showing complex neutral and ionised Fe emission. We present results from spectral fitting of the very high state of GX~339-4 with NuSTAR and Swift. We use relativistic reflection modelling to measure the spin of the black hole and inclination of the inner disk, and find a spin of $a=0.95^{+0.02}_{-0.08}$ and inclination of $30${\deg}$\pm1$ (statistical errors). These values agree well with previous results from reflection modelling. With the exceptional sensitivity of NuSTAR at the high-energy side of the disk spectrum, we are able to constrain multiple physical parameters simultaneously using continuum fitting. By using the constraints from reflection as input for the continuum fitting method, we invert the conventional fitting procedure to estimate the mass and distance of GX~339-4 using just the X-ray spectrum, finding a mass of $9.0^{+1.6}_{-1.2}M_\odot$ and distance of $8.4\pm0.9$ kpc (statistical errors)., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters
