The Internet is transforming our society, necessitating a quantitative understanding of Internet traffic. Our team collects and curates the largest publicly available Internet traffic data sets. An analysis of 50 billion packets using 10,000 processors in the MIT SuperCloud reveals a new phenomenon: the importance of otherwise unseen leaf nodes and isolated links in Internet traffic. Our analysis further shows that a two-parameter modified Zipf-Mandelbrot distribution accurately describes a wide variety of source/destination statistics on moving sample windows ranging from 100{,}000 to 100{,}000{,}000 packets over collections that span years and continents. The measured model parameters distinguish different network streams, and the model leaf parameter strongly correlates with the fraction of the traffic in different underlying network topologies., Comment: 53 pages, 27 figures, 8 tables, 121 references. Adversarial Internet robots (botnets) represent a growing threat to the safe use and stability of the Internet. Botnets can play a role in launching adversary reconnaissance (scanning and phishing), influence operations (upvoting), and financing operations (ransomware, market manipulation, denial of service, spamming, and ad click fraud) while obfuscating tailored tactical operations. Reducing the presence of botnets on the Internet, with the aspirational target of zero, is a powerful vision for galvanizing policy action. Setting a global goal, encouraging international cooperation, creating incentives for improving networks, and supporting entities for botnet takedowns are among several policies that could advance this goal. These policies raise significant questions regarding proper authorities/access that cannot be answered in the abstract. Systems analysis has been widely used in other domains to achieve sufficient detail to enable these questions to be dealt with in concrete terms. Defeating botnets using an observe-pursue-counter architecture is analyzed, the technical feasibility is affirmed, and the authorities/access questions are significantly narrowed. Utilizing a novel hypersparse neural network analysis of "video" streams of this traffic using 10,000 processors in the MIT SuperCloud reveals a new phenomena: the importance of otherwise unseen leaf nodes and isolated links in Internet traffic. Our neural network approach further shows that a two-parameter modified Zipf-Mandelbrot distribution accurately describes a wide variety of source/destination statistics on moving sample windows ranging from 100,000 to 100,000,000 packets over collections that span years and continents. The inferred model parameters distinguish different network streams and the model leaf parameter strongly correlates with the fraction of the traffic in different underlying network topologies. In the mid-90's, it was shown that the statistics of aggregated time series from Internet traffic departed from those of traditional short range dependent models, and were instead characterized by asymptotic self-similarity. Following this seminal contribution, over the years, many studies have investigated the existence and form of scaling in Internet traffic. This contribution aims first at presenting a methodology, combining multiscale analysis (wavelet and wavelet leaders) and random projections (or sketches), permitting a precise, efficient and robust characterization of scaling which is capable of seeing through non-stationary anomalies. Second, we apply the methodology to a data set spanning an unusually long period: 14 years, from the MAWI traffic archive, thereby allowing an in-depth longitudinal analysis of the form, nature and evolutions of scaling in Internet traffic, as well as network mechanisms producing them. We also study a separate 3-day long trace to obtain complementary insight into intra-day behavior. We find that a biscaling (two ranges of independent scaling phenomena) regime is systematically observed: long-range dependence over the large scales, and multifractal-like scaling over the fine scales. We quantify the actual scaling ranges precisely, verify to high accuracy the expected relationship between the long range dependent parameter and the heavy tail parameter of the flow size distribution, and relate fine scale multifractal scaling to typical IP packet inter-arrival and to round-trip time distributions.

International audience, In this paper, we present our P2P-TV measurement experiment performed in France and in Japan. By using multiple measurement points in different locations of the world, we are able to get a global view of the measured P2P networks and we can infer their main properties. More precisely, we focus on the location of peers and the effect of the P2P-TV traffic on the networks. Our results shows that hundred of Autonomous Systems are involved in the exchange of traffic between peers and it points out the lack of locality-aware mechanisms for these P2P-TV systems. We also investigate the geographic location of users. It testifies the wide spread of these applications in Asia and highlights the worldwide usage of these applications.
