Cross-lingual adaptation has proven effective in spoken language understanding (SLU) systems with limited resources. Existing methods are frequently unsatisfactory for intent detection and slot filling, particularly for distant languages that differ significantly from the source language in scripts, morphology, and syntax. Latent Dialogue Action (LaDA) layer is proposed to optimize decoding strategy in order to address the aforementioned issues. The model consists of an additional layer of latent dialogue action. It enables our model to improve a system's capability of handling conversations with complex multilingual intent and slot values of distant languages. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first exhaustive investigation of the use of latent variables for optimizing cross-lingual SLU policy during the decode stage. LaDA obtains state-of-the-art results on public datasets for both zero-shot and few-shot adaptation.

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the underlying role of interferon-regulatory factor 2 (IRF2)-inositol polyphosphate-4-phosphatase, type-II (INPP4B) axis in the regulation of autophagy in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells. Methods: Quantitative real time PCR (QRT-PCR) and western blot were performed to determine the expression levels of IRF2, INPP4B and autophagy-related markers in AML cell lines. Autophagy was assessed by elevated Beclin-1 expression, the conversion of light chain 3 (LC3)-I to LC3-II, downregulated p62 expression and green fluorescent protein (GFP)-LC3 puncta formation. The colony formation and apoptosis assays were performed to determine the effects of IRF2 and INPP4B on the growth of AML cells. Results: IRF2 and INPP4B were highly expressed in AML cell lines, and were positively correlated with autophagy-related proteins. Overexpression of IRF2 or INPP4B stimulated autophagy of AML cells, whereas inhibition of IRF2 or INPP4B resulted in the attenuation of autophagy. More importantly, IRF2 or INPP4B overexpression reversed autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine (3-MA)-induced proliferation-inhibitory and pro-apoptotic effects, while IRF2 or INPP4B silencing overturned the proliferation-promoting and anti-apoptotic effects of autophagy activator rapamycin. Conclusion: IRF2-INPP4B signaling axis attenuated apoptosis through induction of autophagy in AML cells.

Furthermore, the potential of Li/Li+ is 0.3 V lower than that of Na/Na+, which makes it more effective to limit the electrolyte degradation on the outer surface of the electrode.[1] Nevertheless, one major obstacle for the commercial application of SIBs is the larger ionic radius of Na+ (0.98 Å) which is 0.29 Å larger than that of Li+, resulting in easier structural degradation for the Na+ host materials.[2,3] As anode materials for SIBs, the traditional carbon-based materials like hard carbon[4] and porous carbon,[5,6] tin (Sn),[7] and antimony (Sb)[8] show poor cycle performance due to their large volume expansion caused by Na+ insertion.

Oligoamide 1, consisting of two H-bonding units linked by a trimethylene linker, was previously found to form a very stable, folded dimer. In this work, replacing the side chains and end groups of 1 led to derivatives that show the surprising impact of end groups on the folding and dimer-chain equilibria of the resultant molecules.

Chinese Americans underutilize colorectal cancer screening. This study evaluated a physician-based intervention guided by social cognitive theory (SCT) to inform future research involving minority physicians and patients. Twenty-five Chinese-speaking primary care physicians were randomized into intervention or usual care arms. The intervention included two 45-minute in-office training sessions paired with a dual-language communication guide detailing strategies in addressing Chinese patients' screening barriers. Physicians' feedback on the intervention, their performance data during training, and pre-post intervention survey data were collected and analyzed. Most physicians (~85%) liked the intervention materials but ~84% spent less than 20 minutes reading the guide and only 46% found the length of time for in-office training acceptable. Despite this, the intervention increased physicians' perceived communication self-efficacy with patients (p<.01). This study demonstrated the feasibility of enrolling and intervening with minority physicians. Time constraints in primary care practice should be considered in the design and implementation of interventions.

Currently 5% of the American population is of Asian descent, and Asian families are among the fastest growing groups of immigrant families in the United States. However, the family science literature has few studies of the parenting practices of Asian American and Asian immigrant mothers, including factors that may contribute to differences in the way these parents are raising their children. To address this gap, the current study used an ecological/risk and resiliency framework to examine factors that may predict the parenting involvement, parenting practices, and parenting aggravation of mothers from Asian heritage. Specifically, this study examined the role of three potential protective factors--maternal education, acculturation, and social support--and one potential risk factor, maternal depressive symptoms, in predicting mothers' expectations for their children's academic achievement, involvement in children's home and school activities, provision of cognitive stimulation and emotional support, use of harsh discipline, and aggravation in the parenting role. This study employed secondary data analysis using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Studies Kindergarten Class of 1998-1999, Third Grade Database. The sample included 462 mothers of Asian descent who were born in the United States or foreign countries, and who had a third grade child. Mothers were interviewed by telephone or in person. Multiple regression analyses examined the role of maternal depression, education, acculturation, and social support in predicting the seven measures of parenting. Findings revealed that more depressive symptoms were predictive of greater parenting aggravation and lower emotional support for the child. Higher maternal education was linked to higher academic expectations and greater cognitive stimulation of the child, as well greater family involvement in school activities. The objective of this study is to develop a practical mathematical model to determine optimal operating rules for the reservoir system of the West Branch Penobscot River in the State of Maine of the US. This system is composed of five major lakes and it has three objectives. The hydrological data are not available in winter in the upstream four lakes due to freeze and the length of flow data is less than 25 years. Dynamic programming (DP) has been used extensively for solving reservoir operation problems. One major drawback of DP for multiple reservoir operation is the "curse of dimensionality". Many variations of the original DP have been proposed to ease this problem, for example, incremental DP, discrete differential DP, differential DP, gradient DP, and spline DP. Instead of a DP approach, this study proposes using a nonlinear programming (NLP) approach to solve the multi-reservoir system. NLP has been developed extensively in the field of operations research but not yet widely used in reservoir operations. A distinct advantage of using an NLP model is that it can avoid the dimensionality problem because it solves directly the problem without discretizing the decision variables. To use the NLP approach, a real time operation model is specified at first. Then, a multivariate first-order autoregressive model is used to generate a large number of future inflow sequences. The MINOS software package is then used to optimize the problem with each inflow sequence. MINOS can be implemented seemly in the simulation process and can solve the problems without starting values of variables. The number of runs in a simulation is determined by a statistical model, which shows that 500 runs are sufficient. Finally, the expected values and standard deviations of decision variables are tabulated and the distributions of decision variables are plotted.
