Resumen Introducción: El seno frontal es una estructura compleja y desafiante en términos quirúrgicos, siendo descritas numerosas técnicas para su abordaje. Dentro de ellas se destaca el abordaje endoscópico extendido de seno frontal: Draf IIB y Draf III, como una importante alternativa para resolución de patología refractaria de seno frontal. Objetivo: Describir las características de pacientes sometidos a abordaje endoscópico extendido de seno frontal en Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile (HCUCH). Material y Método: Estudio retrospectivo, descriptivo. Se incluyeron a pacientes sometidos a abordaje endoscópico extendido de seno frontal entre los años 2013 y 2021. Se analizaron variables clínicas, intraoperatorias y de seguimiento. Resultados: Se registraron 118 pacientes, de los cuales 64 cumplieron criterios de inclusión al estudio, con una edad promedio de 48 años. La patología más frecuente fue la rinosinusitis crónica poliposa (42%) seguido del mucocele (20%). Del total de pacientes, el 68% fue sometido a cirugía Draf IIB y el resto a Draf III. Todos los pacientes fueron estudiados con endoscopía e imágenes, y seguidos con parámetros clínicos y endoscópicos. El porcentaje de estenosis postoperatoria se estimó en 10%. Conclusión: El abordaje endoscópico nasal extendido figura como una alternativa útil para manejo de patología de seno frontal refractario a tratamiento. En nuestra experiencia las indicaciones, tipos de cirugía y tasa de complicaciones son concordantes con la literatura internacional.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are key actors in modulating the progression of many solid tumors, such as breast cancer (BC). Herein, we identify an integrin α11/PDGFRβ–positive CAF subset displaying tumor-promoting features in BC. In the preclinical MMTV-PyMT mouse model, integrin α11 deficiency led to a drastic reduction of tumor progression and metastasis. A clear association between integrin α11 and PDGFRβ was found at both transcriptional and histological levels in BC specimens. High stromal integrin α11/PDGFRβ expression was associated with high grades and poorer clinical outcome in human BC patients. Functional assays using 5 CAF subpopulations (1 murine, 4 human) revealed that integrin α11 promotes CAF invasion and CAF-induced tumor cell invasion upon PDGF-BB stimulation. Mechanistically, the proinvasive activity of integrin α11 relies on its ability to interact with PDGFRβ in a ligand-dependent manner and to promote its downstream JNK activation, leading to the production of tenascin C, a proinvasive matricellular protein. Pharmacological inhibition of PDGFRβ and JNK impaired tumor cell invasion induced by integrin α11+ CAFs. Collectively, our study uncovers an integrin α11+ subset of protumoral CAFs that exploits the PDGFRβ/JNK signaling axis to promote tumor invasiveness in BC.

The eastern slope of Mt. Etna is characterised by shallow seismicity originating from normal-oblique faulting, Timpe Fault System, related to WNW-ESE regional extension. Recent research has demonstrated that in the fault population of Mt. Etna's eastern flank the minimum earthquake magnitude that will have a ground rupture effect is ca. 2.5. This system is characterised by high frequency seismic activity, due to thinned seismogenic crustal layer. This characteristic, together with the high density of the fault segments, does not always for identification of the segments responsible for the earthquake. The earthquakes, affecting the medium-lower eastern flank, have been historically reconstructed by macroseismic analysis and reported in a macroseismic database, and in recent decades by instrumental seismic registration, which provide the seismological parameters capable of evaluating focal mechanism, hypocentre and relative algorithms related to geometric parameters which control the growth of fault segments. In this paper, we present a methodology to evaluate the age of the rapid exhumation of the free-face fault plane of the NNW-SSE oriented normal fault segment named S. Tecla (Timpe Fault System). It consists of the measurement of the thalli species (Lichenometry method) in order to evaluate the parameters which characterise their growth. The seismic history of the S. Tecla Fault indicates eight certain events from 1865 to 2005 with 3.4 ÷ 4.7 Magnitude (De Guidi et al., 2012 and reference therein). We found evidence of two different recent rapid vertical deformation events at the base of the S. Tecla fault escarpment, the oldest 20 m long and 0.25 m in height, and the youngest with a 0.02 m high nude surface exposed. We have observed that there are thalli of Xanthoparmelia conspersa (Ehrh. Ex Ach.) Hale, colonizing part of the nude surface on the escarpment. The results highlight that the oldest thalli was dated at 43.7 years old, showing that rapid vertical defor

Background: Airway resistance (RAW) and specific airway conductance (sGAW) are measures that reflect the patency of airways. Little is known of the variability of these measures between different lung diseases. This study investigated the contribution of RAW and sGAW to a diagnosis of obstructive airways disease and their role in differentiating asthma from COPD. Method(s): 976 subjects admitted for the first time to a pulmonary practice in Belgium were included. Clinical diagnoses were based on complete pulmonary function tests and supported by investigations of physicians' discretion. 651 subjects had a final diagnosis of obstructive diseases, 168 had another respiratory disease and 157 subjects had no respiratory disease (healthy controls). Result(s): RAW and sGAW were significantly different (p < 0.0001) between obstructive and other groups. Abnormal RAW and sGAW were found in 39 % and 18 % of the population, respectively, in which 81 % and 90 % had diagnosed airway obstruction. Multiple regression revealed sGAW to be a significant and independent predictor of an obstructive disorder. To differentiate asthma from COPD, RAW was found to be more relevant and statistically significant. In asthma patients with normal FEV1/FVC ratio, both RAW and sGAW were more specific than sensitive diagnostic tests in differentiating asthma from healthy subjects.
